Welcome toHumboldt Graduate School
The aim of the Humboldt Graduate School is to provide young researchers with an excellent framework for their work by offering a broad and comprehensive education. Our offers are primarily designed for doctoral candidates of our member programs. Doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin who are not a member of Humboldt Graduate School, are also welcome to partici-pate last minute if places were available. With our offers we intend to support young researchers in managing their dissertation project, enhancing key compe-tencies and defining career goals.
The Excellence Initiative enabled us to enlarge our program of workshops that are open to all doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and free of charge. Those cover topics that mainly support the doctoral process.
We also have special offers for postdoctoral researchers but they should feel free to participate in workshops that are announced to doctoral candidates in their third year of PhD studies.
In our rubric “on demand” we present a number of workshop that can be sched-uled if requested. You are welcome to approach us with any further topics you might be interested in.
In the knowledge that providing good care is required for a successful doctor-ate, the Humboldt Graduate School also provides supervisors the opportunity to professionalize for this demanding task.
Let yourself be inspired by our brochure to join the appropriate workshop. Should you have special wishes or suggestions, we will be happy to respond. We would be delighted to support you and wish you every success with your projects.
WELCOME | WILLKOMMEN 5
Willkommen an derHumboldt Graduate School

Target Group: Candidates in all years of PhD studies
OBJECTIVESWhen does the deletion of a band on a blot con-stitute misconduct, or even fraud? What about selecting and reporting a very unusual result as being representative of the data? How should I react if I have the suspicion that scientists in my laboratory environment are ‘behaving badly’? In our seminar we will discuss the topics listed below. My ultimate goal for this seminar is to sensitize you to the issue of good scientific practice, and explore what it means for your own work.
CONTENT• Responsibilities of Research • Supervisors and Trainees Data Management
(including image manipulation)• Publication Practices • Authorship• Peer Review and Privileged Information• Collaborations• Human Subjects Research• Financial Conflicts of Interest• How to react in case of suspected miscon-
duct (‘whistleblowing’)
OBJECTIVESDo you have difficulties getting certain things done? Do you sometimes wonder why you “run around the whole day” and still feel like you got nothing done? Do some of your “to dos” just wander from list to list? This program is for those of us who tend to leave things for later, to not get started until the deadline looms threat-eningly over our heads.
In this program you actually get things done. We won’t only talk about the “whys” and “design strategies”: you are actually going to work on your to dos and get them off the list. The core of the program is the “get it done ses-sion”, a special kind of co-working designed to improve your focus and motivation.

SELF-MANAGEMENT FOR THEWRITING PROCESS PART I & II(INTERDISCIPLINARY)
Trainer: Dr. María MachónDate: Part I: 03.05./ 01.11.2016 & Part II: 24.05./ 29.11.2016Target Group: Candidates in the 1st or 2nd year
of PhD studies
OBJECTIVESThis is not a writing course of the conventional sort. Our focus is on you, the writer, and on your self-management during the writing pro-cess: How to motivate yourself to write? How to feel well during the writing process? How to make decisions and plans you can stick to? How to get your writing projects done in time?
During the one-day workshop we explore these questions in a relaxed and open atmosphere. We analyze your approach to your writing projects and find pragmatic alternatives for the areas that need improvement. With help of sci-entifically proven methods you find and activate your own motivation to write. You learn how to harness your creativity and your “inner critic” to your advantage. Typical problems like procrasti-nation, writer’s block or a lack of confidence in your results are discussed.
In a follow-up session we discuss practical problems found during the implementation phase. We reflect on what went well and what additional fine tuning is needed. You leave the course with clear goals and renewed motivation.
CONTENT• Analysis of your writing work-flow• Finding your own motivation• Defeating writers’ block and procrastination,
coping with perfectionism• Using feedback to your advantage• Office organization
SPEAKING WITH CONFIDENCE AND IMPACT (INTERDISCIPLINARY)
Trainer: Millie BakerDate: 20. – 21.06.2016Target Group: Candidates in the 1st and 2nd year
of PhD studies
OBJECTIVESDo you want to have more impact when deliver-ing a presentation? Do you want to deliver your message with more clarity, build more connec-tion with your audience, or do you simply want to be able to be more relaxed and ‘yourself’ when speaking to groups?
For those people who already feel comfort-able presenting, we work to strengthen your confidence, developing your ability to be more authentic and have more professional impact when you speak. For those who experience nerves when speaking to a group, we look at new ways of transforming them. What are we actually dealing with? How can we experience public speaking as energizing and even enjoy-able? This workshop is not about tips, tricks and techniques. It’s about building genuine strength as a presenter – from the inside out.
CONTENT• Develop our ability to use eye-contact to
engage with individuals and the group• Allow ourselves to relax into the role of speak-
er/presenter and strengthen our professional presence
• Practice delivering our presentations in a more confident and connected way

