What did you enjoy about the trailer?

From this question we saw that our audience enjoyed the trailer overall, but saw particular praise for our self-produced soundtrack and the high quality of the editing. The location, mostly Brownsover Hall

Hotel in Rugby, was well received as the contrast between its gothic interior and the modern household interior from the opening of the trailer was highlighted by the audience. They also felt that we had a

good mix of camera angles which produced high quality shots, such as our framed shot of the characters walking up the hotel stairs, this all combined to keep the audience engaged in the trailer and

hooked until the final jump scare.

Which parts of the trailer, if any, scared you?

From question two we had to tally some of the answers which resulted in a tie for the scariest moment in the trailer between the soundtrack of the trailer and Rose herself. This is a good thing as it means that there is no singular aspect which stands out above all others, and that everything in our trailer serves a purpose as opposed to just one. A particular scene that was picked out for its horror is the

scene where Michael enters a room with Rose stood behind the door, which was edited with quick jump cuts (also something that was noticed) to build up to the final jump scare of Michael being dragged of-

screen.

Explain your favourite part of the trailer.

Similarly to question two, the highlight of the entire trailer was a tie in votes between the ending of the trailer and the edited build-up to the final jump scare, both of these link together to show that the end

of our trailer is very well edited. Again there was praise for the soundtrack throughout the trailer as well as the second mention of the scene where Michael walks into the room with Rose, the repeated

appearance of these answers highlights the fact that they are two very strong aspects of our trailer.

What do you think the story of the film will be?

The general opinion of the audience from this question was that ‘Rose’ will be about either the outcome of Greg and Michael or the story of Rose and what happened to her. There was also a suggestion that

the film could go into slasher territory and be about torture while some believed that it would be about the history of the house itself rather than any of the characters.

As shown in the table above the worst performing part of our trailer was thought to be the location, however it received six five-star reviews which was the second highest of any aspect of the trailer. The

highest scored aspect of the trailer was the sound which received seven five-star ratings and seven four-stars, this is jointly followed by the camera shots and the character aspects which both had eleven

ratings in the 4-5 star categories.

Again with this question there was reference to the music soundtrack of our trailer, with nine people thinking it sounded professional enough to be in a real movie trailer, there was also praise for the font

and shot choice which both received three mentions for their professionalism.

The conventions of a paranormal antagonist, creepy font and music were all picked up a large amount of times by the audience who felt that they were effectively utilised in the trailer. They also felt that the use of Brownsover Hall Hotel was a very effective location for the trailer, while the creation of suspense

was picked up by some as also being effectively utilised in ‘Rose’.

dispute that maybe too much is given away early on in regards to the murder that the male characters research into.

From our characterisation of the two teenage boys people believed that they were just normal teens, as suggested by the scene of them playing Fifa together. Our stereotypical portrayal of Rose as a girl in

white with black hair was also seen by member of the audience as being scary.

Can you give the trailer an overall star rating out of 1-5?

Overall the trailer for ‘Rose’ was very well received as it narrowly missed out on getting mostly 5 star ratings, but with over 50% of people saying it’s a four-star trailer we know that we could still improve. Some critique we received including the possibility that the trailer revealed too much while there was

also the point of no character development of any of the characters being shown throughout the trailer.

The vast majority of the audience had praise for the font used on “ROSE” which matches the font used on the poster and the trailer. There was also mention towards the professional look of the cover, which we had heavily

researched and planned with sketches, as well as the image of Rose herself which was taken on-scene during the Brownsover Hall shoot.

What would you improve about the magazine?

For this there were quite a few suggestions with the biggest one being the idea of removing Rose from the cover and featuring another character in her place, maybe Greg or Michael. Other suggestions included darkening the background, repositioning the word “Horror” on the “L” and zooming closer the Roses face so that her blank expression can be emphasised.

Our choice to have the image of Rose centralised and overlapping the masthead while there was another mention for the font of “ROSE”. The

audience also picked up on our inclusion of buzz words such as “BONUS!” and the barcode in the bottom right corner for professional reasons.

Overall our audience thought that the combination of the main image and text was very effective as they saw their attention get drawn to the main

image of Rose due to its size and placement, while the font stands out due to its size and colour.

The layout of the cover was seen to be “Nice” by five members of the audience due to its professional appearance and the fact that it is very

clear and structured. However there was a critique of the text on the right being too close to the edge of the cover.

From looking at the cover the majority of the audience were able to deduce that it is for a horror film, while others picked up on the presence of a mysterious character who might be after revenge. It reportedly gave

some the connection to Paranormal Activity due to its styling.

From this question the audience made the connection between our three products that they use the same font for the “ROSE” title and that there is

From observing the poster, the audience highlighted a liking for the contrast between the red and the dark background, they also felt that the

design was simple but effective enough to suit its purpose. Equally the tagline was highlighted as being intriguing due to its vagueness.

From this critique/improvement question we were given suggestions such as replacing the shadow of the rose with a shadow of Rose in order to link

her across all products. We were also advised by some members to lighten the background to make the title more readable.

It was thought that this product was merely a teaser trailer as very little was revealed, although the genre was believed to be clearly given away as a horror despite this. The social media links and language use were all

seen to add to its professional presentation.

As the poster gives little away, this question garnered several different answers. Some people thought that ‘Rose’ might be about love, while some people saw it as a poster for a mystery film. However the overall

genre of horror was seen in many answers.

The jaggedness of the title font was thought to go well with the title ‘ROSE’ and was thought to have been effectively used to reflect the

horror genre and, according to some, suggest that the film is a mystery film.

The title ‘ROSE’ suggested, correctly, to some members of the audience that one of the characters is called Rose, while some felt that the plain layout of the poster conveyed suspense. This is good as it is two of the

main things we wanted the audience to pick up on.

This question gave mostly negative responses from our audience as they thought that the background of the poster was too dark, thus making the text and title difficult to read. Some also felt that the image of the rose

wasn’t clear enough and that the poster itself was difficult to see. However this could be a result of the board that it was projected onto.
