There’s a better way to keep your horse safe.
The thoroughbred of fences
No other horse fencing protects your horse like Wiacoat Polytech Zappa Rail. If ahorse runs into the Zappa Rail fence, the rails absorb the energy of the collision alongthe entire run.
The rails stretch and the brackets allow the rails to slide through them before easingback into the original position. This unique shock absorbing design minimises therisk of harm to the horse. And to help the horse respect the fence line Polytech ZappaRail can also be electrified with a standard energiser.
Tough, good looking, durable and virtually weather proof thanks to a UV stabilised engineering grade polymer, the120mm wide Polytech Zappa Rail never needs painting and is easily installed without specialised tools. Quite simply, it’s the safest place to put your horse.

The tragedy s u r r o u n d i n g Victoria’s bushfires
has dominated our consciousness since the beginning of February and it’s impossible to comprehend the pain and suffering endured by those who have lost loved ones and/or their homes.
Yet, the courage in which those people have dealt with such adversity makes you proud to live in a country where, to paraphrase Rudyard Kipling, triumph and disaster are met just the same.
It’s heartening to see also that everyone has rallied so quickly to the cause, donating money, food and comfort to victims of the carnage.
We can only hope that when the final embers are DeaDline: 11 MaR 09

On Trackextinguished, that the flame of goodwill continues to spread as, unfortunately, the aftermath will linger for a long time.
By comparison, the global economic downturn has become a bit player, particularly in light of ‘not so drastic’ yearling sale results. Karaka was down by 33% on average, Sydney by 17% and the Gold Coast by 16%, but as bad as it looks on paper, it’s not all doom and gloom.
You can read all about it in our special sales coverage which commences on page 15 and includes previews for Melbourne, Adelaide and the new QTIS 600.
Good luck to those of you selling horses in the three states during March and to those seeking to buy.

HoW oFTen have you heard the term “necessity is the mother of
invention”? Highly respected horseman, Simon Durante, had a necessity in that some of his horses kept experiencing ‘tying up’ syndrome so he sought out naturopathic doctor and scientist, Andreas Marzini, in search of invention.
Simon was aware of the naturopath’s work in successfully treating lactic acid build up in high performance athletes and approached Andreas about using this method on horses.
Suitably challenged, Andreas set about finding a solution to an age old problem. Delving deeper, Andreas was convinced that available research into tying up did not take into account the health of the horse on a cellular level, but rather bombarded the whole body with numerous minerals, vitamins, proteins and even drugs … all to no avail.
Andreas discovered that by promoting the natural production of certain cellular co-factors it would support the function of ion pumps in the membrane surrounding the muscle and, as such, prevent a horse from tying up.
NATURALPERFORMANCE
Following years of research and clinical trials Duramar’s two flagship products were developed.
DURAMAR FORMULA 1 TYING UPThis naturopathic formula originated from working with triathletes, who were suffering from severe muscular pain, stiffness and chronic fatigue following extreme levels of exercise.
Though certain enzymes in the blood may initially remain elevated, sports performance continued to improve to its expected level.
DURABOOSTSimilarly, this formula originated from working with triathletes, who – in this instance – were suffering excessive lactic acid build up during extreme physical activity and were looking for a natural performance booster.
Lactic acid is an energy by-product that accumulates in the body during exercise.
excessive lactic acid within the muscles and the blood plays a major role in muscle fatigue during exercise, for horses and athletes alike. An effective regulation of the acidity in the muscle during exercise would
as such improve the contractile and metabolic functions of the muscle fibres, therefore improving overall performance.
THE MISSION“Duramar is committed to assisting every future or present champion in remaining ahead of the competition,” Simon says. “our naturopathic consultants specialise in natural sports performance and our products and services are based on revolutionary clinical research that does not involve drugs or chemicals.”
Anyway, give yourself – or more importantly, your horse – a competitive edge and check out the Duramar products.

but to date, Testa Rossa has not produced a Group one winning juvenile. not yet anyway.
That may well change on Saturday 21 February when his boom filly Rostova lines up in the $1,015,000 Arrowfield Stud Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
A Rostova victory would certainly be sweet justice for her sire … and not without a sprinkle of irony.
now standing at Vinery Stud in the Hunter Valley,
Testa Rossa competed in the 1999 Blue Diamond but was outgunned on the day by Redoute’s Choice, another truly remarkable performer.
nothing blue collar about Redoute’s Choice though: a son of the legendary Danehill, he hails from arguably the best family in the Australian Stud Book and his asking fee at stud is a whopping $330,000 a serve.
What’s more, he stands at Arrowfield Stud which, by the by, has produced the last four winners of the Blue Diamond. Redoute’s Choice has sired two of them: Undoubtedly in ’05 and nadeem in ’06.
It doesn’t appear that a son of Redoute’s Choice will provide the main danger to Rostova this time around, but despite
PUnTeRS LoVeD Testa Rossa. A real blue collar hero.
Although his sire, Perugino, was bred
in the purple – so to speak – Testa Rossa was more ‘suburbs’.
Mum (Bo Dapper) was unraced and while grandma was a Group winning 2Yo (Bodega), she hadn’t broken any records in the breeding shed.
All of which was a blessing in disguise for John Cappellin who only had to fork out $45,000 for Testa Rossa as a yearling.
C a p p e l l i n loved the look of the colt and, as it turned out, the motor worked pretty well too.
Testa Rossa won his first four at two including the Magic Millions 2Yo Classic and finished his juvenile season with victory in the Sires’ Produce – the first Group one for the working class horse.
Five more wins at racing’s most elite level would follow: a Lightning, a Futurity, an emirates (carrying the grandstand) and two Vic Health Cups. He also raced in Hong Kong and Japan. He was some horse.
Retired to Yallambee Stud in 2001, Testa Rossa produced a stakeswinner with his first runner (Rossa Glory), while Jiang became his first Group winner that very spring.
no less than 18 stakeswinners have followed, including the SA Derby victor, Testafiable,

