Sony Steals show at 999 MuchMusic Video Awards It was crazed, it was euphoric, and it was
occasionally out of control...but the one thing that the '99 MuchMusic Video Awards wasn't, was
boring. The 10th annual event, which has become one
of the highlights of the year in Canadian music, attracted a packed house of industry types inside
the fences, and a swarming throng of fans outside. The always -cheering masses were treated to
performances from the likes of Our Lady Peace, Len, David Bowie, Sky, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the
obvious crowd favourite, Britney Spears. The big winners on the night were Sony's Len,
who took home a trio of awards, including top video,
pop video and the People's Choice Award for

Virgin releasing new Ferry, Virgin Music Canada has announced the
forthcoming release of the 10th Bryan Ferry solo effort, As Time Goes By. In conjunction with the
October 19th release of that new album, Virgin is also re-releasing the entire Roxy Music and Bryan
Ferry catalogue. As Time Goes By is a collection of '30s crooner
standards, including the title track, I'm In The Mood For Love, Where Or When and The Way You Look
Tonight. Ferry has also overseen the digitally
remastering of the entire Ferry/Roxy Music back catalogue. Each album comes available in a special Japanese 'mini -vinyl' packaging format. Each CD
is in a slipcase designed to be similar to the original album artwork.
The Virgin re-releases began in August with five re -issues
- Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Country Life and Siren, which featured
the classic Love Is The Drug. The re -issues continued on September 14 with
favourite Canadian video, for their summer smash Steal My Sunshine. Sony scored another victory with
Edwin's Hang Ten, named as top rock video. The other big winner on the night were rap
artists Infinite, who won for both best rap and independent video for Take A Look.
The MMVAs were, as usual, a star-studded affair. Lengthy limos delivered the likes of Alice
Cooper, Kiss' Paul Stanley, Geri Haliwell, Christina Aguilcra, the Barenaked Ladies, and actress Tia
Can -ere, among many others. The partying went on into the early morning, long after the awards had
ended. A complete list of the '99 MMVA winners is
as follows:

Hurricane), Manifesto, and the live Viva! Roxy Music.
The next set of re -issues will arrive on September 28, and will include Ferry's first five solo
albums - These Foolish Things, Another Time, Another Place, In Your Mind, Let's Stick Together
and The Bride Stripped Bare. The final Ferry re -issues will arrive alongside
his new album, on October 19th. Those re-releases will include Boys And Girls (featuring the hit Slave
To Love), Bete Noire, Taxi and Mamouna. Bryan Ferry was at the forefront of Roxy Music throughout their 10 -album stint, alongside guitarist
Phil Manzanera, saxophonist Andy Mackay and keyboard trailblazer Brian Eno. Ferry embarked on
his solo career during Roxy Music's early years, eventually going on to record nine solo albums.

HMV Toronto to host MC competition
For the first time in Canada, a major retailer is hosting a live MC competition. The competition, to
be hosted by HMV's 333 Yonge Street store in Toronto, takes place October 2 at 1 pm, and features
10 finalists performing before a special panel of industry experts.
Potential applicants for the competition were required to submit a 3-5 minute demo tape of their
work. From the 65 demos that were received, the final ten finalists were chosen to compete in the head
- to -head competition.
The event will be hosted by Mastermind, and will feature DJ Serious, breakdancers Back II Basics, and DJ scratch crew Funky Technicians. The
competition will consist of three rounds. In the first round, the 10 finalists will each have three minutes
to rhyme themselves into the finals, over beats provided by DJ Serious. The judges will select a
final six to go to the second round, in which they will have a minute to freestyle about a topic they will be presented right before they go on.
From those six, the judges will then select a final three, who will freestyle against each other to
determine the winner. Guest judges for the event include Mastermind
(Energy Radio), freelance writer Celine Wong (Vibe, Honey, Rap Pages), Universal Music Canada's
director of A&R Dave Porter, DefJam USA's national director of college promotions Eddie
Rivere, and additional judges still to be determined.

