EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Project is an annual gathering of world-class minds from around the Pacific Rim who are instrumental in both driving and shaping the (r)evolutionary 21st century business agenda.

On 30 April – 1 May 2014, AUT’s award-winning Sir Paul Reeves Building hosted The Project: Digital Disruption, a two-day conference focused on the digital zeitgeist that is evolving and integrating into every aspect of our lives at an astonishing, accelerating and sometimes overwhelming rate. Organised and delivered by Foundation Partners AUT University, The US Embassy of New Zealand and Social Media NZ, The Project: Digital Disruption, was a successful follow-up to the original The Project: [R]evolution event in 2012.

Thirty-six presenters (including six international presenters) provided insights and perspectives on this year’s theme to more than 300 registered attendees, including over a dozen national media representatives. The conference provided a rare chance for participants

to learn how organizations are leveraging the opportunities created by digital disruption to transform their businesses and to enable New Zealanders and the companies they lead to better innovate, execute and prosper on the global stage. Moreover, it provided a unique and compelling context for diverse people and networks to connect, communicate, collaborate and hopefully catalyze something new and different. A primary goal was to put forward new perspectives and create energizing ‘AHA!’ moments for all the participants.

The enclosed compilation of data covers key statistics and metrics around attendance, media coverage (including social media), advertising & marketing and attendee feedback. This information is for our corporate sponsors and associate sponsors and other key supporters without whom this year’s The Project: Digital Disruption could not have taken place.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARYThe Project 2014 comprised four key elements:

An informal reception to welcome conference speakers, foundation partners, sponsors and other VIP’s was held at AUT’s Four Seasons restaurant on 29 April, 2014. Around forty guests met and mingled in a relaxed, informal environment ahead of the conference, enjoying canapés and drinks before a welcome and introduction from AUT Adjunct Executive Professor (and The Project speaker) Derek Handley, followed by a delicious three course dinner.

TWO-DAY CONFERENCE

DIGITAL DISRUPTIONS

‘CONNECTING THE DOTS’NETWORKING FUNCTION

An action-packed two-day event, where attendees heard from over 30 international and local speakers on how digital disruption is changing the way we live and work. The unique structure of the conference allowed for exploration of topics on a conceptual, inspirational and practical level, and brought together innovators and world-class minds from the Pacific Rim and further afield — some blazing with huge ideas and others who had already made their ideas real.

At the conclusion of Day One of the conference, attendees gathered in the main forum area of the Sir Paul Reeves Building for the ‘Connecting the Dots’ networking function. Over canapés, fine New Zealand wine, beer and Stolen Rum cocktails, conference attendees discussed the highlights of the day and made more connections than a super-sized Lego set.

A series of digital disruptions gave attendees a ‘hands-on’ experience with some of the technologies being discussed at the event. These included:• Conference programmes

accessible via scanned QR code from delegate lanyards

• Augmented Reality ‘Love Creatures’ activated from lanyards

• Laser cut and etched speaker lanyards

WHAT’S NEXT?

The Project 2015 will take place 15 -17 April 2015.

On Wednesday, April 15, The Project 2015 will host a speakers-meet-sponsors half-day welcome function followed by a VIP reception for all plus invited guests hosted by the three Foundation Partners. Additional details to be announced later in the year.

On Thursday, April 16, The Project 2015 will deliver a one-day thought leadership event focusing on the key trends relevant to the year’s specific theme. Past themes have included social media, the rise of Internet and mobile and digital disruption. Speakers will focus on the issues and challenges entrepreneurs, companies and industries face as well as key success factors and lessons learned.

On Friday, April 17, selected presenters will deliver seminars and workshops where attendees can delve more deeply and interactively into specific areas of interest and have more interactive dialogue with The Project 2015 presenters.

Additionally, this coming year will see the launch of Project Connect events. These quarterly presentation and networking functions will focus on different aspects of the coming year’s Project theme and provide the opportunity for the greater Project community to come together. The first Project Connect event will be in early-September 2014, the next one in late-November 2014 and then one in mid-February 2015 to continue the dialogue forward and build The Project community in the lead up to April’s full multi-day thought leadership event.

“The Project is a high quality event with very useful speakers from around the world. It connected people with other like minded individuals, as well as a wide range of people from different backgrounds and industries which made it very interesting. I think it was a very inspirational and informative event.”

- Marie-Claire Manson, Ogilvy & Mather, New Zealand