the filly’s unbeaten status she is likely to chase the Diamond from the second line of betting with the John Hawkes trained Real Saga on the top rung.
Real Saga is also unbeaten and 40 minutes after Rostova’s Blue Diamond Prelude-G3 romp on 9 February, the Tale of the Cat colt ran a time some .8 seconds quicker than that of the filly.
What do they say about a good colt always beating a good filly? We’ll see.
Rostova will have plenty of fans though … growing by the run.
She was bred by Len Wilson who sent his mare Space Talk to Testa Rossa during the sire’s last season in Victoria.
Len, whose Garden City Plastics is the nation’s largest supplier of plastic flower pots, purchased Space Talk as a yearling in Sydney for $85,000, but she wasn’t much chop.
Although Len told The Age that Space Talk was much better than her record indicated, she was placed just once in 10 starts.
Sending the mare to Yallambee to be covered by Distant Music, the resultant filly was small – as is often the case with first foals. Subsequently named Distant Symphony, her only victory was quite distant … outback Queensland.
Heading back to Distant Music, the second offering is called Buckets who remains winless after 10 outings.
irongate horse of the month
But if ever there was a case of third time lucky …
Foaled down at Yallambee and put through last year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale on Len’s behalf, Rostova caught the eye of Flemington trainer Steve Richards who decided to ante up $80,000 for the free walking filly.
“I thought she’d go for $160,000, but I couldn’t believe it when I got her for $80,000. I went back and had another look, I thought I must have missed something,” Richards said.
now Steve can, and has, mixed it with the best, training the likes of Ark Regal and Blazing Sword, plus handling the powerful Contract Racing ‘string’ for about three years.
But Steve has been pottering along on his own now for a few years and while he currently has only 13 in work, this dare-we-say blue collar trainer can still spot a good type.
How good? Well, after syndicating his Premier purchase and putting the filly through her paces, Steve took Rostova to Flemington on Melbourne Cup day, winning the Schiavello Stakes-LR with plenty left in the tank.
The dream was starting to become reality for Steve, who had confided earlier to a couple of owners that the filly was “probably the best horse I’ve put a saddle on”.
Resuming on Australia Day, Rostova was similarly impressive in the Blue Diamond Preview-LR, winning by close to three lengths. Actually, it was probably more impressive as jockey Steven King explained that the wide barrier, level of fitness, weight and some contact in running were all working against the filly.
“Good horses can overcome those things and she did,” King would enthuse.
Leadup no. 3 came and went – quickly – on 9 February and despite Real Saga running the quicker time on the day and slipping into Diamond favouritism, you get the impression that Steve Richards or Steven King are not in any hurry to swap.
“I’ve never had a horse in my stable – of any age – with a constitution like this filly has,” Richards enthused.
“It’s a Blue Diamond and that’s never easy to win, but she’s done things so comfortably, so quickly, that she’s obviously going to be the horse to beat.”

The Gold Coast and Easter yearling sales – unashamedly – utilise a number of ‘ploys’ to garner hype … many of which have nothing to do with the actual sale of horses.
The Gold Coast is the main protagonist with its undeniable lure of sun, surf and social, but Easter isn’t above throwing out persuasive, albeit intangible, ‘hooks’ either.
Conversely, the Melbourne Premier doesn’t exactly engender the same warm and fuzzy feeling.
After a gruelling, hot day at Oaklands Junction you can be excused for wishing you were on one of the planes flying overhead. There’s no Royal Hotel, no bar at the Marriot and it’s a bloody long way to the beach.
Still, when it comes to the business end (and let’s face it, that’s what we’re here for), Melbourne more than holds it own: year in, year out.
well have added to the seven Group one victories he compiled last season.
Yes, he’s by a Hunter Valley stallion and was sold by Arrowfield, but give the nSW behemoth its due, Melbourne was deemed the ideal venue to sell the Hussonet yearling.
Weekend Hussler aside, Victorians can take some consolation in that they have sold the majority of the Premier’s flag bearers: Hong Kong Champ, Sacred Kingdom (sold by the Calvert’s Kornong Farm for $200,000), 4-time Group one winner Alinghi ($80,000 by Blue Gum Farm as agent), million dollar earner Littorio ($15,000 by Basinghall Farm as agent) and VRC oaks winner Arapaho Miss ($22,500 by Smtzyer’s Lodge – now Makybe). Makybe is selling a Hussonet half brother to Arapaho Miss as one of 2009’s sale highlights.
Dual Cox Plate hero, Fields of omagh, was yet another offered for sale in Melbourne.
And Inglis might well be able to add another Group one winner to that honour roll when Rostova (sold for $80,000 by Yallambee Stud last year) goes around in the Blue Diamond Stakes on 21 February.
So, what’s lined up for this year?
Well, for starters, there’s 780 yearlings catalogued for the four days (613 lots in Session I and 167 in

