MULTI PURPOSE TRADITIONAL BUILDING DESIGN

ABSTRACTThe main objective and motive of this particular approach in the building design is toensure facilities that the modern lifestyle demands without compromising traditionalcomfort level. In this materialistic civilization the importance of residence fordomestic, commercial and for hospital is showing upward trend which is unavoidabledue to population and changes in the lifestyle of the people. Land value and rawmaterials, labour wages for construction activities are not consistent as they arebased on demand driven market and regulating authorities are not existing to carryout such kind of infrastructure development activities. But a business in the name of'Real Estate' totally de-establishing the socio-economical balance due to increaseddemand for land and buildings. The elements in the social system should possess aresidence with respect to their state and status and the authorities should be in aposition to ensure that. The availability of land for building without compromisingagricultural and environmental needs should be ensured for all kinds of needs.Effective utilization of land and materials for construction triggers optimum usage ofland to provide space for all kinds of facilities. In addition to the facilities that theenvironment of the habitat will govern the quality of lifestyle and health. Safety andSecurity another important criteria that determines peaceful ambience within thehabitat. Provision to accommodate all kinds of modern architectural aestheticaspects and ergonomics should be considered as it promotes business value of thebuilding. The conceptual design layout of building should have the provision to meetthe requirements from all kinds of clients and should act as a skeleton frameworkwithout any major change. Based on these factors the conceptual design for multipurpose traditional building design is evolved. Structural Integrity aspect isconsidered at this stage itself to ensure safety against earthquake, but geotechnicalaspects are not discussed as it is based on the terrain nature and geology of landlocation.

INTRODUCTIONOne of the essential needs for the human being is the shelter in some form but itshould not compromise other essential needs like food and dress. This statementmay be well known even for common public but the management and engineeringperspective about the same statement triggers two different streams like resourcemanagement and design optimization. Population growth rate and changes in thelifestyle demand shelter in different form, it is unavoidable as it governs the socialsystem development and commerce. Geographical location of the land also dictatesthe type of shelter and challenges the engineering. and technology. Advancement inscience and technology could be able to face the constraints imposed by the geologyaspects of terrain, while the expertise in design will be able to solve the problemsprojected by the resource management technology to ensure sustainable growth insocial system development and commerce. Safety and security for the eleents in thesocial system also another critical factor that totally changes approach in the design.Financial resource availability for the execution of any project generally act as afactor in determining the quality of the execution in construction this may not changethe design but other factors starting from infrastructure. Lifestyle that the socialsystem prefers toward peaceful ambience directs the design to go for community

class residence. This type of residence demands different kind of infrastructure toensure the availability of essential commodities for survival. Facilities that have to beensured within the residence should be analyzed as it modifies the design anddemand for iteration. In addition to that access to basic facilities orient the designpattern in various direction. With respect to business value the design should be in afashion to accommodate the suitability for multipurpose need apart from residentialrequirements. With this kind of knowledge level and understanding the multipurposetraditional building design concept is evolved.

BASIC FACILITIESThe shelter in general refers a form of dwelling and storage place for living being andmaterials to get the protection from weather and environment. The necessity forshelter by the living being differs based on their comfort level requrement, and stateand status of the occupants, both directly governs the basic facilities that have to beensured in the building. The design of any type of building based on the availabilityand access to any kind of basic facilities. Skeleton layout itself directly reflect theavailable basic facilities and its ease of access. Ventilation for air circulation andsunlight, water resource and sanitation system, in addition to that provision forcooking arrangement are considered as the basic facilities those have to be ensuredin the building. These factors are considered as critical in the design developmentphase of any building. Geology of the terrain and geological location of the buildingshows their impact over the conceptual design as the basic facilities are strongfunction of these two major constraints that are unavoidable. Special attention shouldbe given to the sanitation facilities as it reflects the standard of lifestyle and measureof health of occupants. The type of arrangement for water resource and sanitation toensure basic facilities based on the nature of social system. Further the provision forcooking within the shelter may refer lifestyle and status, this facility is subject to theavailability of other facilities that have to be ensured during design phase itself. Typeof fuel and method of cooking also considered during the design phase as it governsthe comfort level and reflects the availability of basic facilities.

