Introducing the Principal

Costa Catholic Academy appoints its new Principal Mr. Steve Eisemann. Mr. Eisemann began his new post on August 1, 2014 although he has had a long time association with Costa. Mr. Eisemann attended Galesburg schools, Knox College and chose to remain in Galesburg to work and build a life. He married Rosemary Godsil in 1977 at Corpus Christi Church and have been members of the parish since. Rosemary attended St. Joseph’s Academy and Costa High School, until it closed in 1971. Mr. Eisemann began teaching science at Churchill Junior High School, moving to Galesburg High School in 1983, serving as a dean, counselor and assistant principal until he retired in 2012. He is a former member of Illinois Principals Association and Phi Delta Kappa and was selected as the 2010 Illinois Assistant Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principals Association. All four of his children attended Costa from preschool through eighth grade. Mr. Eisemann believes the solid foundation they obtained has served the boys well in high school and the girls on through college and careers. Steve and Rosemary’s children are Mary Kate (’96), Beth Ann (’98), Steven (’11) and Michael (’13). Eisemann says, “I know and understand the sacrifices that families make in order to send their children to Costa. I believe that as long as Costa can continue to provide a solid academic preparation in a faith-filled environment, it will endure. My goal is to preserve the long standing and rich traditions for which Costa is known.”

Dear Alumni;Thank you for three jubilant days! The third “All Catholic Schools Reunion” was held June 19th – 22nd, 2014 in Galesburg, IL. As in 2008 and 2011, our alumni traveled from far and wide. Theresa Bronson (1964) wandered from Seattle as did 1964 twins Don and Dan Ridings while Mike Houlihan (1966) came home from CA. The Tadie brothers came from New Jersey and VA and Dr. Judy Root (1964) journeyed from South Carolina. Southern alum, Mary Jane Loe Krapausky (1964) and Texans Mark Stiles and Steve England (both of 1968), were probably amazed at how high the Knox County corn was for the month of June. Northern graduate, Mike Hanrahan (1964) left a generous gift behind when he took his smile back north to Hoffman Estates, IL. Thursday night at Cherry Street found seventy-five to one hundred people gathered with some of the1964 GHS alumni dropping by to say hello and to also wish their Prairie Street 1964 friends a happy 50th anniversary. A reunion record of twenty-two cheerful golfers participated in the Soangetaha C.C. outing. The Knights of Columbus Hall’s one hundred and twelve attendees enjoyed the superior band and food and the impressive display of School memorabilia of which only a smidgen of the total of more than one hundred years collection which includes many of our grandparents, parents, and siblings was brought over from Costa Catholic Academy. A pleasant surprise was the beautiful flower bowls that were donated (without being sought) and delivered from The Galesburg Flower CO. Ninety six were present Saturday evening when Mary Mangieri Burgland (1964) was a delightful host at Lake Bracken C.C. And weren’t those home-made desserts yummy! It was a heartwarming gesture of Coach Jim Phelan and his wife Mary to make the round trip drive from Jacksonville, IL. He sends best wishes to his Corpus Christi students and athletes. At Sunday’s Immaculate Heart of Mary’s Mass, Deacon Rodney Gray (1964) delivered a most genuine and useful for day-to-day application sermon. The Tadie relations take the blue ribbon for having the most alumni in reunion attendance with sisters Mary Jane ‘64 and

Helen ‘66, John Peterson ’70, and the three brothers of Gene’70, Mike ‘81, and Pat ’81. Second place is awarded to the Mangieri and Stiles families. This reunion had attendance representing classmates from the 1940’s through 1981. Ed and Katie England graced us with the celebration of their 65th wedding celebration. We extend a thank you to: our three Parishes, Rev. Msgr. Pizzamiglio and the personalized help from Kathy Devlin and Julie Varga, Cherry Street Bar & Restaurant; Stan and Louella Devlin, Jodi Wood and staff of the Knights of Columbus Hall, and Kathleen DeRostyne and staff of Lake Bracken C.C. Your committee (who had only two meetings and lots of e-mails!) consisting of the following volunteers: Mary Mangieri Burgland, Chris Franz Mellish ’66, Sue Bronson Dutell ’68, Ted Pogue ’66, Greg ’66 & Sharon Mangieri, Margie Harding Calderone ’66, Mary Beth Stiles Colburn ’70, Helen Tadie Basehore ’66, Dee McMenimen Klap ’67, Joan Kisler Semande ’64, and Dan Richards ’66. Thank you to the volunteers who helped to decorate the K. of C. Hall with Don Mellish and Nadine Pogue deserving a special pat-on-the back. Susan Day, Costa Development Director, is our hero as she not only helps to ‘spread the word’ but is so kind and adept in organizing and sharing our memorabilia. Dan Richards and Ted Pogue work together, even though they are hundreds of miles apart, to keep our stable communication tool www.bunchoffriars.info up-and-running and current. If you have reunion pictures that you would like to share, please visit the site to contact Dan and Ted. Also, view the site often to read updates and view the reunion photos. We hope to see all of you in 2017 at the next All Catholic Schools Reunion when the great class of 1966 will celebrate their 50th and 51st reunion! Any class date, especially those ending in a two or a seven, are most welcome to combine your individual class reunion with the 2017 All Catholic Schools reunion; please make contact before January, 2016. Volunteers are always welcome.

