Taking place in a small, intimate town in theWelsh Marches, thePresteigne Festivalhas become a mecca forthose seeking artisticnourishment and

musical discovery. With a forward-looking commissioning policy, theorganisation works closely with composers and artists to create andcurate an inspiring programme of events for an ever-widening Festivalcommunity.

Having greatly extended its artistic reach over the last four years, to beseen clearly in the development of both the performance programmeand outreach activity, the Presteigne Festival continues to forge aheadwith a wide range of exciting new ventures. l

The 2014 Festival programme has a particularly strong Polish flavour;we not only celebrate the centenary of Anglo-Polish composer AndrzejPanufnik, but also include important music by Penderecki, Lutoslawski,Górecki and Bacewicz, and feature new and recent works by two of theyounger generation of Polish composers – Pawel Lukaszewski andMaciej Zielinski.

Other exciting ingredients include Stephen McNeff as composer-in-residence, a seventy-fifth birthday tribute for composer John McCabeand the inclusion of music from Welsh composers in celebration of theDylan Thomas centenary.

Chamber opera returns to Presteigne – a double-bill from Nova MusicOpera, who wowed Festival audiences with their performances ofBritten’s Curlew River last year. Cecilia McDowall’s exciting new workAirborne (a Presteigne Festival co-commission), about the life and lovesof a First World War Royal Flying Corps pilot is carefully balanced withStephen McNeff ’s Prometheus Drowned – a darker piece exploring thestrange circumstances surrounding the death of Percy Bysshe Shelley atLivorno in 1822.

2014 sees a very strong crop of commissions, with special prominencegiven to vocal and choral pieces – a Requiem for soloists, chorus andorchestra from Pawel Lukaszewski, an unaccompanied choral work, TheMariner’s Compass, from Lynne Plowman and a song cycle, Lie Still, bytalented young composer Toby Young to words of Dylan Thomas. Astring quartet, And the Snow did Lie from Hilary Tann, a work for clarinetand piano from Daniel Kidane (the 2013 Royal PhilharmonicSociety/Presteigne Festival Alan Horne memorial commission) and anOboe Concerto by Stephen McNeff.

Under the auspices of the Festival’s outreach programme, clarinet andpiano duo Kate Romano and Richard Uttley will undertake an autumntour when new works performed at the Festival will also be heard atconcerts in Birmingham, Bristol and Cheltenham.

The Waterworks Museum in Hereford hasbeen open for an amazing 40 years! So onSunday 24 July, they will be having a cele-bratory Gala Day between 1pm and 4pm towhich guests, members and visitors alikeare all invited to celebrate this importantmilestone. The Right Worshipful Mayor ofHereford, Councillor Len Tawn, will officiallyopen a new working display: an historicWW2 water pump which augmented

wartime water supplies from the Elan Valley pipeline and whichwill be restored in time for its own 70th anniversary.

Set right beside the River Wye, the main museum building is thenow grade 2 listed Victorian water pumping station which sup-plied Hereford. It is also a scheduled monument; somewhat un-usual for a site of industrial heritage.

Open since 1974, the idea to develop a museum in this locationcame from Stephen Southall, the then Chair of the old Hereford-shire Water Board. It came to fruition under the auspices of thenext owners, Welsh Water.

Run entirely by volunteers, the museum restores and rebuildstheir exhibits to full working order for visitors to enjoy. Havingstarted with just two steam pumping engines, the museum nowhas one of the largest collections in the country, telling the storyof drinking water from the 1850s to the present day.

At the Gala day, expect to see a cavalcade of veteran, vintageand classic vehicles lined up in the museum courtyard. They willprocess to the Town Hall to collect the Mayor and journey backto the museum. During the afternoon Hereford Concert Bandwill play and the museum exhibits will all be in full steam oper-ation.

All visitors are requested to join in the ruby anniversary at thisgem of a museum by donning something red and helping tomake this a very special day.

Car parking is free and there is access for visitors with disabili-ties. Tea, coffee and cakes will be available in the Visitor Centre.Children’s activities include trails, interactive displays, a dress-ing-up box, brass rubbings and the chance to operate one ofthe hand-pumps. Admission charges are adults £6, seniors £5and children £2.

It was another collectablestriumph at Smiths AuctionsJune sale when a 1967concert programme for JimiHendrix and Denni Lanesold for £140 whilst somemore traditional antiquessuch as brown furniture andceramics struggled to sell. The programme was soldby the original owner whohad attended the concertand although he must havefolded it in his pocket on the way home it was in otherwise excellent condition. It helped of course that the cover depictedseveral scantily clad women and lots of psychedelic swirly decoration printed in a gaudy palette of purple and orange. Obviously for a rock concert programme collector or Jimi Hendrix fanatic this was a dream item and not unsurprisingly thestrong interest was confined to a number of internet buyers whobattled it out whilst the delighted vendor watched with amaze-ment.