Session II) which, between now and then, will have its usual rate of attrition.
Still, come March, there will be lots of lots to choose from, including the progeny of 107 stallions such as elvstroem (53 entries), Reset (28), Fastnet Rock (26), Bel esprit (22), Flying Spur (22), Hussonet (19) and Testa Rossa (19).
There’s also six encosta de Lagos and a pair by Redoute’s Choice.
Much focus too will be centred around the first crop of Caulfield Guineas hero, God’s own, who has 31 up for grabs, while first season peers such as Snitzel (24), Stratum (19) and Rakti (16) are also well represented.
Individual sale highlights? Paper picks include an elvstroem half brother to Group Two winner Turffontein (Lot 98), a Dubawi half sister to 6-time Group one winner Apache Cat (129), an encosta de Lago half brother to triple Group one winner Regal Roller (216), a Redoute’s Choice colt from a half sister to Makybe Diva (283), a Rock of Gibraltar colt from Testa Rossa’s full sister (375), a Choisir half brother to Group one winner Grand Journey (407), an exceed And excel half brother to Group
one winner Carnegie express (428) and the aforementioned half to Arapaho Miss (414). All up, 19 half, three quarters, fulls and near enoughs to Group one winners are catalogued.
How will the sale fare overall? That’s a good question.
The Melbourne Premier has experienced incredible growth in the past five years. In 2004 the sale grossed $18.8 million and averaged $48,678, while 2008 saw $39.6 million jump into the coffers, realising an average of $84,949 and a record sale topper of $750,000.
Inglis’ proudly point to a 56% bump on gross from ’07 to ’08, although nearly 100 more horses were sold, but there’s no denying that a $67,100 to $84,949 average jump – and even more importantly – a median lift from $50k to $65k, suggests that the auction house is doing something right.
In the afterglow of last year’s sale, one might have anticipated that Melbourne ’09 might go over the $40 million mark, but the fallout from the global meltdown looks likely to put paid to such hopes.
Short of a crystal ball, this sale could go either way: a steep decline or slight correction.
Methinks the latter. While there are real concerns as to how the middle market will hold in light of economic woes, particularly as there are no six figure sales in Melbourne to buoy the average, the Premier has thoroughly earned its reputation for producing quality horses.
They might not all be superstars – the like of Weekend Hussler, Sacred Kingdom and Co – but trainers do come to this sale with the knowledge that whatever may perceivably be lacking on the page is more than balanced by what is paraded before them.
If the quality of horse flesh is there again – as its been so regularly in years past – the 2009 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale will more than hold its own: regardless of bottom line or social diversions.

