TRADITIONAL METHODS
OF PEST CONTROL
WHAT DO PESTS DO?
Pests can:- Contaminate food (droppings – bacteria)* Spoil food by eating part of it Carry disease
MAIN TYPES OF PESTS
Insects:- - Flying ( adult moths \ files & larvae ) - Crawling ( beetles \ weevils \ cockroaches ) Rodents - Mice ( field \ house ) - Rats ( roof \ Norway ) Birds - Skunks \ raccoons \ cats & dogs )
PEST INFESTATION CHECKS
Watch for droppings \ tracks - Indicate types of pest present - May lead to entry points \ nests Watch for product or container damage - Indicate types of pests present Note presence of dead pests - baits are effective
CAPTURE OR DESTRUCTION
Traps work by:- Attracting the pest - Attractants vary with pest (smell \ curiosity ) Confine the pest - Trip mechanisms \ sticky pads Kill the pest - Baits ( outside plants ) - Mechanical levers \electric current
EFFECTIVE PEST CONTROL
An effective pest control program includes: Exclusion of pests Removing food sources by good practices Controlling pests with appropriate methods Specific procedures \ records
RODENT CONTROL
Use of bait stations \traps most common Place traps inside production areas - Sticky pads for small rodents - check & empty weekly (min.) Bait stations in non-food areas - Use approved baits only - Place in secured station (seal \ lock \ strap )
BIRD CONTROL
Eliminate roosts or nesting site Minimize food sources outside of bldngs - Landscape plants can be attractive - Garbage Use netting or screens under eaves or structure open to outside
WORKING WITH CONTRACTORS
Pest control personnel must be knowledgeable \ trained \ licensed Draw up a plan for trap \ bait placement Specify reporting to be done Hold contractor accountable by verification
EMPLOYEES AND PEST CONTROL
Don’t leave garbage lying around Replace traps that are out of place Place your lunches in designated areas only Let your supervisor know if you see evidence of pests
HYGIENE AS A METHOD OF PEST CONTROL Pests can be controlled by practicing good hygiene in the following ways:- Put all rubbish into the bin. Wrap all food scrapes tightly in paper. Keep all the benches, cupboard and floors clean. Regularly clean behind stove, refrigerators and other household appliances. Keep food in containers with tight fitting lids. Use fly screens to stop pests entering the house and seal holes around pipes.
METHODS FOR PEST CONTROL
There are mainly three methods for pest control are:- Organic methods for pest control. Natural methods for pest control. Biological methods for pest control. Physical method for pest control. Mechanical methods for pest control.
ORGANIC METHODS FOR PEST CONTROL
Here the major types of products for the method of pest control are:- Floating Row Covers. Pheromone Traps. Sticky Traps. Insecticidal Soap. Oil Sprays . Bacillus Thuringiensis. Parasitic Nematodes.
NATURAL METHODS FOR PEST CONTROL.
Natural pest control is less expansive than buying and applying pesticides, and it’s safes for garden, family, the natural wildlife and the environment. The tasteful garden promotes natural pest control methods such as keeping garden clean and weeded, using mulches and good compost in the soil, and organically made pesticides only when absolutely necessary.
BIOLOGICAL METHODS FOR PEST CONTROL
Biological control is the use of natural enemies to control pests. This can be done by introducing various predatory insects or mites or parasitic wasps, or nematodes that infect the pest with a fatal bacterial disease. This technique is mainly used in greenhouses, but some biological controls, especially pathogenic nem- atodes, can also be used out of doors.
PHYSICAL METHOD FOR PEST CONTROL
Method of getting rid of insects and small rodents by removing, attacking, or setting up barriers that will prevent further destruction of one's plants. These methods are used primarily for crop growing, but some methods can be applied tohomes as well.
MECHANICAL METHODS FOR PEST CONTROL
Management and control of pests using physical means such as fences, barriers or electronic wires. It includes also weeding and change of temper-nature to control pests. Many farmers at the moment are trying to find sustainable ways to remove pests without harming the ecosystem
