2019 Lake Cargelligo Trip
by Jan McKenzie – trip reporter
Our group of Jim, Marcia, Peter, Fran, Mick, Anne, Graham, Jan, Sue and Roger left Silvalite
Service Station at 8 am on Friday, 25th October, enroute to Lake Cargelligo. This year we trav-
elled in a more circular route, travelling to Darlington Point for our morning tea stop, then on
through Griffith (with a quick glimpse at their “Orange Festival”) to Rankin Springs.
We’d intended a beer break here to support the town, but as the
pub hadn’t yet opened for the day, we continued. The farther we
travelled, the windier conditions became, with raised dust across
the road and in the paddocks – the ongoing drought evident eve-
rywhere.
After checking in, we set
up our sleeping quarters –
2 caravans, 2 camper trailers, a T-van and 2 tents (upon the
later arrival of Dave). The gusty winds continued, making
for challenging conditions in setting up tents. Then it was
time for lunch.
The lady in the Caravan Park office was new and had been
there for only 3 weeks, working almost single-handedly with a small amount of casual help only,
and a fish-o-rama and packed park the previous weekend. She was horrified when we said we
would be using the camp kitchen, which she hadn’t yet had time to clean from all the wind and
dust, as she was still battling to get through the cabins, amenities blocks, office duties and other
tasks by herself. We assured her, we would happily clean it, if she could supply the cleaning prod-
ucts. Since we came to the Lake to support a drought fund-raiser, we felt this was another way we
could support a small, struggling, drought-affected community. Many hands sweeping, mopping,
dusting, wiping, washing soon had the camp kitchen under control.
The courtesy bus collected us at 5.30pm, delivering us to the club. It only operates for about 3-4
functions a year with volunteer help. The rooms were already set up so we would be helping with
food preparation, cooking, serving, greeting and tickets.
Unlike last year, where we served the food and people sat down to their meal, a different format
was used, with half the people seated and half the people standing to eat. A smaller selection and
quantity of salads were provided on a table with servers taking the lamb hors d’oeuvres around
the room. Guests were treated to lamb meat balls, koftas, kebabs, ribs, sliders, and chipolatas

Trip /Activity Report Template
This is just a very rough guide to assist with the type of information that might be included in a trip report. Please feel
free to use all, some or none of this when compiling your trip reports:
• Name of Trip – include destination and all places visited in between
• Dates, time departed and where from, day and time of return.
• Name of Trip leader
• Number of kilometres travelled
• Number of people, vehicles, types of rig i.e. camper van, rooftop tent, tent, etc
• Highlight/s of the trip
• Negative/s of the trip – if any
• Comment on road/track type, condition, recoveries etc
• Activities carried out and a little detail i.e. fishing, swimming, walks etc
• General comment about how the group enjoyed the trip.
• Please attach at least 3 photo’s with your trip report
from the various producers. About 150 people attended the function.
This year there was no cabbage shredding, garlic peeling, nut shelling, etc, with pre-cooked jack-
eted potatoes, vacuum sealed packs of coleslaw and green pre-prepared salad, needing only fetta
added and dressings. Quite a bit of the meat was pre, or partially cooked and vacuum sealed and
simply required finishing off by our 4WD club. The remaining meat was cooked by “Down the
Track” – a team of local indigenous youth, under the guidance of their mentors of 2 local police
officers. The youth cater approximately 3 times a week in their customised van/trailer and the
program assists in upskilling the local youth, providing work experience, education and training.

