The new and improved chairlifts are expected to be open by the start of ski season. A $7.5 million off-season upgrade on Mt Ruapehu’s chairlifts should mean a faster, more comfortable ride for skiiers. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL), operator of Whakapapa and Turoa skifields is spending about $7.5m on a new chairlift, making it their biggest single investment in lift infrastructure since the installation of the High Noon Express at Turoa Ski Area in 2007. Construction of the new chairlift, which replaces the Cen- tennial and Rockgarden Chairlifts at Whakapapa, has been underway since late December and is due to open to the public on July 2. The lift will transport 2,800 people per hour, compared with 1,900 per hour from the Centen- nial and Rockgarden chairlifts combined. ‘‘Upgrading these lifts has been in our planning for years so it’s so exciting to see it finally come to fruition,’’ RAL chief executive, Dave Mazey, said. While Whakapapa is the only ski field on the receiving end of the upgrade at the moment, there are plans in motion for Turoa. ‘‘We have a program of lift upgrades we will be implementing over the next 10-15 years,’’ Mazey said. ‘‘It’s an ongoing process.’’ Involved in that process is resolving and achieving licences with the Department of Conser- vation – something RAL achieved for Whakapapa in December last year. Mazey said hopes are high the upgrade will boost numbers over the ski season as the new chairlift will give users a better experi- ence. ‘‘The new chairlift will provide numerous enhancements to the customer experience, with shorter queuing times, comfort- able ride with cushioned seats, ease of loading for snow boarders and foot passengers and less de- icing time due to the chairs being stored in a building overnight,’’ he said. ‘‘There will also be additional open days due to the lift being able to operate in stronger winds, where in the past opening would have been delayed or the moun- tain closed. In general, there will be more time for skiing.’’ The season is scheduled to open on 2 July. Local woman’s Alumni honour P3 Anzac Day coverage P5

YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE

FROM

THE

EDITOR

Last week we highlightedthe digital enhancementsat Taumarunui’s RegentCinema – this week it is

the new developments up atWhakapapa.

The skifield has a new chairliftfor the new season following a$7.5million project.

Why is this exciting? – Becausethe project will provide moreskiing for more people because ofthe bigger capacity and allowWhakapapa to be open on moredays – thanks to the higher windloading.

What is good for the skifield isgood for the locals.

The winter boost provided tothe Ruapehu economy is prettyobvious to anyone with a businesson the road to the mountain.

It is good to be able to celebrateour successes and the unique andexciting diversity that makes upour region’s economy.

After a bit of a lengthy hiatusfrom skiing, I’m pretty keen to getback up the mountain myself thisyear.

Have a good week.Daniel Hutchinson

Traci Houpapa is well known in the Taumarunui community. Just recently, the

accomplished business woman received a Massey University Alumni award.

Her dedication and commitmentto her work has led her to some greatachievements.

The latest; being awarded aMassey University DistinguishedAlumni Service award.

Traci Houpapa said she was‘‘floored’’ when she heard she hadbeen selected for the award.

‘‘I was honoured. I just sat downand thought; I was born and bredin Taumarunui ... in the KingCountry.

‘‘I never thought about getting anaward and being recognised just fordoing my job,’’ she said.

Houpapa completed her Master ofBusiness Administration in 2001.Since then, she has planted herselffirmly in New Zealand’sagribusiness industry and has beeninstrumental in raising the profile ofMaori agribusiness across the pri-mary industry sector.

She is now an award wining com-pany director and a recognisedindustry leader.

‘‘There are so many others outthere doing amazing things. I washumbled and overwhelmed thatpeople think the work I am doing issignificant,’’ she said.

here are a lot of walls out there covered with ugly old wallpaper that, quite frankly,

needs to go.Times have changed and the

bright loral wallpaper of the 70s is old hat. Don’t worry about whatAunt Mable will say (yes, she loves that wallpaper of yours dearly), but it’s time to strip of the old and bring in a modern, fresh look.

But removing wallpaper... isn’t that the bane of any home renovators existence?

It doesn’t have to be thanks tothese tips from Mitre 10.

he key to any home renovationis to prep, prep and prep some more. Because things could get messy (you are stripping paper ofwalls here) make sure you’ve got a plastic drop sheet down. he irst thing you should do when removing wallpaper is to try remove it without any water orstripper. If it peels of easily, keep going until it is all removed.

If the wallpaper is sticking likegum to your shoe, then it’s time to

These tips from Mitre 10 Easy As will have that ugly old wallpaper all gone in a day’s work.

move on and ill up a weed sprayerwith hot water. Spray the walls - thiswill help release the paste from thebacking paper. Make sure you tapeover any power sockets or turn ofthe fuse to the room - safety irst!

Start spraying from the top ofthe wall and work your way down slowly, ensuring the water soaks in.

Now it’s time to try removing itagain. Start at the top corner and peel away slowly, using a paint scraper to assist.

If your wallpaper is stubbornand is still not coming of, give itanother spray.

When removing the wallpaper, there’s a few things you should keep in mind.

Try not to gouge out the wallboard- you don’t want to remove any of thesurface paper of the plasterboard asit will compromise the structuralintegrity of the board. We really don’twant that. A paint scraper withrounded corners can be your bestfriend for this.

If hot water is just not cutting it,you could try a wallpaper scour to

puncture the face of the wallpaper,so the hot water can penetrate it.

For the really stubborn wallpaperyou may need a wallpaper steamercombined with a scour (bothavailable from Mitre 10). Simplyplace the steamer on the wall for afew seconds and peel of thewallpaper with the paint scraper.Don’t leave the steamer on the wallfor too long, as you could end upsoening the wallboard cover paper.

