considering MetoKote finishes about 355 million parts per year. But at a 99.6 first-pass quality yield based on the bench-marking survey, the staff is getting about as close to perfection

as possible.The company is nearing its half-century mark, founded in

1969 by the Blankemeyer brothers, who started MetoKote in a small garage in Mt. Cory, Ohio, by building a powder booth out of used components.

For the last several years, Platinum Equity owned MetoKote before its recent sale to PPG, a major supplier in the coatings industry.

“MetoKote is a leader in coatings services,” says Viktor Sekmakas, PPG executive vice president. “Its size, breadth of capabilities and geographic reach complement PPG’s technology and regional customer base. With this acquisition, we will be able to deliver process efficiency and streamline coatings opera-tions for our customers.”

The company also provides additional value-added services, such as aftermarket sheet metal labeling, packaging, logistics, light assembly services, data collection and analysis, masking development and use, and direct shipment of coated parts to the final point of assembly.

Another big reason for MetoKote’s success is its quality and testing operations. The company recently relocated its perfor-mance test laboratory to a larger space within its Lima facility. It offers customers the services of an in-house American Association for Laboratory Accreditation certified laboratory.

The laboratory is staffed by full-time employees and services such as salt spray testing, cyclical corrosion testing, humidity testing, QUV accelerated weathering, hardness tests, solvent rubs and others. MetoKote also performs biweekly panel corro-sion tests for its 78 process lines located around the world.

“Moving to a larger space allows us to continue accommo-dating customer needs in a timely manner,” Oravitz says. “It saves our customers time and money by eliminating the need to utilize outside laboratory services, and our A2LA accreditation offers customers confidencein the accuracy of our testing methods.”

Jay Burkard likes to keep things simple, which is why he promotes his coating company to prospective customers as their “one-stop coating shop.”

The company president markets Burkard Industries as being able to provide manufacturers everything from prototype to production, focusing on meeting their finishing requirements with the advantages of competitive pricing, superior quality and timely delivery.

“We assure customers they will get the highest quality level by using the latest application techniques and equipment,” says Burkard, whose shop is being recognized for its business prac-tices in the Products Finishing Top Shop Benchmarking Survey.

Burkard Industries’ services include electrocoat, powder coat, CARC military coatings, Alodine conversion coating, immersion zinc phosphate, iron phosphate, high-heat-resis-tant paint, custom masking and assembly.

Those capabilities are applied across a wide spectrum of markets, including military, automotive, industrial, commercial and entertainment, and Burkard Industries has become known as a nationally-recognized leader in cleaning, pretreatment and coating processes for decorative and protective coatings.

The company was founded in 1934 by Burkard’s great-grandfather, John A. Burkard, who started it

With more than 42 million parts finished each year, Erik Ender doesn’t rely on his instincts to tell him how well his finishing business is operating.

The owner of Freedom Finishing in Benton Harbor, Michigan, prefers to use statistical process controls to let him know how efficient his powder coating and electrocoating lines are humming.

“Our computerized controls monitor every aspect of the process at all times,” says Ender, who started his company in 1988. “The entire plant is designed for smooth product flow.”

Freedom Finishing is recognized in the Top Shops program for its exceptional work in the Finishing Practices and Performance category.

Continuous improvement is a big reason for the success of

Freedom Finishing, and Ender says it begins at the highest levels of his management team and focuses

on teamwork and customer satisfaction. For years, the company has run a fully-operational ISO quality

assurance program that includes ongoing employee participation and training to ensure quality aware-ness of each of its customer’s specification.

Freedom Finishing is also a stickler for getting coated parts back to customers in a timely—and

promised—manner.“We understand and recognize the importance of

on-time delivery to our customers, so we incorporate it as a standard business practice,” Ender says. “Most deliveries are made with our own trucks, so we elimi-

nate any delays that may occur due to a third-party problem. Our plant is about a mile from Interstate 94, which allows us easy access to most delivery routes.”

According to Freedom Finishing’s Top Shop data, the shop had a 99.6 percent on-time delivery rate to its

customers. It’s order lead time is at two days, a quick turn-around in a business where all customers want their parts fast.

“In most cases, that means yesterday,” he quips.Ender says his team takes pride in getting to know their

customers well, and therefore become familiar with their products and the way they do business.

“The result is better communication and consistent service,” he says. “Most of our customer’s orders are completed within 1-5 days of receiving product, depending on the availability of the materials required to process the order.”

Ender and his wife, Gloria Ender, started Freedom Finishing in 1988 by just offering powder coating, and in 2001 expanded its capabilities to electrocoating, mainly to diversify their coating requirements to customer’s needs. Gloria is the president of the company, and they now have more than 60,000 square feet of production space in Benton Harbor, where the SPC systems have led to 0.4 percent scrap and rework rates while operating two shifts for roughly 16 hours per day.

Erik Ender’s background was in tool and die and engineering, which has helped in make their tooling more efficient, as well as increasing productivity.

Freedom Finishing gets most of its work from the auto-motive, military, appliance, recreation, furniture and heavy truck industries. The company also offers custom racking, masking, packaging and sub-assembly.

