Where Are We Going?Who can avoid letting his thouglits

project over the next ten years as a decade opens? Where are we going? Whatare the objectives of Toronto ChristianMission? What plans are being formulated?

Where are we going? WhereverGodopens the doors! As the decade of the

60's opened, we liad no idea that Godwould lead us into a European ministry;bu t as weeks turned t o m onth s an d

months turned to years, we saw God's

hand guiding ever so clearly. One door

opened; we stepped through. Anotherdoor opened; another step. Greater doorsopened and greater steps on faith wererequired. In the 70's we shall continue

our policy of entering every door Godopens for us.

We shall go never forgetting "allthings are possible" with God. We haveventured into areas where man has said,

"Nothing can be done! " And this wast rue as far as man's ability was concerned,bu t God can do all things. To enter a

country where you know no one, and yetthe one man you find who speaks Englishis a New Testament Christian, makes youvery aware of God's power to do the impossible!

We shall go, knowing He answersprayer. What one i llustrat ion shall I usefrom the hundreds of experiences wehave had with God answering prayer?Dewey Thackston, ou r co-laborer in

years and that he has a limited time tolive. Everywhere 1 went on a speakingtour in the fail, I requested prayer forDewey. In mid-December the doctor informed Dewey his organs are now nor

mal. The doctor frankly said it wasbeyond him how this should happen.

As we enter th e 70's, let's not fo r

get th at o ur Lord is Almighty God, whoopens doors, who is influenced by theeffectual fervent prayers of His people. With these thougli ts clearly in mind, weshare some plans being formulated that

will enable us at Toronto Christian Mis

Church Builders Club offerings helppay for this mob ile u ni t in Hamilton,

Ontar io .

We see no radical change taking

place in Toronto Christian Mission in theyears ahead, as far as the thrust of thework is concerned. We ant icipate con

tinued evangelistic work in Canada, bu tare aware by financial support , correspondence, and interest when on speakingtours th at our supporters want us to doall humanly possible to increase our workin Europe. This will be the general direct ion th e work takes.

In Canada th e workers in th e Mis

sion are all engaged in the programs of

th e local churches. Their e duc at io n a nd

experience qualify them to giveexcellentassistance to the Canadian brethren. Cau

t ion is e xe rt ed t o make certain American

the Mission stand ready to assist in everyway possible for the good of the Kingdom.

A Director fo r th e Canadian work

or some other new approach to witnessing for Christ. This missionary will alsoguide the expansion of the youth phaseof the work, taking full advantage of

tion wij] be given. Plans call for TorontoChristian Mission to establish a "CliristianService Center" in western Europe in1971. From this "Center" we expect atleast three American Missionary familiesto be reaching into the communist worldby the close of 197). By the end of thedecade, we anticipate numerous familiesworking from this "Christian ServiceCenter". Our prayers are that manypolitical barriers now in exis tence willhave been removed by the close of the70's, thus enabling a great and effectualdoor to open to your missionaries inEurope.

Toronto Christian Mission has co n

tracted for a camper which was fabricatedfor the owner of anautomobileagency inGermany. He used the camper only onceand sold it to the Mission for half-price.Lenora and 1 will use this as our home

during two to four months of evangelisticvisitation in 1970. In 1971 the camperwill be used by individuals from supporting churches in America who will goto Europe, follow an itinerary arrangedby the Mission and visit churches and

Christians in various eastern Europeancountries. With th e arrival of new families

and the expansion of the work, we anti

cipate the expanded use of this "camperministry". Such face to face contact withChristians in these countries is of greatimportance.

The Radio Ministry must be expanded. Radio allows us to have weeklycontac t with people in these count ries, much like a minister ha s cont ac t w i th liis

people as he preaches from the pulpit onSunday. Finding stations that will allowus to preach the message of New Testa

ment Christianity is no t easy, bu t webelieve it will be possible to broadcast inevery major language of Europe beforethe end of the 70's. This is our goal.Today it looks impossible, but with Godall things are possible.

