BATTERY PRECAUTIONS
The battery produces flammableand explosive hydrogen gas.
Do not cause a spark from the bat-tery with tools.
Do not smoke or light a match nearthe battery.
The electrolyte contains poisonous
and corrosive sulfuric acid.
Avoid contact with eyes, skin or
clothes. Never ingest electrolyte. Wear protective safety glasses
when working near the battery. Keep children away from the bat-
tery.
EMERGENCY MEASURES
If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush your eyes with clean waterimmediately and get immediatemedical attention. If possible, con-tinue to apply water with a spongeor cloth while en route to the medi-cal office.
CAUTION! If electrolyte gets on your
thoroughly wash the contactIf you feel pain or burningmedical attention immediate
If electrolyte gets on your clothere is a possibility of its sothrough to your skin, so imately take off the exposed cloand follow the procedure abonecessary.
If you happen to swallow elelyte, drink a large quantity of or milk. Follow with milk of nesia, beaten raw egg or vege
oil. Then go immediately for gency help.

Check the battery for corroded orloose terminal connections, cracks, or
loose holddown clamp.
a. If the battery is corroded, wash it offwith a solution of warm water and bakingsoda. Coat the outside of the terminalswith grease to prevent further corrosion.
b. If the terminal connections are loose, tighten their clam nutsbut do not over-tighten.
c. Tighten the holddown clamp onlyenough to keep the battery firmly in place.Overtightening may damage the batterycase.
NOTICE
Be sure the engine and all acces-sories are off before performing
maintenance. When checking the battery, re-move the ground cable from thenegative terminal ( mark) firstand reinstall it last.
Be careful not to cause a short cir-cuit with tools.
Take care no solution gets into thebattery when washing it.
There are two types of batteriestenance type and nonmainte
type.
A nonmaintenance battery has
TENANCE FREE BATTERY on itsmaintenance type battery does nosuch indication.
Maintenance type battery
Check the fluid condition by the flulines on the side of the battery. Obattery has a hydrometer on its tocan also check the hydrometer.
Nonmaintenance battery

CHECKING BY THE FLUID LEVELLINES (MAINTENANCE TYPE BAT-
TERY ONLY)
The fluid (electrolyte) level must be be-tween the upper and lower lines.
When checking the fluid level, look at allsix cells, not just one or two.
If the level is lower than the lower line, adddistilled water. (See ADDING DIS-
TILLED WATER.)
CHECKING BY THE HYDROMETER
Check the battery condition by thehydrometer color.

ADDING DISTILLED WATER (MAINTE-NANCE TYPE BATTERY ONLY)
1. Remove the vent plugs.
2. Add distilled water to cells needingfluid.
If the side of your battery is covered, check the water level by looking down di-rectly above the cell as illustrated above.
3. Retighten the vent plugs securely.
NOTICE
Do not overfill the cells. Excesselectrolyte could squirt out of the
battery during heavy charging, causing corrosion or damage.
During recharging, the battery ducing hydrogen gas.
Therefore, before recharging:
1. Maintenance type batteriesR
the vent plugs.2. If recharging with the battery in
on the vehicle, be sure to discthe ground cable.
3. Be sure the power switch on charger is off when connectcharger cables to the battewhen disconnecting them.
Always charge the battery iunconfined area. Do not chthe battery in a garage or clroom where there is not suffiventilation.
Non-maintenance batteries: do a slow charge (5A or lCharging at a quicker rate is
gerous. The battery may expcausing personal injuries.
Maintenance type batteriessure to remove the vent plugfore recharging.

NOTICE
Never recharge the battery while theengine is running. Also, be sure all
accessories are turned off.
If the headlights or other ele
components do not work, chefuses. If any of the fuses are they must be replaced.
See Fuse locations in Chapter 7locations of the fuses.Turn the ignition switch and intive component off. Pull a susfuse straight out and check it.
Determine which fuse may be caus
problem. The lid of the fuse box shoname of the circuit for each fuse. S8 of this manual for the functiontrolled by each circuit.
Type A fuses can be pulled out bythe pullout tool.

If you are not sure whether the fuse hasblown, try replacing the suspected fusewith one that you know is good.
If the fuse has blown, push a new fuse
into the clip.Only install a fuse with the amperage rat-ing designated on the fuse box lid.
If you do not have a spare fuse, in anemergency you can pull out the CIG &RADIO, DOME or A/C fuse, whichmay be dispensable for normal driving, and use it if its amperage rating is thesame.
If you cannot use one of the same amper-age, use one that is lower, but as close aspossible to the rating. If the amperage islower than that specified, the fuse mightblow out again but this does not indicateanything wrong. Be sure to get the correctfuse as soon as possible and return thesubstitute to its original clip.
It is a good idea to purchase a set of sparefuses and keep them in your vehicle for
emergencies. If the new fuse immediately blows out, there is a problem with the electrical sys-tem. Have your Toyota dealer correct it assoon as possible.
Never use a fuse with a higher
amperage rating, or any otherobject, in place of a fuse. This may
cause extensive damage andpossibly a fire.
CAUTION!If any washer does not work, theer tank may be empty. Add w
fluid.
You may use plain water as wash
However, in cold areas where tetures range below freezing poinwasher fluid containing antifreezproduct is available at your Toyotaand most auto parts stores. Follmanufacturers directions for howto mix with water.
NOTICE
Do not use engine antifreeze oother substitute because it damage your vehicles paint.

The following illustrations show how togain access to the bulbs. When replacinga bulb, make sure the ignition switch andlight switch are off. Use bulbs with thewattage ratings given in the table.
Halogen bulbs have pressurizedgas inside and require specialhandling. They can burst or shatter
if scratched or dropped. Hold a bulbonly by its plastic or metal case. Do
not touch the glass part of a bulbwith bare hands.
CAUTION!
