Introduction

Welcome to the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Exercise to Music). In this course you are required to gather evidence which demonstrates you meet the criteria as set out by Skills Active in the National Occupational Standards. These standards were compiled by employers and list the skills required for a fitness instructor teaching group exercise to music. You will collect the evidence required throughout the course and while preparing and delivering your practical assessment.

This document contains explanations and all the forms you need. To assist you in keeping all documentation together we recommend placing this document and all your evidence in a bound folder or ring binder. Please do not use plastic wallets in your folder. As you collect each piece of evidence, place it in the appropriate section and mark it off on the Learner Achievement Portfolio Checklist as you go.

If you wish to gain feedback for any part of your portfolio, please send copies i.e. not originals, to the Head Office at the address listed below. Alternatively, email your work to [email protected]. Please ensure that all documents that require feedback are submitted at least 2 weeks before the assessment date. Your work will be allocated to a tutor who will place your feedback on the learner help desk. You may send in all areas of the portfolio for feedback prior to the assessment. On receiving feedback please place a copy in your portfolio along with your original piece of evidence.

Before submitting your portfolio for either feedback or final assessment, make sure you have entered your user name at the top of every page then sign and date every page where required. Then bring the portfolio with you to your practical assessment or send it in with your video assessment.

Assessment Details

The Level 2 Certificate in Group Exercise to Music consists of 6 units. You must pass all units to gain your qualification.

� Unit 2.1 – Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise � Unit 2.2 – Know how to Support Clients who take part in Exercise and Physical Activity � Unit 2.3 – Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment � Unit 2.4 – Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health � Unit 2.5 – Planning Group Exercise to Music � Unit 2.6 – Instructing Group Exercise to Music

You must attend a minimum of 1 assessment day for this qualification. Unit 2.1 Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise Assessment Details

To achieve this unit you will sit an invigilated, 40 question, multiple choice theory paper on the following -

� The Structure and Function of the Circulatory System � The Structure and Function of the Respiratory System � The Structure and Function of the Skeleton and Joints � The Structure and function of the muscular system � The Life course of Musculoskeletal System and its Implication for Special Populations Exercise � The Energy Systems and their Relation to Exercise � The Nervous System and it’s Relation to Exercises

The paper is set and marked by the awarding body and you will need a minimum mark of 70% (28/40) to pass. Please allow up to 21 days after your assessment for your results. Please bring a black pen to complete the exam paper.

Unit 2.2 Know how to Support Clients who take part in Exercise and Physical Activity Assessment Details

This unit is assessed via a worksheet comprising of 19 short answer questions about the following:-

� Developing effective working relationships � Addressing barriers to exercise with clients

� Exercise adherence � Providing customer service

The worksheet can be found later in this LAP. You must achieve 100% and answer all of the questions correctly to pass. Complete this worksheet once you have completed the online theory module for Unit 2.2. Place your completed worksheet in your LAP for marking. The worksheet will be marked on or before the practical assessment day.

Unit 2.3 Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment Assessment Details

This unit is assessed via a worksheet comprising of 21 short answer questions about the following:-

� Emergency procedures � Health and safety

� Risk assessment � Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults

The worksheet can be found later in this LAP. You must achieve 100% and answer all of the questions correctly to pass. Complete this worksheet once you have completed the online theory module for Unit 2.3. Place your completed worksheet in your LAP for marking. Unit 2.4 Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health Assessment Details

This unit is assessed via a theory paper consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions. The paper will be on the following subjects covered in your online theory –

� The effects of exercise on the body � The components of fitness � How to apply the principles and variables of fitness to an exercise programme � The contraindications and key safety guidelines for special populations � How to safely monitor exercise intensity � The health benefits of physical activity � The importance of healthy eating

The paper is set and marked by the awarding body and you will need a minimum mark of 70% (28/40) to pass. Please allow up to 21 days after your assessment for your results. Please bring a black pen to complete the exam paper.

