Message from the Headmaster

As I write this letter school has yet again begun at One Matignon Road. It has been 68 years since the doors first opened at One Matignon Road, and the Sisters of St. Joseph enthusiastically welcomed students into our hallowed halls. Over the

decades much has changed in our world, North Cambridge, and at Matignon High School. However, the excitement of the start of school, and the values which are taught here at Matignon High School are two constants.

The 2015-16 school year is set to be a historic one in the history of Matignon High School. We opened school with our largest enrollment in several decades! We were proud to welcome our new Freshman Class, the Class of 2019. This class is 121 members strong, the largest entering class in recent memory! The excitement and enthusiasm which has been growing on campus over the past number of years now mirrors the exceptionalism that for decades

marked the Matignon experience.

This year will also be historic for several other reasons. First, we begin our mandatory “Bring Your Own Device” program for our students. This BYOD program will allow our students and faculty to explore and engage in many exciting ways,

opening the doors of knowledge to the infinite amount of resources beyond One Matignon Road. Also this year, we will begin our new STEM Program, STREAMing 2020. This program will help design unique opportunities in Science, Engineering, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math, such as the launch of a Matignon Robotics Club, enhanced science opportunities in Cambridge, and cross-discipline training of all our faculty in these specialized areas. We will also begin a Strategic Plan this year, which will help us lay out a strategic vision for our educational program.

This work is not ours alone. I invite each of you to assist in this holy mission of serving our students. Each of you has gifts that you can share with our students and I humbly ask you to consider doing so. I am reminded of Paul’s words in his Letter to the Romans, “Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; in service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.”

I invite each of you to assist us in our mission; as a mentor to students, through your counsel and advice, as a benefactor, working with students in the class-room, by providing internships to our students, by attending or sponsoring events such as our Scholarship Gala, or in the myriad of other ways you feel called to serve. Please consider helping us to continue to serve the students of Matignon High School.

I pray that God continues to bless each of you and the entire Matignon High School community.

Sincerely,Timothy M. Welsh, Headmaster

Message from the PresidentThis past May, the Class of 1965, celebrated its 50th year graduation anniversary with a Golden Jubilarian ceremony at Matignon. This took place as part of the commencement activities for the Class of 2015.

It was a very special evening. Over 20 of my classmates attended. We enjoyed a reception before graduation in the new media room and a dinner afterwards in the cafeteria (not new, but somehow warm despite the same tiled walls and linoleum floors from many years ago). Most had not been to the school in decades. There was a connec-tion that went beyond the friendships, that went to the memories of our time at Matignon and to the school itself. The warm, good feelings were palpable.

We also enjoyed seeing the new graduates of the Class of 2015 receive their diplomas and hearing about their plans for the coming year. I think we felt a connection with them that bridged the 50 years. After all, we were sitting in the same auditorium those many years ago full of our hopes and dreams for the future.

Matignon has changed since our days here. It still operates with an affiliation with the Archdiocese of Boston as before, but is now governed by an independent board of directors. I became involved with the board almost ten years ago. I remain involved because the school did so much for me and I want to see its mission continue for today’s generation of children and families that we were then.

One of the important changes necessary to being successful going forward as more of an independent private school, but still with the Catholic sponsorship of the diocese, is attaining the financial support of the Matignon community especially for scholarships and financial aid. This past May the school had its inaugural Matignon High School Scholarship Dinner and Gala. It was an overwhelming success. Thanks to so many of our friends and alumni, we raised over $225,000 for the evening. We had over 200 people in attendance. This was a significant milestone for the school. With your help we will continue to grow this event as well as other advancement efforts. I’m very proud of Matignon’s history and look forward to even greater success in the future.

Best wishes,Ed Holleran, Matignon ’65

Message from the PrincipalThe 2015-2016 school is off to a fantastic start! We embrace our returning students and roll out the red carpet for over one hundred twenty members of the Class of 2019, the largest freshmen class in over ten years. This is an exciting time of year as we initiate two inspiring programs that are in the forefront of tomorrow’s education. It is the first year that our students and faculty take advantage of a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program. Matignon High School will also debut this year an in-spiring initiative having as its base STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) education and the birth of robotics study. Our community remains committed to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth and development of our students.

