The new $32 million Saffire at Freycinet offers 20 luxury suites in a unique coastal sanctuary and a level of luxury and service for the discerning traveller that has never been available before in Tasmania. The project marks a significant triumph for Tasmanian tourism and is set to bring major economic benefits to the state.

At the official launch, held on 4 August, Federal Group Managing Director, Mr Greg Farrell, described the Saffire at Freycinet as ‘Tasmania’s brightest jewel’. “The property is a ‘lighthouse development’, not only for the company, but for Tasmania and Australia that is uniquely positioned as an inspirational coastal sanctuary offering the discerning guest sophisticated luxury. essence of this unique region and connecting with its environment to provide a truly authentic and enriching experience for guests,” he said.

From the outset, the Federal Group set about creating a unique and sophisticated destination of the highest quality that features the very best that Tasmania has to offer. The project has been a significant undertaking by the company, involving years of market research and strategic planning to ensure that the finished product accurately meets and, in most cases exceeds, market expectations. Saffire offers a world-class day spa and gym, superior lounge, premium meeting facilities, and serves the finest fresh produce and best local wines in the fine dining restaurant.

Rooms at the resort, overlooking Coles Bay and the Hazards, start at $1,250 a night, increasing to $2,250 a night for an executive suite, which includes a private courtyard with plunge pool, complimentary mini-bar and a 120-minute spa treatment. Distinct in its design, exclusive in its features and set apart by its approach to tailored, one-on-one experiences and service, Saffire’s approach is not constrained by traditional five-star

ratings and

standards, but sets a bold new direction for holidays and accommodation in Australia.

Saffire was designed by multi-award winning Tasmanian architects, Morris-Nunn and Associates, and the project was managed by Patrick Stanton of Stanton Management Group and with a 140-strong team of trade professionals from the Fairbrother Group who battled unseasonably challenging elements over eighteen months to build the unique property. The establishment is marketed under the Federal Group’s ‘Pure Tasmania’ brand, offering a world-class experience comparable with the finest and most exotic five-star experiences anywhere in the world. The resort employs 48 staff.

Management have been very excited by the overwhelmingly positive feedback received since the Saffire welcomed its first guests in May. “There is an amazing level of interest at a local, national and international level which is driving forward-bookings,” said Mr Farrell. “The unique Saffire experience will continue to attract a growing number of discerning visitors to our beautiful island state.”

At the fourth African Cultural Festival, St David’s Park in Hobart was awash with the sights, sounds and tastes of Africa where representatives of 25 countries came together to celebrate.

The festival was opened by Ald Bill Harvey and a welcome to country was given by Jim Everett. Premier David Bartlett also attended the festival and launched the African Communities Council of Tasmania (ACCT), the state’s peak African body - providing services, advocacy and educational programs. “This festival is a wonderful opportunity for Tasmanians to celebrate the vibrant cultural diversity of our community,” said Mr Bartlett.

African countries represented in Tasmania are: Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Eriteria, Liberia, Rwanda, Somalia, Egypt, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Guinea, South Africa, Zambia, Ivory Coast, Niger, Ghana, Botswana, Nigeria and Cameroon.

The large crowd enjoyed dancing from various African countries and an arts and crafts display. Delicious Ethiopian, Somali and Congolese food was also offered for sale. Nostalgia’s not what it used to be. This whimsy will be put to the test during Targa Tasmania’s 20th anniversary celebration in 2011.

For a start, it won’t be just the past twenty years that will be celebrated. More like the previous fifty to sixty years of motor racing in Tasmania. Longford in particular, will be the cause for a massive celebration in the lead-up to the 2011 Targa.

The Longford Revival Festival on 1-3 April is a major initiative of Octagon Australia (the company that runs Targa Tasmania). The festival will be the inaugural annual celebration of Longford Motor Racing from the 1950s and ‘60s. The organisers, supported by the Northern Midlands Council and businesses, aim to create an event with broad appeal - a celebration of Longford’s international motor racing heritage.

The inaugural Longford Revival Festival will turn back the clock and take people on an evocative journey to when Brabham, McLaren, Hill, Clark and Surtees ruled the 4.5 “mile” (7.2km) Longford track. Mark Perry of Octagon said the plan is to recreate the smell, sound and rumble of past day’s historic motor racing where participants, spectators and machines can mingle safely yet close to the action. The festival will include demonstrations of legendary cars and bikes driven by famous drivers along the Flying Mile, as well as music, fashion, Tasmanian food and beverages, car and bike displays and trade stands.

An excited Northern Midlands Council Mayor, Kim Polley, said the recent announcement by Octagon Australia to host the Longford Revival Festival is spectacular news for Longford and the state of Tasmania. “The town’s proud history of motor racing is very special, and to be given the opportunity to have the event back at Longford will be a major economic boost for the local and Tasmanian economy,” she said.

