Tractor design competition 2018
Mr. S. Shanmugam, Vice Chairman SAEINDIA Southern Section and DirectorDesign Desk
(India) Private Limited talked about the evolution of SAE and SAEINDIA and also highlighted
the impact and outcome of SAEINDIA Tractor Design competition 2018. He motivated the
students to take part in the continuous learning process through various SAE student activities.
Then he thanked SRM University for hosting the Tractor Design Competition 2018 workshop-
1 in their college and presented the memento to the host institution.
Day 1
Session 1
Mr.K.N Balaji (Automotive consultant) handled a full day workshop on automotive brakes at
Automobile seminar hall. He started the session with introduction to tractors and other
agricultural machineries and moved on to explain about types of brakes.
session: 2
On 7th October Mr. S. Shanmugam, Vice Chairman SAEINDIA Southern Section and Director
Design Desk (India) Private Limited delivered lecture in one of session in the topic of
manufacturing, assembly and Costing. He delivered briefly about the Manufacturing process
under going in the industries.
Assembly is unique compared to the methods of manufacturing such as machining, grinding,
and welding in that most of these processes involve only a few disciplines and possibly only
one. Most of these no assembly operations cannot be performed without the aid of equipment,
thus the development of automated methods has been necessary rather than optional.
Assembly, on the other hand, may involve…one machine, many of fastening methods such as
riveting, welding, screw driving and adhesive application. Automatic parts selection, probing,
gaging, functional test, labelling and packaging are also involved.
Costing:
Costing may involve only the assignment of variable costs, which are those costs that vary with
some form of activity (such as sales or the number of employees). This type of costing is called
direct costing. For example, the cost of materials varies with the number of units produced, and
so is a variable cost.
Costing can also include the assignment of fixed costs, which are those costs that stay the same,
irrespective of the level of activity. This type of costing is called absorption costing. Examples
of fixed costs are rent, insurance, and property taxes.
Costing is used for two purposes:
Internal reporting. Management uses costing to learn about the cost of operations, so that it can
work on refining operations to improve profitability. This information can also be used as the
basis for developing product prices.
External reporting. The various accounting frameworks require that costs be allocated to the
inventory recorded in a company's balance sheet at the end of a reporting period. This calls for
the use of a cost allocation system, consistently applied.
Day 1, Fourth session
Mr. C. Sivakumar (BSAU) Event champion of Tractor design competition (SAEISS) handled
one session on automotive electrical.
Mr. C. Sivakumar, handled various topics on the basics of electricity with concept of circuit
and circuit protection for automotive systems. The importance of charging system was
discussed in detail. A brief introduction about battery construction and working and selection
of battery for the automotive application was discussed. In the starting system, various drives
and its working was disused in detail and role played by the starting system in choosing the
battery. Also the importance of other auxiliary systems like lighting system and instrument
cluster was dealt, with a special note on tools and techniques used in wiring harness.
Day-2: Session 1-
Mr. Muruganantham ( Siemens Pvt. Ltd. ) handled one day workshop on AMEsim for the
participants of Tractor Design Competition at Mechanical department seminar hall.
AMEsim is a simulation software for the modeling and analysis of multi-domain systems. It is
part of systems engineering domain and falls into the mechatronic engineering field.
The software package is a suite of tools used to model, analyze and predict the performance
of mechatronics systems. Models are described using nonlinear time-dependent analytical
equations that represent the system’s hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, electric or mechanical
behaviour.
Day 2 - Session 2 (parallel session)
Mr. N. Ravikumar (BSAU) handled a full day workshop on fundamentals of Chassis (frame
type).
Chassis:
A chassis consists of an internal vehicle frame that supports an artificial object in its
construction and use, can also provide protection for some internal parts. An example of a
chassis is the underpart of a motor vehicle, consisting of the frame (on which the body is
mounted). If the running gear such as wheels and transmission, and sometimes even the driver's
seat, are included, then the assembly is described as a rolling chassis.
In the case of vehicles, the term rolling chassis means the frame plus the "running gear"
like engine, transmission, drive shaft, differential, and suspension.

Program Feedback
Mr. A. Armstrong (TDC MC Member SAEISS) and Mr. C. SivaKumar (TDC Event champion)
other TDC Members clarified the students’ queries after the Valedictory. Finally, Mr. C.
Sivakumar delivered the Vote of thanks. He thanked the Faculty Advisor and the management
of SRM University (kattankulathur), Students volunteers for their continuous supports and
cooperation for conducting the workshop and making it a grand success. Thus, the program
successfully ended by 4.30 PM after taking group photography with participants.