The 28th Annual Costa Dinner Auction will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg, IL. Everyone is invited to support the Auction in some capacity. Great ways to help include: offer a prayer for our school to have a successful auction, attend the auction, donate an item to the auction (no gift is too small or too large), purchase a raffle ticket, be a corporate sponsor, sponsor a feature at the auction (Toast To Costa - chance to win prize with the purchase of glass of champagne), Key Club (chance to win prize with the purchase of key chain), sponsorship of drink coupon (free drink to guest), sponsor the wine at dinner (red & white are served at each table). Throughout the school year, there are fundraisers that create profit that allow the auction committee to offset their costs and at the end, this year that total is in the budget for $165,000.00. That line item in the budget is 100% applied to the operating expenses of the school. Whatever you can do to support the largest fundraiser of the school is very much appreciated!

Ryan Hickey (‘08) is studying in London this semester with the privilege of performing at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Sterling Kowalski (‘06) graduated from Knox College in June with a major in Psychology and minors in German and Business. Sterling was a member of both the Psychology and German Honor Societies at

Knox. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and was elected into the Knox chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. He began a Master of Science program at the University of Minnesota this September. The program is in the school of Public Health and is called Health Services: Research, Policy, and Administration. It is an accelerated masters, with completion in a calendar year.

4th Grade Student Jason RunbomExerpts from The Register-MailBy Mike Trueblood GALESBURG - The folks running the Junior All-City Golf Tournament this year have been encouraged by the rise in entries for this year’s event. And that quantity is coming with some quality, too. Along with the talent being shown in the older age divisions for both boys and girls, there is also some skill on display in the youngest age groups in the tourney, Jason Runbom’s first-round score at Bunker Links was first to grab the attention of clubhouse scoreboard watchers. The 9-year-old shot a 20 for the five holes played by his age group. He followed that with a 22 on Thursday at Lake Bracken, a course he had never played before. “I was surprised,” admitted the soon-to-be fourth grader at Costa Catholic Academy. Runbom, also a hockey player, has only played golf for a year. “He got started with the Hook A Kid on Golf” program at Bunker Links last year,” said his mother, Martha. “He got a free set of clubs but he got a new set this year.” He has put them to good use. A competitor in the Drive, Chip and Putt contests, he won the event in Des Moines, Iowa last weekend and qualified for a trip to Kansas City in September. Should he win there, his next stop in the contest will be Augusta National. “I like Rickie Fowler and Zach Johnson,” said Runbom of his favorite golfers. “But it’s a hard decision. “They’re both cool and I like Rickie’s clothes.”

The U.S.S. Hobson (DD-464)

In June of this year, I went to Mary Carr’s house because she had some items to donate to Costa Catholic Academy. Her brother Patrick Eugene Carr known as Gene Carr was apparently quite the athlete playing four years of basketball and four years of football for Corpus Christi High School from 1944-1948. Gene played baseball as well but it was for the city league because at that time Corpus didn’t have a baseball team of their own. Mary showed me the trophy that was presented to her brother for basketball at what she thought was for perhaps a city tournament held at the end of the season. “Awarded to Gene Carr Most Valuable Player 1944”. When Gene received that trophy he would have been a freshman in high school making him an already accomplished asset to the Corpus Christi basketball team. Presented to the school were Gene’s football jersey, letter sweater and stirrups, and the class picture. Gene’s football jersey #28 with the numbers in white satin and the jersey in a cardinal red. The lightweight jersey with no spare room for padding shows hand sewn repairs made to rips and tears which were no doubt a result of being pulled down and pushed around. Finally, among the items that had been stored for years in a suitcase, was the Corpus Christi High School Class of 1948 class composite. Included names so familiar; generation after generation of Catholics educating in Galesburg. Joann