Activity Report: Advanced Driver Training Course Well, after a number of years of trying to get ourselves in a position to run advanced driver training in Wagga for our members, we finally achieved it. And what a great weekend it was too with much learned and many new skills gained by participants and club trainers alike.
For this our first course, I was very pleased that we ended up with a small group of 6 participants (Scott, Ian, Brendan, Macca, Garry and Jason) who all had very good 4Wdriving skills as well as already being used to working together as a team. I was also very grateful for the expert assistance of 4 of our very experienced club members (Peter van Wel, Paul Kingdom, Clancy Salway and Andrea Sheffield) to assist with the training. Paul Fisher, the Head Trainer from Getabout Training Services/NSW 4WD Association made the long trek from Gosford to mentor us and to make sure we were on the right track. Paul is a full time trainer with outstanding knowledge and skills. His assistance was much appreciated.
So, what did we do?
Saturday morning saw us gather at the RSL Club to go over basic 4WDriving theory as a refresher. This prepared everyone for the hands on practical work at our Quarry Training Area where we took a prob-lem solving, team-work approach based on a num-ber of scenarios. The emphasis was on learning the skills rather than difficult driving situations. After preparing vehicles and completing an activity risk assessment, we broke up into 2 groups for ad-vanced driving techniques including guiding vehi-
cles over obstacles, hill stops and stalls, side slopes, traction control etc. Participants were able to experiment with their vehicles to learn their capa-bilities. With 3 trainers to 3 partici-pants there was good interaction.
Saturday afternoon focussed on vehi-cle recovery with winching theory and using hand winches (single line and double line pulls) as well as power winching in a situation that was not straight forward and took a fair bit of planning. Quite a bit of time was spent on how to calculate the recovery loads involved in winching (a combination of vehicle weight, slope of the ground, and the nature of the terrain under the wheels). As part of the power winching we had a very good unscheduled exercise in how to remove a kink from a steel winch cable.
Saturday night was spent around the camp fire which was very welcome on a cold night. As a group we went through the theory quiz as well as an additional quiz on winching. There was much discussion about the day’s activities and very constructive feedback.
Day 2 involved a number of sand recovery scenarios which again reinforced the “hierarchy of recovery” based on risks involved (i.e. drive out safest to snatch strap most dangerous). We used recovery boards, joined snatch straps, and different winching techniques (ground anchor and tree). Following the play in the sand, participants completed a water crossing exercise. To finish off the course we used Tyre Pliers to break a bead on a tyre, and everyone had a go at plug-ging punctures in a tyre. We then demonstrated how to use a high lift jack and a “bull bag” exhaust jack (generously do-nated to the club by Chris Parr).
(Continued on page 11)
TrackChat Issue 2019 Volume 11

All in all it was a big weekend, and although we covered many advanced techniques we tried to keep an easy pace and ensure an enjoyable expe-rience for all.
As well as the benefits to the individual partici-pants, the club has benefited through the im-proved expertise of our club trainers. We are
steadily building a training team with high level knowledge and skills which will be invaluable on club trips and in future training courses. As a group we decided that we need a “Club Vehicle Recovery Proto-col” to standardise procedures and communication in
situations such as snatch and winch recovery, and guiding drivers through difficult situ-ations. This will complement our standard convoy proce-dures and will mean every-one is on the same page.
Thankyou again to all in-volved in the weekend. I look forward to our next Basic 4WD Training and Advanced 4WD Courses next year. John Kent, Training Officer.

Peter “Spida” Everitt, formerly a Saints, Hawks then a Sydney Swans AFL player, and now a
Queensland radio-show host, proved both an interesting and entertaining guest speaker. He was
at ease mingling and chatting with the guests, listening to their various tales. An auction of goods
and memorabilia was held with ribbons awarded in the lamb “Paddock to Plate” competition,
with music following these events. Our exhausted group caught the courtesy bus back for a wel-
come sleep after a big day.
Eggs, bacon, hash-browns, tomatoes, mushrooms and buns got our day started on Saturday, prior
to travelling to Hillston, where we met Simon of “Select Harvest”. He took us for a tour around
the company’s almond farms – a mammoth operation of drip-irrigated almond varieties. We also
met the irrigation manager and spent an educational couple of hours touring the plantation, pump
-houses and dams, machinery lot and workshop, learning about gas cannons that attempt to scare
crows, $50,000 fans that aid in preventing frost destroying
trees and second shakes of trees to
get 10% extra almonds worth
$500,000. Flies were in plague pro-
portions and unwelcome company
on our tour.
We enjoyed lunch in Hillston before farewelling Michael and Anne who returned to Wagga from
here. Another gusty, dusty journey back to the Lake followed, with a quiet afternoon to socialise
in our less windy, camp-kitchen base, prior to our evening meal at the Bowling Club Chinese res-
taurant. Fran won a chicken meat tray in their raffle. Our evening concluded with drinks and so-
cialising in the camp kitchen.

Sunday began with breakfast and packing
up of our tents, campers and caravans. Af-
ter the 36°C Friday and hot night, a cooler
24°C and 9° Saturday night was welcome.
Upon leaving we visited the Lake Cargelli-
go Weir and Fishway on a scenic part of the
Lachlan River. Again, we spent our time
perfecting the “Aussie Wave” as the flies
found our company.
We continued a dusty journey on the un-
sealed back road to Condobolin, where we
enjoyed a visit to “Utes in the Paddock”.
This collection of utes has been creatively
decorated by various artists in traditional
Aussie themes. Hopefully, this well-
planned and developed attraction will bring tourists in to another drought-affected community.
After lunch at the park in town, we farewelled David, who remained in Condobolin to visit his
brother. Five vehicles continued to West Wyalong, Temora and then Wagga.
An enjoyable 3 days had been spent by all, getting to know some new members, strengthening
friendships, socialising, sharing stories and assisting other communities in times of drought,
whilst travelling through some different roads in our visit inland. Thanks to Jim for your organi-
sation of the trip and to all who made this trip such a success.