Nostalgia is the doorway to connect contemporary Longford with an earlier dynamic period of its history and heritage. Closed in 1968, sections of the F1 track still remain today and the most famous section, ‘The Flying Mile’, where cars once reached 180mph (288kph) will be a feature. Many cheers and raised glasses would have accompanied the goggled stars of yesteryear as they rounded the corner pub and accelerated away with only

hay bales, exhaust fumes and dust separating the sleek racing machines from excited fans.

The Longford Revival Festival will tap into the authentic motor racing heritage of the region to re-establish Longford as a motor racing destination and, once again, attract people from all over the world to enjoy its renewed and renowned hospitality.

Eleven convict sites across Australia have been included on the World Heritage List, with five of those convict sites located in Tasmania.

They include:

• The Cascades Female Factory in Hobart - a self-contained, purpose-built institution intended to reform female convicts. The inmates did laundry and needlework services, offsetting some of the colony’s penal costs.

• The Port Arthur Historic Site - operated as a penal station for secondary offenders until 1877, and developed into a major industrial complex.

• The Coal Mines Historic Site - located on the north side of the Tasman peninsula, played an important role in the development of the colony, and held up to 500 convicts. It was regarded as a particularly severe place of punishment.

• Brickendon and Woolmers Estates - located near Longford, were private farms that utilised assigned convicts, both male and female, who worked largely in agricultural jobs and contributed to the development of Tasmania’s pastoral industry.

• Darlington Probation Station - located on Maria Island off Tasmania’s East Coast, where there are some 16 surviving sites dating in some cases to the 1820s.

World Heritage nomination is a thorough process, and involves considerable cooperation and liaison between Federal, State and Local Governments. The 11 sites are also included on the National Heritage List and are protected under national environment law.

Tourism industry leaders and stakeholders gathered in Launceston on 17 August for the launch of the new Three-Year Strategic Plan for the Tasmania’s Business Events Industry.

Business Events Tasmania Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Nettlefold, said business events travellers are the highest yielding of any tourist category and are therefore the most sought after. “There is fierce competition internationally to lure conferences and incentives, and increased federal support following this election will be most welcome so that Australia, in particular Tasmania, can successfully increase market share,” he said. “Our 2010-13 Strategic Plan seeks to secure more business events for Tasmania, increasing our share of the high yield corporate meeting and incentive (C&I) market and targeting international business events for the state.”

Mr Nettlefold said the national association conference market has always made up the bulk of business for Tasmania – well over 80%. “Although this segment will continue to dominate Tasmania’s clientele, with products like MONA, Saffire, Hadley’s new development and The Charles, Tasmania is well placed to attract the discerning high end C&I clients that have the highest economic impact per delegate,” he said. “The redevelopment of Princes Wharf Shed No 1 also broadens the scope of bidding opportunities for the association market, increasing capacity for an event in Hobart from 1,000 to over 1,200 delegates.”

Business Events Tasmania won 106 bids for business events last financial year representing 25,000 delegates and over $42million for the economy and its members.

The popularity of the ST.ART Street Art and Music Festival is increasing - with the 2010 Festival, the largest so far.

Street culture was embraced by the Rosny Barn as it hosted around 600 visitors ranging in age from primary school aged children and families, to adult artists sharing their skills with younger participants and taking

the opportunity to create works in a legal and safe environment.

The ST.ART Aerosol and Stencil Art competition and exhibition, a one-of-a-kind exhibition in Tasmania, received an enthusiastic response from Tasmanian street artists and provided a chance for both aspiring and established artists to show their work in a professional

gallery space. The competition and festival allowed young people with an interest in street art to create legal artworks and gain skills in the legitimate aspects of street art creation.

The ST.ART Festival is part of a wider Clarence City Council program, ‘Creative Connections’, which aims to redirect young people away from destructive and illegal tagging vandalism and includes:

• Aseriesofin-schoolworkshopsinT-Shirtstencillingand the creation of mini-murals on school properties around the City of Clarence;

• TheClarencevolunteergraffitiremovalteamremoving graffiti from Council facilities; and

• Thegraffitiremovalhotline

The program also provides skills development opportunities for the artists employed to conduct the workshop program.

Artist, REALS, from Sydney, visited once again to conduct live spray demonstrations and mentor young people. He worked alongside local emerging artists, Reuben Holford and Aeden Howlett. There were also BBOY demonstrations, live DJs and MCs throughout the day, T-shirt stencilling and a free BBQ.

The Aerosol and Stencil Art Competition and Exhibition was held on-site attracting a wide range of entries across three age categories. Six artists received prizes for their submitted works, namely Benjamin Lieutter - winner of the Senior Stencil Category, Reuben Holford - winner of the Senior Aerosol Category, Sam Houghton-Davies for the Intermediate Stencil Category, Byron Hewett for the Intermediate Aerosol Category, Jed Lamoreaux for Junior Stencil, and Jade Jenkins for Junior Aerosol.