The publicist did it!!! Got one of those DearWalsy Says letters. Don't get too many complaints, but this one was heart rendering and overlooked thehumour of what was intended. It went on to explainthat no one was driving ... we were all in the backseat. What's all that money among friends and a completedenial of any blame, problem or ego? (EC: All thatmoney ain't chickenfeed!!!) Where do I get all thisinfo? You got real good publicity and PR! (EC:Ingrate! Now you'll get another letter!!!)
Regarding the above!!! Please disregard!!! (EC:Ingrate!!!)
WS Millennium Project!!! Yes another awardspresentation. As I speak we are compiling the firstHall of Shame Awards nominees that will bepublished in an upcoming issue. If we have a Hallof Fame for people who do good ... why not a Hallof Shame for the fuckeruppers. After the nomineesare announced, there will be a voting ballot, a voteand a gala awards reception and perhaps a banquet! Here and now I have an exclusive. The officialnickname of the awards will be the Canadian MusicIndustry HOSer Awards. (EC: I get it! HOS ... Hallof Shame! !!)
Them what's nominated!!! Who ever led thefight to make the 30% which wasn't broken into35%. The really stupid award! Proposing a tax ontapes that gave people a licence to copy! Worth everycent! Spending $250,000 in secret to do a TVer thatwasn't that good! (EC: In secret you say???)Opening a restaurant and pissing off all the criticsso no one is his friend! I can go on! (EC: And hewill!!!) Next week more info on how you can qualifyfor the HOSer Award!
Riveted to our seats!!! I go to a few pressconferences every month. Many are for film, theatre, records, whatever. It was riveting to be at the pressconference that announced the upcoming productionof Lanza, a film about tenor legend Mario Lanza. The event was arranged by publicist Michel Levyas a continental breakfast at the Windsor ArmsCourtyard Cafe. Packed with cameras fromtelevision and the dailies, the follow-up wasrewarding. Do it well and they will come and cover!(EC: Hey! Waiter! More continental over here!!!)
Every inch a star! The diva ... the prima donna isback and every inch a star. The edge ... thetemperament and the talent is all still there! Nowget ready for a hit and international stardom. AM isready to attack the world again and this time she'llbe #1. (EC: Great talent!!!)
Poor public purse!!! Just standing there, lookingover the thousands who milled around below me atthe MuchMusic Video Awards ... I had to wonder ifthe people at CBC might be watching all this andwondering what TV was coming to? Would theyjust dismiss it? Laugh at it? Envy the originality?Or just continue their elitist attitude and low ratingsfor the artsy fartsy content and sports that is CBC!The video awards were very inventive. Well doneand possibly the envy of the world. You have tohand it to Moses and his people ... they've come upwith something that all the public dollars at CBCcould never come close to. I take my hat off! (EC:They upstaged the FF gala and now they make everyother award show look pale!!!) Moses rules! Cool!
Going country? Are you crazy??? Hey! Younever read it here, but those rumours about a majorrock station going country are just so much crap. Itwas tried in a major market once. Remember? Butwhen the novelty wore off and the listeners wentsomewhere else, it was time to pull the plug. Don'thold your breath for it to happen again. (EC: Nowdon't say you read it here!!!)
Here's a radio fact!!! CHFI's loveable teddy bear,Don Daynard is going to experience the luxury ofsleeping in. The 64 -year old who co -hosts themorning show with Erin Davis, will call it quits onDec. 10. But like all good and valued radiopersonalities, he'll stay on to voice over his SaturdayNight and Sunday Morning oldies shows. Noreplacement name yet, but we did hear that DO wasbeing considered. Now! If they're looking for a realoldies historian they should check out our classifiedsthis week. (EC: That's how some of these guys gottheir first jobs in radio!!!)
Not the time for change!!! Those people thirstingfor blood and hell bent on making changes shouldconsider the consequences of a new broom. Get abunch of negative thinkers in one room and youcome face to face with anarchy. I experienced that along time ago and, ironically, with the same negativethinkers who have recruited a few more. Chill out.Think of the great things that have happened overthe past ten years. The positives outweigh thenegatives. (EC: Who the hell are you talking aboutnow???)
Liar! Liar! Pants on fire!!! Can you imaginethewhole climb to the top was based on Lies, Lies, Lies, which have painted a pretty picture that only hascolour... but no substance. (EC: That's a riddle Ilike. It's got substance, not to mention innuendo!!!)