SUSTAINABLE TIME-MANAGEMENT WITH SELF-COACHING(INTERDISCIPLINARY)
Trainer: Dr. María MachónDate: 14. – 15.11.2016Target Group: Candidates in all years of PhD
studies
OBJECTIVESTime-management is not something static: it needs constant course correction to match your current situation, especially during a PhD. In this training you learn not only principles and techniques of time-management, but also self-coaching tools that make this constant course correction possible. The goal: to approach your time-management issues in a solution-oriented manner.
We first discuss the basics of self-coaching and start practicing right away. We discuss working habits, task-management systems, office organization and more. We analyze “time thieves” like procrastination, perfectionism, and interruptions. We approach the topic of time-management step by step: looking at long-term planning, medium-term planning, and your day-by-day working schedule.
At the end of the workshop you will have a clear idea of self-coaching, the transferable skill par excellence that can be applied to all areas of your life. You will have specific ideas for solving your time-management challenges. Combining self-coaching and a whole toolbox of time-management principles and techniques, you will approach future challenges in a pragmatic, goal-oriented way.

ACADEMIC WRITING FOR SCIENTISTS(SOCIAL SCIENCES/ HUMANITIES)
Trainer: Barbara HandkeDate: 07. – 08.04.2016Target Group: Candidates in the 1st and 2nd year
of PhD studies
OBJECTIVESAll academic writing is about more than just your research findings. Besides the content, every author has at least two other aspects to deal with. First, language. Of course you want to write in a clear, concise and elegant manner. Your mind is filled with great ideas, but whenever you write something down, it is a world away from the perfectly crafted language in the articles of the journals you read. Second, the process. Whenever you sit down to actually write something, you get a rising feeling of panic. In this 1,5-day workshop, you will find out how to continuously improve your writing skills and how to organize your writing process. We will talk about writing, reflect on our own writing habits, share successful strategies with each other and work with our own and others´ texts.
CONTENT• Writing types and writing strategies• Characteristics of academic language• The elements of good style • Overcoming difficulties in the writing process• Giving and receiving text feedback

CONTENT • Develop our ability to use eye-contact to
engage with individuals and the group• Allow ourselves to relax into the role of speak-
er/presenter and strengthen our professional presence
• Practice delivering our presentations in a more confident and connected way
SELF-MANAGEMENT FOR THE WRITING PROCESS PART I & II (INTERDISCIPLINARY)

SUSTAINABLE TIME-MANAGEMENT WITH SELF-COACHING (INTERDISCIPLINARY)

GET YOUR THINGS DONE WITHOUT THE DISCIPLINE(INTERDISCIPLINARY)
Trainer: Dr. María MachónDate: 02.03.2016 (workshop) 20.04. + 30.05.2016 (online-sessions) 05.07.2016 (follow up) or
19.09.2016 (workshop) 12.10. + 03.11.2016 (online-sessions) 28.11.2016 (follow up)Target Group: Candidates in all years of PhD studies and Postdocs
An introductory 1-day time-management work-shop includes the first practical “get it done session” and lets you experience the method and understand why it works. Besides, you learn techniques to improve your performance between the sessions. During two more virtual “get it done sessions” (you participate from your office or home) you keep working on your projects while practicing the techniques until they feel like second nature. In the final follow-up we discuss what went well and what still needs to be improved. We work through all topics and wishes of the participants with group coaching. You leave the program with a new motivation and concrete, tailored solutions.
OBJECTIVESThe aim of this course is to familiarize partici-pants with the strategies for writing successful grant/ fellowship applications to various funding bodies. It consists of lecture-style sequences with active participation by the audience dealing with the theory of good scientific writing, the basics of grant applications and the principles of different funding bodies, as well as hands-on exercises on aim definition, structuring a work plan and writing a grant summary. Additional information and exercises on writing good scientific texts in English will deepen the writing experience.
Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” (4 pages + Scientific CV) in preparation to the course, which will be due ap-prox. 5 days before the start of the course – please take this into consideration when planning partici-pation in this course. These applications will be evaluated by other participants individually before the course and in an evaluation session within the course and each participant will also evaluate 3 – 4 proposals by others in the 4 – 5 days before course start. This will provide extensive feedback for all participants on their applications, but most importantly, will provide a clear impression of the situation and the view of potential evaluators.
The core of the program is the “get it done ses-sion”, a special kind of co-working designed to improve your focus and motivation.

