Lehigh County provides its residents and visitors with emergency community notifications in the event of emergency situations or during other situations that may warrant community notification, such as during major or prolonged weather events.. These notifications are meant to provide information that is critical to the safety and well being of the county’s residents and visitors. Who is already in the system? Persons who have “traditional” wireline telephone service, such as Verizon, Ironton, Frontier, Service Electric, Blue Ridge and RCN are already in our system, even if you have an unlisted phone number. Who should register their home or business phone in the system? Those who have landline telephone service provided by VOIP services, such as Vonage, Magic Jack, and other companies need to register their home telephone number in order to receive alerts from our system. If you are not sure whether your telephone service is VOIP, contact your telephone provider for confirmation. If I want notifications to my wireless phone (cell phone), must I register my number? YES, you must register your cell phone if you want messages sent to it! Wireless telephone numbers are not automatically included in our system and must be registered by the phone’s owner. Washington Township would like to thank Gary Van Norman for being a supervisor in 2017. Gary took an active role in the position and provided valuable insight and leadership. He will continue to stay involved in township government by once again serving on our planning commission.

Two new supervisors took office in 2018. Tim O’Brian and Shawn Wanamaker officially assumed their duties in January. Both are lifelong residents of the township and graduates of Northern Lehigh. Tim and his wife, Lauren, are the parents of three children. Tim is employed as a deputy sheriff for Lehigh County. Shawn and his wife, Michelle, are also the parents of three children. Shawn said he is looking forward to serving township residents.

Over the last three and a half decades, Washington Township has undergone many changes, too numerous to mention. Through these changes, one person has been there through it all. Roy (Smokey) Dengler when his term expired at the end of 2017. Roy was a Washington Township Supervisor for 36 years and roadmaster for 30 of those years.

I had the pleasure of serving alongside Roy for the last 10 years. While he had an understanding of all workings of our

township government, his maintenance of our roads and knowledge of township history is what I’m going to miss most. It was a point of pride with Roy that our roads were always kept in good condition and free of obstructions. There was always grass that needed to be cut or patching that could be done. As issues arose, it was easy to rely on Roy as a reference. He could often provide the history behind any development, road, or open field.

While a supervisor, Roy served on the Lehigh County Farm Preservation Board and he continues to serve on the township planning commission. In his retirement, Roy plans on staying involved with his church, fire company, grundsau lodge, as well as enjoying time with his wife Dolly and many children and grandchildren.

PROPERTY TAX & RENT REBATE APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE

The 2017 Property Tax and Rent Rebate program is now open and accepting

applications. The program benefits Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The income limit is no more than $35,000 for homeowners and $15,000 for renters during the 2016 year. Applicants are reminded that when calculating income, only half of Social Security income is included. The deadline to apply for a rebate program is June 30, 2018.

Applications and information are available by visiting or calling any of my offices or by visiting the Property Tax and Rent Rebate section of PA Department of Revenue’s website. If you need assistance in filling out the application, my office staff are here to help. Make sure to provide all the necessary income, property tax or rental information – including a rent certificate signed by your landlord – for your claim to be processed accurately and quickly.

Since the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program’s 1971 inception, older and disabled adults have received more than $6.7 billion in property tax and rent relief. The program is funded by the Pennsylvania Lottery and slots revenue.

IDENTITY THEFT PREVENTION AND CREDIT MONITORING

In light of the recent Equifax data breach and ongoing concerns over cyber security, it is now more important than ever to take steps to ensure that you are not a victim of identity theft. Here are a few simple suggestions on how to better safeguard your identity:

• Shred all sensitive documents that you intend to dispose of, including bank statements, credit card bills, receipts, utility bills, ATM receipts, and pre-approved credit offers.

• Use unique passwords that only you know.

• Be wary of giving out your social security number, account number, credit card number, passwords or user ID.

• Consider placing a credit freeze on your files. A credit freeze makes it harder for someone to open a new account in your name.

In an emergency, can the ambulance quickly find your residence, access your driveway, and get to your house? The extra minutes emergency response teams spend searching for your address or trying to navigate your driveway can make a real difference for a loved one in need. Ordinance #63 requires all property owners to post their address on their mailbox or building face. Make sure

your driveway is maintained and is clear of obstructions such as low branches so that the emergency equipment can get to your house. Excessive swales in your driveway can also be an issue for the larger emergency vehicles. Contact the township office at 610 767 8108 or Friedens Fire Company if you would like a number sign for your home.

FALL LEAF PICKUP Soon after the leaves start to change color in the fall, the Township will start our curbside leaf pick up. Please

remember to keep the leaves as close to the curb as possible for pick up. Also be sure that you don’t blow or rake anything but leaves into your leaf piles. Vacuuming up branches, rocks or any other hard object can be harmful to our staff and equipment. The Township has very limited ability to pick up leaves from State roads such as PA 873. Before putting leaves along a state road, Please call the township to see if pick up will be possible. If you prefer to drop off your leaves or brush, this can be done at the Township yard on Center Street between the hours of 7:30am and 3:30pm. Please be aware that leaf and brush burning is not permitted within the Township.