CARAS providing Band-Aid solution for schools Thanks to the assistance of CARAS, thirteen
Canadian schools will be able to keep their music programs alive, with Canada's musical future being
the ultimate winner in the deal. CARAS announced last week that 13 schools,
one for each province and territory, will receive $10,000 worth of band instruments from the
academy's Band-Aid program. The program is one part of the CARAS Music Education Program,
which was founded in 1996 from the Academy's share of the proceeds from the sale of the 25th
anniversary Juno box set, Oh What A Feeling. That program established as its mandates to `promote music education in Canada; to provide support to community organizations for the
establishment and furtherance of music education programs; and to provide assistance to exceptional
students enroled in music and recording industry related courses in various regions of Canada.'
The key element of the program is Band-Aid. The program had its beginnings with CARAS
donating $10,000 in instruments to three schools whose musical programs were in jeopardy. CARAS
dubbed the program Band-Aid because it is essentially a temporary solution to a serious problem
- the decimation of school music programs in
Canada. CARAS, with the help of the Coalition of
Music Education in Canada and each province's Music Educators' Association, asks schools seeking
support to submit applications. From a list of 10-15 finalists per province or territory, the CARAS Music
Education Advisory Committee chooses the final
schools. The winning schools then submit a shopping
list of instruments to CARAS, who foot the final bill.
The thirteen schools to receive $10,000 worth of band instruments for this school year include Sir
Charles Tupper Secondary School (Vancouver), Eagle Butte High (Dunmore, Alta.), Riverside
Community High (Prince Albert, Sask.), Gordon Bell High (Winnipeg), Lakewood School (Kenora,
ON), Rosemount High (Montreal), Victoria Street Middle School (Westville, N.S.), J.M.A. Armstrong
High/Salisbury Middle School (Salisbury, N.B.), Vernon River Consolidated School (Vernon River, P.E.I.), Mobile Central High (Mobile, Nfld.),
Inuksuk High/Naluit Music Society (Naluit, Nunavut), Vanier Catholic Secondary School
(Whitehorse) and Strings Across The Sky Fiddle Program (Inuvik, N.W.T.). "It was very difficult to cull the applications
down to one per province or territory," notes CARAS president Daisy Falle. "There is such a need for
support out there, with school music programs falling by the wayside every day. In some schools,
the instruments have been patched so often that the tonal quality is affected and it becomes difficult for
the students to properly measure their own progress." The 1998-99 recipients were Prince Albert
Central Institute in Prince Albert, Sask., Dante Aligheri Academy in Toronto, St. Michael's School
in Happy Valley -Goose Bay, Labrador, Mahone Bay School in Mahone Bay, N.S., and Fairview Jr. High
in Calgary.
Winter Garden Theatre fired up for big band swing Jeffrey Latimer, who heads up Toronto -based
TaurPro Entertainment and is a highly respected musical theatre entrepreneur, has finned Forever
Swing billed as a "rip-roaring, big band swing musical revue," for Toronto's Winter Garden Theatre. Previews begin Oct. 1 with a gala media opening for Oct. 13. TaurPro, Lutvick Productions
International and Rogers Communications are presenting the musical which is sponsored by Air
Canada. The musical comes to Toronto after 26 weeks
of record -breaking sales at Vancouver's Stanley Theatre.
"I've never experienced a musical that captured the spirit of its era quite like this production," said
Latimer. "It's a song and dance show that is pure entertainment for all ages. We've put together the
best designers in the country as well as an incredible Canadian cast of singers, dancers and musicians to
make Forever Swing bigger and better for its Toronto
debut." A 16 -track CD of Forever Swing by Dean Regan, recorded at Vancouver's Creation Studios is
available at retail. The CD was produced by Dave Pierce. A three -song CD sampler containing It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), In The Mood and Sing, Sing, Sing, three key tracks from
the 30 -song production, is also available. The big band musical is set in the late '30s and
early '40s and takes audiences on tour with the fictitious Tommy Vickers Band as they perform live on-stage to ballrooms and dance halls in North America and then head overseas to the London
Palladium during the '40s. Costuming of the 13 Canadian musicians and
dancers is in keeping with the era of jitterbugging, tap dancing routines and ballroom dancing.

Funding for the Mahone Bay School was eventually provided by EMI Music Canada, who
saw it as an opportunity to give back to an area of the country which had spawned so many of their
roster's artists. And the Fairview Jr. High funding came via Maverick/Wamer artist Alanis Morissette, who donated a portion of the proceeds from her May 4th concert at Calgary's Saddledome.
In '97-98, the Academy offered similar funding to Delview Jr. Secondary School (Delta, B.C.),
Toniata Public School (Brockville, ON), and Simonds High (St. John, N.B.), and provided $20,000 towards establishing an introductory recorder program for 900 students in East York and
Etobicoke, Ontario. Recently, five major record companies - BMG
Music Canada, EMI Music Canada, Sony Music Canada, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Canada
- pledged a total of $60,000 annually towards
the future health of the Band-Aid program. CARAS is also arranging for recording artists
to make 'official' presentations of the grants to the schools, to help bring attention to the problem of
declining music programs in schools. The first presentation will come from EMI artist Susan
Aglukark to Inuksuk High/Iqaluit Music Society on October 29.
The CARAS Music Education Program also offers $1,000 scholarships to students in 11 different trade and art schools across the country. The winning
students, chosen from a committee of instructors from each school, receive $1,000 each, a
commemorative certificate, a complimentary CARAS membership and two tickets to the Juno Awards. In addition to the Band-Aid program and
scholarship donations, the CARAS Music Education Fund has also contributed to several music
organizations in Canada, including the Songwriters' Association of Canada and the Canadian Music
Therapy Trust Fund.

Big Wreck's debut album for Atlantic/Warner Music Canada has been certified
double platinum in Canada. Released in September of 1997, the album has sold more than 200,000 units.
The album spawned four consecutive hits at rock radio, the first, The Oaf (My Luck Is Wasted), That Song, Blown Wide Open and Under The
Lighthouse. The band bumped up their image by joining
the Edgefest tour this past summer. They are currently working in the studio on their follow-up
album due early in 2000.

