Toronto Ethereum UpdatePaul Paschos

Toronto Ethereum Meetup December 3rd, 2014

WHAT IF… applications were modular?

… anyone could bootstrap a business and issue shares? … the unbanked could have access to credit?

… access to financial instruments was universal? … anyone could create their own currency?

… computer programs could employ humans? … the internet of things could self-heal? … the internet became secure again?

Ethereum Launch Spring 2015

Overview• What is Decentralization?

• What is Ethereum?

• Project Update

• Mist Browser

• Ethereum DEVCON 0

• Why Build DAPPS on Ethereum

• How to get Involved

What is Decentralization?

• Decentralization is the process of redistributing or dispersing functions, powers, people or things away from a central location or authority.

• Decentralization enables disintermediation (it cuts out the middleman)

• Decentralization eliminates inefficiencies inherent to centralized institutions

What is Ethereum?• Ethereum is a technology platform for decentralization

• Ethereum enables the creation of decentralized apps or “dapps”

• Scope: Apps run on the whole of the Internet

• Combines blockchain technology + smart contracts (self-executing, self-enforcing agreements)

• Ethereum blockchain enables automated consensus between parties of a contract

• Decentralization on a large scale

• Creation of The Decentralized Web (“Web 3”, “The web without servers”)

–Stephan Tual, Ethereum Communications

“By democratizing access to programmable blockchain technology, Ethereum empowers software developers and

entrepreneurs to make a major impact on not only the decentralization of the economy, but also social structures, voting

mechanisms and so much more”

Project Update• The first contracts in Solidity are now running on the testNET

• Solidity is a unifying contract scripting language that simplifies smart contract creation

• PoC-7 has been released; PoC-8 to be released shortly

• PoC-7 features provisions for creating light client DAPP Nodes

• Light clients enable massive use of Dapps for all sizes of devices, including mobile

• PoC-8 includes support for Javascript API and tools for Javascript Dapp developers

• PoC-8 is the final PoC released; protocol is then locked down and finalized

DEVCON 0• DEVCON 0 is Ethereum’s first developer conference

• November 24th - 28th

• Opportunity for Ethereum developers to network and learn from each other

• Check the Ethereum YouTube channel for all conference presentations to be released over the coming weeks

• Next DEVCON: DEVCON 1 in 2015

DEVCON 0 Presentations• ÐΞV: Mission and Processes

• Languages and Documentation

• Implementation Comparison (C++, Go, Python, Node.js etc)

• Dapps and Architecture

• Robustness and The Network

• Blockchain Theory and The Future!

• Ethereum Hackathon! (8 teams)

Calling all Entrepreneurs & Developers!• Why develop on Ethereum?

• We are creating the infrastructure for an emerging digital, consensus-based economy

• Start learning to code Dapps now and be ready when Ethereum launched

• Build and test your DAPP on the Ethereum TestNET and be first to market

• If your idea is good enough, you may get funded

• With the right idea, you can change the world

How to get involved• www.ethereum.org

• Ethereum Forums

• Reddit Community r/ethereum

• IRC #ethereum and #ethereum-dev

• Join the Toronto Ethereum Meetup Group (Search “Toronto Ethereum” )