Another collectable item which might havebeen gathering dust in a garage or atticwas a Victorian wicker and leather picnichamper of small size and with a lovelypatina to the leather mounts and straps. The interior was fitted out within withenamel cups and plates together with awicker covered bottle and two glasses –perhaps ready to be filled with lashings ofginger beer. It sold on the day for £60against a £30/£50 estimate.

A small collection of transistor radiosmade a fun and interesting addition tothe sale and sold for £90. This is typicalof the type of collectable that wouldhave been widespread during the1960’s and 70’s and then thrown awayin their thousands over the last fewyears as first ghetto blasters, thenSony Walkmans, MP3 players and fi-nally Iphones and the internet madethem obsolete. I suspect these littleradio’s were collected at car boot salesfor very little expense and yet nowmake an interesting niche collectable.

At the better end of the pricespectrum an unusual diamondring set two marquise cut andtwo brilliant cut diamonds created interest amongst jewellery dealers due in part tothe fine quality and clarity of thetwo marquise cut stones. It is

also apparent that the current trend in rings is definitely for themore unusual and buyers seem very keen to find something ‘dif-ferent’ whilst staying clear of the standard solitaire or three stonerings. The ring was sold for £920 to a jewellery dealer in theroom against a £600/£800 estimate.

The most attractive item of furniture of the day turned out to bea bit of a fraudster since although it looked to be an 18th centurymarquetry chest of drawers in the Dutch style it actually datedfrom the early 20th century. It was such a convincing piece fromthe outside that it took Smiths a number of interior images andtelephone conversations to convince some buyers that the cat-alogued age of circa 1900 was actually correct. However thisdid not seem to deter bidders who simply admired it’s beautyand it sold on the day for £820 against a £500/£700 estimate.

Smiths next auction is on the 18th of July at 10am, viewing ison the day prior 10am-7pm and the catalogue can be viewedonline at www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk

Herefordshire & the Forest of DeanHerefordshire & the Forest of Dean20

From July we will be stocking our range of mid-summer to autumn flowering herbaceous plants. These are ideal for attracting insects such as bees, butterflies and moths and theyalso provide them with the essential nectar for energy that theyrequire for hibernation.

Our range will include asters (daisy type white to deep purpleflowers, ideal for the front to the back of the border dependingon their height), helianthus (bright yellow flowers on tallstemmed specimens, ideal to add height in sunny borders), he-leniums (golden yellow and orange flowers on medium heightstems), rudbeckias and echinaceas (medium height plants withwhite, pink, yellow or orange flowers) and last but not least se-dums with their highly attractive clusters of star shaped pink orwhite flowers.

Summer is also the time of year when grasses come in to theirown. They will add height to the back of your border, especiallyMiscanthus which can have either stripy green and yellow fo-liage (Zebrinus) or blue/grey tinted foliage (Morning Light). Mostgrasses prefer poor and shallow growing conditions and aretherefore ideal for those very sunny and dry borders. If yourgarden conditions are moist to wet then the sedges can providea range of colour for the middle and front of your borders. Par-ticularly attractive are Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’ (gold variegatedfoliage) or for moist but not too wet areas why not try the Carexgrass with its wide range of colours and habit: ‘Milk Chocolate’(brown fountain shaped foliage), ‘Limeshine’ (lime tufted foliage)or ‘Bronzita’ (upright bronze foliage). For those of us with ablues feeling then there is nothing better than Festuca glauca‘Intense Blue’ which will remain in colour most of the year.

Not to be outdone by the tall late flowering herbaceous peren-nials, clematis will also provide a range of flower shapes andcolours with the viticella (mid to late summer flowering), texensisand tangutica (summer through to autumn) and cirrhosa (lateauturmn into winter flowering) varieties. Some of particular in-terest are vit. ‘Etoile Violette’ (deep purple), ‘John Howells’ (red-dish pink) and ‘Betty Corning’ (pale blue). Amongst thetangutica varieties, one of the best is ‘Lambton Park’ with largeyellow flowers followed by thick fluffy seed heads.

As we are nearing the end of the summer bedding season wenow have special offers on our 9cm basket/patio plants £1.69each, buy one get one free. Also in our buy one get one freeoffer are the 10.5cm geraniums priced at £2.25 each.