NOTE FROM THE WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP FIRE MARSHALL Smoke Detectors save lives. Change your batteries when you change your clocks.

Close bedroom doors, sounds like a little thing, IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE. Closed doors can provide protection against lethal levels of carbon monoxide and keep a fire from spreading faster. Fires generate temperatures of up to 2000 degrees; behind a closed door it could be 100 degrees. A door of any material/construction is an effective barrier against the effects of a fire. A hollow-core door can withstand a fire for up to 5 minutes; a solid wood door can last up to 10 minutes. Enough time to exit the building.

Synthetic materials in furniture, carpets, draperies and today’s construction materials can cause a fire to spread very fast.

Always know 2 ways out of your home! Be Safe!FIRE MARSHALL DWAYNE HENRITZY

Washington passed an ordinance regulating the parking of unlicensed and/or

unregistered vehicles on public streets. This ordinance sets fines and other penalties against those who leave these types of vehicles on our public streets. In the past, the Township relied on the state police for assistance, with varying degrees of success.

The issue of junked cars being parked or abandoned on our streets, often for weeks or months, is one that has been ongoing for years. Junk vehicles on streets are a blight and reflect poorly on the Township. The Township believes that public parking spaces are for citizens who follow the law and maintain valid inspections and registrations. Unregistered/uninspected vehicles can be an eyesore for neighbors who live in the vicinity of them.

Please keep in mind this ordinance only addresses vehicles parked on streets, not on private property. Please notify the code enforcement officer at the township office if these types of vehicles are being parked near your house. During snow events please do not park cars in the cul-de-sacs. The Township truck needs all of the available space to push snow and turn the trucks around.

A 3.3 mile rails to trail project was initiated by a committee of the Northern Lehigh Historical Society, Inc. in April 2001. The Slate Heritage Trail utilizes, as much as possible, the former Lehigh Valley Railroad right-of-way from a junction with the D&L Heritage Trail in lower Slatington, through Emerald to the Slatedale Fire Company’s baseball fields.

The rail line, opened in 1870 by the Lehigh Valley Railroad and known as the Slatedale Branch, ran from a junction in Slatington with the Lehigh Valley mainline to a western terminus a short distance beyond the point where County Bridge Road crosses Trout Creek. The primary commodities hauled on the line were finished slate products from the burgeoning slate quarrying operations in the Northern Lehigh area. In 1874, the Reading Railroad extended their line through northern Lehigh County and linked with the Lehigh Valley Railroad at Franklin (now Emerald) at a point denoted as Little Run Junction. The Reading obtained trackage rights from the Lehigh Valley over the Slatedale branch into Slatington. The

Reading passenger trains operating into Slatington became known as the “Berksy” railroad. The Lehigh Valley Railroad abandoned the Slatedale Branch in 1949 causing the Reading to cut back their tracks to Best Station. A local slate quarry operator purchased the Lehigh Valley right-of-way and kept the line open between the mainline junction and the National School Slate factory at Seventh St.

The Slate Heritage Trail is a community project, locally initiated and planned by volunteers interested in the improvement of the Northern Lehigh area, and the preservation of the natural and historic resources for the benefit of all families in the region. The trail opened up an area of the Northern Lehigh community containing hidden natural beauty and historic significance. Strolling, hiking, jogging, bicycling, fishing and bird watching along scenic Trout Creek are just some of the activities that provide fun and recreation for area families and visitors to the Lehigh Valley.

Slatington Public Library

When did you last visit the Slatington Public Library? The Library would like to invite you to stop in and rediscover what a library can do for you. We still have the books and magazines that you remember, but there is so much more… We have 14 computers available for public use as well as printers and scanners. We copy and fax for a fee. There are e-books and audio books for adults and children. We have an online catalog, and if we don’t have what you need we can ask for it from another library through our interlibrary loan program. The library’s website contains links to informational and educational data bases. New to the library are STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) kits, which have been bought through a grant from Mickley/Fravel Charitable Trust. These construction kits teach children science and math principles in a hands-on approach.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE LIBRARY INCLUDE:

• Book club every 1st Monday of the month. The adult book club meets at 1:00. The library provides copies of the chosen text. New members are always welcome.

• First Fridays – The library will join in with the local merchants to celebrate community. There will be special programs and events.

• Diabetes lecture on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Ed Bechtel of Bechtel’s Pharmacy presents different topics concerning the disease.

• Pre-school story hour will be held for six weeks on Tuesdays at 11:00am. Dates yet to be decided.

• The Slatington Public Library Board of directors meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month. The meeting is open to the public, and any input is appreciated. The Library board is interested in forming a “Friends of the Library” group. The library has always had many friends.
