Dr. Shefali Tsabary offers such an approach in The Conscious Parent. Join us Tuesdays, beginning October 7 for 4 weeks from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Room 213 as we dig deeper. THANKS! !THANK YOU TO OUR WONDERFULEPWORTH FAMILYWe have been simply overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, care and concern, food, prayers, transportation, and many more beautiful cards and kind notes that we received in the loss of our son, Jeff. DEAR EPWORTH FRIENDS,Bernie has been in the Alzheimer’s Care Unit at Kingston of Sylvania for 5 months now. As I sit by her side each day, I begin to reflect upon “the long goodbye.” I think about how difficult the journey can be. But, then I think how much easier the journey has been because of the care, love, and prayers of some wonderful friends. The “Baker Buddies” and the “Wonderful Wednesdays” group have left an indelible print in my memory. You know who you are, and I

am so grateful for your generous gift of time, which lasted over several years. I am also grateful for so many others who wished us well as we continued our journey. I don’t know where we would have been without this wonderful place called Epworth.THANK YOU, DICK BAKER

THANK YOU!A special thank you to all of our Epworth friends remembering us with prayers, well wishes, cards, food, and visits during Len’s recent hospitalization. We appreciate your continued support and prayers as we start our next journey of treatment.LEN AND CORRENE HOFER

HEALTH MINISTRIES

CARING FOR THE CAREGIVER RETURNS TO EPWORTHDid you know that 50% of family caregivers are, on average, women about 49 years old? They are caring for aging parents or other loved ones, often while still trying to work and raise a family. Stress can affect the caregiver’s immune system and can cause premature aging. Caregivers need to remain healthy and have a plan for coping with changes.

For anyone attending to the needs of a loved one – a parent, spouse, sibling, or child – consider attending Caring for the Caregiver: Finding the Blessings, a 3-session workshop sponsored by Hospice of Northwest Ohio and the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio.

Caring for the Caregiver takes place Wednesdays, September 10, 17, and 24 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in Room 213 at Epworth. The series is free and open of the public, but registration is required. Contact Nancy in the church office at 419.531.4236 or [email protected].

CPR/AED CLASS SCHEDULED FOR EARLY OCTOBEREpworth is once again partnering with Safety Plus LLC to offer a one-night, three-hour class in CPR and AED certification. If your certification has or is about to expire, or if you need to be CPR-certified for work, sign up for our class on Tuesday, October 7 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

The basic coursework covers CPR for adult and child and use of the AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) located in the Narthex. The cost of the basic class is $45. Certification in infant CPR is an additional $5. If you’re one of Epworth’s youth leaders, teachers, or ushers, if you’re a sitter or lifeguard, or if your job requires CPR certification, this class is for you.

Class size is limited, so contact Beth Irwin, Director of Health Ministries, at 419.531.4236 or [email protected] to sign up.

Wonderful Wednesday LUNCHEONS 2014

The popular Wonderful Wednesday luncheon and speaker series returns to Epworth this fall. Chef Les prepares delicious meals, and the afternoon speakers share their stories and gifts. The cost of the Wonderful Wednesday luncheon is just $7 per person. RSVP to Nancy in the church office at 419.531.4236 or [email protected]. The reservation deadlines for each luncheon are listed below.

NOVEMBER 5: At our annual Thanksgiving luncheon, Epworth member and BGSU Distinguished Teaching Professor, Ed Danziger, will share his story, “Walking on the Wild Side: Hiking from Georgia to Maine on the Appalachian Trail”. DECEMBER 3: Enjoy music and food of the Christmas season at our December event. Music is to be determined. RSVP to Nancy by Monday, December 1.

Also, mark your calendar for the 2015 Spring Wonderful Wednesday Series: March 4, April 1, and May 6. Details for the spring series will be announced in December. We welcome your friends and family at Wonderful Wednesday.

AMERICAN RED CROSS FALL BLOOD DRIVE

The next American Red Cross blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, October 29 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center. If you gave on or before Thursday, September 4, you can donate on Wednesday, October 29.

Our fall blood drive will be the Sharon Thomas Memorial Blood Drive for the American Red Cross. Sharon passed away unexpectedly in July. She attended Epworth and served on the Health Ministries Committee. When the time came to donate or volunteer for the drives, Sharon was always one of the first to sign up. The Health Ministries Committee wants to honor Sharon’s memory and servant’s heart with this memorial drive in October.

Registration information will be available soon.

BIBLE STUDIES

LOOKING FOR A DAYTIME BIBLE STUDY &DISCUSSION GROUP?

Starting Tuesday, September 16 from 9:15 to 11:00 a.m., a weekly Bible Study/Discussion class focused on growing one’s faith and living it will begin. DVD/book studies from a variety of sources will be used to deepen understanding, expand awareness, and stimulate discussion.

You’ll meet new friends - and maybe old - with openness, acceptance, and laughter. Come share in the faith journey. Since life is always in flux, fluctuating attendance is understood. You are always welcome to jump in when your calendar permits.

DO YOU KNOW HIM?Men’s Bible Study will meet Wednesdays beginning September 17 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for 6 weeks in Room 213.

Whether you’re exploring the life of Jesus for the first time or ready to take your faith to a deeper level, with this study you will spend time getting to know Jesus and His teachings about baptism, temptation, suffering, death, resurrection, and your ministry.

