Hello to all members and welcome to another edition of the club’s newsletter, Topspin. This edition is published in the week before what the committee is expecting to be a highlight of the club’s social calendar: the club revue.

Floreat was renowned for the revues it used to have in years gone by, and I remember the first one I participated in when I was only a junior member, in my early teens. Members may not remember my rousing rendition of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” (which I performed with Simon Edmunds) because I think Simon and I were totally overshadowed by the Full Monty – which featured several of the club’s, well, older males.

I asked Denise and her social committee to consider bringing the revue back again, and I’m very excited that she has done so. It is my hope that our ‘modern revue’ will recreate some of the magic, camaraderie and laughter of the club’s earlier events. Please make sure you see any of the club’s committee members to get a ticket. I’m confident, also, that my singing has improved since the last time.

Separately, as we come towards the end of the financial year, the club will soon be sending out membership renewals. Please ensure these are paid by the end of September; the club’s rules state that those who have not paid by then are deemed to be non-financial members.

Also, I would like to foreshadow that John, our Club Captain, will soon be publishing a guide to social tennis at Floreat. This useful document will act as a behaviour and etiquette guide for social players and will cover how social tennis is arranged, and how we all have a role in making it enjoyable and successful for everyone’s benefit.

I hope to see you all at the Club Revue.

Tennis Activities Report

We are super excited to be offering new and improved classes for adults and children. Andy has been doing some overtime at the club. The Rusty and Rally Racquets and the Tennis Workout Classes are on nearly every day and is building to be one of the best programs in Perth. The best thing is they’re perfect for all levels of player including the social tennis player wanting that bit more knowledge and/or tennis fitness.

If you’re lucky to get on the list, Andy and Justin are organising a Rottnest Island Tennis Camp. If you miss out on this one don’t worry...I’m sure there will be more planned in the near future. Also don’t miss out on Andy’s Friday afternoon match play from 6:00-7:30pm. All members and non-members are welcome and includes a free sausage sizzle each week AND the bar will be open.

To view the current coaching program, please go to www.millmantennis.com.au and click on the Term 3 PDF in the top corner.

The last few months have given us a lot of perfect tennis weather. The only problem is that without wind or rain there is nothing to blame when you miss a shot. This nice weather has brought a lot more people to social tennis and brought along several new members. To all new members, it is great to have you join us and we hope you enjoy your tennis and social activities and become long term club members.

The captain’s versus president’s day held in May was a perfect day for tennis and enjoyed by lots of members. This is an old tradition in the club that we have resurrected. Don’t bother to look in the president’s report for the results!

Special Events

In April the senior club played against a visiting team from the Keppel Club from Singapore. The visitors also joined in Saturday social tennis the following day and stayed for an enjoyable barbeque. The club is building a relationship with Singapore clubs with some members planning a visit to Singapore in the not too distant future. Eight club members also visited three Singapore clubs in 2015. This is helped by the club having several members with strong connections to Singapore, particularly Anthony Quahe.

Coming Over 35s TournamentOnce again the club is planning its big tennis event, the Sports Surfaces Over 35 doubles tournament, on October 7 and 8. So if you are over 35, start getting your partners lined up.

Club ChampionshipsThe club championships were held in the weeks before Easter culminating in a successful finals day for both seniors and juniors on April 8. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Congratulations to all the winners, it was good to see some new names among the winners.

You might notice the mixed singles events. Don’t let it be said that we don’t try anything new. These went down well, so we might have another try next year.

Don’t forget Junior Pennant Training is on Friday at 6:00-7:30 with Andy. Adults are welcome. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Brad’s Tennis TipI have a fun exercise to improve your game. You need two people of similar standard to rally cross court for 2 minutes each side, but the ball is only allowed to land in the tram lines! Although the area is already quite small (and you probably don’t think you can hit it in at all) choose your spot before hitting. You can hit it deep close to the baseline or a sharp angle closer to the net. Once you’ve done both sides, rallying in the normal court will seem a lot easier...give it a try.

Grading Day on April 18th

Social Report Denise Cramer

Since the last Social Report in March we have celebrated the Club Championship winners with drinks, nibbles and a sausage sizzle, entertained the Keppel club from Singapore with afternoon tea and an Aussie Barbie, said goodbye to Matt Carle, had paella and champagne (and played) at City Beach Tennis Club at the Judi Chapman Cup and rehearsed for next week’s Club Revue! As you can see there is always something happening at Floreat both on and off the court! Luckily the weather has been glorious for tennis players not farmers!

I am looking forward to seeing you all at next Saturday’s Club Revue for some amazing wood-fired pizza and jaw-dropping entertainment! It is not too late to purchase your $25 ticket (includes dinner and show) or even be part of the fun on stage? Just let me know so I can add you to the program!!

Denise

Ed: My apologies that some of the information in this edition of Topspin is out of date. A full report of the Club Revue will appear in the September edition.

Judi Chapman Cup Sunday 12th June proved to be perfect for playing tennis, eating paella and raising $1,700

for brain cancer research whilst remembering friend and tennis-lover, Judi Chapman.

Special thanks to City Beach for hosting the event: Wendy Roach for slaving over a hot paella pan to feed 80 people at the end of play, along with organisers Penny Askin, Donna

Blackwell, Sue Clayton, Ryan Chapman and Ryan Anderson.

Visitors from Floreat Park Tennis Club once again joined with City Beach Tennis Club members and friends and relatives of Judi for a fun day of tennis played in King of the Court format. The final winners of the Judi Chapman Cup for 2017 were Milo (from

Floreat) and Taryn. This is the fifth time this event has been held and FPTC members have always contributed to a good day of tennis & fundraising and deserve a pat on the back.

The paella pan was donated by Jason of Perth Paella Parties - a great idea if you are hosting a party. His cards are in the club and his website is www.perthpaellaparties.com.

au. Thanks also to the many people who donated prizes for the raffles.

MONDAY NIGHT FAST 4 TENNISDiv 3 team report by Paul Courtis

The winter season of fast four has begun with some new players added to the team. Welcome to Tyson Buzza and our reserve Russell Ward who join both myself, Steve Doran and Patrick Berg. Our start to this season has seen mixed results with 2 wins, one loss and one draw due to bad weather. But with all the guys playing well in the singles and doubles we strongly believe we can put some wins on the board in the few weeks. Our goal is to make it to the semi finals so hard work is what we aim to put in on court!!

Paul Courtis Fast 4 Team Coordinator

Farewell... Matt Carle

The club wishes Matt success with his new appointment at Dalkeith Tennis Cluband acknowledges his dedication over many years to FPTC especially the junior tennis programme. His friendly personality will be missed at Floreat.

Q: How about a favourite movie or actor?A: Leonardo DiCaprio and Inception maybe
