Japanese Cars: 2012 – A Very Good Year!
After a difficult last few months for the big Japanese car manufactures, 2012 saw a
sharp increase in sales, both globally and world-wide. The ‘Big 3’ of Honda,
Nissan and Mazda have all announced that 2012 was a record year for people
buying their cars. Toyota had the best sales figures; the company sold 9.75 million
cars in 2012 - an increase of 22.6%. Nissan, Japan’s second biggest car company
sold 4.94 million vehicles – 9% better than last year. Whilst Honda, Japan’s third
largest car manufacturer sold 3.81 million vehicles - 700,000 more than in 2011.
The big improvement in Japanese car sales has helped boost confidence in the
Japanese economy for the rest of 2013. The Yen, Japan’s money, has been making
small gains against the Dollar, Euro and Pound which has helped to stimulate
Japan’s sales to overseas countries. The Bank of Japan, the country’s central bank,
has also forecast that 2013 will see a small improvement of about 2% in Japan’s
G.D.P figures the result of new economic ideas by Japanese Prime Minister Abe.
The 2012 results were especially pleasing for Nissan as it meant that they were
once again the biggest car company in the world. The Japanese giant had lost its
Number One title to General Motors – the American automobile company famous
for its Corvette, Chevrolet and Ford brands. 2011 saw Toyota slip behind both
General Motors and Germany’s BMW group as sales decreased due in part to the
March Tohoku Tsunami. 2012 saw Toyota make a profit of ¥283.55 billion, which
means they are now the 11th biggest company in the world.