Thinking ahead it is now time to plan and order bare root hedg-ing and soft fruits ready for autumn planting. In the meantimeautumn and winter bedding of pansies, violas and cyclamen willbe hitting the shelves of garden centres from mid August.

Watch_Dogs™ is a massively popular ‘next-gen’ game forPS4, Xbox One and PC. One of the biggest titles on the newsystems, it follows a similar trend to many games before it:Take one character, run around a city, do the missions when-ever you like. As with many others, these missions are oftennecessary to get the most out of the city itself.

Special Features: Hacking, Stealth, Microgames,Minigames, Civilian Characters

Hacking: 9/10The main factor that makes Watch_Dogs unique is the hack-ing. The premise is simple - the city of Chicago has beenwired up to a central computer system, and you’ve hackedinto it. This means you can open cars, listen in on phone con-versations, change traffic lights and make streetlights ex-plode; the one issue is that in many areas the hacking startsto feel repetitive, with some of the only unique hacks hap-pening in the missions.

Stealth: 9/10It’s easy enough to sneak around in Watch_Dogs. There areplenty of shadows, more than enough things to hide behindand certainly no lack of dark clothes to wear. That said, it’swhat the stealth is for that’s the gem; while you may sneakaround to get through missions, you’ll also do it to stop some-one seeing you, or to catch a criminal red-handed. It’s almostflawlessly integrated with the hacks, too; the only flaw is thatoften you’re forced to use a hack when some careful leveldesign could have been much more satisfying.

Microgames: 7/10In many areas around the city are games such as poker, withresidents willing to let you into the game with little difficulty. It’s easy to get into, and a fun change of pace, but there justisn’t as much breadth here as there could be, with almost allof them being traditional gambling games (and almost al-ways poker, for that matter). They add to the gameplay and

the feel of the city but the biggestissue is how good they could have been.

Minigames: 10/10The minigames - or “Digital Trips”, as they’re marketed to theplayer - allow you to enter something a little more satisfyingthan the microgames. The depth to each one is immense;from a game based on flying through the air via giant, psy-chedelic flowers through a game of sneaking past robo-zom-bie types to a destruction-fest as a spider-tank (possibly themost fun single experience in the game), all of them feel likethey’ve had a lot of time and effort put into them.

Civilian Characters: 10/10Each person walking around the city, when looked at throughthe CtOS (the computer system to which Chicago is wiredup), has a name, job and income - at least. It really addsdepth that each person acts differently; some rush, somestroll, some sit on benches and watch sunsets. Each char-acter feels like a person and there are hundreds of them atleast. It’s a testament to the depth of the game that nobodyfeels like a background event; every character is involved inthe story, every person walking around is part of the city.

Beach-time BooksSummer’s here, and for many it’s an opportunity to indulge insome holiday reading: reclining on a sunbed, stretched out ona beach towel or even on a lilo (mind you don’t drop your book)! Here’s a sample of some of this summer’s blockbusters to keepyou entertained. And if you don’t want to fill your case withpaper, all of these books are available in e-reader version.

If you’re a fan of intrigue – inside and out of traditional crime/po-lice novels – there is plenty to get stuck into:

Eeny Meeny by M.J. Arlidge introduces DetectiveChief Inspector Helen Grace struggling to solvea series of desperate murders. Victims are beingabducted in pairs and faced with the choice ofkilling or being killed. The manipulative criminalbehind the forced murders always seems to beone step ahead. Can Grace catch up, and canshe heal the wounds from own dark past ?

Cry Baby by David Jackson also features a char-acter pressured to kill, this time in an Americansetting. Erin Vogel wakes in her apartment tofind her baby has been kidnapped. The kidnap-per demands a high and gruesome price for herreturn. How far can Erin make herself go to en-sure the safe return of her child ? A well-writtenand unexpectedly compassionate read, thisnovel is likely to surprise you.

The Silkworm is the second book by Robert Galbraith (yes, that’s J.K. Rowling to you and me)to feature detective Cormoran Strike and hisplucky assistant Robin Ellacott. Called in to helptrack down a missing novelist, Strike and Robinsoon discover that he had written a poison-penbook which was bound to create hostility – tothe point of murder. The plot romps along andthe interaction between the crimesolving duois enjoyable, whether or not you follow the insand outs of the publishing world.

Before we Met by Lucie Whitehouse is billed bymany as this year’s Gone Girl. In a parallel to thatearlier book, Before We Met opens with a spousegone missing – but in this case it is Mark, whosefailure to arrive back at Heathrow starts wife Hannah off on a road of discovery that brings intoquestion her rosy picture of their relationship.Revelations and lies abound in the twisty plot, asan atmosphere of paranoia and distrust builds toa gripping climax.

