TAIS, as part of Toshiba Group, considers corporate social responsibility and environmental stewardship as a basic policy underlying its entire business. TAIS takes particular pride in supporting its local community and in its efforts to deal with the environmental problem of e-waste. As a corporate citizen of Orange County, CA, TAIS has long served on the board of directors of the Orange County Business Council, chairing in 2010 the Economic Development Committee. TAIS has also taken seats on the boards of the Orangewood Children’s Foundation (to help abused and neglected children and at-risk families), Saddleback College Foundation (to advance environmental education), the Beall Center at UCI (to foster collaboration between technology and the arts) and South County Outreach (to help low-income individuals and families in crisis reach self-sufficiency). Since its start over a decade ago, TAIS has been a key partner in the Toshiba Golf Classic. In 2010, the tournament raised a million dollars for Hoag Hospital, promoted recycling and provided scholarships to local high-school students. TAIS sponsors numerous events for employee participation, from blood drives to activi- ties with local non-profit organizations. We encourage and support our employees to volunteer in the community, such as cleaning our beaches on Earth Day or volunteering to answer phones at the MDA Telethon on Labor Day. Sustainability is about creating shared value with others and the earth. >>> sustainability highlightsEmployee “Day of Service” in Irvine, CA TAIS continued with offering a “day of service” to employees in celebration of Earth Day. In this second annual event, TAIS and TABS coordinated volunteer events during Earth Week for their employees to participate in a day of service. TAIS in San Jose, CA worked with the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy for an event on April 19, and TAIS in Irvine, CA partnered with TABS for two events—the Ocean Institute Beach Clean-Up on April 20 and the Irvine Ranch Conservancy Native Plant Restoration Farm on April 21.

>>> looking forwardThe year ahead calls on TAIS to respond to even more community and environmental matters. The slow economic recovery continues to strain on our local educational, healthcare and community support infrastructure, and electronic products continue to enter the waste stream at a growing rate. In response, TAIS plans to create a computer resource lab in one of the most economically depressed parts of Orange County, creat-ing a unique school/library/community center that could be utilized by everyone in the area. TAIS will also support the Consumer Electronics Association’s Billion Pound Chal-lenge, which aims to increase the industry recycling weight from 300 million pounds per year to a billion pounds annually over the next 5 years.
