Registration & Transfers: All animals in the auction are on the register of the British Alpaca Society (BAS), either as breeding, notified or non-breeding alpacas. The vendors will notify the BAS of the details of the new owners as soon as possible after the sale. Where the purchase price of an animal is greater than 500 guineas, the vendors will pay the transfer fees for any registered breeding alpacas. For breeding alpacas sold for 500 guineas or less, the purchaser will be required to pay an additional £25 at the time of settlement (this to cover the costs of transfer).

Town End Alpacas

Town End Alpacas is owned by Brian Raine and Kim Kearney. Brian is now retiring from breeding and so their herd is for sale by auction on 2 May 2015.

The first cria (babies) were born at Town End in 2006. Whilst developing their business, Brian and Kim have enjoyed seeing their 'Bozedown' foundation herd grow to over one hundred and twenty alpacas. Their aim has been not only to breed alpacas with excellent conformation but also to produce top quality fleece in every colour from a largely Huacaya herd. Throughout, Brian has managed the alpaca herd and Kim has focussed on producing luxury knitting yarns, handmade accessories, woven throws and scarves, etc. These are sold on the internet, yarn shops and at shows around the country. Kim will continue with this business using existing fleece stocks and purchasing fleece from other UK breeders.

Only the highest quality animals have met the requirements at Town End, and alpacas with excellent conformation and advanced fleece traits were acquired. The very best studs were used, including prize winning Australian imports from top blood lines. Alpaca selection and breeding decisions have always been taken on the use of the fleece in the manufacture of Town End's high quality yarns and accessories. Success at shows, including champion and supreme titles, have confirmed such decisions.

Always aiming for the highest standard of care, Town End has been fortunate to be supported by Dr Richard Knight of Westmorland Veterinary Group. Richard has helped Brian to define and evolve a comprehensive herd health plan, with bio-security at its core and for several years now, Town End Alpacas has been almost a 'closed herd'. An organic approach is always taken, using medicines only when there is a proven need and taking advantage of appropriate new techniques. For example, DEFRA's approval of the Enferplex test has allowed the herd to confirm its TB free status. Any animal with problems has always been removed from the breeding programme, and Town End Alpacas' breeding animals have always been sold with history and a certificate from an independent veterinary check.

The Auction

This is a complete herd dispersal and on offer are: pregnant females, females ready for mating, young females, stud males, young intact males and whethers; all in a wide range of colours. Some of the alpacas are stunning and some are just cute, and all are fit and healthy. There are a few older females but all are still capable of many years of breeding and even the briefest look at their latest babies reveals that they continue to produce quality. Breeding selections were made well before the retirement decision in October last year. Pregnancies have all been confirmed by vet’s scan and veterinary certificates will be provided for all breeding animals.

The auction will be conducted by North West Auctions at the J36 Rural Auction Mart and the terms of this catalogue will apply. This new mart, which is local to Town End, is just yards away from the M6 and provides excellent facilities including a huge car park and a very good cafe. There are also many great places to stay and/or eat nearby, with the magnificent scenery of the Lake District as a back drop.

On the morning of the dispersal prospective purchasers will have the opportunity to examine all of the alpacas and see for themselves the high level of quality on offer. Brian and Kim are immensely proud of both the quality of their animals and the yarns & accessories made from their fibre. These products are also a great testament to the high quality of their alpacas' fleeces and will be on display at the auction.

A Guide to Alpaca Care & Welfare

The Alpacas

• Alpacas are naturally herd animals and only really feel safe with their own kind; they must not be kept singly.

• Generally they are hardy healthy animals and, as with all livestock, they should be checked at least once a day, preferably twice.

• By spending time with your animals you will get to know them and it is easier to tell when they are ‘out of sorts’. The earlier problems are detected and help administered, the greater the chance of a speedy recovery.

• Alpacas usually give little indication that they are feeling unwell until they are very sick. Early indications may include loss of appetite, spending more time lying around and not keeping up with the herd. Other symptoms may include abnormal breathing and/or posture, lameness, discharge from the eyes or nose, and just generally looking depressed.

• If there is ever any doubt pertaining to the health and welfare of your animals, veterinary assistance should always be sought.

• Members of the British Camelid Veterinarian Society who are happy to advise on the treatment of alpacas can be found at the website: www.camelidvets.org

You

• Never be afraid to ask if you have any problems. You could learn something new each day about alpacas and they would still appear to have an air of mystery about them.

• If you experience any problems with newly purchased alpacas your first point of call should be with the person you bought them from.

• Don’t be afraid to question your vet and provide him with all the information you can. For example, mention the weight of a fully fleeced animal before he approaches with the hypodermic. There are many conflicting views and opinions regarding all aspects of these creatures.

• If selling animals, make sure the clients know and understand the minimum requirements involved in looking after alpacas.

• If possible, visit the new homes and ensure paddocks and field shelters are of an adequate size and that the animals are safe and looked after

Most importantly, enjoy your alpacas.