DESIGN PRINCIPLESThe design principles for any type of building generally based on type of land,substructure and superstructure along with interior requirements. The geologicalconstraints like nature of terrain and its location govern the design at its preliminarystage itself as it dictates the nature of substructure and its requirement to support thesuperstructure. The substructure usually acts as the middle man between land andsuperstructure as it has to transfer loads of the superstructure to the soil and havebear the excitation of the earth that are in the form of seismic waves. The conceptualdesign layout itself has significant impact over the substructure next to the geologicalconstraints. Both have to be iterated according to the projected requirements and toensure the structural integrity of the superstructure. With respect to superstructurethe number of floors and the layout at each floor along with staircase design, and thetype of construction materials that have been used and forwhich purpose thisbuilding is to be used will determine dead load and live load, in addition to thatgeological location impose few constraints to the superstructure like wind load,lightning, weather and environment. Basic facilities that have to be ensured withinthe building and ease of access to those facilities generally orient the arrangement ofspaces for various needs.The comfort level in any kind of building dictated not only

by the basic facilities but certainly by the provisions for ventilation, sunlight andrainfall, this kind of traditional inheritance should be ensured by the interior design.Aesthetic aspects of interior design may be related with architecture but traditionalvalues like stone masonry and moder methodologies like false ceiling, glass andwood works together govern the design aspects of building. Final outcome of anydesign task may be the numbers and decisions that give the shape and arrangementfor various facilities and infrastructure. The design in general provides anon-dimensional basis solution for any projected assignments but applicable withiincertain criteria.

ERGONOMICSThis particular concept called ergonomics mostly applicable for multistory buildingand for other type of buildings as it governs human physiological effort that thestructural design demands to reach any floor and access for basic facilities. Thestaircase design and elevator design in general considered to ensure ergonomics inaddition to that location of ventilation provisions and accessability of any thingswithin the building also comes under ergonomics. It may not be considered thatmuch critically but vital because it governs the human effort level demand fordwelling in the building. Movement of men and material from one floor to anotherfloor, and provision for the movement at each floor are the basic parameters thathave to be considered during staircase design. It has the impact over electric powerdemand and interior design, further safety related issues and implementation ofmodern methods like moving staircase elevator and the way of implementing suchdesign within the building. Structural integrity and the conceptual design layout bothhave to be reviewed based on the staircase design.

ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETICSThe perspective view of any building reflects its architectural aesthetics andappearance of any building from all directions. The appearance mostly determinesthe nature of building and its traditional inheritance, changes in the social system andits development certainly felt by the architectural aesthetic appearance. The designdetermines the shape for architectural appearance while the plastering gives thecolour, both together determines the image quality of the view from any direction.The type of masonry used in the construction determines the architectural aestheticsbaesd on the material used for masonry whether it is stone or brick and evensomething else. Based on the need, plastering may be applied over the building butthe cladding and painting over the plastering work gives the colour. Interior designalso viewed as architectural work, the kind of plastering work and colour in dwellingspaces based on its purpose of utilization as it ensures the desired ambience toprovide psychologcal comfort. Lighting system and arrangement of furniture, floortiles and carpet, cooking system, toiletries and washbasins may be the elements ininterior design but determines the lifestyle quality of the occupants. The glass shieldsand curtains, design pattern and artwork in various furniture also improve thearchitectural aesthetics. Provision for sunlight and ventilation system are the needfulelements to ensure healthy ambience but have significant role in architecturalaesthetics. The conceptual design layout should be blended with architecturalaesthetics to enhance the lifestyle quality of the haitat.

The requirements for any particular nature of utilization or purpose maydecide the conceptual design layout at preliminary design stage itself but certaincommon features that are existing among various type of residential buildings andcapability of the designer certainly elevates the design standard merits and qualitybased on its multi purpose utilization portability. This particular suitability studies aremust during the design phase itself as an iterating process because the businessand commercial value of the building is decided based on the purpose of utilization.Depreciation of any building due to age, weather and environment, in addition to thatbased on for which purpose that building was utilized generally decides presentvalue but the standard of design with respect to its portability certainly enhancesvalue of the building. Inparticular the glass panels that are usually used as the shield for sun light, wind andrain may serve its purpose and enhance the appearance but safety considerationsshould be reviewed as it is fragile and may improve emergency exit design. Peacefulambience in a residential building and protection for the materials against theft,preventive maintenance of the building are the major focuss of the security systemthat have to be considered in any type of building. To ensure movement of the menand material with an identity and to maintain necessary internal security level withinthe habitat towards to enforce internal security in the social system. The lifestylequality, attitude and capability of the security personnel should be considered withrespect to the residents and the shelter design for the security personnel shouldmeet their needs. Provision for safety and security system installation should beanalyzed during design phase itself as its accessibility and operational reliabilitygovern the safety and security in any building.