There are also plenty of books to engage your emotions.

The Lie by Helen Dunmore recounts the fictionaltale of Daniel Branwell, a soldier in the First WorldWar, who has returned to his childhood home inCornwall and been given shelter by elderly neigh-bour Mary Pascoe. Physically resilient, Dan worksto restore Mary’s land and cottage but he ishaunted by memories of the war and his child-hood friend Frederick who lost his live in it. AsDan rebuilds relations with Frederick’s sister Felicia, andher young child, the prospect of redemption glimmers; but canDan escape the consequences of a tragic lie ? This beautifullypaced novel has a great sense of place and the nuances of in-teractions between friends and sweethearts. It may make youwish you had brought along a couple of other novels from HelenDunmore’s back catalogue.

It’s worth giving another plug to John Green’spoignant yet funny book The Fault In Our Starseven though this book has now been out for sometime. If you haven’t yet read this sweet tale of therelationship between young cancer sufferersHazel and Augustus, do it now before you watchthe film ! It’s worth it, even if you may need toreach for some tissues by the end.

Prepare your heart for another assault in And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. This epic tale starts with a loving father telling thefolk tale of farmer Baba Ayub to his son Abdullahand young daughter Pari as the family travelsacross Afghanistan in search of work. Eventsconspire to tear the family apart, and the subse-quent plot spans continents and decades, inter-twining the story of the rebuilding of a nationwith a moving exploration of the bonds thatunite us to one another.

On a lighter note, bring a smile to you face with thedelightful The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. The story is told from the point of view of Don Till-man, genetics professor at an Australian univer-sity, and the reader soon works out that Don maybe approaching the far end of the Asperger’s

spectrum. Having discovered that married menlive longer, Don sets out to find a wife with thehelp of a “foolproof” questionnaire. This is a genuinely hilarious but warm-hearted book.

Meet the new Ford Fiesta Red Edition and Fiesta Black Edition-- two new Fiestas that combine head-turning looks, unexpectedperformance and excellent fuel efficiency.

Available to order now and in dealerships from September, theFiesta Red Edition and Black Edition will be the most powerful1-litre volume production cars ever. In point of fact, the new 140PS version of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost offers more power per litrethan the Bugatti Veyron and the Ferrari 458 Speciale.

Inspired by global fashion trends for strong colour contrasts, thetwo-tone models are available in Race Red, complemented bygloss black roof and detailing; and Panther Black, with a glossred roof and detailing.

“These two new Fiestas make an unquestionablybold statement on the road and will give drivers anequally distinctive experience behind the wheel witha sportier version of our 1.0-litre EcoBoost and en-hancements to the Fiesta’s acclaimed ride and han-dling,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president,Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe.

Distinctive designThe three-door models feature front upper and lowergrille surrounds, front bumper aerofoil and mirrorcaps in contrasting colours, with Panther Black 16-inch or optional 17-inch alloy wheels. The body kitoffers front and rear sports bumpers, side skirts andrear roof spoiler; and the contrasting colour roof onboth models has been painted to achieve a consis-tent and higher quality gloss finish than can beachieved using a foil applique or sticker.

The models feature gloss black centre stack and door handles;black leather sports steering wheel and gear lever gaiter withred stitching; black floor mats with red stitching; and charcoalblack sport seats in Ultimate material with contrasting red stitch-ing and bolster exteriors.

Most powerful 1.0-litre volume production car engine everThe 140 PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost features a unique calibration withnew settings for turbocharger boost control, valve-timings, in-tercooler and throttle management to deliver 12 per cent morepower and an even sportier driving experience with 0-100 km/h(0-62 mph) acceleration in 9.0 seconds and a top speed of 201km/h (125 mph), while still delivering 4.5 l/100 km (62.8 mpg)fuel efficiency and 104 g/km CO2 emissions.

“This new 140 PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine now delivers morethan twice the power on a litre-for-litre basis than its predecessor– the 1.6-litre 100 PS engine that powered the sporty Fiesta Sjust 10 years ago,” said Andrew Fraser, manager, Gasoline Cal-ibration, Ford of Europe. “I believe this engine sets a new bench-mark for power combined with fuel efficiency from a small petrolengine.”

Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine was named International En-gine of the Year in 2012 and 2013. Like the 100 PS and 125 PSversions of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost that were chosen by nearly30 per cent of Fiesta customers in the first quarter of 2014, the140 PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost uses turbocharging, twin-independentVariable Cam Timing and high-pressure direct-injection tech-nologies..
