Essential Questions

Definitions Learning outcomes

A. What are the impact of climate change to humans?

B. How do countries prepare for the impact brought about by climate change?

(LDQ - PEEL)

- Climate change has impacted the natural environment and human lives

- Strategies can be implemented to reduce human induced climate change and its impact.

- Variable weather and climate continues to provide a challenge to humans due to the negative impact it can bring to the natural environment and human lives.

- Explain the impact of climate change to the environment and human lives.

- Describe how countries/govt have responded to climate change issues

6A. What are the impact of climate change to humans?

1. Sea level rise2. Extreme weather events3. Diseases spread4. Growing season affected

Page 4: Topic 6

1. Sea level rise

•Steady increase in sea level height

•Higher temperatures cause ▫Melting of glaciers (ice)

▫Sea and oceans to expand

•Threatens low-lying islands and coasts eg Maldives

Page 5: Topic 6

2. Extreme weather events•Refers to severe and rare weather phenomenon = results in economic losses and loss of lives

•Higher frequency due to higher land and sea surface temperatures▫Results in greater

amount of water vapor and heat

•Eg: Heat waves, floods, droughts, cyclones

Page 6: Topic 6

3. Diseases spreading • Increased temperatures

and rainfall helps insects to thrive

•May spread infectious insect-borne disease (transmit to humans/animals)

•Eg Mosquites breed easier with heavy rainfall (Spread of malaria and dengue)

•Diseases also spreads to new places because climate of a place changes

Page 7: Topic 6

4. Growing season affected• Higher temperatures may result in longer or shorter growing season for crops

•GOOD: Blackberries (can grow in UK now as temperature increased)

•BAD: Applies and Cherries (Production reduced in Yunnan as they need cool weather conditions)

6B. How do countries prepare for the impact brought about by climate change?

1.International responses: Kyoto Protocol and Copenhagen Conference

2.National responses: Individual countries eg Singapore and India (PEEL)

Page 9: Topic 6

International level – United National effortsDefinition

Successes Limitations

Kyoto Protocol

- Reduced green-house gas emission

- Many countries met or exceed target to reduce greenhouse gas

- Countries carried out emission reduction projects

- Some countries didn’t achieve targets

- Some countries didn’t sign treaty

Copenhagen Conference

- Improve measures for Kyoto Protocol

- Cap increases in global mean maximum temperature within 2 degrees celsius

- Funds provided to reduce greenhouse gas emission

- Targets not met by many countries

6B. How do countries prepare for the impact brought about by climate change?

2.National responses: Individual countries eg Singapore and India (PEEL)

Format: 6 marks (usually last question)

Sample questions1) With reference to examples,

assess the effectiveness of how Singapore has reduced the greenhouse gas emissions.

2) Evaluate the extent that India should take responsibilities to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.Text page 115

With reference to example, assess the effectiveness of how locals protect tourist areas.

L3/6 : L3/5 with well elaborated CONCLUSION

In conclusion, locals are largely effective in protection of the tourist areas. However they will need to improve on their labour skills in conservation and preservation of the environment so that they are capable to manage the tourism impacts successfully.

Groups (P)

Strengths (E)

Examples (E) Limitations (L)

Locals – A local community is a group of people living in the same territory.

Community based tourism makes locals a priority in employment and business opportunities. They also benefit economically from tourism.

In Java (Indonesia), the Candirejo village had new jobs and businesses due to tourism. There were 63 new jobs, 5 new business as well as 12.5 % increase in income from 2001 to 2003.

The locals may not have enough skilled labour such as managers and consultants that can successfully help to manage the impact of tourism. Therefore, they may need to seek help of NGOs to provide training.

Level 1: 0 – 2 marks

•Simple description of strengths and limitations

•One sided answer•No example given•L1/1 : ONE strength or ONE limitation of ONE group

•L1/2 : ONE strength or ONE limitation of TWO groups

Page 16: Topic 6

Level 2: 3 – 4 marks

•Detailed description of strengths and limitations

•Two sided answer•Examples are given•L2/4 : ONE strength & ONE limitation of TWO groups with TWO examples