5COMMUNITYIt is must to see the development in the social system based on the kind ofresidential building that have been preferred due to the constraiñts like populationand security related issues. Due to these constraints the designer may generallyprefer the multistory building design. The lifestyle and quality of the residents andtheir requirements for survival govern the state and status of the residents, to honourtheir psychology and to ensure peaceful ambience it is must to go for communitysystem. The kind of profession that the residents carry out may be considered andthe family setup of the residents in a futuristic perspective also should be consideredduring its design phase itself to establish the community. The role and responsibilityof the residents with respect to their part in community should be well analyzed andidentified, to ensure peaceful ambience and to enforce internal security at thedesired level in the social system. The differences in the residents have to betolerated toward to establish the community and honoured also. It is impossible toform the community without the sense of respect for profession or art.

ENVIRONMENTThe traditional inheritance and architectural aesthetics along with design expertisecerainly enhance the appearance and ensure the comfort level. But the habitatshould have the better landscape as a provision for planting trees and herbs, thegreener environment and lawn certainly improves the environment. The spaciusarrangement of dwelling place only will not be able to ensure the needful ventilation,sunlight and fresh air circulation, and the protection for ground water level but thelandscape engineering principles toward to establish the environment within thehabitat definitely assures lifestyle and quality with better greenery environment. Theprotection for building against the root development of trees should be analysed andmethod of planting trees toward the protection of soil, groundwater level withoutcompromising the protection for building should be adopted. Presence of birds andpet animals certainly enhance the surrounding and changes the psychology of theresidents and atmosphere within the habitat.

ESSENTIAL RESOURCE SPACEThe weather and atmosphere will not be same throught out the year based onmonsoons whether it is summer, autumn or winter the seasonal variations will bethere in the rainfall and related agricultural yield. Starting from water resource it ismust for the residents to ensure the availability of grains and other essentialcommodities, including medicine. The space for the essential resource should beensured but it is based on the conceptual design layout. Without disturbing theenvironment and safety, security related aspects it is must for the designer to framethe layout to meet the space requirement for essential resource. Based on thegeological location and geology the availability of natural resources like water isensured within the habitat but that governs all kinds of basic facilities. Accessibility tothis resource by any means and the space for its storage is very crucial, the designfor water storage and pumping system alongwith plumbing system without alteringthe conceptual design layout is highly recommended. Further to protect and enhancethe groundwater level provision for rainwater collection system and natural soil landwithin the habitat should be accommodated. Based on method of cooking and

lifestyle quality of the residents the storage place for oil and natural gas along withother form of petroleum products including for automotives and power genertorsshould be ensured without compromising the safety and security aspects under anyccommodities. It is better to have the space for essential commodities that thecommunity demand starting from milk to any kind of food including beverages. It isunavoidable to have the provision for medical rooms and facilities towards all kindsof essential and special treatment.

POWER WATER SANITATIONThe superiority of the infrastructure is based on the electric power availability in thebuilding but based on the geological location and ease of access to the electricpower. The basic facilities dependency over electric power is unavoidable but thedemand for the same is enormous also its availability within the building is based onpower generation plant functionality and others need for the same. The comfort levelin the building is based on reliable electrical resource that is ensured by any means.Provision to accommodate the power generator towards electric power generationwithin the building depends on the kind of technology used and space availability.The conceptual design phase of any building layout determines and can alter thespace availability for solar power generation.This may be considered as the reliablepower at any location but appropriate technology should be utilized to gain themaximum benefit out of that.The positive power supply for hydraulic pumpingsystem, elevators and air-conditioning, electric cooking system, power backup forsafety and security system demands high energy power generators within thebuilding, the provision for such kind of electrical device along with safety and securitysystem should be considered separately. Utilization of water for the basic needs andother necessary facilities depend on its geological location and geology, the habitatatmosphere is based on this natural resource. Water in its purest form can beensured with the help of technology and ground water level towards this issue rainfallin the locality should be enhanced with the help of tree plantation. Free and naturalsand land should be available for rain water flow through soil, as it serves thepurpose of nourishing the trees. AUTOMOTIVE SHELTERSpace for essential commodities and resources can be ensured by the design layoutwith provisions to accommodate those commodities in the building. But thosecommodities have to be transported from their available or resourceful location to thebuilding with the help of transport systems. Movement of men and materials towardthe various needs demand automoties and shelter for that. Without disturbing thehabitat the ease of automotive movement within the habitat for handling materialsshould be ensured through pathway within the habitat. Protection for automotives