Red Square, Moscow

k

Czecho s lo v ak ian s e r v ic e

The Printing Ministry is rapidlyexpanding as the decade starts. By theend of 1970 weexpect to have tracts andbooklets available in Russian, Polish,Czechoslovakian, Hungarian, Rumanian, and Bulgarian. Titlesin all these languageswill be expanded throughout the 70's. Weexpec t t o prepare materials in numerous

other languages of Europe. The monthlyRussian languagemagazine must continueand reach an ever growing group of readers. Otiier periodicals will be consideredas interest and opportunity develop.

To accomplish this extensive workin Europe we must have a strong base of

operation in Canada. Capable personnelwith knowledge of various languages areneeded for editorial work, radio work, and printing. Some individual will berequired to coordinate all the work of the

Mission. An informationdirector respon-

sible for keeping Christians in Ame

fully informed of activities of missaries so that they may suppor t the wintelligently will also be needed. Dcated typists and other office work

willbe the "unsung heroes" wlio keepmaterials moving from Toronto out i

the field. Undergirding all of thworkers are devoted Christians, like ywho pray faithfully for all of us wlabor for Christ through Toronto Cht ian Mission.

To carry on tliis work requthousands of dollars now, and as

work expands more thousands willneeded. Salaries are necessary. Printcosts are higli. (I say the press "ea

money like it's good! ) Radio brocasting is expensive. Office space frwhich to work iscostly. Postage has g"out of sight." But I have faith in G

and in you, ou r fellow Christians. In13 years Toronto Christian Mission

existed, you have contributed so fafully that every month's books have bclosed in the black, a lthougli sometit he b al an ce h as b ee n less t ha n o ne dol

We pledge to God and to you that webe faithful stewards of all funds yforward to Toron to Christian Mission

preaching the gospel of Christ. If yhave been sharing with us in this work

the 60's, we thank you and we pray ywill continue your suppor t as we mforward in the 70's. If you have not binvolved in the work of th e Miss

please consider the challenge of this wand become actively engaged as you pacipate financially in taking Christ tocommunis t world in the 70's.

fo r future activities of th e Mission took

form. Long time thouglits to establish a"Christian Service Center" in Europecrystalized. A clear recruiting policy wasformulated. Following a standing vote ofappreciation the Committee requestedGene Dulin to continue as Director of

During theAdvisory Committee MeeUi^, Deceinber 30, 1969, theCommittee unanimouslyvotfid to giveyou a vote of confidence Inyourworkas Directorof theToronto ChristianMission . The chairman asked me to send it lo you in writing.

It was not onlya voteofconiideuee, but also a warmpersonal commendaUon fromeachmanpresent. We have all admired yourwork through theyears andafter reviewing theworkof theMission in detaU wefeit that youdeserved this word of appreciation from your co-labore rs in spreading t he gospe l of Christ.

It was also our thinkingthat a wordof appreciation begiven to Lenora as well. Weareaware that she also has workedunselfishly in the Mission. Wewanther to know that she andthe girls also have done a fine job.

Eachmanwas very favorably impressed with theefficient andbusiness like mannerthatyouand yourco-laborers had preparedfor theAdvisory Committee Meeting. Please expressto the other members of the Toronto Christian Mission our hearty thanks for the goodworkthateachone is doing. Becauseof yourworkbeforehand, each manfelt that his time wasweUspentin coming toToronto. We felt thatmuch had beenaccomplished. iOften I say, "Wemust slow down a bit. Next month won't be so busy, " Lenora always responds,"Oh, yes? Just wait and see!" And sure enough "next month" i s bus ie r! If February proves to

be busier than January, I rather doubt tha t we 'l l survive.

