1. General description

a. Product description

The TotalSeal MS ™ system is a highly effective, bentonite based, basement

tanking (vertical and horizontal foundation surfaces) waterproofing membrane

system. The membrane is comprised of a geosynthetic clay liner composite

made from high quality polypropylene geotextiles and premium grade sodium

bentonite granules. As part of the system approach the ancillary products;

SwellSeal seaming paste and Detail paste, used with the membrane are also

sodium bentonite based.

TotalSeal MS ™ uses the high swelling and self-sealing properties of Sodium

Bentonite to form a monolithic, low permeability membrane to protect the

structure from water.

Installation is fast and easy, requiring no primers or special tools.

TotalSeal MS ™ can be installed in virtually any weather, including freezing

temperatures and damp conditions.

b. Purpose / Use

Designed for use in below grade / below water table vertical and structural

foundation surfaces. Applications may include structures under continuous or

intermittent hydrostatic pressure. A strong mechanical bond is formed when

concrete is poured against the membrane as the membrane fibres “lock” into

the wet concrete. Upon hydration and when confined under pressure the

sodium bentonite granules swell forming a dense, impervious waterproofing

membrane.

Typical applications include backfilled concrete walls, under structural slabs,

tunnels, earth-covered roofs, and property line construction. Property line

construction applications include metal sheet piling, soldier pile and lagging, and

concrete caisson construction. TotalSeal MS ™ can be installed directly over a

properly prepared soil substrate without a working mud slab. Additionally,

Page 6: TotalSeal MS ™ System BUILDING PRODUCT TECHNICAL ...€¦ · an expansion joint cover over properly installed expansion joint material placed during substrate preparation. To use

Neoferma Australia Pty Ltd BPT&IM V4 June 2018

TotalSeal MS ™ can be installed on freshly poured concrete walls as soon as the

forms are removed.

Use of TotalSeal MS ™ in areas not specified in the TotalSeal MS ™ Technical

manual (BPTIM Doc V4, issued date: June 2018) are outside the scope of this

certificate.

2. Scope of Use & Limitations

a. Scope of Use

The TotalSeal MS ™ waterproofing system is designed and engineered for use

under reinforced structural concrete slabs of 150mm thick or greater and where

the substrate has been compacted to 85% modified proctor density.

For external waterproof tanking membrane to in-situ concrete, precast

concrete and concrete masonry basement constructions subject to hydrostatic

pressures of up to 2 bar (20 metres); and a damp-proof membrane (DPM) to

slab-on-ground and basement constructions.

b. Limitations

The effectiveness of TotalSeal MS ™ is dependent upon the membrane being

both compacted and confined.

TotalSeal MS ™ is not designed for un-confined, above ground waterproofing

applications or over lightweight insulating concrete or “Besser” type blocks.

TotalSeal MS ™ is not designed for being fully immersed in excessively ponding

water before the geotextile membrane is covered with concrete.

TotalSeal MS ™ is not an expansion joint filler or sealant.

For warranty requirements a manufacturer’s representative should approve

the wall surface(s) prior to installing TotalSeal MS ™.

5. Construction Details and Drawings

For examples of generic Detail drawings please refer to Appendix C.

a. General Installation Requirements

• Ensure the substrate meets the minimum 85% modified proctor density.

• Install the membrane with the woven side (dark grey) of the geotextile liner facing

the concrete to be waterproofed, in both horizontal and vertical applications.

• Prevent bentonite waterproofing products from being fully immersed in excessively

ponding water before the geotextile membrane is covered with concrete.

• Diagrammatic example of the membrane lapping:

Page 9: TotalSeal MS ™ System BUILDING PRODUCT TECHNICAL ...€¦ · an expansion joint cover over properly installed expansion joint material placed during substrate preparation. To use

Neoferma Australia Pty Ltd BPT&IM V4 June 2018

b. Substrate and Backfill Requirements:

• Backfill and substrate must be compacted to a minimum 85% Modified Proctor density.

• Substrate materials should be; mud slab, concrete, compacted sand, earth, crushed rock (no larger than 15mm in size.), blue metal or gravel.

• Materials and methodology to be approved in writing by Neoferma Australia prior to commencement.

• Backfill and surfaces should be level, without sharp objects or indentations have a smooth finish, free of debris, oil, grease, laitance, dirt, dust, or other foreign matter which will impair the performance of the waterproofing and drainage system and which do not comply with manufacturer's warranty requirements. TotalSeal MS™ can be installed on green structural concrete as soon as the forms are removed. There is no product limitation regarding a minimum concrete curing time requirement for TotalSeal MS™ to be installed over structural concrete. The Manufacturer recommends obtaining instructions from the project structural engineer regarding any site specific concrete curing time requirement. Do not apply TotalSeal MS™ waterproofing over lightweight insulating concrete or “Besser” type blocks.

• Horizontal deck or roof concrete surfaces should be sloped for proper drainage.

• Remove fins, ridges, and other protrusions to provide a level, smooth finish to match monolithic concrete surface. Completely fill honeycomb, aggregate pockets, holes or other voids with proprietary non-shrink cementitious repair mortar, levelled and smoothly finished to match monolithic concrete surface.

• Closely coordinate TotalSeal MS™ installation with the Backfill operation conducted under Division 2 work. Care should be used during Backfill operation to avoid damage to the waterproofing system. Follow generally accepted practices for backfilling and compaction. Backfill should be added in 150 - 300 mm lifts and compacted to a minimum 85% Modified Proctor density. At grade line and other areas that cannot be fully compacted.

• FLASHING is recommended across the top termination of the membrane.

• Failure to provide substrates to specification will void warranty.

Limitation: Ref Expansion Joints

TotalSeal MS™ waterproofing is not an expansion joint filler or sealant but may be used as

an expansion joint cover over properly installed expansion joint material placed during

substrate preparation.

To use TotalSeal MS™ as a cover for an expansion joint:

• All expansion joints should be cleaned, primed, fitted with the relevant expansion joint product – refer to Expansion joint material manufacturer for details.

• Install a 500 mm wide strip of TotalSeal MS™ centred over the expansion joint. Then place the main course of TotalSeal MS™.

• If movement is expected contact Neoferma for recommendation(s).