Unit 2.5 Planning Group Exercises to Music Sessions Assessment Details

The assessment for this unit is comprised of 4 parts-

� Planning Exercise to Music Sessions worksheet � PAR-Q and Informed Consent

� Session Overview � Class Plan

To achieve Unit 2.5 planning group exercise to music you are required to complete the planning worksheet and produce a session overview and appropriate note/planning for a safe and effective exercise to music session based on the jump fx and blast fx releases. If you are doing the diploma option, you will also include stomp fx, groove fx and pump fx in your plan. The exercise to music session will be 45 minutes long and appropriate for a specific target group of healthy adults. You will find the relevant forms further on in the portfolio.

Planning Worksheet

You are required to complete the 2.5 Planning Exercise to Music Sessions Worksheet which you will find later in this LAP. You must answer all questions. You must gain 100% to pass.

PAR-Q

You will need to complete the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q), included in this LAP, for each participant. Please complete the PAR-Q on the morning of your assessment.

NB – A PAR-Q needs to be provided for both yourself (the learner) and your participants.

The Session Overview

You are to complete a session overview which takes into account:

The Register of Exercise Professionals’ Code of Ethical Practice and ensures equal opportunities are reflected during the exercise session.

The health and safety considerations that are relevant to the planned activities within the teaching environment. You must pay special attention to manual handling, safe placement and positioning of equipment, mats and the music system.

You are required to complete the following information on the session overview:

� Location of the first aid kit in the environment you will be teaching � The name of the qualified first aider at the venue you will be teaching � The duration of the session � The session aim - give detail on the agreed goal, any barriers to exercise that have been suggested by the participants and what you aim to achieve in the session. � The objectives – give detail on how you will achieve the aim and agreed goals and overcome any suggested barriers. � The anticipated fitness level of your participants � The anticipated skill level of your participants � You are to make checks on the participant’s footwear, clothing and accessories (jewellery etc) making sure it is appropriate for the session � Give indication on any specific considerations that need to be made that relate to the participants needs � Give detail on equipment that is to be used e.g. mats, dumbbells etc � Give detail on checks made regarding the equipment e.g. mats are torn � Give detail of the person you will notify regarding equipment arrangements e.g. duty manager/ studio coordinator � Health and safety checks and any other arrangements made relative to the:

� Environment � Participants � Fire exits � Temperature /Ventilation � Water availability

� Floor � Obstacles � Plus any other relevant information

If you are doing the certificate option, you are required to complete a class plan based on the following fx tracks -

� Reflects current good practice that is safe and appropriate for the participants needs � Shows relevant teaching points � Contains appropriate alternatives and progressions of exercises in each component that take account of the types of special requirements that participants may have � Records information collected verbally and details appropriate advice based on this and other information collected, specifying any reason for temporary deferral of exercise or referral � Provides information on the music selected, to include speed (beats per minute) � A warm up including CV and stretches � Aerobic choreography � Body conditioning/MSE � Cool down component including CV and stretches (A minimum of 1 stretch should be a developmental stretch which you will need to add to your cool down routine)

You class plan will come from the fitness fx choreography notes. You must copy these and add teaching points, alternatives, progressions and modifications, suitable to your class size and ability.

The Warm UpThe following detail is required when planning your warm up (jump fx track 1). This should be written on the Exercise to Music class plan:

For at least one track you must include a music breakdown and list the way the exercises reflect the beat, phrase and structure of the music. Please refer to the programme choreography notes found on the TRAINFITNESS App for the full breakdown.

Cool down component

The following detail is required when planning your cool down component (jump fx Track 10):

� The names of the flexibility exercises � At least one developmental stretch - draw stick men showing the muscle stretched � Indication on the length of time the stretch is held � Name of music with bpms and music mapping

� Choreography which is appropriate for the cool down � Teaching points � Progressions and alternatives The forms that you required to complete unit 2.5 can be

found further on in the portfolio. You will need to photocopy the session plan form to give you the number of pages you require to plan your session.

Unit 2.6 Instructing Group Exercise to Music Sessions Assessment Details

The assessment for this unit is comprised of 3 parts

1. Observed Summative Assessment2. Reflecting on Exercise to Music- Self Evaluation3. Instructing Exercise to Music Worksheet To complete unit 2.6 Group Exercise to Music session you are required to instruct a group of healthy participants. There must be a minimum of (at least) 6 participants in the class.

