Tournament of Bands • Adjudicators • 2017 Paul D. Brizzi is a former high school band director at Ankeny High School in Ankeny, Iowa. His Ankeny bands were successful competitively in solo/ensemble contests, large group contests and marching band contests. He taught in Iowa high schools for thirty-five years. During the 2006-2007 school year he served as interim Symphonic Band and Marching Band Director at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Since 2007, Mr. Brizzi has supervised music student teachers for Drake University as well as serving as Symphonic Band Director and student teachers as well as teaching some music education classes. Paul is past-president of the Iowa Bandmasters Association and has served on the 20 member Board of Directors of the National Band Association, he is a past state chairman for the National Band Association. Mr. Brizzi was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for active teachers by the Iowa Bandmaster Association in 1999. In 2003 he was awarded the Silver Baton Award by the Kappa Kappa Psi National Band Fraternity. In 2004 he was recognized by the Sousa Foundation as a recipient of the Legion of Honor Award. In 2005 Brizzi was awarded the Music Association Outstanding Educator Award for Iowa as well Section 4 of the United States. He has been a leader in the state of Iowa in both band and professional associations and continues to serve on volunteer boards for the Iowa Bandmasters Association. Mr. Brizzi completed both his BA and MA at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA. Mr. Steve Citta is a former Director of Bands at Waterloo West High School in Waterloo, Iowa. His marching bands, jazz bands, and wind ensembles earned numerous honors and awards in the twenty years that he was at West High. In 2015 he was awarded the Philip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award by the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters. He retired last January after teaching in Iowa for 33 years. Steve is also a professional music arranger, drill writer, and works extensively throughout the Midwest as a clinician and adjudicator. He has presented marching band clinics at the Iowa Bandmasters Convention, the Iowa Music Educators Association Conference and continues to work as an arranger and visual consultant for many bands across Iowa. Mr. Citta is an adjudicator for Tri-State Judging, the Iowa High School Music Association and has judged for Heritage Festivals, as well as, the Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship. Steve completed his Bachelor’s of Music Education degree from the University of Northern Iowa and graduate hours from Illinois State University, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa.

Dr. Philip Edelman is an assistant professor of music education and ensemble director at the University of Maine School of Performing Arts, where he served as a researcher, educator, and conductor since the fall of 2016. His teaching responsibilities include courses in music education, instrumental pedagogy, and conducting. His degrees were earned from the University of Missouri- Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance (Ph.D), Kansas State University (MM), and the University of New Hampshire (BME). Prior to his appointment at the University of Maine, Edelman taught a wide variety of courses in music education methods, field experiences, and music technology as part of his doctoral fellowship at the University of Missouri- Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. While in Kansas City, Edelman served as the conductor of the Roeland Park

New Horizons Band—an ensemble dedicated to collaborative music making among adults over the age of 50. For seven years prior to his doctoral study, he was a director of instrumental music in the Goddard, Kansas school district, teaching in all areas of the instrumental music program (band, orchestra, jazz band, marching band, and chamber music). Edelman’s research areas include lifelong music learning, undergraduate music education preparation, conductor decision-making, and the music student teaching experience. His research has been presented at state, regional, national, and international music and music education conferences, and he is in-demand nationally as a clinician and adjudicator for concert bands, jazz ensembles, marching bands, and orchestras.

Dennis Kerr is in his 36th year of teaching in Kansas and Oklahoma, and is currently the Band Director in Conway Springs, Kansas. Mr. Kerr has judged extensively in the Midwest Region teaching and adjudicating Concert Bands, Marching Bands, Color Guards and Percussion units. As an instructor or adjudicator, Mr. Kerr has worked to foster a strong work ethic in students and to help them reach their goals. His understanding of pageantry activities has allowed his Bands and Color guards the opportunity to be extremely successful. Mr. Kerr’s understanding of performance arts allows him to be teacher, counselor, and critic to help each grow to their full potential. He is a graduate of the Judges Academy level 1 coursework and currently working on level 2. Mr. Kerr lives in Conway Springs, Kansas with his wife of 37 years, Ellen,

and has two adult sons. He has served as President and Contest Director for the Oklahoma Color Guard Association, as judges’ coordinator for the Mid America Performing Arts Association, and is currently the Marching Band Championship coordinator for Kansas Bandmasters Association. Mr. Kerr’s professional memberships include Kansas Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Educators, Past President of the Kansas Bandmasters Association, Judges Association of Mid America, Phi Beta Mu and life member of Kappa Kappa Psi. He holds both Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music Education from Wichita State University.

A New York City native, Darick Kelly is a music educator in the New York City Department of Education. He has taught and arranged for numerous marching bands and indoor percussion units in the NYC metro area, including Walt Whitman High School in South Huntington, NY, Port Chester High School in Port Chester, NY, Passaic High School in Passaic, NJ and has given numerous clinics including the PAS Stony Brook University Day of Percussion, PAS Connecticut Day of Percussion, and the NYC Next Wave Percussion Clinic, alongside Blue Devils Percussion Director Scott Johnson.

