MONTY PYTHON AND THEFORMAL GARDEN
“you must return here with a shrubberyor else you will never pass through this wood
alive”
Such was the task imposed on apprenticesapplying to join the ranks of “The Knights whosay Ni” who were seeking the Holy Grail.
The full significance of the shrubbery neverbecame clear but the use of the term brought backmemories of the time when an area of a gardenplanted with shrubs was an essential feature.Usually close to the house it afforded a quiet andshady spot ideal for an evening stroll or theoccasional secret assignation.
Strictly a shrub is defined as a woody plant whichis smaller than a tree and has several main stemsarising at or near the ground. Probably because ofthe popularity of shrubberies around the turn ofthe twentieth century the range of plants has beenbred until today they come in all sizes, shapes andcolours and can grow in every kind of climate orsoil. They also have the advantage of being lowmaintenance requiring only the occasional trim tokeep in shape. Even in the modern small gardenthere will always be room for one or two shrubs

to give feature and form and quite often perfumeto a sometimes neglected space.First to come to mind will always be the OldEnglish garden rose bearing a mass of flowers. Some, such as the “damask” being very stronglyscented. The blooms only last for a short time butdevelop large hips which remain on the bushes asa feature throughout the winter.
Another favourite is the mock orange(philadelphus), once known as syringa. Thevariety “Belle Etoile” has a mass of very fragrantwhite flowers, each with a pale purple base, bornein late spring and early summer.
For very early colour winter jasmine will givebright yellow flowers on leafless stems in winterand early spring or the Chinese witch hazel(hamamelis mollis) will give very fragrant goldenyellow flowers in mid to late winter and inautumn its leaves will turn to gold.
Other good standbys are the firethorn(pyracantha) which in summer can be covered ina mass of tiny white flowers which, in turn, giverise to the clusters of coloured berries beloved ofbirds, a flock of redwings can easily strip a largebush in a day!, or the barberry or berberis whichcan be covered in a mass of golden flowers – agreat attraction to bees.
These latter two shrubs are also blessed withfearsome thorns which can offer protectionagainst uninvited entry but require almost a suitof armour when pruning. This should guardagainst their being stolen by any passingapprentice Knight!

THE HUNDREDPARISHES SOCIETY
100 ADMINISTRATIVEPARISHES, INCLUDING
HATFIELD HEATH.We recently launched the
Hundred Parishes Society, an initiative to raiseawareness of a large area of northwest Essex, northeastHertfordshire and southern Cambridgeshire that isparticularly notable for its exceptional depth ofheritage. Those who live here may take our ancientcountryside and wealth of listed buildings somewhatfor granted, but visitors are usually surprised when theydiscover the charm of our villages and small markettowns and the attractive countryside in which they sit.
AIM TO BECOME AS WELL-KNOWN AS THECHILTERNS OR
CONSTABLE COUNTRY, TO CHERISH ITUntil now, the area’s anonymity has probably been duelargely to the lack of a name, so we have created onethat we hope will eventually become as well-known asthe Chilterns or Constable Country. We have called thearea the Hundred Parishes to recognise that it containsjust over 100 administrative parishes, includingHatfield Heath. Whilst the whole area enjoys arecurring set of special characteristics, each parish hasits own identity. We hope that our initiative willencourage both residents and visitors to learn moreabout the area and will inspire them to explore andcherish it.
We have launched a new websitewww.hundredparishes.org.uk to explain the idea morefully. It includes an introduction to each parish, a seriesof walks from railway stations and a short introductionto a number of notable people associated with the area. The website shows regular events and local attractionsand there is a ‘What’s On’ page that lists opportunitiesto learn more and to get to places that you may notknow.
The Society is a registered charity and the websiteincludes details of how to become a member for anominal subscription of £10 a year per family ororganisation. Whether or not you become a member,we hope you will make regular use of our website andthat it will inspire you to increase your knowledge andenjoyment of the Hundred Parishes.