We are in the midst of an aggressive recruiting program to add personnel to Toronto ChristianMission to implement decisions made by the missionaries and Advisory Committee in December. Thebasic decision is '/tio, continue the Canadian work and expand the European work. " To do this mean

we must have help since al l the missionaries are already working beyond capacity. To do this re

cruiting, we have made telephone calls, written letters, had prospective missionaries come to Toronto for discussions, and have traveled to the U.S. to talk to some prospective missionaries. Many

hours have beenspent

onthis,

and results canalready

be announced. Otherprospects

are seekingthe Lord's will as they consider using their life as a missionary. Please pray with them for guidan

Alan LaBue and his family have decided to move to Toronto from Hamilton, Ontario, to-give leadesliip to the Canadian phase of the work of T. C. M. His six years in Canada, plus his dedication andability, qualifies him exceptionally well for this big responsibility. His move to Toronto will giverenewed vigor to the Canadian work and allow me to give more attention to the European work,

Linda Romesburg is moving to Toronto from Pittsburg to work in our office as secretary. She graduated from Kentucky Christian College last spring and spent one summer as a mission intern in

Europe. Kei* interest in Europe will likely lead her into the European phase of the work in tiiefuture

In addition to regular activities, (1) year-end receipts have been prepared and mailed; (2) severalhours have been consumed by planning sessions for the June Missionary Group Tour; (3) plans for

the extended missionary tour by Lenora and me are being made; (This will keep us in Europe afterthe June tour until November.) (4) beginning work of giving up our apartment in Toronto is under

way; (5) additional office space required carpentery work and moving of eqiipment; (6) careful

thought is being given to the Lincoln Christian College student tour sponsored by the Mission when

they will be witnessing to U. S. and European col lege students in Europe this summer.

Last September on^he missionary tour, Lienora and I met a young Australian couple in Rumania.

Their determination to "see the wor ld" had led them to London where they worked a few months, q

their jobs, and traveled into Europe. They planned to come to Toronto soon. On arrival this month

they contacted us. While seaorohing for an apartment and employment we kept them in our home an

were able to in t roduce them to Chr is ti an s a t the Keele Street church. We find i t exci t ing as we consider Lenora and me—two American citizens living in Canada—witnessing for Christ in Rumania

to two Australians living in England and bf^ir^ able to lead them to churchbackhome! HowGodwor

All of these plans and blessings are possible because Christians like you stand behind us so faith

ful ly with prayer support and financial assistance. Just this week I talked with a Toronto business

man who is well acquainted with our work. When I told him our income, he couldn't believe we

could accomplish so much on such a small amount of money. It is possible only because themissio

aries receive barely a living wage, and because God multiplies the effectiveness of the dollars in

response to our prayers and the prayers of thousands like you. We say over and over, "Thank

God fo r His guidance and for faithful f riends l ike you. "

Serving Him and you,

ABOUT SPEAKING DATES

A missionary from Toronto Christian

Mission is speaking in your area. Haveyou ever wondered how the speaking

date was arranged? Have you consid

ered how the missionary decides to be

in one area and not in another? Perhaps you would appreciate knowing thepolicy we follow at Toronto Christian

Mission regarding speaking dates.

Our purpose for traveling to churchesacross America i s first of all to exal t

the Lord Jesus Christ. By telling of

victories won in His name, we hope toinspire Christians and strengthen the

faith of t he Chu rch. Our second desi re

is to st ir interest in world-wide evan

gelism. God has opened many doors

and poured a mul ti tude of blessings on

us who work w ith Tor on to Christian

Mis si on . A s we tell of t he se v i ct or ie s

in the name of Christ, we hope to liftth e vision of lo ca l c hu rc he s across

America that they may see th e thousands

of open doors placed before them. A

third purpose for speaking is to informpeople of th e work of Toronto Christian

Mission. We wan t peopl e who support

us to know what is being accomplished.By visiting churches and missions

commi t t ees this information is made

readily available to those who share

in the work being done. Obviously a

program as e x te n si ve a s tha t of Toronto

Chr is t ian Mission needs a broad base

of support. We hope by informing others

of th e work they will become interested

and actively involved in suppor ting theefforts of th e Mission.