In order for your clients to participate in your practical assessment they must be apparently healthy adults and meet the criteria below:

� Be aged between 16 or over (male or female participant) � Must have completed a Train Fitness PAR-Q and answered ‘no’ to every question other than questions 12, 13 and 14. If a client answers yes to one or all of these they can still participate in the session � Must not have any concerns about their health Therefore please ensure that you thoroughly screen your clients for their suitability to participate in your practical assessment prior to selecting them. You will need to complete the PAR-Q and Informed Consent form contained within this document with your clients before commencing your assessment.

NB. You are required to take 3 participants with you for your practical assessment and bring your music with you.

If you are doing the certificate option, you are required to complete a class plan based on the following fitness fx tracks -

Observed Assessment

An assessor will observe you instructing the group exercise to music session which you have planned on the session plans. The criteria under which you will be assessed can be found in the Summative Observation Checklist in this LAP. You must demonstrate competency in all areas.

You will need to demonstrate instruction on the following:

� Warm up (Including CV and stretches) � Aerobic Component � Body Conditioning /MSE � Cool Down

NB: You must include a minimum of 1 developmental stretch in your cool down You must prepare the session to teach and you are required to:

1. Prepare yourself to teach the session2. Welcome the participants and make them feel welcome and at ease3. Verbally advise the participants of the facility’s emergency procedure4. Check the participants’ level of experience, ability5. Check the participants’ physical/medical conditions and record any information given to you6. Provide safe and appropriate equipment sufficient for the participants7. Organise sufficient space for safe exercise performance8. Explain the purpose and value of the session including its physical demands9. Confirm or revise the session overview as appropriate (this will have been completed in unit 2.5) When teaching the session you must meet the following in all areas of the practical assessment, the warm up, the chosen main component and the cool down:

1. Give explanations and/or demonstrations that are technically correct2. Communicate appropriately to the participants’ needs and the environment3. Adopt appropriate positions to observe the participants and respond to their needs4. Use volume, pitch and voice projection relative to the music, with or without a microphone

Follow the correct procedures for checking and dealing with any equipment used7. Leave the environment in a condition acceptable for future use Reflecting on Exercise to Music- Self Evaluation

You are required to evaluate and create an action plan that accurately reflects all elements of the session taught. Verbal feedback obtained from the participants must be taken into accounts.

In your session evaluation you will:

Video/DVD Assessment Procedure

You may submit a video/DVD for your practical assessment or re-assessment. Video/DVD assessments will be assessed along the same guidelines as stated in this document.

Firstly you must request to submit your assessment as a video/DVD. Do this by completing the Video/DVD Assessment Request Form by visiting https://train.fitness/Portals/40/Documents/GeneralStudentDocuments/Video-Assessment-Application-Form.pdf.

Please note that Train Fitness do not accept postal / hand written applications and therefore request forms must be submitted electronically (not scanned but typed) and attached to an email – [email protected].

Once you have been authorised to complete the complete the assessment as a video/DVD, you should adhere to the following procedures and guidelines:

The procedure for submitting a video is as follows:

1. Inform Learner Support you wish to complete a video/DVD assessment and pay the additional fee for video/DVD submissions

2. The Practical Assessment Video Submission form must be completed and you must provide a photocopy of your passport or an alternative form of photo identification

3. If your practical assessment requires ‘assessor choice’ exercises – you will need to send your planned session to head office for feedback. At this point the ‘assessor choice’ exercises will be confirmed and sent to you in the post. The envelope should be opened in front of the camera during your assessment

4. Ensure you complete the video/DVD assessment following the guidelines stated below5. You must submit your video/DVD and completed portfolio to Train Fitness head office6. Once the video/DVD has been received, please allow 30 days for your results to be published Your video must conform to the following guidelines:

� The video/DVD must be presented in digital format. Examples include; DVD, USB etc � Your video/DVD must be clearly labelled with your full name, user name and clearly marked as a Practical

Assessment, with the assessment title � The video/DVD must contain footage of your assessment ONLY, which must commence at the beginning of the

tape/DVD � Unless previously arranged, your assessment must be shot in one take. You will automatically be referred on

your assessment if the video contains any edits or breaks in recording � Both you and any participants must be in camera shot throughout the entire video/DVD. When exercises are

being performed, the assessor needs to see where you position yourself in relation to any participants, how the participants perform the exercise and the interaction between you

� You should be clearly heard at all times throughout the video/DVD. N.B If it is difficult to hear your instructions you will automatically be referred. It is advisable to check audio levels on your video prior to submission

� Any comments your participant/s makes should be clearly audible at all times.