White-clawed CrayfishAustropotamobius pallipes
The white-clawed crayfish is the largest nativefreshwater crustacean species. It is being severelyaffected by the non-native signal crayfish. Theyhave pinkish-white claws and a pitted appearanceranging in colour from brown to olive. Beingpredominantly nocturnal and partial to hiding increvices, this species is particularly hard to find.
Conservation statusWhite clawed crayfish are protected by the Wildlifeand Countryside Act and the Countryside Rights ofWay (CROW) Act. This means that a speciallicence is required from Natural England to surveyfor crayfish or to use crayfish traps. A Norfolk Biodiversity Action Plan has been drafted by theEnvironment Agency.
Our native crayfish have been severely affected bythe introduction of the non-native signal crayfish. The signal crayfish was introduced to this country inthe early 1980’s for farming and commercial aquaculture, but unfortunately many escaped and enteredour water courses. Signal crayfish grow up to twicethe size of white-clawed crayfish and are highlyaggressive, therefore out competing the smaller andretiring native species by predation and directcompetition for food.
Some non-native crayfish can carry a fungus(Aphanomyces astaci) commonly known as crayfishplague, which does not affect them but can be lethalfor our native crayfish. Local warnings have beengiven to all water users in the River Waveney arearegarding this crayfish plague following a recentoutbreak. The Environment Agency is advising thepublic to clean any equipment with disinfectant, bleach or anti-fungicidal products

TAYLORS FIELDRICH AREA FOR WILD LIFE
Dear Bruno,No doubt there is dog mess and rubbish dumpedin Taylors field. But it is by far the richest area for wild life allaround Hatfield Heath until you reach HatfieldForest. So if you want to go bird watching, sight adeer, a weasel or a badger ----go to Taylors field. With our monoculture so devoid of life such areasas Taylors field are tremendously important aswild life havens or refuge. So what would seem tosome as waste land or scrub, the field is thevillage`s richest wild life area which until now canbe enjoyed by the natural world and those of usliving here.Yours sincerely,Michael Ronan

The main water supply in Hatfield Heath did notextend to the Chapel in 1921, and water at the Chapelschool was obtained by the pupils, myself included, from a pump in a small washroom at the rear of theschool. I and some other children contracteddiphtheria and the source of the infection wasattributed to the water supply being close to thechapel burial ground.
A brief reference to the disposal of sewage willsuffice. The bucket in the little house outside wasusually emptied into a hole dug in one's garden, andmy father gave an old gentleman half an ounce oftwist tobacco to undertake the task. In those daysmany of the older generation were addicted tochewing twist, which resulted in very brown teeth.
Prior to 1919 my father and mother made deliveriesfrom Buck's Stores by pony and trap or bicycle, butduring that year the first car arrived on the Heath. This was a Ford and it had taken 12 months to arrivedirectly from America to my father, and the cost wasabout £360 plus £5 for a spare wheel. Mr AlbertHockley liked the look of it and promptly ordered onefor himself.
Buck's Stores was founded by my parents in 1912when they came from Tottenham to live at the Heath. At that time a Miss Smith lived in the cottage, as itwas then, and sold odd things such as fruit and sweetsfrom the cottage window. The first shop opened bymy family was small and if half a dozen customerscame in, the place was overcrowded. Takings weremeagre and the early cash books showed that theywere often no more than a few shillings a day. Iarrived on the scene in 1912, being born in a bedroomover the shop bordering on “the Stag”. Times werehard during the 1914-18 war and I understand mymother had me bathed, dressed, fed and wateredbefore 6.00 am each day. My father cycled toSawbridgeworth station at that hour, to fetch thenewspapers, sometimes after having worked all nightat Harlow, acting as a stretcher-bearer carrying thewounded soldiers from the train to the hospital.
No holiday was possible for the first seven years, andthe only free days during the year were ChristmasDay and Good Friday, the only days whennewspapers were not published. My father andmother refused to open for Sunday papers as that wasconsidered to be God's day of rest. How times havechanged!

