    1.0 INTRODUCTION

Drive hunting or drive fishing is a method of whaling where dolphins and whales are driven intoa small bay or onto a beach in order to harvest them. Its often referred to as the Oikomi

method ( ) which literally means to chase, drive, or pursue. The method utilizes noisecreated by banging metal pipes in the water; the pipes are mounted on vessels referred to asbanger boats . The noise produces an acoustic barrier that will eventually herd animals intothe shallows or bay where they can be easily harvested. Today, drive hunts continue to bepracticed in the Solomon Islands, the Faroe Islands & Japan.

In addition to killing the animals for meat and pest control there is a small percentage of animals which are live -capture, animals selected usu ally for sale to the aquarium or marinepark industry. Statistical analysis of numbers reported to the Japanese Fisheries Agencybetween the years 2000-2009 suggest that animals taken through live-capture account for 5.5% of the total catch during this ten year timeframe. Due to mortality and other events not all of the animals taken for live-capture would be considered for sale to an aquarium or marine park.

This document will examine some of the reported results from each years hunt (Part 1) andfocus on establishing a baseline inventory of cetaceans obtained through drive fisheriespractices (Part 2) . Its important to note that the majority of dolph ins and whales are obtainedthrough drive fisheries located in Japan, specifically Taiji (Wakayama), however other countriesof origin will be noted when applicable.

2.0 THE NUMBERS: A LOOK AT RESULTS BY YEAR & SPECIES

The hunting of cetaceans through drive hunting currently occurs in two prefectures in Japan,Wakyama (Taiji) and Shizuoka (Futo) although Futo has not participated in a drive hunt since2004. Due to this inactivity the numbers below are indicative of drive hunt activity inWakayama only with notes to any hunts taking place elsewhere.

The following numbers are based on the calendar or fiscal year which actually overlaps twofishing seasons (example: calendar year 2008 contains numbers for the end of the 2007/2008season and the start of the 2008/2009 season).

In general the drive hunt season runs from the first of September to the end of March and thenanother 30 days (till the end of April) for the hunting of false killer whales (okigondou or

), pilot whales (gondou or ) and Rissos dolphins (hanagondou or).

Between the years 2000-2009 a total of 13,681 small cetaceans were killed by the drivefisheries in Wakayama (Taiji) and an additional 765 animals were live-captured. Please notethat the numbers in Table 1 (pg. 3) only reflect catch statistics for Taiji (Wakayama). However,

in 2004 Futo participated in a drive hunt that officially resulted in the catch of 24 bottlenosedolphins of which 9 were killed and 15 were live capture.Observers from environmental groups on site in Futo claim that the take was actually higherbut there has been no other verification. Futo has not resumed its drive hunt since 2005.Including the animals from Futo results in a total kill of 13, 690.

See Table 1, next page for each years breakdown of species either killed or live -captured

Annual hunts resulted in an average of 1445 animals captured per year with minimumtotal catch of 868 occurring in 2003 and at maximum total catch of 2,008 in the year2002. Average total kill totaled 1,368 animal with maximum total kill of 2,009 in theyear 2000 and minimum total kill of 842 in 2003. Live capture resulted in an average of 77.5 animals per year with minimum live-capture of 28 in 2001 and maximum total live

    capture of 125 in 2006.

Examinations of the average numbers reveal 95% of animals captured through drivehunt fisheries were slaughtered while the remaining 5% were taken as live-capture.

The chart below shows hunt results by calendar year with total catch (blue) , total kill(red) and total live capture (green) represented. (Note: total catch = total kill + totallive capture)

The 2011/2012 season started on September 1 st , 2011 and has appeared to have endedearly, at the time of this publication the last hunt was on February 27 th , 2012. * It ispossible that other species could be harvested up to April 30 th , 2012 and this documentwill be updated should that occur.

During this season an estimated 823 animals have been driven into the cove at Taiji ,Japan. . Of this total 719 (87%) were killed, 48 (6%) were released, 51 (6%) were live-capture. The status of the remaining five individuals (1%), false killer whales , isunknown.

A total of eight species were captured, sold & killed including: Bottlenose Dolphins (T.gilli), False Killer Whales (P. crasssidens), Pacific White-sided Dolphins (L. obliquidens), Pantropical Spotted Dolphins (S. attenuata), Risso's Dolphins (G. griseus), Short-finned

For animals that were live-capture Trade Statistics of Japan have a total of 62 cetaceanexports from Japan between January 2011 and June 2011 to a total of four countries:China, who received 44 animals, the Republic of Georgia who received seven animals,Tunisia who received five animals and South Korea who received six animals.

Through online news articles Ceta-Base can account for 35 animals exported from Japanduring 2011 & six animals between 09 Sep 2010 and 07 Dec 2010. The numbers are sourced from the Japan Progress Report on Small CetaceanResearches maintained by the Japanese Fisheries Agency and are consider officialstatistics however since there is no independent oversight on fisheries activities its

possible that numbers are incorrectly reports.

In 2009, a total of 1,242 animals were captured during the drive hunts in Wakayama(Taiji). Of this total 1,122 (90%) were killed and 120 (10%) were live-capture.. Specifics of the hunts by the day and details such as the number of animals released are currentlyunknown.