As a speaking i tinerary is arranged,t he m is si on ar y from Toronto Christian

Mission a lway s g iv es con si de ra ti on to

invi tat ions of churches tha t have wr it ten

requesting a presentation o f th e work of

the Mission. We never turn down a speak

in g date because of t he si ze o fa church, even though it may be very small. Wenever charge for a presentation, bu t

we ar e aware t ha t t ravel expenses must

be covered if th e missionary is to stay

on th e road. We keep a file of all letters

i n v i t i n g one of ou r miss ionar ies to

speak. As an i ti n er ar y i s planned, re fe r

ence is made to this f il e, a nd c hu rc he s

with reques ts are given first cons idera

t ion fo r speak ing .

The speaking itinerary fo r Gene an d

L en ora D ulin is practically full fo r

this spr ing. They will be in Europe

from June through mid-November. A

THE WORK OF GENE DULIN, DIRECTOR OF T.C.M.

The rapidly expanding ministry of

Toronto Chri s t i an Mis si on b ro ad en s

th e fie ld o f serv ice fo r a l l assoc i a t ed

with the Miss ion . P l a n s fo r t h e Ch r i s t ian

Service Center and Hospital i ty House

in Europe (probably Vienna, Aust ri a)

are requiring much of the director's

attention, as are all of the new act ivit ies in Europe. This does not m ean,

however, tha t Gene a nd L en ora Dulin

are moving t o Eur op e.

Gene s e rv es a s the d i r e c to r o f th e

Mission and g ives coun se l and ass is t

anc e to th e miss iona r i e s in t he v a ri ou s

ministries of t he Mis si on . One phase of

the work may require more a tt en tion of

B ro. Duli n in its beginn ing than later

when it is funct ion ing smooth ly. For

example th e ministry with youth con

sumed practically all of Bro. Dulin 's

time during the construct ion of th e

Christian Service Camp and firs t year

of camp. Now he devotes practically

no t ime to th is a rea of endeavor . When

th e pr in t ing minist ry was started, Bro.

Dulin operat ed th e press and did much

of th e other work in vo lv ed , b ut to da y

he has little to do with the mechanics

of print ing. During these days as th e

Europeanwork is developing, he is giv

ing much attention to this ministry,

but once this ministry has devel oped

he p robabl y will be devoting attention

to some othe r pro jec t of Toronto Chris

t i an Miss ion .

The time involved and t he n ee de d

field work makes i t w i se fo r the D ulins

to be in Europe several months this

year, and probably again in 1971. They

will be going with th e June missionary

tour group and remain in Europe until

November, during which time plans call

fo r them to travel into Czechoslovak ia ,

Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Yugo

slavia. where many opportunities to

witness fo r C hris t are ex pe cte d. T he y

will also do preparatory work toward

th e es tab l ishment of th e Chris tian

Ser vic e C en te r. During this time in

Europe they will be using th e camper

as their home. Rather than pay high

apartment ren t or storage charges i n

Toron to , they are selling all their furni

ture. On returning to Canada a nd th e

s ta tes in November, they w ill b e visit

ing churches and again would not findit economically wise to have a n a pa rt

ment. This type of schedule will last

at least two years, after which time

the Dulins will probably rent an apart

ment to ca l l "home " .

This approach to meet ing the imme

d ia te n eeds in Europe is made possi

b le b ec au se th e Dulin's two daughters

will both be in college in America. Un

t il this t ime, famil y responsibilities

would have made it impossible.

As the European phase of the work

is developed, Dewey Thackston will

se rve a s th e D irecto r of European

Ministries. We an ti ci pa te s e ve r al mis

sionaries working together to c ar ry th e

message of Chr is t into Eastern an d

Western Europe as God opens doors.