The tale was told of the young men of the villagewho wondered how they were to obtain their sweetsto eat in Bible Class on Sunday afternoons with theshop closed. My father told them in no uncertainterms, that the shop was open until 11.00 pm on theSaturday and therefore they had plenty of time tomake their purchases then. Mr Rook of “Oaklands”run the Bible Class in those days.
Many other tales could be told, but a whole bookwould be needed. It is sometimes said that one shouldnot live in the past, but much wisdom can be obtainedfrom past experiences, and to ignore history would befolly.

45% OF YOUR WASTE GOES TOLANDFILL… PLEASE DO YOUR
BIT TO HELP REDUCE THISRecycling mattersUttlesford District Council is pleased to berecognised as one of the best performing councilsfor recycling in the country – but there is still farmore we can do.Total waste per household is on the increase andrecycling rates are reducing. In Uttlesford wethrow away, into our black bin, on average 45% ofall the waste we produce.Landfill costs are currently £80 a tonne and due toincrease further annually. So every tonne that isdiverted from landfill delivers a saving. What can you do to help?
· Try to buy goods with as little packagingas possible.
· Reuse anything you can. Items such aswater bottles and glass jars can be reusedfor water and jam making. Old t-shirts canbe turned into dusters and good clothes/books/ curtains donated to local charityshops or collections. Your local vet maywelcome old towels and sheets.
· Ensure that the ‘largest bin’ in yourkitchen is the recycling bin, headed forthe green-lidded wheeled bin – into thisshould go clean glass bottles and jars, paper, newspaper, cardboard, tins anddrink cans, plastic bottles and foodcontainers. Additional waste can be left ina cardboard box or clear carrier/plastic bagnext to your bin and will be collected. Please do not use black bags.If your bin is always full to overflowing, please contact the council to discussadditional bin capacity.
· Put peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, dead pot plants and flowers – should younot wish to compost them – into the

FLIGHT DIVERSIONOVER HATFIELD HEATH &
EARLY FLIGHTSDear BrunoRe: Flight diversion over Hatfield Heath
I am writing to see whether we can, as a group, through our Village Magazine, form some sort ofpetition to protest against the appalling, unacceptable noise we are experiencing due to theflight diversion of planes from Stansted (i.e. theClacton route). I am sure it cannot only be me andmy husband who are being woken up every morningat 6am by low flying noisy aircraft which continueson and off all day and into the night.
NATS proposal stating that the Clacton and Doverflight paths do not diverge significantly until afterpassing Hatfield Heath is a lie. These flights godirectly over the Heath from 6am every morning atintervals of 3 minutes or less. Bob Jones is rightwhen he says that there have been no consultationswith local communities. I wonder why!!
I have tried, through the links given in the VillageMagazine, to respond against the increased noiseand pollution but I get so far and then I am blockedfrom sending my response. Is anyone else havingthis problem?
I dread to think what will happen if and whenStansted reaches its potential. Again, Bob Jones isright, we have to act now to stop this unacceptablenoise level.Yours sincerelyEve Mosch