PRODUCING THE GOODS
T He ADeLAIDe Magic Millions is a funny sale. not funny ha ha … more unpredictable if anything.
The fluctuations of this sale are incredible: average figures were up
in 2002, down in ’03, up in ’04 and ’05, down in ’06, up in ’07 and down in ’08.
To be fair, the eI crisis threw proceedings into a loop last year, but a clearance rate of 72% and average of $26,290 (down from $40,059) had everyone reeling.
normally, you could put it down to commercialism and athleticism – or lack thereof. But it’s not that simple.
The weird thing is, this sale produces the goods, right across the board : the expensive yearlings race well (eg. Tipungwuti, Victory Chant,
MARK KAvANAGH
2009 adelaide magic millions preview
Tullamarine and Miss With Attitude) and so do the cheapies (Mummify, Devil Moon, Young Centaur, Atapi et al).
And it’s trite to say that when you get three to four hundred yearlings in one place, the law of averages dictate some success.
Make no mistake, the Adelaide Yearling Sale – prior to and currently under Magic Millions’ stewardship – is arguably the nation’s most effective ‘diamond in the rough’ auction.
The adjacent chart might illuminate some of those diamonds, but you could fill this magazine with the names of other Adelaide yearlings whose racetrack deeds have far outweighed their asking price.
Take just two examples from Adelaide ’07. A More Than Ready filly with an oK family was passed in at $47,500 with a reserve of $50,000. The More Than Readys averaged over $76,000 that year, selling up to $320,000, so you wouldn’t think the $50k was totally out of order.
Retained by breeder and mates the filly – Augusta Proud – would win last year’s Magic Millions 2Yo Classic and now has $1.5 million in the bank.
Tempest Tost, who entered the ring just 13 lots after Augusta Proud, was actually sold for $72,500 and boosted those earnings 10 fold by winning the Magic Millions 3Yo Trophy in January.
But the results haven’t all just been ‘in house’. Mummify won five Group ones including the Caulfield Cup; Divine Madonna won an emirates and three other Group ones; Casino Prince won the Chipping norton; Undoubtedly took out a Blue Diamond; and Young Centaur – God bless his $11,000 cotton pickin’ socks – won last year’s Wellington Cup.
It’s a lengthy list to be sure, made even more remarkable given that the South Australian breeding industry was absolutely gutted in the 80’s: which obviously hasn’t stopped them from churning out the winners.
(It’s also worth noting that 4-time Group one winner Princess Coup was bred and reared in South Australia before being sold on the Gold Coast).
naturally enough, Magic Millions managing director, David Chester, is quick to
beat the Adelaide drum: “The Adelaide Yearling Sale has a proud history of producing outstanding racehorses at bargain prices,” Chester commented. “It’s got a reputation of being a real trainers sale. You don’t have to come and part with your life savings to buy a nice horse who will win you races.”
Trainers like Lee Freedman and Mark Kavanagh would undoubtedly (no pun intended) agree with David’s assessment.
Freedman picked up six yearlings at the 2001 sale for a combined total of $254,000. The six included Group winners Mummify, True Glo and Sweet Corn and all up, averaged around $1.5 million in stakes.
“I challenge anyone to find a better buying spree at one sale than Lee Freedman in Adelaide in 2001,” Chester adds. “Where has someone bought six horses so cheaply that went on to earn their connections over $8.5 million?”
Mark Kavanagh’s efforts at the 2004 chapter weren’t shabby either : snaring Group one winners Undoubtedly and Divine Madonna for less than a

Despite the heat, it’s a great time to be in Adelaide … the Adelaide Cup and the BMW Magic Millions Adelaide 2Yo Classic will be run at Morphettville on Monday 9 March with the sale kicking off at the ‘walking distance’ complex at 5.30pm.
The sale will continue on the Tuesday (10th) followed by the third session on Thursday (12th).
“If I was you I’d be at Morphettville in March. That’s if you’re after quality at a value price. If not head elsewhere and regret it later,” Chester summed up.
I think that’s David speak for be there or be square!

There’s an old saying that we’re all equal on the turf … and below it.
It’s true. The bloke standing next to you at the bar, wearing the fancy bag of fruit, might have more in his kick, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will end up with a better racehorse.
Money can’t buy you love and it won’t buy you a crystal ball either.
That’s the great thing about this game: some people can ante up the readies to buy an equine Ferrari, but for all you know, there might only be a two stroke under the hood.
Horse racing truly is life’s great leveler.
The history our industry is littered with tales of expensive flops that have driven owners to the brink, and – encouragingly – stories of the ‘cheapies’ who have given us cause to drink.
A glance at the most expensive yearlings sold in Australia for the six five years are a bank manager’s worst nightmare.
Quite obviously, the Redoute’s Choice colts sold for $2.5m and $2.7m respectively at easter last year are not subject to scrutiny. While both have been named – neither has yet raced.

nor has the $3m Rock of Gibraltar (Mount olympus) that topped the 2007 yearling sale series, but the $2.2m Movin’ out (by encosta de Lago) has made an appearance … six times for a solitary win and $40,750 in stakes.
The 4Yos, nodoubt Deja ($3m) and Alinghi’s sister Perfect
Persuasion ($2.6m) have reaped little of what their owners sowed with a win apiece, but the 5Yo ‘toppers’ – Makybe Diva’s half brother, Musket ($2.5m) and Dubai’s Choice ($1.8m) – have fared a little better with the former scoring at Group Two level, while the latter has notched up two wins and some $80,000 in prizemoney.
From the class of 2004 the $1.5 million Goldtown (by Sunday Silence) was Group Two placed and won six, but Danehill’s overlord ($2.2m) won a Sunshine Coast maiden before heading to the USA and faring little better, while Zone Moment, another $1.5m Sunday Silence, is – according to Bloodhound – still winless after 13 starts in Japan.