Bro. Th ac k st on w il l s pe nd three months

in E urope this summer orienting himse l f while he part icipates in our "Youth

to Youth" ministry in Europe. Once

this ministry in Europe develops into

th e effec t ive ins t rument fo r Chr i s t we

visual ize, th e Dulins will be able to

give more attention to o th er phases of

th e work .

S IXTEEN DAYS

IN AUGUST

John and Florence Hedrick on left with Christians in Hungary.

The dramatic spiritual impact of amissionary tour in certain countries

of the world is written indelibly uponou r hearts! The providential hand ofGod ha s been evidenced during these

thrilling sixteen days of August. Wehave discovered anew the meaning ofon e of our most oft-repeated phrases:

"God opens doors!" We rejoice to report that there is indeed Chris t ian faith

i n unexpec ted p la ce s! We saw it in the

po ignant p l ead ing of a Chris tian woman

who sa id, "P l e a s e . . .come an d have a

service at my home tonight." We sawcourageous fai th in the eyes of a girl

from a satellite country who told ushow difficult i t was to ma in ta in f ai th

in Christ in an atmosphere of atheistichostil i ty. We w it ne ss ed fa it h in th e

r a d i a n t countenance of a Christian

couple with whom we worshipped intheir home. We observed a genuine

steadfastness in th e c on tin ua l la bo rs

of a brother in Christ who had been

converted from Judaism more than thi rtyyears ago. We experienced the joy of

fellowship with a young Christian

couplean d

clearlywitnessed how

theirChrist ian love fo r o ne another had been

further sanctified by God's gift of aprecious baby girl!

We gathered around th e Table of th e

Lord in a little assembly of Christiansin Vienna. There we drank from th e

common cup representing th e sacrificial

b l o o d of our Lord J e s u s Chr is t . We

shared in communion with Chris t as

we "broke bread together!" Our hearts

w ent o ut to th e bro ther in Chri s t who

faced the challenging task of protect

ing the doctr inal puri ty of Christians,an d st i l l withstanding th e immense

pressures of an unfriendly government.

Wewho live in free America or an y freecountry can never fathom th e indescrib

a bl e p re ss ur es faced by these valiant

Christians every day. It is all to o easy

fo r us to say how we would conduct

ourse lves in a capt ive c ou nt ry . B ut i t

is obv ious that we could no t know unt i l

we had the experience ourselves. May

God del iv er u s from th e tragedy of life

under a police sta te .

In Vienna we r enewed happy fellow

ship with Gene an d Le n or a Dulin,Dewey Thackston, and the Bible college

youth who wer e w ith him. We travelled

with th e Dul ins , and we thri l l to their

dedication to God an d t he spreading of

His Word. The ir Ch ri st ia n surrender is

most appreciated by those who know

them best . It was refreshing to see

Dewey aga in ! How qualif ied he is fo r

th e immense t ask he had this summer

of "shepherding" a group o f fin e Bible

college students. Dewey has sufficient

familiarity with a multilingual situation

so he co uld safely guide th e studentsthrough th e maze of t rave l regula t ions ,etc. And if Nancy Clark, Cheryl Haun,

and Jim Poll ar e typical o f t he students

Dewey t ravel led with, then we regret

not mee ti ng th e rest of th e group! We

felt th e students enjoyed th e summer's

fellowship with "Dad" Thackston! But

The governments of Eastern Euro

Radio Trans Europa on the Air!

Radio Trans Europa, located in

L is bo n, P or tu ga l, is th e newest andl a t e s t ove r s eas shor t -wave s ta t ion to

broadcast Toronto Christian Miss ion 's

Russian- language program. "The Ever

las t ing Gospe l . "

In alet ter writ ten October 16 , 1970,

we were informed tha t a n e le ctr ic al

power shortage had caused a delay in

gett ing th e transmitter on the air thatwill carry religious programming. Two

t ransmi t t ers used fo r commerc ia l broad

c a s t s have been on th e a ir s i n ce l a s t

summer . T he c or re sp on de nc e r ec ei ve d

told us that the s tat ion manager indi

cated i t would be another six to eightweeks (from th e above date) before an

ample power supply would be available

fo r th e third transmitter. That time pe

riod has now elapsed, and we ar e ass um i ng t ha t broadcasting of t he Gos pe l

is underway in Lisbon.