SSE SUPPORTS CALL TO TAKE PART INFLIGHT PATH CONSULTATION
Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) welcomes NATS'call to local residents to have their say and respondto the proposed transfer of traffic on departureroutes from Stansted Airport. The proposed changeinvolves switching daytime traffic from theexisting south-east (Dover) departure route to theexisting east (Clacton) route. The consultationcloses on 8th September.NATS says that the proposed change would resultin reduced CO2 emissions and reduced delays forStansted and other airports. SSE has calculated thatthe reduction in CO2 emissions would be less than1% and an even smaller percentage if long haulroutes came to Stansted. For delays, NATS'performance in 2012 was the best on record withAir Traffic Control (ATC) delays averaging just1.6 seconds per flight.Traffic on the Clacton route would double ifthis proposal were implemented and, accordingto NATS' own figures, for local communitiesliving around the airport, 1,470 fewer peoplewould be overflown, but 2,400 people would beoverflown more intensively. NATS says that thedriver for change is network performance and toavoid Heathrow traffic congestion. This currentlykeeps Stansted's southbound Dover traffic lower inthe south of Essex, the Thames Estuary andsometimes well into Kent.SSE also draws attention to the fact that significantchanges to Stansted's airspace are likely to come inthe next airspace review phase scheduled for2018/19. Additionally the Government is expectedto decide next year on a further runway in theSouth East. These developments are anticipated toinvolve a significant redesign of Stansted routesincluding improved noise reduction proceduressuch as Continuous Descent Approach.SSE urged caution when this NATS consultationwas launched in mid-June and said that there mustbe clear and compelling benefits for local residentsbefore any changes are implemented.Peter Sanders, SSE's Chairman, says "SSE is notconvinced that these conditions have been met andwe recommend that NATS' proposed changesshould be postponed until they can be assessed in

Fire Fighting in Essex during theGreat War
by Mick Ford
An Essex Fire Brigade and Rescue Volunteer, MickFord, gave a graphic account of the part which the EssexFire Brigade played in the Great War. A reverse chronology provided details of the changesthat have occurred from current practice to earlier Bri-gades. A range of dispirit local sources, insurance com-panies and privately run operations provided fire coverbut none were centralised until the Fire Services Act of1947. Following a general introduction Mick concentrated onWW1 interspersing his talk with a series of slides show-ing a range of appliances, fire stations and their architec-ture with a supporting presentation of 3D models andhelmets. Initially attacks by Zeppelin and Gotha bomb-ers were described with reference to significant individ-uals. Numerous attacks by both types demonstratedhow air war fair was being developed by the Germans.Indiscriminate use of maroons prompted a change inwarning systems resulting in the use of sirens. It becameapparent that with numerous attacks coordination on agreater scale was needed to effectively defend againstbombing. Brigadier Ashmore was responsible for creat-ing the Metropolitan Observation Service which laterbecame the Royal Observer Corp in 1925.

Throughout the talk a clear indication of the workwhich the Fire Brigade was engaged upon over variousCounties, Towns and Villages. Some descriptions alsoadded humour to the evening. The Gotha aircraft was an unknown factor to theEnglish and an attempt to capture one intact was apriority. When one was brought down by antiaircraftfire it remained largely intact and with its cargo ofincendiary bombs. However one man approaching ac-cidently discharged a Very pistol and set light to theprize . . . a large bang!!! The ‘Cloud Car’ on the Zeppelin was also a cause ofamusement. If the cloud base obscured the means tonavigate from the ground a ‘Cloud Car’ was lowered toenable visual ground contact. No lack of volunteers forthe task as it provided a smoking opportunity for thelucky person. After the Gotha raids towards the end of the war camethe Straaken RVI which was a four engine plane with awing span of 42.2 metres. Just short of a Boeing SuperFortressfrom WW2 aptly named ‘Giant’. Issues of the War and Brigade recruitment werecovered and there were predominantly two main fac-tors which created cause and effect. 1. Less Men avail-able as they were conscripted to the front and 2. Horses. In one Village the Fire Brigade had none so that if a fireoccurred on a farm the Farmer provided his own horse!! In conclusion there is recognition that what happenedin WW1 had a clear relevance to WW2 for planning, organization, innovation and radical approaches. Thanks to Mick for an interesting and informativeevening.

They left behind cuttings from trees and bushes they had probably cut from gardens ofpeople who had given them jobs in the area. The household waste went almost continuouslyfrom one end of the field to the other, you name it, mattresses etc and when that was clearedthe fumigating team had to come to clear the human and animal faeces left behind .