“We pay attention to detail for all of our customers,” Enders says. “Their satisfaction is essential to our continued growth.”

Take Part in the Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey

The annual Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey was launched in 2015 to aid finishing shops in comparing their key operating metrics with others in the industry. The survey was designed so that finishing busi-nesses could identify their optimal shop floor practices, as well as help them improve their operational and business approaches that define what would be considered a “world-class” finishing operation.

The results from the several hundred shops that took part in the survey this spring was an incredible compilation of statistics, best practices and operational strategies that clearly defined what would be considered a “Top Shop” and what would be considered the “rest of the field.”

Each shop taking the survey receives a Top Shop Executive Summary with data and statistics to formulate a plan for improvement finishing technology, performance and practices, business strategy and human resources.

When Georgia Powder Coating opened its doors in 1999, it had just four employees working out of the back of a poultry processing warehouse.

Dallas Cooley and Stanley Phillips were two of those employees, hanging parts and sweating in the sweltering heat of Gainesville, Georgia, and driving the forklift to load finished goods.

Today, the powder coating system that GPC runs in an expansive 30,000-square-foot facility is more on the advanced side. Cooley and Phillips are no longer hanging parts, but are equity owners. Cooley is vice president of sales

and Phillips is vice president of production, and they are growing the business year over year.

“We’ve grown into one of the most experi-enced and respected metal powder coat finishing

operations on the East Coast,” Cooley says. GPC now has more than 45 employees, and the shop is being recognized for its finishing technology in the Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey.

“Our employees and management team have worked very hard to be the best in the industry, and to provide our customers with quality service,” says Counte Cooley, Dallas’ father and president of GPC. “It never ceases to amaze me the ingenuity,

professionalism and enthusiasm each employee has put forth to make this the company it is today—and the company it will be in the future.”

Part of that success is traced to Phillips leading the effort to increase company sales by investing in

newer equipment and technology. The shop has a five-stage zirconium wash, and both manual and automatic electrostatic spray, along with two gas-fired convection ovens and a conveyor that is over 650 feet long, as well as a batch oven that is 45 by 12 by 12 feet, plus a media blasting booth the same size.

“Our automatic gun conveyor line is for large quantity coating production, in addition to a batch operation for coating individual orders,” Dallas says. “Our proprietary processes and systems are designed to ensure that parts are done right, on time, every time, making our custom-er’s life a little easier.”

In 2015, GPC invested heavily in a new washer, racking and testing equipment to upgrade efficiencies and coating quality. It also implemented lean manufacturing practices throughout the facility. The company offers a guaranteed three-day on-time delivery for in-stock colors and finishes, and a 24-hour expedite service.

GPC checks in at 99 percent on-time delivery rate, and at 99.7 percent on first-pass quality yield. The shop runs about 20 hours per day.

Cooley said one of his company’s proudest moments came recently when GPC was asked to powder coat several pieces that were to be used at One World Trade Center in New York City. The building stands 1,776 feet tall, and GPC’s task was to coat metal guards in the atrium of the building.

“It’s an honor,” Cooley says. “Everyone that is aware of 9/11 is keenly aware of the significance of the building and

Keystone Koating's president Rick Gehman says his company’s best work is kept hidden inside the walls of its Pennsylvania facilities in Lititz and Mifflintown.

Gehman says it’s his employees and management team that have helped earn the coater a Products Finishing Top Shops award for the past two years. And Keystone’s human resources and training practices could mean it will be recognized for years to come.

“If our team didn’t care, it would reveal itself later in rusting, coating delamination and more,” says Gehman. “We’re grateful to have a team that brings years of experience to preparing and finishing metal. We trust them.”

Keystone Koating employees often speak about how they feel valued by management and the company owners. The company promotes teamwork and a sense of quality into its human resource training.

“Because I’m friends with everybody here, even outside of work, it makes me care more about my job,” says Joe Slautterback, who has worked at the Mifflintown plant for almost 10 years.

Todd Carvell says he enjoys what he’s doing at Keystone, and the people he works with.

“Every day there’s a new challenge to work with, and

I’m treated well by my employees,” he says. “I can tell they’re interested in my growth, and there’s

room to grow.”Keystone Koating was founded in 1986 by

Nelson Zimmerman. He realized that two compa-nies he was associated with—Zimmerman Cattle

Control and CropCare—needed an improved coating process. Zimmerman wanted a coating system that provided superior corrosion protection and durability

that could be applied in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

“We probably spent more than a year in research trying to settle on the best option for improvement,” Zimmerman says. “The biggest challenge getting

started was learning all the unique nuances associated with the process.” he says.Keystone Koating has two automated coating lines and

a pair of batch systems at its Lititz plant, and an automated line and a batch system at its Mifflintown location. The company serves several industries, including industrial, automotive, medical, retail, architecture and agriculture.

Jason Hockenberry, who has spent 10 years at the Mifflintown facility, says the Keystone Koating management team communicates well with all employees.

“There’s an even playing field,” he says. “It’s like having family away from home. I know I’m going to feel good about going to work. Being named a Top Shop means we’re thriving. It has to be related. It says something about our work culture.”
