TRAINTRAIN RIDESRIDES

Year-round historic steam train

excursions through the remote Rocky

Mountains of Southwest Colorado.

Durango, CODurango, CO 2009 ~ 20102009 ~ 2010

All Aboard! Take a ride on an historic, coal-fired, steam-powered train through the

backcountry wilderness of the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado and relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear.

The Denver & Rio Grande Railway arrived in

Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line began in the fall of

that same year. By July of 1882 (just nine months after

construction began) the tracks to Silverton were completed.

The line was constructed to haul silver and gold ore from the mountains, but

passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly

precious. This scenic line has been in continuous operation ever since.

MuseumsLearn about the railroad’s colorful history by visiting the D&SNGRR Museum in the Durango rail yard, (open year-round except early November), or the Silverton freight yard Museum from May ~ October. Admission to both museums is included in the price of train tickets.

Gift ShopsThe Durango depot gift shops offer a wide array of unique gift items, apparel and beverages. Visit our Web site for online shopping options.

Parking The railroad parking lot is located next to the rail yard at the corner of U.S. Hwy 550 and College Drive. Parking is $7.00 per day for

passenger cars and $9.00 per day for RVs. You will need to pay for each day your car occupies the lot.

Motor Coach/Train Combo Enjoy one leg of your Silverton journey onboard a D&SNGRR motor coach as you travel along 52 miles of the San Juan Scenic Byway. This option offers you a different perspective of the majestic mountains and reduces your travel time by up to two hours. Limited seating – book early! Add a motor coach transfer to your Presidential or First-Class excursion at no additional charge. Additional charges apply to Deluxe and Standard-Class excursions. (See Bill of Fare pg 5)

Locomotive & Motor Car RidesExperience a day in the life of a steam engineer and fireman in the cab of a locomotive or ride the rails with a Maintenance of Way crew member in a motorized track car. You will be issued the official D&SNGRR attire for your excursion and then it’s yours to keep. Call (970) 259-3372 for more information.

Private Car & Train Charters Charter a single coach, a vintage first- class private car or an entire train for your next special event. Charter train groups can utilize the Cascade Pavilion located deep in the heart of the San Juan National Forest along the banks of the Animas River. This outdoor pavilion is an idyllic mountain setting for a catered sit-down dinner, wedding, casual picnic, family reunion or company outing. Call (970) 259-3372 for more information.