CHANTAL KREVIAZUK -PopColour Moving And StillColumbia -80391-HKreviazuk is just the latest prime -time musicaloffering from the province of Manitoba (noneed to recite all those who have come before),and didn't need a whole lot of time to becomea household name across the country with herdebut release. Under These Rocks And Stonesshowcased Kreviazuk's soulful vocals andstrong piano playing, and led by the hit leadsingle, Hard To Laugh, pushed the album tomulti -platinum success. Krevizauk also hadanother hit with her rendition of Leaving On AJet Plane, from the Armageddon soundtrack. In the two years since, she's been touring non-stop, often only with her piano, and writingsongs for her newest release, which shouldcontinue to expand her profile domestically, and perhaps bring her more notice southward.Colour Moving And Still contains similar piano -based songs, with Kreviazuk's voice rangingfrom powerful in some tunes, to near whisperin others. Before You, the first single from thealbum, is an uplifting, delightful pop song whichshould make serious inroads at AC and adultalternative radio. Aside from the positive vibesof Before You, the album dips and dives acrossnumerous emotional crests, from thepoignancy of M, to the immediate potency ofUntil We Die. The album was essentially acollaboration between Kreviazuk and producerJay Joyce (Wallflowers), who also providedmulti -instrumental support for the recordings. And just to keep the gossip -hounds happy, there's a couple of co -writing credits with OLP'sRaine Maida. -RR
OCEAN COLOUR SCENE -PopOne FromThe ModernIsland -314546674-JFunny the way it works - a band or artistbecomes a huge hit on one side, and only thenwill folks on the other side of the world eventhink about taking notice. The most obviousrecent example is Robbie Williams, who wasan enormous success in Britain and Europe, but was still virtually unrecognizable in NorthAmerica up until recently. Record companieshave always been cautious about when andwhere they release and album, but they're evenmore cautious these days, waiting until they'reabsolutely sure an album is a hit in one territorybefore unleashing it in another. The latestdemonstration of this principle is British pop
OCEAN COLOURSCENEONE FROM THE MODERN
band Ocean Colour Scene, who have alreadyenjoyed tremendous success in the UK withthis debut release, and are now trying to makea dent in Canada and the US. Slapping thetag phrase 'Beatlesque' on any new piece ofmusic is akin to digging its grave, but in thiscase, the phrase is more a description of theirstyle than any declaration of their potentialpopularity. The first song and single, Profit InPeace, is a somewhat anthemic piece of pop,and was the song that pushed this record tothe top overseas. But there is plenty of otherpossible hit material, and listening to trackslike I Am The News, Families or EmilyChambers (an obvious reference to EleanorRigby), it's obvious that this foursome wasspoon-fed the fab foursome in their youth.Given that North American fans tend to likemost things British, once they're a successover `ome, this one could do well. -RR
MARC ANTHONY -PopSelf -TitledColumbia -69726-HFollowing the lead of the way -too -successfulRicky Martin comes this fellow Latin croonerwho's also searching for across-the-boardacceptance. Anthony has already achievedtremendous success within the latincommunity, having twice sold -out MadisonSquare Gardens, and he also topped goldstatus in the US with his most recent latin/salsarelease, Contra La Corriente. On top of that,Anthony (his real name is Marco Antonio
Muniz) is also an actor, having been the firstperson cast in Paul Simon's Broadway effortThe Capeman, and having recently appearedin Martin Scorcese's upcoming film, BringingOut The Dead. For this release, Anthony wasput in the capable production hands of EmilioEstefan, whose enormous presence in theLatino field is unparalleled, as well as producer/songwriter Cory Rooney, who's powerfulproduction provides a sturdy cushion forAnthony's hearty vocals. A minute into the leadtrack, When I Dream At Night, is all theevidence you need that Anthony is primed togive Martin a run for his money. The bestdescription of the musical style might be latinsoul, and Anthony clearly has the pipes to dothe job. I Need To Know has been taken as thefirst single, and it's meringue/mambo-esquestyle should make some noise at AC radio.Other notable tracks include My Baby You,Don't Let Me Leave, and She's Been Good ToMe. Also noteworthy are the three spanishlanguage tracks, including Da La Vuelta, co -written and produced by Estefan. Given thesuccess they've already enjoyed with Martin,Sony obviously knows what they're doing inthis genre, so another big hit here wouldn't bea surprise. -RR
OFEO DUO - ClassicalEnesco - ImpressionsMarquis Classics -81239-FThe music of Romanian Georges Enesco(when and why was the respelling from Enescudeemed necessary?) is, like that of so manyof his contemporaries, decidedly nationalistic
melodically. And, that's good because nomatter the transcription, that specific qualitytranscends. It's abundantly evident here as theOrfeo Duo of brother and sister Vita (violin)and Ishmael Wallace (piano) perform a numberof his short compositions. Her violin voice issweet; his piano is strong and/or subservientas the music dictates. In other words, they area duo -- not soloist and accompanist -- and,as such, do full justice to the composer's intentNot surprisingly, the most enjoyable track isthe title one in which ten impressions aremusically conjured up in 25 minutes. That'strack #5 and the uninitiated must be careful todetermine each one since they are playedseamlessly. Our favourite is the palpable Ventdans la cheminee (Wind in the Chimney) withits memory, to us, of childhood nights sleepingin front of a fireplace during winter. -BW
DUO TERGEON - ClassicalRomantic Dances For Piano DuetMarquis Classics -81241-FNot all music is danceable but all dances aremusical. So it's not surprising that so manycomposers have found inspiration in adaptingfolk music for, or composing their own, dances.Among them are Roger, Schubert, Brahms,Moszkowski, Dvorak and Greig. They arepresented here in 20 romantic dancesperformed with élan by the husband and wifeDuo Turgeon -- Edward and Anne Louise onsingle piano. All are delightful and a positivetonic to the soul. On a more practical note, allare short and just right for classical radioprogrammers with top of the hourconsiderations to be met. Indulge us pleasewith a personal recollection. Though they areboth now gone, we once had a pair of stepbrothers who played piano duets more or lessunder duress of their father. They'd race oneanother to see who would finish first so theycould go out and play street hockey! Even theyhowever, would have appreciated and enjoyedDuo Turgeon. -BW

