Touchmark announces contractor, start of constructionTouchmark has named Berghammer Construction Corporation of Butler, Wis., as contractor for its $9.8 million expansion and remodeling project. Rick Wessell, senior vice president and director of construction for Touchmark Development & Construction, will oversee the expansion, which is now under way.
A $7.2 million one-story addition will add 31,390 square feet and offer support for people living with Alzheimer’s disease or other age-related dementia as well as those needing enhanced assisted living care. In addition, the existing community will undergo an extensive $2.6 million renovation.
The project, which is set to be finished in summer 2014, is expected to provide work for approximately 150 people during construction as well as add close to 35 positions once completed.
“We’re excited to have the expansion and renovation under way,” says Executive Director Barb Pandolfo. “Once completed, our expanded services will benefit the growing number of seniors and families looking for a community that offers a full range of lifestyle and service options.”
Touchmark’s new building will include 46 private rooms with full bathrooms and two double-occupancy residences. They will be divided among three neighborhoods, providing a warm, comfortable setting in an open-plan environment that includes electric fireplaces, bookcases, carefully selected artwork, and other touches that evoke the familiarity of home. Two neighborhoods will offer memory care services; the third will support people requiring a higher level of assisted living than is currently offered.
Each neighborhood will have its own kitchen, living room, and areas for dining, activities, music, and art. A beauty salon/barber shop, spa baths, and family meeting room will be shared by the three neighborhoods, and there will be secure outdoor courtyards.
Architects are LRS Architects and Joseph Billig, AIA, director and vice president of Touchmark Development and Construction. The design for memory care services draws on the latest research for providing a comfortable and secure environment for people experiencing memory loss.
For the renovation project, all paint, furnishings, carpeting, and flooring in common areas will be updated within the existing community.
Additionally, there will be lighting enhancements. The new “transitional” finishes will feature warm earth and Tuscan colors. Other changes include remodeling the dining rooms, multipurpose room, main reception area, library, and the bank/store. A café-style bistro will be a new feature of the full-service community.

As part of our Active Aging Week activities, the Honorable Timothy Hanna, Appleton’s mayor, visited and talked about Appleton’s history as well as discussed current city events and issues.
For a gals’ day out, some of the ladies viewed the fashions of Hollywood icon Katharine Hepburn at the Trout Museum of Art. The exhibit is in Appleton until Dec. 15 and features clothes from her career as well as personal life.

Rachel Watkins-Petersen takes on role of Life Enrichment/Wellness directorRachel’s passion lies in challenging and stimulating residents to succeed in things they’ve never tried before.
“Touchmark’s {FULL} Life is not about lumping residents together and assuming their likes and interests are all cookie cutter. Each person moves here with a unique story, individual past experiences, and diverse interests. The objective of The {FULL} Life program is honoring residents as individuals and assuring they continue to lead stimulating and exciting lives.”
Rachel is a native of the Chicagoland area. She graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2004 with a Bachelors of Arts in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Spanish. Rachel began her career enriching the lives of children as a teacher. When she became a mother, she stayed home and owned and operated an in-home daycare. When it came time to working outside of the home again, she jumped at the opportunity
to enrich the lives of retired people. Rachel joined the team as the Life Enrichment/Wellness assistant and recently took on the director’s role.
Rachel lives in Appleton with her husband Matt, daughter Layna, and German Shepherd Oak. She enjoys photography, traveling with her family, hiking in the northern forests, and spending time on Lake Superior.

Last month, this column focused on the happiness research, which is a bit startling and constantly changing. This month, the focus is on what works to make people feel empowered, engaged, and free from as many health/mental/environmental constraints as possible.
Aging brings its own complications—less muscle, reduced energy quotient, elevated (or lowered) blood
pressure, financial worries about resources to care for one self and/or spouse for as long as needed, loss of friends and family. The data, though, show that many people are living long and well—even into their 100s. How can that be?
Interestingly, the simple answer is “thankfulness.” We focus a lot on the word thankful during this season. One can be thankful in private, but that is only part of the formula for a good quality of life. Thankfulness accelerated by good works and generosity is the key component to the wellness prescription.
Even individuals who are physically impaired or cognitively challenged set themselves apart by being part of the solution to the unmet needs of others. The expanded vision of others and good works can empower
people who cannot volunteer in traditional ways.
Touchmark believes in philanthropy. The Touchmark Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity formed by Touchmark in 2002. Its mission is “to enhance the well-being of seniors.” The foundation is dedicated to providing programs to help ensure that seniors have what is necessary to make their lives comfortable, satisfying, and engaging. At this time of year, food boxes are given out at each Touchmark community to help families in need.