Les speaks with some authority, although his ‘claim to famers’ didn’t cost an arm and a leg. Double Derby hero, Handy Proverb, was purchased by Les for $7,000 in Adelaide in the mid 80s before winning over $700,000 in stakes and syndicated to stud for over a million.
Another of Les’ picks was triple oaks winner, november Rain, costing just $12,000.
Les had to pay a bit more for Circles of Gold - $50,000 in fact – but the Marscay mare won close to a million with victories in the AJC oaks and three other stakes events, while her deeds at stud are monumental: five winners including multiple Group one winners elvstroem and Haradasun – both syndicated to stud at many millions apiece.
“It’s all relative,” Les reckons.
Inglis director and sales rostrum guru, Peter Heagney, has probably sold more ‘roosters’ and ‘feather dusters’ than any other auctioneer in Australia and nominated the remarkable
The Sunday Silence colt Vril has, on the other hand, almost recouped his purchase price of $1.7m at easter ’03 by winning the Aussie equivalent of $1.6m in Japan (from eight wins). Sadly for owners though, his fellow Sunday Silence graduate, Pray Silence ($1.3m) has been far too quiet with only a Balaklava win to her name.
Highly respected agent, Les Young, of Doncaster Bloodstock points to some ‘mitigating’ circumstances, claiming that expensive, pedigreed types have residual value despite failing to recoup the asking price when racing.
Musket, for instance, won’t get the $2.5m back on the track, but his Group Two success ensures a career at stud for the Darley owned ‘bull’.
Similarly, Pray Silence – given her rock solid, black type northern Hemisphere family – might speak up from the breeding shed in the years to come.
Takeover Target and dual Group one winning sprinter, Brawny Spirit ($3,250 yearling purchase) as pretty much peerless when it comes to bargain basement.
Lobbing at the Inglis Winter Thoroughbred Sale in Sydney in 2003, cab driver Joe Janiak could not possibly have dreamed that the $1,250 he forked out for Takeover Target would buy him riches and fame from Queanbeyan to Royal Ascot. Five Group ones and $5.5m later, Takeover Target has done more for racehorse ownership than any slick marketing blitz ever could.
But where Joe’s Takeover gave us all a target, the greatest proponent of takeovers in Australia’s corporate history found money couldn’t work miracles with Paint the Stars.
Paint the who?
For those of who can remember back to the early 80s, Paint the Stars – then just a Luskin Star yearling – made page one headlines during the easter Yearling Sale when knocked down to Robert “Thanks for

Might not sound like much in the days of $5m mares and $40m stallion syndications, but back in 1981 it was a huge chunk of cash: indeed, the most anyone had paid for a yearling in the southern hemisphere.
The best Paint the Stars could manage though were placings at Bendigo and G e e l o n g , pulling just $800 in stakes.
A t t e m p t i n g to retrieve s o m e t h i n g from the w r e c k a g e , Paint the Stars was sent off to stud and, although he produced 333 live foals over 12 seasons, only three won black type races: the pick of them being WA Champion Fillies Stakes-G2 winner Strip The Moon.

A little over two years later, The Green Monkey, a son of Forestry, was retired to stud having had three runs … no wins. Triple ouch with a tourniquet on top.
Still, horses have made monkeys of us all at some stage and I’m always reminded of the pearls of wisdom from the late, great WC Fields.
Asked about horses, WC (who once asked who left the cork out of his lunch), said: “Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people.”
But despite the pitfalls we continue to speculate at all ends of the coinage scale in the hope of getting the monkey off our back. That’s what makes this game so great

QTIS 600 yearling sale preview
THeRe’S PLenTY of reasons to lob at the Gold Coast in March. The thought of being near sun
and surf in balmy weather is one that springs to mind.
However, we reckon if you have Queensland Racing Limited chairman, Bob Bentley, he’d give you 16.1 million more reasons to show your face in Bundall.
The inaugural QTIS 600 yearling sale will be staged at the Gold Coast complex from 29-30 March and it offers buyers the opportunity to compete for $16.1 million in added stakes
SeQUALo
and QTIS 600 restricted races.
That’s a pretty decent incentive, particularly as Saturday races in Brisbane already offer $45,000 in prizemoney, with QTIS bonuses seeing stakes zoom to the $80k mark.
As Bentley points out, the “current economic crisis has impacted on the number of entries received for the QTIS 600 sale”, but they have still managed to round up 468 likely types to kick off with.
not surprisingly, the 468 are by the Sunshine State’s finest, including Sequalo (28 yearlings), Show a Heart (15) and Falvelon (13), while this will also be the last chance to grab a son or daughter of the ill-fated Iglesia (23).
Queensland’s up and comers are well represented with Bradbury’s Luck (19), Break the Vault (15), Ferocity (20), Hidden Dragon (27), Jet Spur (25) and the first Australian crop of Greenwood Lake (15) all making an appearance.
QTIS’ ‘breedback’ clause adds interstate flavour too with Choisir, Commands, Danehill Dancer, Danzero, Fastnet Rock, Hussonet, Lohnro, Reset, Snitzel
and Starcraft adding to the mix.
“I am overwhelmed by the quality of entries received,” Bentley added. “The sale has been supported by all of Queensland’s major breeders’ and the calibre of yearlings catalogued is a great show of faith in this exciting new sale.”
Realistically, there will be quite a few cheapies up for grab and the QRL has worked hard at attracting new buyers.
“QRL, in conjunction with Magic Millions, has undertaken an extensive marketing campaign aimed at increasing first time ownership,” Bentley enthuses. “This campaign follows on from the, ‘It’s actually more fun if you’re actually there’ promotion, which has provided extremely positive outcomes for those clubs featured to date.”
QRL will be conducting a number of information sessions to outline the advantages of QTIS 600 and additionally, tours to the sale from regional areas are being subsidised.
To find out more, you can contact QRL racing services manager, Paul Brennan on 07 3869 9721, or check out the catalogue online by visiting www.getintoracing.com.au