Pryde, Edward Worden, George Barbero, Margorie Kann, Priscilla Redington, Anthony Cirimotich, Cecilia Godsil, Alice Scott, William Wendel, Margaret Wilk, Joseph Carr, Gene Carr, Marjorie Mattern, Robert Mattson, MaryEllen McNamara, Anne Kennedy, Richard Ruttgen, Philip Stablein, Gene Shea, Thomas Siebert, Richard McKillip, Patricia Moran, Joyce Soukey, Josephy Kennedy, Robert Cramer, Richard Neagle, Nolan Hurt, Lucille Reeve, Marie Polillo, William Polillo, Rosemary Cronin, Mary Leahy, Edward England, Marilyn Keefe, Nicholas Glasnovich and Patricia Welch. I asked Mary how her brothers, Joe and Gene, could be in the same graduating class. Apparently, Joe who was about a year older than Gene, had been playing on the St. Joseph’s Academy playground and injured himself extensively. Joe had fallen off the swing set and ended up in a cast from his chest down. He did recover fully but it did take him awhile to catch up because he was in a cast for so long. Joe was retained a year due to the fact he had missed so much school, thus, Joe and Gene were in the same class. I also learned that Richard McKillip and Gene were good buddies. Richard and Gene shared life together. They were from the same neighborhood, went to the same church, and attended the same school. Like many say from St. Joe, their relationship was special. Gene Carr experienced many accomplishments in his short life, read below the tragic ending:

The U.S.S. Hobson (DD-464), a Gleaves-class destroyer was built at the Charleston Navy Yard and commissioned shortly after the outbreak of WWII. During the war she saw action in North Africa, the western Atlantic, and at D-Day. Late in 1944 she was converted to a destroyer-minesweeper and reclassified DMS-26. After this conversion she saw heavy action near Okinawa, where she suffered significant casualties and damage from enemy suicide attacks. Repairs were completed after World War II and the Hobson took up duty as a destroyer-minesweeper with the Atlantic Fleet. On the night of April 26, 1952 the Hobson was a support ship for

the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Wasp (CV-18), which was conducting flight operations 700 miles west of the Azores (38 degrees 27 minutes north/41 degrees 21 minutes west). It was on its way to visit 20 different Mediterranean ports. The Wasp began a turn into the wind to prepare for aircraft recovery. The Hobson needed to maneuver to maintain its correct position in reference to the Wasp. A tragic miscalculation took place on the Hobsonbridge that night. The Hobson turned port in a maneuver that required crossing the bow of the Wasp, instead of simply falling behind the Wasp and turning in the carrier’s wake. The Hobson was struck amidships by the Wasp. The collision cut the Hobson in half. She sank in less

than five minutes. 176 of her crew were lost at sea, many asleep in their berthing compartments. 176 Casualties:[An estimated 150 crew members were sleeping when the collision occurred and the ship sank within four minutes, which is why the mortality rate was so high.]

Tom Wilson: Small turnout for Galesburg, Corpus Christi footballBy Tom Wilson The Register-Mail

Seventy-five years ago in September 1939 only 30 boys at Galesburg High School and 17 boys at Corpus Christi High showed interest in playing football. GHS coach John Gillespie was fortunate to entice three additional candidates before the home opener against Bushnell High at Lombard Field. Corpus Coach Jim Murphy was confident of fielding a capable starting eleven; however, normal practices and game substitutes would be another matter. Galesburg High proved to be ready despite the low number of available players. Returning lettermen Bob Peck and Bob Evans led GHS to a touchdown only two plays after the opening kickoff. Newcomer Bill Peck took a handoff from quarterback Lloyd Mason and passed to Bob Peck for the second touchdown. Bob Evans scored his second touchdown just as the first half ended. Don Wallace ran for the final GHS touchdown in the third quarter and then successfully kicked the extra point to give Galesburg a 25-0 victory. Corpus Christi proved it wasn’t the number of players on hand, but how the few who played performed. The Friar 17 performed well and upset a highly favored DePue team 27-0 on a daylight game played on the Knox College Willard Field. The number of players available wasn’t the only disparity between the two schools as DePue had a student body of over 700 and Corpus Christi only 100, give or take a few. The Corpus Friars displayed an effective running game and a superb passing attack. Jim Kennedy led the scoring attack with three touchdowns and an extra point conversion.

FRIAR FLASHBACK

Construction. The sounds of machinery, beeping whistles, vibrations from moving heavy

concrete, and diesel engine trucks entering and existing. Those sounds should continue

for quite some time resulting in our new addition being completed within the year.

Watching the Brother’s House/Preschool Building be torn down provided daily lunchroom

observations by students as they watched the pieces be removed in a systematic manner.

The make-shift lunch area, in the hallway facing the construction site, has actually proved

to be a great vantage for everyone at the school. Daily, we have the opportunity

watch the progress. Daily, the excitement builds. It is difficult for any of us to imagine

what it will be like to finally utilize the addition that has been for years the subject of

conservations. The smell of new! From everyone at Costa, to all of our supporters,

thank you! We are grateful for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon

us, especially the love that makes it all happen.