and safety against their petroleum reserve within the habitat, accessories formaintenance and operational activities should be considered during design phaseitself. The entrance and exit of the habitat design also should be reviewed to suit forthe ease of movement of automotives.

CONCLUSIONThe development in the social system is a continuing process the changes in lifestyleand habitat is highly unavoidable, certainly that will reflect the state and status of theexisting civilization but the kind of building design also reflect the impact ofpopulation, technology level and natural resource availability and utilization. Further itis a measure of peolple's capability and professionals impact those were lived in thesocial system during in that period or civilization. It is not that much easy to assignthe type of residence that the individual desethes, it is purely function of the state andstatus of the individual in the social system with respect to others. Building designcertainly express professional's approach in handling various constraints that areprojected to them by the social system. Population, economy and raw materials,technology expertise are the very basic and essential constraints that have to bereviewed and analysed. The designs are generally probabilistic in nature it should beadaptable with social system and environment. Population is that the primary factorthat dictates the type of building and its conceptual design, it imposes the constraintslike availability of land for agricultural activities and environment. Apart from designaspects it is the economy that governs the wages of labour those are involved in theconstruction activities and cost of the raw materials that are used in the constructionof building works. The technology expertise demand based on environmental changeand geology may impose constraints at certain geological locations. It is neverending process as the depreciation of the buildings due to age and environmentalimpact has to be felt over the building while the availability of raw materials should beensured in futuristic perspective. Without compromising the safety aspects ofbuilding it is must to prefer optimum utilization of raw materials and space forconstruction activities. Design should challenge the changes in social system andconstruction should express its strength against nature and environment. It is not thatmuch easy to discard any building before its life period, this factor should stand asthe backbone for multi purpose suitability of the building to avoid compromise in thebusiness value.

GROUND FLOOR

This pictorial representation provides very basic information starting from groundfloor area to provision for any kind of basic facilities that are available includingshape and size of the space and various rooms. The image itself acts as the designlayout for the building consisting all kinds of necessary information. The approachadoted in this design based on non-dimensional units, very specific dimensions willnot be discussed but size and shape along with orientation governed by thenon-dimensional units and design. As a testcase design studiy 160 * 160 unitssquare area considered for ground floor as the construction site, including thedesired and recommended open space projected by the authorities as norm. Briefdescription about total number and type of rooms that are available certainly helps tounderstand the conceptual design layout. Four security corner blocks along withtwelve servant residence are the major protective cover zone in the ground floor.

Provision for power house, pump house and eight power elevator along withstaircase for servant residence are considered in the ground floor itself as a safetymeasure. Automotive zone on either side with provision for automotive maintenanceconsidered to ensure ease of mobility and comfot. Entrance and exit consideringpeople and material movment is provided just adjacent to the security andautomotive zone. Three separate pavement for servant, resident and executive areprovided as a walking area. In addition to that natural soil zone and lawn alsoensured to protect habitat and environment. Resources that are essential for day today activities can be accommodated within the layout to ensure its availability in thesafe zone. Space for these resources may be large and have to be at ground floorwith all kinds of safety and security. Main residential building block layout consists ofvarious room and spaces for common and essential facilities. Pharmacy andphysician consulting room, medical room, saloon, garment/tailor room, and dentistroom together accommodated in the ground floor to ensure basic and essentialmedical facilities. Computer room, consulting room and library also accommodatedin the ground floor to ensure lifestyle quality and to govern the norms directed by theauthorities. Aerobics/Gym, Executive residence and executive's consulting roomtogether at one part in the ground floor itself are accommodated. Dining hall, kitchenand store room togther ensured at one part in the ground floor to ensure availabilityof essential commodities and provision for celebrations. Beauty of this layout is tosee the central elevator with ergonomics design to reach any floor and to ensuremovement of people and material safely.