With a total power output of 250,000

watts , this new European s tat ion is

fully capable of beaming the messageo f Chri s t into th e Sate l l i t e Coun t r i e s

and eastern Russia . The manner by

which t h es e f a c i li t ie s became avai l ab le

to Toronto Chri s t i an Mission i s s t i l l

another example of how GOD OPENS

D O O RS!

Early in 1970 Charles Br a num ,

D ir ec to r o f Radio Operations, noticed

on the back of a r ec or d a lb um , th e name

of a rel igious broadcasting group lo

cated in Stockholm, Sweden . Directing

a letter to them , he asked about r ad iot ime avai l ab i l i t i es in Scand an av i a. T h e

reply from this organization, called In

ternational Rel ig ious Broadcas t ing As

sociation, to ld of t he con st ru c ti o n o f a

new radio s tat ion i n P or tu ga l. F ur th er

more, th e l et te r s ta ted they were to be

responsible fo r all gospel programming

on t h is s ta t ion : Radio Trans Europa.From this b e g i n n i n g , and after

months o f co rr e spondence , a contract

was signed for a thirty-minute broad

cast , on a one-t ime-per-week basis .

When IRBA informed us that they want

ed th ir ty-minute segments for the Rus

sian a ud ie nc e, t hi s involved devising

a di f fe ren t format than th e one used on

th e programs aired from Manila, P. I.

Additionally, there was the co s t

factor—more than we were capable of

assuming. How this matter wa s resolved

is . in i tself , another c le a r- cut i n st ance

of th e Lord 's opening a door of spir i tual

o pp or tu nity . F or o bv io us ethical re asons , we will no t d iv ul ge t he sat is fac-

tojy agreement reached enabling us to

sign a year 's contract—but, it was at as izeab le r ed uc ti on in c os t!

This broadcast from Portugal, to

gether wit h t he t hr ee f if te en -m inut e pro

grams from Manila, means T o r o n t o

Christian Mission i s beaming ONE HOUR

AND F I F T E E N M I N U T E S O F T H E

G O SP EL in to the Sov i e t Union and i t s

Sa t e l l i t e s e a ch week!

Man-made walls and " cu r t a i n s "

are no t soundproof! Jamming devicesar e being used—and quite effectivelyin most cases -but not in all. Pravda,th e off ic ia l newspape r o f th e Sovie t

Union, complains that foreign s tat ions

"pour oceans of radio wav es ov er t heSoviet people with sermons and religious

services ." Apparently th e Russian pop

ulace i s l i s ten ing to rel igious broad

casts to such an extent it is virtually

impossible to control them all.

To underwrite a broadcasting pro

ject o f t hi s scope (one h our and fifteenm in ut es p er week) , however , requires a

sizeable outlay of funds. S t a t i n g i t

very simply and clearly, a minimum of

$180 per week is needed at this time

fo r th e c o s t of a ir t ime a lo n e. P ro du c

tion and mailing cos ts ar e additional.

I nd iv id u al s, B i bl e school classes ,

youth groups, miss ion committees , and

churches are a s k e d to cons ider th e

challenge found on the i ns id e pages of

th is i ssue, and to make a f inancial com

mitment, now! And, by all means , pray--

that ou r programs may b e used to th e

glory of God!

The plea most commonly voiced,

whether by letter or word brought out

by visitors behind t he i ro n curtain is:"Please do not discontinue your G os

p el b ro adc as ts ! They mean more to us

than yo u w il l e ve r k now! "

Truly, radio is t he o nl y means thou

sand s have of hear ing th e ever las t ing

gospel. We cannot—we dare no t fa il them!