KYE MARSHALL QUARTET - Gentle JazzWinter's EndDDD-47772Miss Marshall plays her own jazz compositionsfor cello ably accompanied by the admirableDon Thompson on piano who produced thealbum and an excellent rhythm section. jazzfor cello? Why not? There's nothing gimmickyabout it and the sound produced here is simplyfine. The jazz isn't hot but neither is it cool. It'ssimply fine music played in simply fine mannerwith a nice legato quality to all of thecompositions. In fact, one is muchly remindedof some of Leroy Anderson's jazz inflectedworks such as Jazz Legato. The appeal of thealbum should be twofold in that classical musicaficionados will enjoy it as much as jazzfollowers. In fact, a retailer could well doublerack in both jazz and classical. Recorded atLyndian Sound. 100% MAPL. -BW
BROOKS & DUNN - CountryTight RopeArista -18895-NAfter a run of 67 weeks on the RPM CountryAlbums chart, this release falls into the longoverdue category. But the timing couldn't bebetter. Missing You, the first track taken as asingle, made an immediate impact at radio andthe boys appear to be on their way to havinganother hit which will fuel whet the customerappetites, now that the album is in the stores.By the way, Missing You is the cover of JohnWaite's #1 single (RPM - Oct. 8/84) which was
ALBUM PICKTORI AMOSTo Venus And BackAtlantic -83242-PFew artists have the type of loyal fan base and dedicated following that Amos enjoys. Zipthrough the internet on a search, and you're bound to come up with a multitude of websites dedicated to the artist, all of them created by rabid fans who can't seem to getenough. With this new release, Amos fans should be in a frenzy. The two -CD set is amixture of both the old and the new. Disc one features 11 all -new tracks, which againfeature the ingenious rhythms and potent piano flourishes that have come to signifyAmos' sound. What's always made her style so attractive is the disparate combination ofthe throbbing rhythms and pounding keyboards, matched alongside Amos' soaringsoprano. The effect is almost always a haunting one, offering images and atmospheresthat one rarely finds in more straight -aheadpop material. Like other, more progressiveartists, Amos isn't afraid to experiment withdiverse instrumentation and often disjointedrhythms. But it's her ability to provide anaddictive melodic line amidst the uncommonchaos of her rhythms that makes her workso attractive. Bliss has been taken as the firstsingle of the first CD, and provides a fine introinto the remaining 10 tracks. Other notableentries amongst the new material areConcertina, Glory. Of The '80s, Josephineand Spring Haze. For the second disc, Amoshas offered a sprinkling of some of her best-known material, including her biggest song,Cornflake Girl, as well as Precious Things, Bells For Her, Cloud On My Tongue andWaitress. Given the intense affinity her fans have shown for her artistry, you can expectsolid retail movement on this release. -RR

KYE MARSHALL QUARTET -
Gentle Jazz Winter's End
DDD-47772 Miss Marshall plays her own jazz compositions
for cello ably accompanied by the admirable Don Thompson on piano who produced the
album and an excellent rhythm section. jazz for cello? Why not? There's nothing gimmicky
about it and the sound produced here is simply fine. The jazz isn't hot but neither is it cool. It's
simply fine music played in simply fine manner with a nice legato quality to all of the
compositions. In fact, one is muchly reminded of some of Leroy Anderson's jazz inflected
works such as Jazz Legato. The appeal of the album should be twofold in that classical music
aficionados will enjoy it as much as jazz followers. In fact, a retailer could well double
rack in both jazz and classical. Recorded at. Lyndian Sound. 100% MAPL. -BW
BROOKS & DUNN - Country Tight Rope
Arista -18895-N After a run of 67 weeks on the RPM Country
Albums chart, this release falls into the long overdue category. But the timing couldn't be
better. Missing You, the first track taken as a single, made an immediate impact at radio and
the boys appear to be on their way to having another hit which will fuel whet the customer
appetites, now that the album is in the stores. By the way, Missing You is the cover of John

