TESOL In today’s mobile, global world, English has emerged as the means
through which people connect, converse, and transact. Demand for English language learning has never been greater. Unfortunately, the quality of English language teaching for speakers of other languages varies widely, and standards are inconsistent. Fluency in English alone does not make a great teacher. Teaching English is a science and an art, requiring skill, training, and expertise.
For nearly 50 years, TESOL International Association has been bringingtogether educators, researchers, administrators, and students to advancethe profession of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Withmore than 12,000 members representing 156 countries, and more than100 worldwide affiliates, TESOL offers everyone involved in English languageteaching and learning an opportunity to be part of a dynamic community, where professionals connect with and inspire each other to achievethe highest standards of excellence.

Doctoral Student Poster: Oral Language Development:
Strategies & ImplicationsPresenter: Allison Briceño, U of San Francisco
• Problem: English language proficiency is the #1 predictor of EL’s success, but studies indicate very limited time for student talk in classrooms.
• Questions: – How do teachers use the concept of transfer between
English and Spanish to facilitate student learning?– How do teachers use the concept of reciprocity
among the domains of reading, writing, speaking, and listening to facilitate student learning?
13
• Purpose: To explore how teachers deliver High-quality academic language instruction to ELs in both Spanish and English, including reading, writing, listening and speaking in a Dual Immersion (DI) program.
• Participants: 4 successful dual immersion teachers • Results:
– Teachers mistrusted administrators’ ability to make decisions, and made decisions on what they believed was best for students. Teachers felt that they were advocating for L1 maintenance and L2 proficiency.
– Teachers were hesitant to use transfer (including cognates and students’ L1) because of the language separation requirement.
• Absent from Instruction: 1) Transfer from L1 L2; 2) reciprocity in Rdg/Wrtg/Listng/Spkg ; 3)Critical thnkg
