Does Leadership matter in organisation? Yes

A range of studies* (using various methodologies) found:

• Consistent relationship between “who is in charge” and how the organisation performs

• Changes in leadership lead to changes in performance

• Statistical analysis suggests that leadership is responsible for 15 – 45% of a firm’s performance

* See textbook page 8

Page 21: Topic 1

Does Leadership matter in organisation? No

Three major arguments against the importance of leadership :

1. Substitutes exist for leadership

2. Leaders can be irrelevant; people lead themselves and outside influences can overwhelm

3. Organisational systems are far too complex to attribute success to leadership