17% DROP BUT STILL A CLASSIC RESULT
ASSUMInG that the standard on offer at the Inglis Classic Sale is on par with previous
years, a broad buying bench – liberally peppered with trainers from near and far – has gotten exceptional value in Sydney.
The 3-day sale closed with 392 horses changing hands at an average of $26,557 … a 17% fall in average.
A decline was inevitable in these straitened economic times, but, repeating a theme seen at Magic Millions last month, it was less dramatic than anticipated.
This is, after all, the little sale punching well above its weight with graduate success on the racetrack – recent luminaries include Group one winners Whobegotyou, passed in at $17,500 and now the winner of more than $1.5 million; Tell A Tale, a $40,000 buy; Triple Honour, a $50,000 purchase, and Typhoon Zed, a $62,500 grab.
Classic graduates have had a stellar year on the track and perhaps that is why trainers flocked to secure bargains, with a General nediym half-brother to Magic Millions 2Yo Classic winner Phelan Ready sold to Patinack Farm for $220,000: topping the sale.
The top selling lot on Wednesday was $100,000 for the Magic Albert x Sri Lanka full-brother to talented Sydney performer Leiserl.
As has been the case at so many sales over the past 12 months, Patinack Farm was leading buyer, snaring 16 yearlings for $888,500.
“Given what we have seen unfold in the northern Hemisphere and the first of the Australasian sales this year, keeping the falls to those levels (17% decrease in average and 18% drop on gross) was a reasonable result,” Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said. “After a number of years where vendors enjoyed outstanding results, this year is shaping up very much in favour of the buyers.”

FALL, BUT NOTHING’S BROkEN
IT’S DIFFICULT to put a positive spin on an auction whose average drops by 27%, compared to say the Gold Coast
(16%) and Sydney (17%).
But new Zealand Bloodstock MD, Petrea Vela gave it her best shot … and, all things considered, wasn’t far off the mark.
“The feeling on site at Karaka over the course of the past week has been one of a genuinely solid sale and the market here has proven robust in the face of these worldwide economic challenges,” Petrea remarked. “Unfortunately we have seen figures down on last year but that was to be expected after the record-breaking sale we had in 2008.
“There was good depth to the buying bench all week, but particularly pleasing was the strength of our local buyers who have shown great confidence in the domestic industry.”
The one who dipped most into his back pocket was Te Akau Racing’s David elllis who forked out $5.1m throughout the Premier and Select sessions for 25 yearlings.
All up Kiwi buyers accounted for $32.6m of the $74.6m grossed
over all sessions, while Hong Kong – headed up by the Jockey Club (25 yearlings for $4m) – outlaid $10.8m for 33 horses.
naturally, the Aussies – particularly Danny o’Brien (12 buys for $1.2m) – played another sizeable role with $24.5m spent on 240 yearlings.
Full marks to the new Zealand marketing machine because, year in and year out, they draw buyers like moths to a flame: Singapore spenders snapped up 66 yearlings this time around, but there were also signatures from Macau, Malaysia, South Africa, Philippines, USA, england, Ireland, Japan AnD new Caledonia.
Regardless of the bottom line, nobody, but nobody sells themselves better than the Kiwis.
And nobody does it better than Sir Patrick Hogan’s Cambridge Stud which has, for the 28th year in a row, departed the nZ national Sales Series as leading vendor by aggregate: 60 sales for $10.6 this time around.
In the final analysis, $74,624,700 worth of bloodstock changed hands over the course of the seven days of selling.
Yes, that was down 33% on last year’s record turnover of $111,148,850, which – in turn – was up 36% on the previous record set in 2007.
Like we said, there’s been a fall, but horse and rider are oK!

The feats of outstanding Australian horsemen and women were again highlighted at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when a talented young Eventing team won silver … and the racing industry is really starting to take notice.
While Bimbadeen Park has the features one would anticipate at a serious thoroughbred pre-training centre – including a 1000m grass gallop track, barriers and a horse walker – Rose believes giving a young thoroughbred a solid foundation in dressage and flatwork is of immense benefit.
“This training will make the horse more rideable and adjustable, allowing the jockey to ride the exact line they select during the race leading to improved performance,” Rose maintains.
A well-known face in thoroughbred circles is Central Coast-based Tim Boland, who annually prepares the Australasian draft of ready to run horses for the Hong Kong International Sale.
Boland has high hopes for multiple Group one winner Grand Armee, who is surging ahead in his eventing career.
“Grand Armee is thoroughly professional and it looks like he
will become the new star of my team,” Boland enthused.
“He has a terrific temperament, lovely paces, is easy to teach, is brave, is a very good jumper and certainly hasn’t forgotten how to gallop,” he said of the gelding owned by Alan and Cheryle Bell.
Boland has forged a reputation for working wonders with problem horses and enjoys support from trainers including John o’Shea, Gerald Ryan, Les Bridge, Chris Waller and Anthony Cummings.
“We probably do have a reputation as ‘fixers’ of problem horses, but we feel very strongly that if started out right, no horse should be a problem,” Boland added.
“We school the horses, from yearlings onwards, along equestrian lines, with dressage work in the indoor arena and a little gymnastic jumping over show jumps and cross country jumps.
“Horses love it and it keeps them from getting bored. We