� If you are using a camera person, they must remain silent throughout. Again they do not need to zoom in/out and should remain a suitable distance away as to not interfere with the assessment but ensure you and your participant(s) are clearly see and herd at all times

� Once the assessment begins do not interact/speak to the camera other than to read out ‘assessor choice’ exercises if required

� If your assessment requires ‘assessors choice’ exercises you should complete these either at an appropriate times during the session or at the end. Open the envelope in front of the camera, read out and show the camera the exercises written down. You can them perform them with your participant(s)

� The assessment must be conducted in a suitable environment. For this reason, a commercial health and fitness centre is highly recommended. If the venue you use is deemed to be unsatisfactory, you will be referred on your assessment, therefore in some instances you may wish to check your venue option with Learner Support in advance

� A certified copy of any legally recognised form of photo identification including photo driver’s license or passport must accompany your submission

TRAINFITNESS provides a formal route for learners wishing to appeal against an assessment decision. All learners are assessed against the relevent regulating organisation criteria. Assessment decisions are made by Assessors who have a recognised Assessor qualification.

Areas for Appeal

The TRAINFITNESS Appeals Policy enables learners in certain situations to make a formal appeal against a recommendation or assessment decision relating to:

1. the mark or grade awarded for an external assessment.

2. the regulating organisation External Quality Assurers’ decision on any element of assessment that differs to the Assessor’s or Internal Quality Assurer’s decision (for example, if an internal assessment has been marked by the centre Assessor as achieved but the External Quality Assurer disagrees with this decision).

3. an application for a reasonable adjustment or special consideration submitted to the regulating organisation for approval.

4. TRAINFITNESS’s final, overall assessment decision for a unit or qualification.

Grounds for Appeal

The following is a list of examples and is not comprehensive:

• There was an error in the external assessment materials.

• A reasonable adjustment was refused without reason or a decision to limit a requested reasonable adjustment proved to be inappropriate or insufficient.

• The learner requested special consideration but this does not seem to have been applied.

• There were medical or other extenuating circumstances which affected the learner’s performance in an external assessment.

• There was inappropriate or irregular conduct on the part of the Assessor.

APPEALS POLICY

Stage 1

The learner should discuss on the day they receive the assessment decision their intention to appeal that decision with the Assessor responsible for informing the learner of that decision. If the learner is dissatisfied with the outcome of this discussion, the learner should complete the Learner Appeals Application form and submit this to [email protected] or by post to: Internal Quality Assurer, TRAINFITNESS, 2A Moonraker Point, Pocock Street, London, SE1 0FN. The learners must submit this form within five days of the date of the assessment and include with it any supporting evidence (see additional notes below). Appeals received after this time will not be heard.

Additional Notes

1. It is extremely difficult to investigate appeals without impartial evidence. Therefore, appeals against referrals in practical teaching based solely on the learner’s disagreement with the Assessor’s decision will only be considered when accompanied by a video recording of the learner’s practical assessment.

2. The learner has the right to video any aspect of their practical assessment using their own video recording equipment provided it does not interfere with the assessment process, other learners or the Assessor’s ability to carry out their role(s).

3. It is the responsibility of the learner to arrange a video operator.

4. Prior to the assessment date and so that a decision can be made for deferral, it is the responsibility of the learner to notify TRAINFITNESS of any medical problem which may affect learner performance adversely in the assessment process.

5. Theory papers that are externally assessed by a regulating organisation are marked electronically.

6. Appeals against referrals for an external theory result may result in the following action:

• Investigation into the centre’s invigilation procedures/delivery;

• Hand marking of the theory papers;

• Investigation into the content of the theory paper by the regulating organisation.