This video-based men’s Bible study includes in-group discussions of six videos featuring clips from the Son of God movie and commentary from Pastor Rick Warren (well-known author of The Purpose Driven Life) and at-home quiet time for prayer and scripture reading.

The only cost is $10 for the study guide. Register by contacting Ruth Ann at [email protected] or 419.531.4236. For questions, contact (personal information removed).

LISTEN: PRAYING IN A NOISY WORLDOn Thursdays, beginning October 2 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. for 6 weeks, we will discuss Bishop Rueben Job’s willingness to make a place for us where learning to listen through prayer is safe, inviting, encouraging, and supported. He assures us that learning to listen to God through prayer is a life-long experience that begins and ends with God. Psalms 33:6-9

This is a journey of prayer and study using a video and study guide, led by Tami Norris and Penny McCartney. The cost of guide is $14.99 or $9.99 for the Kindle download.

FOURTH GRADE BIBLES &

Bible ManiaOn Sunday, September 21, fourth graders will receive Bibles at the beginning of our 9:45 service. Then they will leave with their parents to attend their milestone, Bible Mania in the Family Life Center where they will learn more about their Bible and what it can say to them through games, crafts, and wacky activities.

Plan now to attend this special milestone in the faith journey of your child. Call the Education office so we can send you a letter if you did not already receive one. We want to be sure every child receives a Bible who would like one.

If you would like to be a part of this event as a helper to Epworth’s children, please call the Education office. All we ask is that you come on Sunday, September 21 from 10:00-10:50 a.m. to assist children and their parents with activities that morning.

You may sign up for any of the fall classes or bible studies listed on the cover or on pages 8 and 12 by calling the Education office or by e-mailing Ruth Ann at [email protected]. Don’t let the cost of the workbook keep you from taking a class. We have scholarship money.

EDUCATION

NURSERY & TODDLER• Childcare is available at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 in the nursery

• Sing-n-Worship at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 in Room 101 - We have moved across the hall to a larger room. Now we have plenty of space to learn and play and grow. Our toddlers learn from lessons geared to two year olds, which let them know how much we love them and how much God loves them.

PRE-SCHOOL• Play-N-Worship at 9:45 in Rooms 112 & 114 - Preschool children ages 3-5 (not yet in kindergarten) are invited to

join us. Each month the children will explore a new Bible Point through stories, songs, and play. The children will also memorize a Bible verse, learn an action prayer, and collect a Pennies for Jesus offering to buy children’s Bibles to send with our mission teams.

ELEMENTARY• Children, Grades K-5 at 9:45 in Room 205, “The Oasis” - For the month of September, we will BLAST OFF for fall as

we launch kids on a mission of God’s love. We will welcome our new kindergarten kids to the Kingdom on September 14 and begin a year of great times in the Kingdom.

• Sixth Grade S.L.A.M. at 9:45 - This summer, we will be meeting with Junior High in Room 003.

• Children, Grades K-3 at 11:00 WOW (Worship Our Way) in Room 205 - Children will go to “The Oasis” directly following the Pastor’s Children’s Moment. Each week the children will learn about God’s love through age-appropriate lessons packed with hands-on learning through praise, worship, and prayer.

• Children, Grade 4 and up at 11:00 (“B’Tween Me & God”) in Room 205, “The Oasis” - We invite kids grade 4 and up to join us in the sanctuary and worship. Sit together with a group of friends or join your family. Ask an usher for the special green “B’Tween Me & God” bulletin inserts created just for you each week. These sheets are filled with questions and insights to help engage you in worship. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers, and you don’t even need to turn these in to anyone at the end of the day because worship is B’Tween you and God!

YOUTH• Youth Donuts and the Bible at 9:45 - Junior High in Room 003; Senior High in Room 215.

ADULT• Adult Bible Study at 9:45 in Room 214 - Join us as we begin our study of Ephesians, facilitated by Wes Johnson. In this

six-week study, the DVD narrator uses humor to explain how we are adopted, accepted, empowered, and transformed from the inside out. Feel free to jump into the class discussion as we sort out the practical application of God’s plan and principles in our lives. Sip some coffee and enjoy lively conversation. Bring a friend!

• Friends in Faith at 9:45 in Room 213 - Join us for our study Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman. This is a DVD series of six 30-minute lessons of cinematic story telling. This one-of-a-kind small group study examines what it means to deny oneself and truly follow Jesus.

• Coffee and Conversation at 9:45 in Room 020 - Please join us as we discuss Faithlinks, which is how to apply our United Methodist beliefs to current faith issues and world events. Each week we will discuss a different topic.

• Bible Study at 9:45 in the Library (lower level by Central Avenue door) - We are studying Kyle Idleman’s riveting new book, Gods at War. Please join us as we learn how seekers, non-Christians, and life-long Christians alike will all be moved to grow their relationship with Christ.

• Sermon Notes at 11:00 in Room 214 - Through the summer, the class will share thoughts and discussions relating to the morning sermon. We use the scripture and pastoral message as the basis of the discussion and build in personal experiences in helping each other grow in our faith. We would like to invite those of you looking for spiritual enrichment and fellowship to stop in and give us a try. In the fall, we will start a study on the “Sermon on the Mount” (Beatitudes) and invite those interested to mark your calendars as a reminder to join us. Facilitator: Tony FaberEp