also back onto the national park for great bush and hill riding.”
Boland launched Limitless Lodge – named after his equestrian Federation of Australia (eFA) national champion eventer – four years ago at Wyong and also has the Australian event Horse Centre at Duffy’s Forest in Sydney.
“I am primarily an equestrian rider – well, that’s what I’ve always done, and I have used my equestrian skills to help me with pre-training so I am schooling all the racehorses like we do a young three day event horse.”
Yet another high profile pair to turn their considerable expertise to the tuition and preparation of future racehorses is Blair and nikki Richardson, who are located at Vantage Hill just outside Scone in the nSW Hunter Valley.
The property is adjacent to Scone Racecourse, which has excellent amenities including
an equine swimming pool … an ideal location for the thriving professional equestrian operation to expand into pre-training, breaking and educating thoroughbred racehorses.
“With the creek flowing through the property we are able to get all the young horses used to water and there are flats on the other side of the creek to take pre-trainers for a good canter,” nikki said.
“We have excellent hilly country to do fitness work, and the plan is to continue improvements with a 24m x 10m shed and more stables to meet demand,” nikki added.
Blair has represented new Zealand on several occasions, while nikki competed for Australia at the 1996 Atlanta olympics.
An integreal member of their team is experienced new Zealand expatriate Diane Gilder. Diane, who is keen to progress through the grades

eventing with her own horse, was formerly stable forewoman for prominent Kiwi trainers Alan and Linda Jones.
“I think there is a much greater acceptance of what equestrians, and a traditional education for a horse, have to offer here in Australia than there is in new Zealand … possibly because eventing here is a much bigger scene and Australia has been so successful at it,” Diane said.
“It is really exciting that top trainers like Gai Waterhouse have embraced what we can offer.”
Perhaps the connection between the Sport of Kings and the gruelling sport of eventing is a natural one – after all, the vast majority of top event horses are thoroughbreds, and Australia is renowned globally as the source of outstanding event horses.

austbrokers trainer of the month
Everyone knows Butch. OK, you might not know him by name, but you’ll have seen him around plenty of times.
Probably noticed him at the track, more than likely at yearling sales (I’m sure he opens the gates!).
And while his ‘stats’ don’t have this Seymour trainer playing in the media’s A Team, don’t be fooled by a lack of self-promotional pomp. This bloke can train.
IF PeDIGRee CoUnTS for anything, David ‘Butch’ Bourne was always going to end up working with horses.
Both his parents ‘hunted’ and his dad was a fair sort of amateur rider. Butch’s maternal
aunt is Flemington trainer Margaret McCormick, with both mum and Margaret quite the pair around the showie’s circuit for many years.

austbrokers trainer of the month
over the next decade, Butch compiled a fair sort of resume, having only around 25 horses in work at any given time, but fought way above his weight in terms of winners to runners.
“At one stage the stable had a lot of winners in town – Saturday winners too – and I won a few country cups …”
Horses under Butch’s care included Final Tempo, a Group winner at Flemington and also winner of the Seymour Cup-LR; Salsa, who won the Winter
C h a m p i o n s h i p -LR at Flemington; dual Country Cups winner Mr Toff and; Just Honor who scored over 2000m at Flemington and ran fourths in the Herbert Power-G2 and SAAB Quality-G2.
Yet another was the speedy Wintrow whom Butch picked
up for $25,000 in new Zealand before the horse went on to win over $580,000 in stakes.
Butch was also trainer of Viatorian, who was placed in last year’s Debonair-G3 at Flemington and ran third to Light Fantastic in the Perri Cutten-G2 at Caulfield before being sold to Hong Kong interests.
Racing at Sha Tin in mid January, the Secret Savings gelding finished fourth in the Hong Kong Classic Mile-G1.
Although in charge of a much smaller team these days with “half a dozen in the boxes”, Butch is currently re-furbishing his Seymour
“A lot of people have forgotten about Wayne Walters but he was a top trainer in his day and, if memory serves, I think he trained the most winners in Victoria one season,” Butch points out.
“They were great times: one of the horses Wayne had was Torbek.”
(The nZ bred Torbek would win the equivalent of three Group ones: the Rupert Clarke [then known as the Marlboro Cup], the Toorak and the CF orr).
Taking out a trainers’ licence in 1984, Butch actually hung out his shingle in 1990, setting up his stables at Seymour.
But with his conformation lending itself more to playing point guard for the Boomers than being on the receiving end at a dwarf tossing contest, Butch had to seek his destiny out of the saddle.
Schooled at Ivanhoe Grammar, Butch actually kicked off in the family business: a winery/restaurant in Seymour that was purchased by his mum and dad in the late 70s.
Pursuing the dream that one day it would be someone else uncorking the bubbly for him, Butch waved the winery a fond farewell and sought out leading trainers to show him the ropes.
Serving an ‘apprenticeship’ with Alan Jones in new Zealand and Ted Cameron in Adelaide, Butch ended up as foreman for Wayne Walters.
“Alan, Ted and Wayne were all tremendous influences on my career.
“At one stage the stable had a lot of winners in town – Saturday winners too – and I won a few country cups …”

