Question 1: In what ways did

your media project develop,

challenge or use conventions of real media products?

What conventions of the horror

genre did I follow? I noticed that many horror trailers do not reveal the killers identity. I followed this convention by

using a mask. This helped my trailer to retain a mysterious atmosphere while rendering the killer

emotionless, making him seem more in-human. It also makes it difficult for the audience to relate

to the killer.

I have used low angle shots to make the killer seem powerful, and the victim seem vulnerable. This gives a feeling of helplessness and fragility.

What conventions of the horror

genre did I follow? Using a high angle shot, I have made the audience perceive the teenagers as vulnerable. This is

the way I wanted to represent the victims, which is conventional to the horror genre. They are also

walking on a narrow path which gives a more claustrophobic atmosphere and feelings of

entrapment.

I have used alcohol to represent the stereotype of adolescents and the binge drinking culture. This

is not specific to the horror genre but I have noticed it being used in some horror trailers and over

a wide range of genres. It is the typical representation on youth. Alcohol generally makes people

less coherent and therefore more defenceless which is how I was aiming to represent the victims. Here is an example of alcohol use in Friday 13th.

What conventions of the horror

genre did I follow? When the victim is first in the presence of the killer this needs to be done with subtlety to build

tension. The victim is shown as unaware of this presence to create feelings of anxiety.

What conventions of the horror

genre did I follow? I have used a title similar to that off of µThe Strangers¶. Horror genres tend to use titles instead of a

voice over to make it easy to retain this at first quite peaceful but menacing atmosphere. I placed

my title at a point where the equilibrium of my trailer is just starting to build to its climax, as this is

where my trailer is at its slowest pace. I believe that titles are best used at this point in horror

trailers. I don¶t think titles are incredibly effective when the trailer is at its most intense because

they slow the pace down. My title was used to set the mood and overall mise-en-scene of the

trailer, engaging the audience as they read. I also used a background to help the creepy mise-en-scene take effect. I felt a black background was too plain and un-interesting.

What conventions of the horror

genre did I follow? After the break in equilibrium, I have used various dramatic images and changed the speed of the

edits between clips to show the change in pace that the music also displays. This gives frantic and

intense feelings to the audience, retaining their attention. Trailers I have studied such as µThe

Nightmare on Elm Street¶ and µThe Strangers¶ show a similar convention.

What conventions of the horror

genre did I follow? In my poster I have used the location of the church as the main picture. This is because the

location is often shown as important in horror trailers with establishing shots. It also relates with

the title µThe Last Burying¶ as being buried is associated with a church and graveyard, and this is

one of the main aspects of my trailer. The title also further relates to the location as the word

µBurying¶ has been faded at the bottom to give the appearance that the title is being buried. I have

used a dark background that creates the spooky atmosphere I was looking for, this is common of

horror movie posters.

In horror posters that I have analysed, the title always relates to the picture. For example in the

µOne Missed Call¶ poster the killer is holding a mobile phone. Also on the µLast House On The Left¶

poster, the location is important and relates to the title, so the house is displayed on the poster .Also the background is very dark to create a conventionally scary atmosphere.

What conventions of the horror

genre did I subvert? Instead of starting with a few typical establishing shots that I have noticed is commonly used in

the horror genre, I have placed the establishing shots of my trailer after the title.

I did this because I felt it was quite a boring start to the trailer and it doesn¶t really grab the

audiences¶ attention. I replaced the conventional establishing shots to start with a POV shot of a

victim running from the killer. I believe this is a more exciting start to the trailer, establishing thethreatening atmosphere more as the victim falls, and opens their eyes with a view of the villain.

What conventions of the horror

genre did I subvert? I have noticed that many horror trailers including examples such as µThe Strangers¶ use the

sounds from inanimate objects to create tension and fear. Objects such as the swing set and the

door banging have been used here. I have not followed this convention as I feel the music is a big

influence and is a powerful enough contribution to the mise-en-scene I was aiming for. I think the

addition of extra sounds would have ruined the build up and tension that the music creates. Sound

effects, in this case would not be effective.

What conventions of the horror

genre did I subvert? I subverted the conventional use of an eye catching background. This is because on my first

poster attempt I felt the use of an imposed background looked rather unprofessional and tacky.

Instead, I used a plain black background as I feel this helps with the atmosphere I was looking for

to relate to the horror genre.
