TOUCHMARK AT MEADOW LAKE VILLAGE THE{FULL} LIFE April 2014 Breakfast in Ireland may include Black Pudding (otherwise known as blood sausage), bacon, fried eggs, and oven wheaten bread to sop up the drippings. Ireland native and now Touchmark resident, Jim McWha often enjoyed such a hearty breakfast. Jim was born and raised on a family farm near the coastal town of Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, just 20 miles southeast of Belfast. This kind of breakfast was enough to sustain Jim and his four siblings until suppertime, while they worked the farm and tended to all the animals, including milking cows, beef cattle, chickens, pigs, and sheep. From Irish farm to aeronautical engineer Leisure time Beyond farm life, Jim played rugby during his school years and later for an adult team that traveled over much of Northern Ireland. After a game, he and his mates would gather at the local dance hall hopefully to meet some girls. The rugby teams also enjoyed post game celebrations at the local pubs. This is where Jim acquired a taste for Guinness, the famous Irish stout. His hometown pub, Grace Neill’s is touted as the oldest in Ireland, built in 1611 and still pouring pints today. Setting sail on a career in the U.S. Jim attended Queen’s University in Belfast and graduated with an Engineering degree in 1962. His first job was with Short Brothers, the first airplane manufacturing company in the world. The sixties were notable for the race-to-space programs, and aeronautical engineers were in short supply in the US. Boeing responded by recruiting abroad and made a stop in Belfast. After visiting with the recruiters, Jim accepted their offer and in 1966 set sail for the US on the Queen Elizabeth. The first Boeing program for Jim was the 747. He was assigned to the automatic flight controls group along with about 20 other engineers. Their major task was to develop a system capable of landing automatically in very low- visibility weather conditions. The psychosocial and mental health benefits have been studied for several years in regard to reduced risk factors for depression, loneliness, and isolation. A newer focus is the physical health benefits. In 2013, Carnegie Mellon University researchers looked specifically at the relationship between volunteerism and lower blood pressure. After a game, he and his mates would gather at the local dance hall hopefully to meet some girls. The rugby teams also enjoyed post game celebrations at the local pubs. Jim continued his career in commercial airplanes with the development and certification of the 757, 767, 737NG, and 777 airplanes. The latter was his most challenging and satisfying of all his assignments. He was selected as Chief Engineer for Flight Systems. Reflecting on his career, Jim describes it as a “magical” period in aviation with the huge growth in demand for air travel and the introduction of new

technologies to improve safety and efficiency.

“When I first started at Boeing, 15 of the 20 engineers in my group were from overseas with not more than two from the same country,” remembers Jim. He quickly befriended many of the British engineers, and it was then that he started to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Over the years, Jim and his wife Barb have used St. Patrick’s Day as a good excuse for a party to enjoy Irish coffee, sausage rolls, and maybe a few pints with friends. Dinner, of course, includes corned beef and cabbage, together with potatoes (common to both Ireland and Idaho).

Since moving to Idaho in May last year, Jim and Barb have been living the Touchmark {FULL} Life. They participate in various classes and are particularly thankful for the many trips offered around the area. “Getting to know a new community and where to go can

be challenging. We love the field trips and activities that help us get out and experience Boise,” says Barb.

The community life of Touchmark has enabled Jim and Barb to make new friends quickly. They enjoyed sharing Jim’s heritage and storytelling at the Irish beer-tasting event just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

Here are two of Jim’s favorite Irish sayings:

An Irish BlessingMay you have:

No Frost on your Spuds. No Worms on your Cabbage.

May your Goat give Plenty of Milk.If you inherit a Donkey, may she

be in foal.

An Irish SituationThere comes a time when you

must take the Bull by the tail andface the situation squarely.

Chautauqua Week celebrates lifelong learning In honor of the adult education movement of the early 1900s, Touchmark hosted an entertainer or educator every evening during a week celebration. The presentations featured period music to fun in-character presenters. Below: Jim Sample and Bob Law, the JB Duo, wrap up the week with a fun percussion and piano music presentation.