SWs Kaphero, Princesa & SPs Keeneland, Wasimah. ½ sister to SW Noble Hero and closely related to SW Hunza, dam of Golden Slipper winner Courtza (dam of Champion Sire O’Reilly), Our Pompeii etc.
Despite Swettenham’s purchase, Kaphero will remain with Leon Corstens and be targeted at the Schillaci Stakes-G2 at Caulfield on 11 October before a tilt at the Lightning-G1 and Oakleigh Plate-G1 in the autumn.
Villager ‘Walter’ wouldn’t “hesitate sending a bigger mare needing some speed over her” and reckons he “would be a great horse to breed to at about $5,000-$6,000”.
‘bradjm’ concurred, saying $5,000 to $6,000 for a Group One winning son of Danzero would be a fair and reasonable price.”
Five to six grand? ‘Bomba’ – aka Darryl Kerrigan – told ‘Walter’ and ‘bradjm’ they were “dreaming” but also asked why Kaphero would have to win a Group One to be a stallion?
“Kaphero could go to stud and show up a lot of stallions … a good 2YO that went wayward but is now a genuine, honest racehorse. I do hope he gets a good chance …”
With the way the Corstens stable is firing at the moment and as Swettenham is one of Victoria’s ‘go ahead’ studs, it’s fairly safe say ‘Bomba’
that you’re prayers will be answered.
In a press release, Swettenham Stud’s owner Adam Sangster said he was thrilled to be able to purchase the Danzero sprinter.
“It’s great to know that Kaphero is coming back to Swettenham,” Sangster said. “We bred him from one of our most successful families. Swettenham Stud has purchased three quarters of Kaphero, while his long time owners will retain the other quarter for his future stud duties.”
Word is that Kaphero will stand at around $15,000 inc. GST. Naturally, if he comes out and wins the Oakleigh and Lightning, that figure could change. The astute may well choose to phone Ian Rimington at Swettenham on 0419 887 184 before the Autumn!
stable and his keen eye is often utilised by both domestic and international clients.
“I trade quite a few horses and I’m happy to say that the likes of Wintrow and Viatorian have been very well received in Hong Kong.
“Locally bred horses continue to grow in popularity overseas and I usually inspect every colt at all the sales.
“Fortunately though, I’ve had quite a bit of success with fillies as well …”
Perhaps his best is currently taking up box space at Seymour.
Reverberates, bred and raced by the highly successful oTI Racing Syndicate, is a very promising filly whose victory at Sandown
in January was a ‘seeing is believing’ performance.
With Damien oliver on board, the Clangalang 3Yo got further back than Walla Walla, but once she saw daylight, the filly flew home for a thrilling victory.
The trainer was a little lost for words immediately following the race, but Damien said Reverberates has “a lot of untapped ability and it will take her a long way … Butch has a nice filly”.
Having a potential topliner is a real coup for the popular Butch, particularly as the filly has her bills paid for by such high profile owners.
oTI Racing – comprising former Australian cricketer Simon o’Donnell and long
time owner Terry Henderson – is experiencing a purple patch with Bauer running a whisker second to Viewed in last year’s Melbourne Cup. now Reverberates appears a real chance to add to the silverware.
“I’ve known Simon for a long time : he’s not too far away and knocks around with a lot of my mates. I trained Reverberates’ half sister (Porcelain Belle) for Simon but she wasn’t much good (her best was a maiden victory at Mansfield).
“I’m just glad he gave me this filly (Reverberates) to train and I’m hoping I can win a few more with her.
“She’ll be given a crack at the Angus Armanasco-G2 (21 February) and Kewney Stakes-G2 (7 March) and let’s hope she runs right up to her ability in both.”
one thing’s for sure : Group success this autumn will certainly have the name David Bourne ‘reverberating’ for some time to come.

• Muscle Injuries
Shinsoreness is one of the MAJOR causes of lost training days in young horses. We have had success in PREVENTING shinsoreness with the simple everyday use of our Magnetic Shinboots.
ANIMAL MAGNETISM AUSTRALIA
Gosford trainer Bob Law: “Since we have been using the Animal Magnetism boots we have had none of our two year olds go shinsore.”
“Back pain in horses is a very performance limiting problem that affects a large number of horses. There are many things used to help but in my experience the Animal Magnetism Rug with its superstrength magnets is by far the most useful ongoing measure you can use for this problem. Not only does it manage back pain, but the more relaxed & supple muscles actually aid performance and prevent injuries.” Dr Keith C Phillips Veterinarian, Vet Chiropractor, Vet Acupuncturist