Over the recent past, Matignon High School has exhibited a refreshing energy and vibrancy that has engulfed all aspects of the school. Our administration, faculty and students are dedicated to the school motto, “Expect Excellence.” The Matignon High School Family is expected and challenged to raise their personal and academic standards and benchmarks to a higher level. This can only be achieved through cooperation and teamwork among staff, students, and parents/guardians, with everyone committed to a positive attitude and a solid work ethic. We, the Matignon High School Staff, are committed to the following principle espoused by Valerie Welk, a dynamic motivational speaker and author;

“I promise you every day your children will learn something.

Some days they’ll bring it home in their hands. Some days

they’ll bring it home in their heads. And some days they’ll

bring it home in their hearts.”

I feel very privileged, proud, and honored to serve as the Principal of Matignon High School. My goal is to make the “Matignon Experience” become the pathway for our students to maximize

their academic performance, identify their passions in life, and follow their dreams. Walt Disney, the creator of Disney World, the place where we all become children, once said “All our dreams can

come true, if you have the courage to pursue them.”

I wish for a very exciting, enlightening, successful, and blessed 2015-2016 school year for the staff, students, and families of the Matignon High School community. I would also like to extend to the Matignon High School Alumni an open invitation to return to your alma mater for a visit to reminisce about the past and explore today’s exciting world of education.

The Principal’s door is always open to our most precious and prized members of the Matignon High School Family, our students as well as our proud alumni!

With a new tradition, our future is bright

The Inaugural Tradition of Excellence Gala

was held on May 7 at the Hotel Marlowe

in Cambridge.

The Board of Trustees felt it important to begin a new tradition at Matignon. This New tradition is to honor those who have helped Matignon High School along on its journey.

We are proud and blessed to share the exciting news of a successful evening of celebration and fundraising in honor of the students of Matignon High School. Sharing the evening with us was His Eminence, Cardinal Sean P O’Malley, and O.F.M. Cap. Our gratitude is extended to His Eminence as well as everyone who made the night a huge success from our Gala Committee, generous sponsors, and Honorees: The Sloane Family and Century Bank and Coach Marty Pierce and of course all who attended especially our 2 student speakers, Mary Cara Listro’17 and Juan Gallego ’15.

The evening was a tremendous success we raised more than $220,000 for financial aid. The generosity from our sponsors and alumni was over-whelming. The Board of Trustees and the administration were elated. This truly was an incredible accomplishment for the inaugural Gala. The night can easily be summed up from the words of one of our student speakers:

“When asked, I proudly tell people I am a member of the Matignon High School Family!” — Mary Cara Listro ’17

You could sense the excitement during the cocktail hour, as hockey players from the past were reminiscing

about the championship days. Alumni from across the decades were sharing their memories and their stories about their years at Matignon. The stories were endless. It was wonderful to see the hockey players embrace their coach, Marty Pierce, while remembering the Glory days of hockey at Matignon during Coach Pierce’s tenure from 1964–2004. Our emcee of the evening was Candy O’Terry, Award-Winning Broadcaster & President; Boston Women in Media & Entertainment. Ms. O’ Terry had visited Matignon a couple of weeks before the event and was so impressed with the student tour guides and learning about the Matignon Family.

We were able to honor two great stewards of our

school with these inaugural awards:

CARDINAL CUSHING COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDThe Sloane Family & Century Bank

This ideal of service is epitomized in the recipients of the Cardinal Cushing Community Service Award, presented to the Sloane Family and Century Bank for their dedication to the Matignon family and Catholic education in Greater Boston. Marshall Sloane, born and raised in Somerville, MA, founded Century Bank in May of 1969. Over the last 46 years he, along with his children Barry and Linda, have overseen the growth of the bank to more than $3 billion in assets, while remaining one of the best and most well-known regional banks in New England. In 2010 Barry Sloane was named President and CEO, followed by Linda

Sloane Kay’s appointment to Executive Vice President in 2011. The Sloane family and Century Bank have made a tremendous impact not just in the banking world, but in the Greater Boston Community as well. The Cardinal Cushing Community Service Award is one of many accolades they have received for their commitment to Catholic education and their communities.

