By Paul DaspitAFCDJS Sponsor Representative

The 28th Annual San DiegoDixieland Jazz Festival is “in thebooks.” And from all accounts, it wasone of the best in recent memory. Keyto the success of the 2007 Festival wasthe fantastic lineup of bands and invitedguest artists, and key to such a wonderfullineup are our many sponsors. So, thisnote is a public “Thank You” to eachsponsor for the 2007 Festival. Whethernamed or anonymous, you know whoyou are.

Out of approximately 2,500 patronsattending the Festival this year, therewere less than 70 direct sponsors for our37 named bands and artists. That is asmall number – less than 70 – but make

Thanks to Our Sponsors, Festival # 28 Was a Blastno mistake — each sponsor has a hugeimpact on our ability to bring top-notchbands and artists to the San DiegoFestival each year.

The lineup of bands for the 2008Festival is taking shape and looks to beanother fantastic year for Trad Jazz. Ascan be seen from the list on page 5,some of your favorite bands will beback this year along with a few newones. As the band list is rounded outwith the final selections choices have tobe made. One way you can help usmake the final selections is through bandor musician sponsorships. By Horace Meunier HarrisAFCDJS Member – U.K.

The jazz revival in Britain datesback to the mid-1940s with the adventof George Webb and his Dixielanders,a two-trumpet group loosely modeledon King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Bandand following in the footsteps ofpioneer revivalist Lu Watters and hisYerba Buena Jazz Band. Webb andCo. influenced and were followed bya second wave — the likes of ChrisBarber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball(the three B’s), Humphrey Lytteltonand Freddy Randall. Also veryprominent at this time was MickMulligan and his Magnolia Jazz Band, with singer George Melly.

Most of the above names are stillaround, but Mick’s jazz career wasrelatively short, from 1948 to 1962.In those few years he made aconsiderable mark. He was born in1928 and came from a family with awine merchants’ business in the Cityof London. However, he eschewedthat career and took up trumpet, becoming a strong admirer of MaxKaminsky and Wild Bill Davison, notto mention Louis Armstrong.

The Mulligan band was verypopular , tour ing extens ively inBritain. Mick played a forceful lead,a good example being the ClarenceWilliams tune, “Candy Lips,” which

he and the band recorded for Tempoin 1950. This early line-up wasnotorious for possessing two banjoplayers. Other fine instrumentalistswere Roy Crimmins (trombone), PaulSimpson or Ian Christie (clarinet),Frank Parr (trombone) who had asecondary career as a professionalcricketer for Lancashire, and Ian Pearcefrom Tasmania (trombone and piano).

His given names were Peter SidneyMulligan and “Mick” was a nickname. He was a charismatic character, around whom stories abound. At thetime the verb “to rave” was to enjoylife to considerable excess (to “burnthe candle at both ends”) and thedescription fitted Mick very well.Although at his best he was a brilliantmusician, he was not given to wastetime on band rehearsals nor did helook after his many trumpets. Twostories will suffice....

Mick was part of a band greeting

Louis Armstrong’s plane at LondonAirport, on the latter’s arrival inBritain in 1957. He borrowed Mick’strumpet to play a few notes for thebenef i t o f the assembled pressphotographers. Louis handed it back, saying, “You want to get the saveloysout of your horn, man.”

Bon vivant, Eddie Condon, onone of his visits to Britain, said, “MickMulligan is known as the EddieCondon of England. Some day I hopehe will beat that rap!”

For more of the same read GeorgeMel ly’s f i r s t vo lume of au to-b iography , ca l l ed Owning Up(Penguin , 1965). However, theriotous behavior of those days shouldnot cloud the fact that Mick and theband had a well-deserved popularityand an enormous influence on thedevelopment of traditional jazz inBritain.

In the late 1950s the band had aregular gig on Sunday nights at TheCavern in L iverpool . Themanagement allowed amateur “beat”groups to play during the interval. Iremember Mick telling me that onone occasion four scruffy youths withguitars appeared and endeavoured tosing. They called themselves, “TheBeatles.”

Mick eventually departed themusic world to go into business onhis own account. He left us inDecember, 2006, but his memory andhis many worthwhile recordings liveon.