If you’re needing the big guns, wallpaper stripper can be used in the incredibly, very stubborn areas.

Aer the wallpaper has all been removed, use a sponge with warmwater to remove any adhesiveresidue from the wall.

And that’s it - you can now start prepping the clean walls for whatever your modern, chic inish is going to be.

MP pays remembrance to ANZACs

IAN MCKELVIEMP for Rangitikei

Numbers at Anzac Day services

increase every year.

This Anzac Day is a chance for us

to reflect on the effects of a war

which touched the lives of every

New Zealand family, and to

honour our veterans’

contribution to the peace, freedom

and security our country enjoys

today.

A century ago this month the

Government of the day

announced a half-day holiday, to

be known as Anzac Day, would be

established on the 25th of April.

As it is today, this was a way for

our communities to come together

and remember those who lost

their lives and the scale of the

impact war had on our population

of just over one million.

As time has passed, Anzac Day

has come to symbolise not only a

recognition of those who lost their

lives at Gallipoli but a recognition

of all our servicemen and women

who have served and continue to

serve in various conflicts and

peacekeeping efforts across the

globe.

Remembrance services will

once again be held throughout the

country, with the national service

being held at Pukeahu National

War Memorial Park in

Wellington.

Rangitikei and indeed

Taumarunui, Raetihi and

Ohakune have a proud history of

Anzac commemoration services

and over the years I have noticed

a steady increase in the numbers

attending.

In particular, the number of

families and young people is

encouraging.

This is the second of four years

of commemorations marking the

Great War.

In September we will turn our

attention to marking the

centenary of the horrific Battle of

the Somme, where 6,000 of our

soldiers were wounded and 2,000were killed.

The contribution that NewZealand made in France duringthe First World War in 1916 willbe commemorated overseasacross all three of our armedservices – Army, Navy and AirForce.

I encourage you all to reflect onour country’s experience of warand military conflict and tohonour the more than 18,000 NewZealanders who died, and themore than 100,000 who servedtheir country during the WorldWar I.

It is also an important time tocontemplate the price of war andthe continuing role of our armedforces in brokering peace.

We owe a debt of gratitude toboth those who have served ourcountry and those who continueto do so to protect the ideals wehold dear.

Lest we forget.

Why is my hairgetting thinner?

There are a number of reasons why your hair may be thinning, including iron

and vitamin D deficiency.

questions can be answered.

Your healthWITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY

I’ve recently noticed that myhair has started thinning. Inormally have very thick hair,my hairdresser mentioned thereis often nutritional reasonsbehind hair thinning – is thereany truth in that? With thanks,Lesley.

Hi Lesley. It is certainlynormal to lose some hair daily –however, there are a number ofreasons why your hair may bethinning. Here are a few:

Iron deficiency anaemiaBeing low or deficient in iron

can lead to hair loss. Symptoms ofiron deficiency anaemia caninclude fatigue, weakness andpale skin. You may also noticeheadaches, difficultyconcentrating, cold hands and feetand hair loss. Iron deficiencyessentially sends your body intosurvival mode, so your bodychannels oxygen to support vitalfunctions as opposed to what itdeems non vital – like keeping

your hair intact. The best way tocheck your iron status is to seeyour GP for an iron studies test.

HypothyroidismHypothyroidism is a condition

in which the body lacks sufficientthyroid hormones; it can result ina host of symptoms includingunexplained weight gain, fatigue, constipation, depression anddifficulty concentrating. Hair, nails and skin may become morebrittle and break more easily, andhair loss is also common.

Omega 3 fatty acidsIn order to have healthy hair

and avoid hair loss, we need tomake sure that we are gettingenough of the right nutrients inour diets, including omega 3 fattyacids. Adding more of these fattyacids to your diet can help toprevent hair loss and evenencourage hair to grow healthier.Omega 3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties, whichcan help to open the hair follicles, promoting healthy hair growth.

When the body is not receivingsufficient nutrients, the hairs thatare lost regularly each day areless likely to be replaced, and hairloss is more likely.

Vitamin DLow Vitamin D levels interfere

with healthy hair folliclesregenerating. Again, this can beassessed via a blood test.

There can also be physicalreasons such as excessive styling, straightening and dying, whichcan lead to hair loss. Heat andsome chemicals can weaken thehair, causing it to break and fallout. If your hair loss is consistent

it’s best to seek individualisedadvice from a health professional.I don’t have time to eat/preparegood quality meals, what areyour quick fix ideas that arenutritious for my family and I?Thank you – Fiona

Hi Fiona. Firstly, I do believethat in general, we need toundergo a priority check. While Iappreciate that many of us arejuggling many different thingsdaily, there is nothing on earththat replaces the power of anourishing diet.

Preparing real food does take

more time, but it is time we haveto allow for in our day. When wesay ‘‘I don’t have time’’ what weare essentially saying is ‘‘it’s not apriority for me.’’

How does that make you feelwhen you say, preparing anourishing dinner is not apriority for me? The reality is wecannot compromise our nutritionand expect to still have fantastichealth.

In saying all of that though, there are a number of ways youcan add nourishment to yourmeals that don’t take much time. For example, chop up a mixture ofgreens, spinach, kale and herbsand stir them through a stir-fry,salad, or soup – this is a great wayto add a little nourishmentbooster.

Prepare big batches of mealson the weekend and freeze themor stick to one-pot/pan mealspacked full of vegetables.

I cannot encourage you enoughto explore how to make having anourishing meal a priority foryou. You are worth taking care of!