GREEN & GOLD LEGACY AWARDCoach Marty Pierce, Boys’ Hockey Coach 1964-2004

The first recipient of The Green and Gold Legacy Award has been affiliated with Matignon High School for over 50 years. As the Head Boys Hockey Coach for 40 years, Marty Pierce not only amassed an astounding on-ice record with 650 wins, 20 League Championships, and 10 State Titles, but an equally impressive “off-ice” record. His career, whether as Matignon High School’s Hockey Coach, or ultimately as the Fire Commissioner for the City of Boston, was devoted to mentoring the young men and women under his care and in getting them to believe in something greater than themselves.

We congratulate our honorees for being instrumental in our journey to Expect Excellence and continue the vision of Cardinal Cushing in 1949 when he laid the cornerstone of our beloved Matignon High.

However, the show was truly stolen by our two student speakers, who showed us what it means to Expect Excellence. Mary Cara Listro, a sophomore and rising star at Matignon, spoke on the importance of joining a legacy of Matignon graduates and staff members from her family. She sees Matignon not just as a wonderful education and workplace for those she calls family—but she sees Matignon as an extension of her family, a place she proudly called, “My Matignon Family.”

“One of my favorite parts of Matignon High School is the family that has devel-oped in the hallways. I believe that this is most evident in the halls after school, in the people who choose to stay and go to sports, or even to just do their home-work in the library together. It is clear we want to support one another and that we are as important to each other here as we are to our families at home.”

Juan Gallego ’15 spoke eloquently about the impact Matignon had on his life and his decision to study Political Science at Bridgewater State University this fall: “I strongly believe that I have been well prepared over the last 4 years for the upcoming challenges that I will be faced with in college, and ultimately in life. Because of Matignon High School, the faculty and the staff, the opportunities are endless.”

Juan also spoke on the value of family at Matignon, pointing to his football coach who challenged him to be the best person he could be. Coach Nalen became an important mentor for Juan, teaching him what it means to truly Expect Excellence. As Juan says, “Coach Nalen is an example of what many, if not all, our faculty and staff are for our students: How they make this a truly inspiring experience.”

Admissions NewsMatignon High School is excited to welcome the Class of 2019 to the school this September. The Class of 2019 and their families were invited to a picnic back in June on the Matignon front lawn, giving them the opportunity to meet teachers and students, sign up for fall sports, review their courses and enjoy some delicious BBQ food!

As one of the largest classes in the past 10 years,

the Class of 2019 will join the school community

creating a vibrant Matignon High School for the

2015-2016 school year.

As the fall is getting underway here at Matignon, the Admissions Department is thrilled to announce we are offering our popular High School Placement Test Prep Course again this year! This course, which will run in October, will assist over 100 eighth graders in their preparation for the Catholic High School Placement Test. Matignon High School will once again be a testing center for the test in November and December.

We look forward to inviting prospective students and families to visit us during one of our Open Houses on Thursday, October 22nd at 6:15 pm or Sunday, November 1st at 1:00 pm. Our students proudly showcase their school, teachers, curriculum and extra-curricular activities during each Open House! We also encourage prospective students to spend a day at Matignon High School with one of our student ambassadors through our Shadow Program. By participating in this program, 8th graders expe-rience our classes as well as familiarize themselves with our Matignon High School community first hand. Matignon welcomes over 200 shadow students a year!

Matignon High School will bring the Matignon experience to over 20 Catholic elementary schools with visits to 7th and 8th grade classrooms in October and November. The Admissions process will continue through the winter as we prepare to receive applications for the Class of 2020 and our Magic of Matignon Accepted Student Night on February 9th.