Accommodation

• Adequate grazing should be provided for the number of animals kept.

• The stocking ratio for alpacas is four to five per acre. This should be reduced if

necessary during winter or when grass is low

• Four-foot sheep fencing using stock netting is suitable for alpacas because they rarely jump and barbed wire should be removed. Post and rail and electric tape fencing can also be used, but avoid electric netting because animals can become entangled

• It is advisable, if possible, to rotate grazing, allowing land to recover. Foot rot is not common in alpacas, but if the condition is extremely wet for prolonged periods, there should be an area of drier ground provided.

• Alpacas are hardy animals and may be able to live outside all year round, providing they have some form of field shelter which they utilise. An effective shelter, large enough for all the alpacas in the field, is especially important in areas of the country that have more extreme (especially wet) weather.

• In larger fields, it is advisable to have a small enclosure of catch pen. By feeding animals here they will become accustomed to the area and it will make catching them easier for routine husbandry, training and veterinary care.

• Paddocks must be checked for toxic plants and flowers. Remember that the animals long neck allows them to reach further than others.

These guidelines are designed to promote health, happiness and general well being amongst your herd, regardless of size.

Handling

• Most handling is easier to carry out in a small area, so a designated area to catch animals is a must!

• Always handle animals with the respect they deserve; if you enter a pen in a mad rush with failing arms and bulling tactics in mind you will never win. Calm, quiet and gentle, but with an authoritative manner is the way to go.

• Alpacas can be taught quiet successfully to lead on a halter. This can be initiated with brief but frequent sessions; It takes time and patience and an understanding of your animals. A halter-trained animal can often make life easier when a vet comes to call

• Some animals become stressed, nervous or frightened when being handled and respond to this by simply lying down and refusing to move. The more they are handled, the more they will come accustomed to it.

• As a rule, alpacas will usually walk away from you. When moving the animals always walk behind them gently, guiding them to where you want them to go.

• If no catch pen is available, it is possible to catch an animal in a field with the aid of ropes, poles, or even a few friends or family walking around with outstretched arms

Breeding

• On average, gestation is 340 days, with births being best timed for the summer months.

• Young females are ready to be put to a stud male only when they have reached 60% of the weight of their mother, or are 14 months old. Following a normal birthing and complete cleaning within 12 hours of birth, a female should be in a fit condition to return to a male from 10-14 days post partum.

• It is known that some males are able to breed from about nine months of age but most males are not fertile until they are 2-3 years old.

• During copulation, the stud male intrudes through the cervix of the female and deposits sperm repeatedly into each uterine horn. This action can cause dam-age to the uterine lining and disrupt a developing pregnancy. Frequent and indiscriminate mating should be avoided.

• The selection of stud males in an important decision. The stud should be chosen to add improvements to the female such as better crimp or lower micron count because the male has a major influence on the quality of the offspring.

• Cria should be weaned at around six months of age

• It is unwise for the safety of a newly born Cria to have expectant mothers birthing in a field with deep puddles, ponds and streams.

• Hypothermia in cold or wet weather can be fatal to young and newborn Cria.

• Cria should be vaccinated at four weeks and a booster given four to six weeks later. From then, they should fall into the regular schedule of the adult herd. Worming of the Cria is normally commenced at weaning. Late born Cria can be given Vitamin A, D and E boosters in the autumn as a precaution against rickets.

Feeding

• Different groups of animals will have different nutritional requirements.

• Always ensure that there is enough grazing. If there is not, and especially in winter months, the animal should be offered hay or haylage.

• There must be a constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water.

• Heavily pregnant and lactating females and other animals also require a supplement concentrate feed during the winter months. When feeding concentrate, ensure that the food is suitable and offered in the correct quantities to meet your animals nutritional requirements.

• Feeding of sugar beet in the winter is a good source of energy.

• Don’t use haynets because the animals could get their heads caught and hang.

• Be aware that a number of plants are poisonous to alpacas and steps should be taken to ensure they are removed from paddocks.

Transport

• Alpacas can be transported in a horsebox, livestock trailer, or any other approved vehicle for the transportation of livestock, provided there is enough room for the animal to stand.

• Animals should not be tied to the trailer in any way, because they will usually sit in transit.

• Flooring to the trailer should be capable of being disinfected – ideally rubber to provide the animals with some form of grip.

• Adult males and females should travel separately and can be divided by a solid partition

• Travelling time must be monitored; Animals may only be in transit for nine hours our of each 24.

• Stops should be made to provide the animals with clean drinking water and food. This especially applies to females with young cria at foot and allows the cria time to suckle. Animals must also have the opportunity to stand and defacate.

• It is advisable in case of accident or emergency to carry with you sufficient head collars and lead ropes for each animal being transported

• Seek veterinary advice when transporting heavily pregnant females. Judgements

should take into account travelling time and distance.