R EATTA Self -titled
RCD-001 (Independent) As the producer of this album, Bill MacNeil,
points out "Imagine a Cape Breton Irish family not singing celtic music?" However, like many
Cape Breton musical groups, Reatta introduces a unique sound that not only
encompasses traditional, contemporary and new country, but a pop influence that will bring
Reatta into the mainstream. The O'Briens who make up Reatta are Darcy (lead vocals, guitar),
Erin (lead and harmony vocals), Pius, their father (vocals, rhythm guitar), and uncle Blair
(keyboards, harmony vocals). The session pickers aren't too shabby either, and deserve
a mention; Bruce Timmins (electric and acoustic guitars), Wayne O'Handley (bass),
Lonnie Jones (drums), Ray Legere (fiddle and mandolin), Bob McDonald (pedal steel and
dobro), and Dan Doiran (keyboard programming). The song material was
obviously very carefully picked, reflecting the powerful vocal qualities of Erin and Darcy.
There isn't a clunker among the 13 tracks. Never Met A Rock, with Erin on vocals, has
- Country
been taken as the first single, a perfect end of summer offering. The Ron Irving/Dave Pickell penning of It's Not Over TilYou Cry is a ballad
that's right down the middle with emotion with that important mass appeal connection Finally
Fine, written by MacNeil, Erin O'Brien, Scott Phillips and Michael Hussey, has hit written
all over it, and that's Erin on vocals. If you want to feel real complete, patch into Darcy's
memorable interpretation of The Land, written by Jon McElroy and Jeff Rea. Recorded at
Truro's In Session Recording. -WG
ADAM SANDLER -Comedy Stan And Judy's Kid
Warner Bros. -47429-P Because Mr. Sandler needs a little bit more
money in the pocket of his baggy jeans, he decided to release this new comedy epic,
which should confirm his enormous popularity with the kiddies. Sandler is without a doubt THE
hottest act in comedy today (aside from maybe Chris Rock), and it seems as though any new
movie he releases is automatically a hit, no matter how silly or sophomoric the humour. Big Daddy was a hit before it even hit the theatres,
symbolic of just how big this SNL refugee has become. This latest release features Sandler's
usual array of goofiness and jocularity, and is definitely not aimed at anyone under the age
of 18. If you really want to be daring, let your kids listen to the intro bit, Hot Water Burn Baby,
,.
but then quickly shut it down, because the rest is not for virgin ears. That opening skit is pretty
funny, as are some of the other elements, like The Peeper, Dee Wee (My Friend The Massive
Idiot), Welcome My Son and The Psychotic Legend Of Uncle Donnie. Without a doubt,
however, the highlight of this release is Sandler's Sinatra-esque pipes on the big band
tune, She Comes Home To Me. Listen to the band swing, listen to Sandler doing his best
THAT 70'S SHOW (Rockin' and Jammin') Various Artists
Volcano/Zomba-33013-N If you are one of those who hasn't quite had it up to here with the seventies revival,
then by all means check out this pair of CDs, released in conjunction with the hit - ABC-TV series. It's somewhat amusing that the
decade of the seventies was slammed endlessly by critics for its lack of quality music, and yet, time and
time again of late we get more rehashings of seventies music, not to mention the infiltration of seventies style
into our current fashion houses, films and television productions. An optimistic person might suggest that
the revisionists are finally catching on to what was a great thing all along. But a less -than -optimistic fellow
might think that the current creative community is simply reaching for something that sells. Whatever
the reasoning, this set of albums should do reasonably well at retail, given the revived interest in
the era and the success of the
show. The first disc, Rockin', features as
its lead single the title theme from the show, as performed by Cheap Trick, a track unavailable
on any other album. The rest of the album is a - slew of seventies big -hair faves, such as
Golden Earring's Radar Love, B.T.O.'s Let It Ride, Argent's Hold Your Head Up and Ted
Nugent's Hey Baby. The second album, Jammin', is more dance/funk-oriented, featuring such immortals as K.C. & The
Sunshine Band (Get Down Tonight), Parliament (Tear The Roof Off That Sucker),
Kool & The Gang (Jungle Boogie), The Spinners (Rubberband Man), and the inevitable Play That Funky Music by Wild
Cherry. Even though most seventies fans probably have all of this stuff in their aging stacks of wax, they may scoop this collection up, if only to have
some of these classics on CD. -RR
Ole Blue Eyes impression, and you'd think there's been some sort of revelation with the
ageless Sandier. But then those first lyrics hit home, and you finally get the joke: `I got a girl
and I don't mean to boast/But she loves me the most/Even though she's a highly paid
whore' Afraid we can't relay any more of the lyrical content than that, or we might get in
serious trouble with the authorities. It seems like anything Sandler puts his name on sells
these day -
witness The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer, and the aforementioned Big
Daddy. Needless to say, this thing should be a hit. -RR
PAUL McCARTNEY Run Devil Run
Capitol -22351-F The Beatles were always concerned, first and
foremost, with rock 'n roll. Ask any Beatlemaniac who followed the Fab Four's
career from front to back, and they'll tell you that, aside from all the orchestral flourishes
-Pop
and intricate compositions that filled their later work, the thing that made The Beatles so big
in the beginning was their ability to rock and roll with the best of them. All those youthful
years listening to American rock and rhythm and blues ultimately filtered into their own
music, a musical style they honed to crystaline perfection in the clubs of Hamburg. For this
new release, his first in some time, Paul McCartney has elected to go back to his roots,
covering some of his own favourite rock and roll and R&B tracks, many of which will be
somewhat obscure to the average bear. McCartney brought together a handful of select
players this past March and jammed out a collection of rock and rockabilly favourites of
his, which should provide ample demonstration of his undying affinity for the oldies but goodies.
The lead single, Run Devil Run, is one of only three McCartney offerings on this new album.
The rest are by some of the legendary early writers from the rock and roll scene -
Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Larry
Williams, and others. Included in his very tight band are Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour,
heavy metal drum-meister Ian Paice, as well as guitarist Mick Green, keyboardist Pete
Wingfield, drummer Dave Mattacks and keyboardist Geraint Watkins. While there are
some obscurities brought to the surface here (Williams' She Said Yeah, Bishop/Watson's No
Other Baby, Chuck Berry's Brown -Eyed Handsome Man), there's also some more
traditional favourites like Elvis' All Shook Up and I Got Stung, and the Ricky Nelson hit
Lonesome Town. McCartney will always have a fan base, so this on should do well. -RR