Acceptances of Class of 2015The Class of 2015 were accepted to the following schools. We wish them good luck and continued success as they begin the next chapter in their lives.

Faculty CornerMatignon High School would not be the school it is without its wonderful students, and those students need, teachers and staff members who guide and direct them over their four years on campus. Knowing the impact our faculty have on the lives of students, it is always with heavy hearts when we say goodbye to those who have dedicated themselves on One Matignon Road.

This year we said goodbye to a number of friends, including 5 teachers with more than 30 years in education, led by the wonderful Sheila Murphy who had been teaching at Matignon for 43 years! In addition we will also miss, and say thank you to Patricia Austin, Gail Brinley, Meghan Burns, Nicholas Coccoma, Charles Garcia, Paige Hackett, Kathryn Kenney, Marie Raduazzo, and Paul VanSteensburg.

Our new teachers have degrees from top schools and programs including Boston College, Boston University, Emmanuel, MIT, Teach for America, Tufts, and many more. In addition to their time in the classroom, these new teachers will also play active roles outside the classroom, leading our theater program, working on retreats, starting our STEM initiative and more. Calling All Alums! Career Day, Friday March 18, 2016

This upcoming year, Career Day is scheduled for Friday, March 18,

2016 from 8:00 am to 12 noon. Career Day is held every 2 years giving our students an opportu-nity to listen to our alumni from different fields. Our students

continually rave about this day and truly look forward to meeting people

like you, our alumni who sat in the very seats they sit in today. As you know any positive influence we can have in the lives of impressionable young adults is hugely important in their growth both as students and professionals.

The purpose of Career Day is to make students aware of the possibilities for their future. Matignon wishes to highlight these opportunities so that our students can find connections between what they are taught at school and the “real world.” As a participant we hope you will provide an opportunity for our students to learn about themselves and their career interests. As we all know, there is no direct path and as these students navigate and embark on the journey toward higher education or go directly into the workforce, providing guidance or clarity can make a world of difference. Please contact via email [email protected] (Fran Levas), if you are interested in participating or should you have any questions.

Please consider participating and

making a difference in our student’s

lives and future careers.

Alumni Reflections on Graduation Casey Hagerty ’11Sitting in the familiar chairs in the auditorium of Matignon, I was brought back four years ago to the last time I was there—my graduation. I tried to remember the feelings that I felt on that day: excitement and happiness, but also sadness and nervousness about leaving the comfort zone that is the Matignon Community. I wondered what the class of 2015 was thinking and could it be so different than my thoughts on that day.

This year’s graduating class was one for our entire community to be proud of. The class of 2015 proved themselves to be worthy of their hard earned diplomas. Not only was their success evident in their impressive college acceptances, but also through their spirit. Knowing some of the students personally I knew their stories of community service, struggles balancing grades and extracurricular activities and the pressure of the college application process. But as the list of colleges to which students were accepted was read—I knew the class of 2015 had achieved success.

Despite the years that have gone by, it is evident that the core values of Matignon remain strong. Academic excellence is evident in the impressive colleges that the class of 2015 has been invited to join, along with the many awards that were won by the students. Loyalty to Matignon remains evident as the class belted out the school song. The sense of community seen after the ceremony as the gradu-ates laughed, cried, and took pictures on the front lawn of the school. Although the school may have gone through physical changes in the past decade, the Matignon community values have only grown stronger through the years.

Not only was I attending the graduation as an alumni, but also a family member. As I watched my younger sister walk across the stage, I was proud that both of us were Matignon alumni. Hearing her impressive list of college acceptances made me realize that our Matignon education was a critical piece of our success. Hav-ing gone through college already, I knew that Matignon had prepared my sister well for many of the challenges that would face her. Academically, she is ready for the rigorous collegiate coursework. Socially, she has been prepared to handle many types of situations because of what she has been taught in high school.

Although the both of us may not be physically

a part of the Matignon Community anymore,

the lessons learned there will remain with us

for the rest of our lives.

ATTENTION GRADUATES OF MATIGNON
