Many challenges facing persons with disabilities are rooted in negative attitudes which often leads them to social and cultural isolation. The pervasiveness of the prejudice and discrimination affecting persons with disabilities and the degree to which they are excluded from normal social integration produce psychological and social problems for many of them.

Disability is a human rights issue and people with disabilities have the same inalienable rights to life and welfare, education and work, access to all community facilities, self-determination, independent living and active participation in all aspects of society as all other human beings. Mainstreaming disability is about recognizing persons with disabilities as rights-holding, equal members of society who must be actively engaged in the development process irrespective of their impairment or other status.

The social model of disability explains that persons with disabilities are excluded from society not because of their impairments, but as a result of attitudinal, institutional and environmental barriers that impede their ability to participate in the economic, social and cultural activities of daily life.

Decades experience of protecting and caring person with disabilities (PWDs) has given realization to us that PWDs can be productive part of our society if mainstreamed and negative perceptions become barriers to their inclusion and participation in social life.

To develop abilities and optimistic perception through training & awareness in the society within state, corporate, educational and health sector and citizens, Dar ul Sukun initiated “Training Department”, which is running successfully from last organizational year.

Dar ul Sukun (DUS) has created an opportunity for the learning experience for everyone.God bless you all.

The Training Department of Dar ul Sukun was initiated after realizing the need to transform social culture towards disability; it is identified as the most glaring problem and the most difficult obstruction on the way to the growth, inclusion & mainstreaming of PWDs. Article 8 of United Nations Convention on the Rights of persons with Disabilities also mentions that Countries must raise awareness for the rights, capabilities and contributions of people with disabilities and must challenge stereotypes and prejudices relating to people with disabilities through campaigning, education, media and awareness-raising programs.

We started off with Accepting the Exceptional (ATE) Learners program back in 2015 which was specifically designed for the capacity building of special educators and individuals who are engaged directly or indirectly with the Children with Profound Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) while specified need based trainings were designed for the employees of Dar ul Sukun. Over the years the training department has evolved tremendously. 16 customized trainings are designed to cater the training needs for skill development, updating the expertise and shaping the perceptions of society regarding persons with disabilities; from school going children to youth, from health care providers to medical professionals, from parents to teachers, from corporate to government sector. Training department of Dar ul Sukun is contributing in changing the lives of PWDs in Pakistan. The strength and success of our training program is the result of the dedication and commitment of our trainers, faculty members, staff and the loyalty and hard work of our trainees.

The training strategy for the year 2016-2017 includes programs that are illustrated in the organogram figure. Browse through our Annual Report to learn about the diverse expertise that training department of Dar ul Sukun offers.

ACCEPTING THEEXCEPTIONALS

ACCEPTING THE EXCEPTIONAL (ATE)Persons with disabilities in Pakistan experience diehard challenges because they remain badly and widely neglected strata of the society. Although the state has ratified the UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, yet barely anything tangible has been achieved by the state towards the end of ameliorating the sufferings of PWDs. Consequently, PWDs continue to be vulnerable and dependent on the families, institutions or at the mercy of social agents.

To address the utmost need of the capacity building and awareness for the individuals who are dealing with the PWDs, Dar ul sukun had introduced its comprehensive training and awareness program that focuses on grooming professionals who can both properly assist people with disabilities and engage in public awareness on how to better treat PWDs.

DPO/CBO/CSO TRAININGS

Capacity is defined as, the aptitude of individuals and organizations or organizational units to perform functions effectively, efficiently and sustainably. Capacity building is an evidence driven process of strengthening the abilities of individuals, organizations, and systems to execute core functions sustainably, and to continue to improve and develop over time.

Dar ul sukun is very firm about what we want from capacity building of DPO/CBO/CSO. We understand capacity building as creating “legs with which to walk”. Some partners see capacity building only in terms of training, while DPOs see the need for complementary support. DPOs are not being empowered sufficiently to stand independently in order to approach in their own right.

DPO/CBO/CSO TRAININGS

GOAL :

To change the lives of person with disabilities through the work carried out by DPOs, individually and collectively.

INCLUSIVE DEMOCRATIC PARENTINGParenting is a long term investment. It is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, financial, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Parenting refers to the aspects of raising a child aside from the biological relationship.

Parents have "the power" and assume that children will obey and do as they are told. Inclusive Democratic Parenting revolves around the concept of valuing the choices of children as well whether they are children with disabilities. At times if the home has a child with disability parents pay more attention towards them and totally ignore the children without disability which increase hate and insecurity among them. Inclusive Democratic Parenting answers to these questions as well.

GOALS :

To foster an environment which is more productive and respect for the freedom of expression for the family and children.

OBJECTIVES :

To promote the positive and effective relationship between parents and children.Effective raising technique of children with disabilities and children without disabilities.

OUTCOMES :

Cultivate strong relationships among families, teachers, children to ensure healthy and effective living environment.

Before the training by the team of Dar ul Sukun at The Educators School, I wasn’t aware what Disability is and how we have to behave with person with disabilities. But after the session, I realized that there must be an inclusive educational system and we should not feel fear in welcoming children with disabilities in our school. I vow that when I’ll be a doctor I will work for the betterment of person with disabilities. Ms. Areeba RamzanClass 8th - The Educators

We have always heard the words of mentally retarded, abnormal, deaf, dumb, blind etc for person with disabilities which are unethical and obsolete; taught us by the training team of Dar ul Sukun and after this training; “Recoding the First Responder”; I realized that the person with disabilities are human beings as we are and they must get their right to life.