ckmarket's Patria has been firmed for a feature showcase at the Urban Music Festival in Ottawa. She will appear on The Milkman's show
on KOOL-FM on Oct. 8, followed by her first show at The Other Side Night Club. The next day she plays
the RJ Boom -Boom Saloon. Patria's first single Baby Feel My
... from her debut album My Rules
has been getting major exposure across the country, particularly on Ottawa's CKKL-FM. A remix
version of the title track has been taken as the follow- up single.
Vancouver -based JAR is currently working its
way back west with major dates in New York City at CBGB's (Oct. 5), Quebec City, Montreal,
Sherbrooke, London, Ottawa, Toronto, Sault Ste. Marie, Lethbridge and Burnaby where they wind
up their tour at Studebakers on Oct. 31. Comprising vocalist Garth Allen, guitarist Bryan Fratesi,
drummer Rob Wade and Tommy MacDonald on bass, the band continues to turn heads and make sales with their 1998 release of Knottskull, a full-
length album that was given "a slicker sound" by Mike Plotnikoff (KISS, Van Halen, INXS) who
looked after the board chores and mixing. Contact Terry Cuddeford or Clyde Hill at Amar Management

Emm Gryner has been invited to tour with David Bowie for the next four weeks. The independent
artist from Forest, Ontario, began back-up vocalist duties on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live (Oct. 2), with an Oct. 4 date to follow on the David
Letterman show, Wembley Stadium in London (9) and three weeks on the road in Europe. Gryner
apparently got the gig when Holly Palmer (Reprise Records) suggested that she would be perfect for
the job. Palmer, who is also travelling with Bowie, is the female voice on his new single Thursday's
Child. Gryner has just put the finishing touches on her self -produced album Science Fair which is being
released on her own Dead Daisy label. A US release is being targeted for the end of October. She returns to Canada to tour in early November where she will be opening for Ron Sexsmith.
Lion King tickets go on sale Oct. 18. The musical, to be staged at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre,

CBC News is under heavy scrutiny once again, following the recent resignation of Robert Culbert,
CBC-TV's head of news, current affairs and Newsworld since 1994. Culbert's departure has once
again fuelled speculation that massive cutbacks are coming for the national broadcaster in the coming months. According to a recent article in the Toronto
Star, one scenario being considered is the consolidation of all of CBC's news services, be it
national or regional, television or radio, even French or English, thereby eliminating all possible
duplication. Executive vice-president James McCoubrey has been acting president of the CBC
since Perrin Beatty's departure in July, and many inside the Mother Corp. have fears about the future
of the organization if McCoubrey is appointed full- time president by Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
McCoubrey has reportedly expressed concerns about what he sees as a left-wing bias' in CBC news
reporting, and it is rumoured that Chretien is also critical of the CBC's journalistic practices. There is
continued speculation that up to 700 jobs may be cut at the CBC in the coming months, although
officials say nothing has been decided yet.

Beverley Mahood and Lace debuting on 143 Rev:nodsby Ron RogersWhipping through Toronto to do some quick pressand promotion interviews, Canadian country artistBeverley Mahood has the upbeat sound of someonewho's life is taking a dramatic upswing.
Mahood was in town to promote the upcomingdebut release from Lace, a new country trio featuringherself, fellow Kitchener native Giselle, and TexanCorbi Dyann. The group is the latest offering fromnoted producer David Foster, who signed the ladiesto his 143 Records label.
The 25 year -old Mahood has been shuttlingback and forth between Canada and Nashville overthe past several months. Prior to this past week, shewas in Ottawa for the CCMA Awards, which shedescribed as crazy, but still a ton of fun.
"They're always so busy. You go in thinkingthat you're just going to take it easy and have fun,and you get there and you find maybe two secondsfor yourself. Because I'm the type of person thatlikes to be involved in everything. I might beexhausted, but if there was a jam night happeningin the hotel, it might be two o'clock in the morningand I don't care, that's fun. So I ended up doing thata couple of nights."
Mahood is, in many ways, a typical countrymusic story. Her family emigrated to Canada fromNorthern Ireland when she was just six, and thenproceeded to move more than 20 different timesduring her youth, before settling just outside ofLondon, Ontario.
As is often the case with precocious artists,Mahood was performing for family and friends whilestill in grade school. In fact, she had her first gig atthe age of six, joining Anne Murray on stage at acountry jamboree to sing Little League In Heaven.
Although one would expect a six year -old tobe terrified sharing the stage with a legend like AnneMurray, Mahood says that her love of performingovercame any potential stage fright.
"I would do anything just to be on stage. I guessmy first stage was my parent's coffeetable, becauseI wanted to sing or dance for anybody. So whenpeople ask me if I was scared (singing with AnneMurray), I just thought 'no way', because on stageis where I've always felt the most comfortable."
By the age of 12, she had won the CanadianOpen Country Singing Contest, performing PatsyCline's Crazy. It was around that same time that shemet noted producer Rick Hutt, best known for hiswork with The Northern Pikes and Tom Cochrane.
Mahood ended up giving Hutt an impromptuperformance, singing Madonna's Like A Virgin andPatsy Cline's Crazy alongside her own portablekaraoke machine.
"And I wasn't sure whether he liked it, or if hewas kind of scared. I was singing very true -to -heart

