Capital of the Celtic people called the Mediomatrici, it had in the Gallo-Roman times more inhabitants than Lutetia. The jewel of the city was a 25,000 seats amphitheatre, one of the greatest of the Roman Empire. Today, at this location stands the Centre Pompidou-Metz, dedicated to modern art and close to which the Tour de France will finish stage 6. Opened in 2010, this architecturally innovative museum that helps make Metz a Mecca of European culture has already welcomed over one million visitors, which places it as one of the top museums in the province. Metz is also a fusion of different architectures, Medieval, Gothic, 17 th century French style or the neo-Roman Imperial District, which led the municipality to apply for the classification of the city as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. It is also a green city with its many parks and gardens and has developed many cycle lanes. Between vineyards and forests, bordered by the Marne, the city boasts a high quality of life in a beautiful natural environment. Its rich heritage is comprised of monuments like the Tour De Castellane, the Portal St. Martin or the Gabrielle Dorziat theatre but also unique hotels in Renaissance or classical style, many dating from the nineteenth century. These beautiful buildings that are often the major champagne houses are found for the most part, on the stately Avenue de Champagne. La Planche des Belles Filles in Summer

TomblaineFirst time stage-town - 8,000 inhabitants (Tomblainois) Tomblaine makes up with nineteen other municipalities the Urban Community of Greater Nancy and is in the inner suburbs of the capital of Lorraine from which it is separated by the Meurthe river. As part of an ambitious urban renewal project, is a growing town, a city that also takes care of its environment as reected in the ranking given to seventeen hectares in the heart of city on the le de Foulon and the le de lEncensoir as a Sensitive Natural Area. Tomblaine which also has one person in three aged under 19 years therefore a very young population also focuses on providing its people with important infrastructures such as Grand Nancy Airport or large sports facilities such as the Raymond-Petit athletics stadium or the Marcel-Picot Stadium, home to the football team AS Nancy-Lorraine. Finally, on a cultural level, Tomblaine has staged for twenty years now les Rencontres Thtrales of the association Aux Actes Citoyens. Culture, youth, environment and sports are intertwined in Tomblaines development project. www.tomblaine.fr

La Planche des Belles FillesFirst time stage town - Winter sports resort 1,100 inhabitants (Mainous at Plancher-les-Mines) Located in the Regional Nature Park of Ballons des Vosges, La Planche des Belles Filles is a family resort which is the only snow park in the Haute-Sone. Recently improved to ensure its long-term development, the stadium is equipped with 5 ski slopes, 50 kilometres of cross-country skiing, a snowshoeing circuit, a track rollherbe and hiking and equestrian trails. According to legend, in 1636, the young and beautiful girls of the village sought refuge in the mountains, near a pond, to escape the Swedish soldiers who had come to plunder the village. When discovered, they threw themselves into the black waters. The head of the assailants, who had fallen for the charms of one of the girls, dived in to save her but up brought up only a lifeless body. He took a plank of wood and with his dagger engraved an epitaph in honour of those unfortunate girls, and thus gave the name to the site of La Planche des Belles Filles. Below, a few kilometres in the old working valley, the town of Plancher-les-Mines was named after the lead, iron and silver mines for which it was once renowned. www.cg70.fr www.stationdelaplanche.fr

The Castle

Belfort29 times stage-town - 51,500 inhabitants (Belfortains) Belfort benets from a remarkable situation. Bordering Switzerland, it reafrms, with the arrival of the TGV and access to the EuroAirport, its traditional role as an exchange point between the valleys of the Rhone and the Rhine, between Mediterranean Europe and the Rhineland. The city of the Lion, the famous sculpture by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and the emblem of the city also boasts a dual heritage, historical and industrial. The citadel built by Vauban is one of the most beautiful heritage sites in French, while the presence of many industrial rms such as General Electric, Alstom, research laboratories on the fuel cell and hydrogen technology conrms the dynamism of a technological and innovative city. Belfort also enjoys artistic diversity and a richness in its festivals: the Eurockennes rock festival, the International Festival of University Music, EntreVues, the International Film Festival and the Puppet Festival. The beauty of the architecture and elegance of the facades, the charm of parks and public gardens mean that Belfort is a colourful and harmonious town where life is good. www.ville-belfort.fr

PorrentruyFirst time stage-town - 6,700 inhabitants (Bruntrutains) Welcome to Porrentruy, the Swiss city nearest to Paris! Since the opening of the new TGV station Belfort-Montbliard, a few kilometres from the Swiss border, Porrentruy is only 2 hours 40 minutes from the French capital. This happy fact reinforces the appeal of the city and the Swiss canton of Jura as a tourist destination and location of the rst rate place to be for people and businesses. The Swiss canton of Jura, made of wide open spaces and unspoiled nature, is horse country, the cradle of the watch and of the famous Swiss Army knife. Second city of the Canton, Porrentruy, located in the heart of a region called the Ajoie, has a rich architectural heritage, one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Switzerland and ongoing traditions like the Festival of Saint Martin, that every year in November, welcomes tens of thousands of visitors. During construction of the A16 motorway, deposits of dinosaur traces were discovered close to the city dating from the Jurassic period -150 million years ago - which makes Porrentruy one of the most important sites in the world. www.porrentruy.ch www.juratourisme.ch