Darick served as the snare technician for the WGI PIW United Percussion in 2009 and 2010, and was battery coordinator and percussion caption head for The Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Mr. Kelly has also arranged musical works for the New York Knicks, New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets, NFL sponsored United Way, and designer Tory Burch.

He has also collaborated with one of Europe's premier electronic music DJs, Thomas Gold, whose set was performed in NYC and LA. Most recently, he collaborated with Capitol Records Artist Little Daylight on their album, "Hello Memory".

He began his marching career in 1997 and completed the final 2 years of his drum corps career in the snare line with The Blue Devils in 2004 and 2005. Outside of the marching activity, Darick received his BM in percussion performance from SUNY Purchase College and in 2008, he received his MA in music education from New York University, where he performed with the NYU Symphony Orchestra, and the NYU Percussion Ensemble and has performed some of the world’s greatest concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in NYC with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas. In 2007, he performed the New York Premier of Luigi Morleo's "Nessun Popolo Oppresso 10."

Darick has had the privilege to study under great teachers including Jonathan Haas, Raymond Desroches, Simon Boyar, Scott Johnson, Micah Brusse, Sean Vega, Tim Greene, and Damien Escarpeta. Darick is a proud education endorser of Vic Firth Drumsticks and Mallets, Remo Drumheads, and Zildjian Cymbals, and currently lives in New York City with his wife Keila and their daughter Elizabeth.

Keith McKeachie is currently a freelance designer, consultant, and clinician for bands based in Austin, TX. He has enjoyed many years of teaching successful programs in various capacities. When he is not working on projects with bands and colorguards, Keith works full time as a property manager and sales/leasing agent for a small real estate office in Austin, mostly involved with their property management business. Keith designed for the 2009 UIL Texas Marching Band campaign, Dripping Springs High School, as well as, many other award-winning ensembles in Texas. As a Winter Guard International designer, he has served most recently as Designer/Program Coordinator for ATX Winterguard, the 2014, 2015, and 2016 WGI Independent A Class Finalist and 2013 WGI Independent A Class

Semi-Finalist. Previously, he was involved with the 2009 WGI Independent A Class Winterguard finalist and 2011 WGI Independent Open Semi-Finalist, Identity, where he served as designer and program coordinator. He was the Guard Designer/Instructor for the 2005 and 2007 UIL Finalist Connally and Hendrickson Marching Bands in the Pflugerville ISD in Austin, TX. Both schools were

also BOA Regional Finalists as 4A schools during this period, and Connally was a BOA Grand National Semi-finalist in 2007. In addition to these programs, he has been honored to work with many other award-winning programs in his twenty plus years in the activity. Keith is an active adjudicator for the Texas Colorguard Circuit, the North Texas Colorguard Association, the Mid Continent Colorguard Association, Atlantic Indoor Association, Carolina Winter Ensemble Association, Florida Federation of Colorguard Circuit, and many other circuits around the country. He also judges across the country at various state and regional events.

Joseph Missal is celebrating his 31th year as Director of Bands and Professor of Conducting at Oklahoma State University. In this capacity, he conducts the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds and guides all aspects of the OSU Band Program. Dr. Missal also directs the graduate conducting program, teaches undergraduate conducting, and serves as Coordinator for Wind and Percussion Studies. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education from Michigan State University, a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from the University of Colorado. His ensembles have performed for conventions of the Japan Band Clinic (Hamamatsu City, Japan, 2013, 2006), British Association

of Symphonic Band and Wind Ensembles (Manchester, England, 2003), World Association for Symphonic Bands (San Luis Obispo, California, 1999, Schladming, Austria 1997), the College Band Directors National Association (National Convention, Kansas City, Missouri 2017, Austin, Texas 2009, Denton, Texas 2001, Boulder, Colorado 1995), National Band Association, the Sonneck Society, Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, the Percussive Arts Society, and the Western States Collegiate Wind Band Festival. He has received praise from composers David Maslanka, Karel Husa, Cindy McTee, David Gillingham, Joel Puckett, Paul Dooley, Steven Bryant, Scott McAllister, Michael Daugherty, Frank Ticheli, Shafer Mahoney, Kathryn Salfelder, James Kazik, Roshanne Etezady, Donald Grantham, Dan Welcher, John Mackey, Dana Wilson and others for his expressive interpretations of their music. Former conducting students now hold high school, college, and professional conducting positions throughout the United States. A member of CBDNA, WASBE, MENC, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, he has appeared as a guest conductor throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Israel. His writing has been published in the CBDNA Journal, the Canadian Band Journal, and the GIA Teaching Music through Performance in Band. Dr. Missal has served as Co-Chairman of the International Wind Band Education Committee for WASBE and is a past President of the Southwest Division of the College Band Directors National Association and the Big Twelve Band Directors Association. In 2001, he received the Wise-Diggs-Berry Award for Teaching Excellence in the Arts at Oklahoma State University and was selected as the 2002 Distinguished Music Professor. Dr. Missal has also served as a guest conductor for the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the International Trombone Association, and the United States Army Field Band. He is an elected member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association. In 2009 he was awarded the Distinguished Service to Music Medal for Concert Band from the National Council of Kappa Kappa Psi.