songs, you know. Like A Virgin's a very good songfor a 11 year -old girl to sing. And he couldn't believethat this 11 year -old was standing there. But I'm socomfortable singing for people, and I was just staringhim down, and I still do that to this day."
Mahood says that the pair began workingtogether right away, working on songs and demoson weekends and during the summer months. Shealso began getting her first professional jobs, singingon jingles and television commercials, as well asperforming background vocals for the likes of JamieWarren.
After a couple of years working alongside Hutt, the time eventually arrived for Mahood to recordher own record. Hutt was so impressed by her writingtalents that he insisted that Mahood write the entirerecord herself.
Although she was flattered that Hutt was thatimpressed by her writing, she was also anxious aboutthe time it would take to write that much material, and was eager to start recording.
"I was so excited to do a record. So I thought,
'okay, let's find all the songs', because I wanted todo it so fast. That was just me being excited, andalso being young. And they said, 'we'll do a record, but you've got to write at least one song'. The firstsong I wrote was Girl Out Of The Ordinary, andthat's when I thought, 'you know, I don't care howlong it takes, I want to write this whole record'."
The first single from the album was Girl OutOf The Ordinary, a song Mahood wrote about thevarying experiences she had as a child, moving sooften from town to town, and how it helped shapeher own outgoing personality.
And she still remembers the first time she heardthat first single on the radio, an experience that anyburgeoning artist would treasure.
"I was actually driving from London back toKitchener, and as soon as I got in my car, the songwas on. At first I thought, 'what is this?' And whenI realized it was me, my foot was to the floor. It wasso exciting, you live your whole life dreaming ofthat moment."
The song, co -written with Mark Dineen, endedup going top ten in Canada on the country charts, and was soon followed by another single, LittleThing Called Love, which also hit the top ten.
The response within the industry wasimmediate. Mahood won the CMT top indie artistin 1997, and the Big Country Rising Star Awardthat same year. The following year she received her
first Juno nod (female country artist), and laterreceived five CCMA nominations, winning for topindependent female artist.
It was during the 1997 CCMAs that her destinytook another turn, however. Hall of Fame producerDavid Foster was looking for female country talentfor a new group he was forming. The call soon wentout to Mahood, who jumped at the opportunity.
"Ralph Murphy had caught one of mySongwriter's Cafe performances two years ago atthe CCMAs, and he called David. He'd just startedthe 143 label, and Ralph called him and said 'there'sthis one girl, you have to see her'. And he'd seenmy video on CMT and wondered who I was. So aweek later I flew down to meet David, sang a verseand chorus of True Love Never Goes Out Of Style, and that was it."
That was the beginnings of what is now knownas Lace, the new country female trio, who's debutself -titled release is soon to be out on the 143Records label, distributed by Warner.
Mahood says that after she first signed withFoster, there was several more days of auditioningpotential partners, before she finally tipped Fosterto another talent singer from her own backyard ofsouthwestern Ontario.
"He had a bunch of girls in mind, and I spentabout a week with these girls. And I said, 'you knowwhat David, I don't know why my best friend Giselleisn't here?' So we flew Giselle down the next day,and that was it. You can imagine when we calledher at her insurance job."
The two old friends made a perfect team in thestudio, but there was still the third piece to be addedto the puzzle. Again, the auditioning continued, butas Mahood points out, finding a voice to match withthe two others can be tricky.
Eventually, they heard Corbi Dyann's tape, andknew there was something special in her voice.Ultimately, Dyann flew up to Canada to meet withMahood and Giselle, and the three hit it off rightaway.
Foster, of course, is well-known in the businessfor the tremendous success he's enjoyed with thelikes of Chicago, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston,Toni Braxton, Barbra Streisand and Madonna. Whilethis doesn't represent Foster's first foray into thecountry field, the trio's decision to record withFoster, outside of the Nashville realm, indicates thegroup's willingness and desire to be different.
In addition to Foster, the album also featuresthe production work of Chris Farren, HumbertoGatica and Hutt. Along with a pair of their own songs- Mahood's True Love and Giselle's He Can't TalkWithout His Hands - the album also features songsthe ladies hand-picked for the album, including acover of Sarah McLachlan's recent hit, Angel, whichwas produced by Foster.
When fans see the cover of the album, featuringa trio of blonde women, the immediate comparisonwill be to the red-hot Dixie Chicks. But Mahoodsays that beyond the fact that it's three females, there's really no comparison musically.
"To me it's all in the music. When you go dothese radio shows, that's the first thing in their mind, but when you sing for them, they see there isn't anycomparison. It's the music, it's the music that setsyou apart. And the funny thing is, we had startedthis record before the Dixie Chicks came out. Peoplesay we're just copying them, but David had had thisidea before they came out."
Mahood, meanwhile, continues to enjoysuccess on her own. The Way A Woman Feels, thelatest single from her Girl Out Of The Ordinary CD,was up to #67 on the latest RPM Country 100 chart(RPM - Sept. 27/99). Meanwhile, the lead singlefrom Lace, I Want A Man, has just been released toCanadian radio, with the full album slated for anOctober release.