studies and Postdocs
OBJECTIVESMoving to Germany for academic purposes can be an exciting yet daunting task (and your trainer did exactly that a few years ago). Crucially, this workshop focuses specifically on providing you with the skills and knowledge needed to have a smooth start into your new life. In particular, this workshop places particular emphasis on issues pertaining to intercultural understanding, practi-cal administrative and logistical challenges, the formal regulations of German academia and the unspoken rules mediating its professional and social interactions.
What are the main challenges and opportunities facing a foreigner student coming to Germany? What are the main characteristics of German academia? This workshop helps you answer these questions with the help of role-play and recreations of real life situations. The focus will be on the link between theory and practice, using extensive hands-on, practical exercises as well as intercultural surveys
CONTENT • Avoiding the shock of German bureaucracy• Enjoying the fantastic opportunities offered
by living in Germany• Analyzing the role played by intercultural is-
sues and using them to one’s own advantage• Exploring how to link your German experience
to your home country (and to your future)• Becoming aware of how to go about academ-
ic funding, administration and regulations• Understanding how to make the most of your
experience (academically and socially)

PART 1 | TALK“What is Good Scientific Practice?”
Duration: 2 hoursEnglish: on demand
The two-hour introductory talk provides an over-view of the range of areas in which young scien-tists can come into contact with the subject. The goal should be to develop a sense of what “Good Scientific Practice” is. You will also learn which regulations in case of potential misconduct are common at the Humboldt-Universität.
TEIL 1 | VORTRAG„Was ist Gute wissenschaftliche Praxis?“
Good Scientific Practice Gute wissenschaftliche PraxisGood Scientific Practice is an attitude of mind that becomes an attitude to work. It is about the way in which research is planned and conducted, the results are recorded and reported, and the fruits of research are disseminated, applied and exploited. It allows ready verifications of the quality and integrity of data, transparent basis for the investigation of allegations.

Trainer: Barbara HandkeDate: 29. – 30.09.2016Target Group: Candidates in the 3rd year of PhD studies and Postdocs
CONTENT• Write an introduction that captures their
readership’s attention by stating the central thematic concepts of the paper, and a conclu-sion that restates the claim and solution;
• Revise their paper’s structure, sections, para-graphs and sentences according to English language norms;
• Analyze journals in their field to find the best fit for their paper;
• Build in transitional elements to aid their reader’s comprehension;
• Craft an attention-getting yet appropriate abstract and title;
• Write successful submission and revision letters to editors;
• Revise their sentences using practical and easy-to-understand revision strategies (such as making subjects short and concrete char-acters in a story, putting actions into verbs, avoiding excessive nominalizations, putting old before new information etc.);
• Use important English grammatical princi-ples (such as using articles properly, avoiding dangling modifiers, pruning unnecessary verbiage, and creating parallel structure).
An introductory 1-day time-management work-shop includes the first practical “get it done
OBJECTIVESThis seminar covers the requirements of writing specific English, from structuring the paper according to standards in the humanities and social sciences; including essential elements in the introduction and conclusion; writing coher-ent paragraphs; and incorporating key words and concepts into the text. We also analyze abstracts and titles, and discuss publishing strategies such as journal analysis, writing submission letters to editors and responding to requests for revisions. Finally, we implement the theory of sentence revision by correcting writing samples of the participants.

Was sind meine Möglichkeiten?

PEER MENTORING FOR GOALDEVELOPMENT (OPEN TO ALL HU DOCTORAL CANDIDATES)
The aim of this program is to assist doctoral candidates in choosing an appropriate career path. As it is impossible to provide one standard career solution for such a highly educated and specialized target group, we want to offer a pro-gram that will enable you to further develop your own career-planning skills. The process of devel-oping your own career-planning skills rises the inevitable questions of What do I want? What are my skills? What are my professional connections? and What are my options? Our mentoring pro-gram, moderated by an experienced trainer, will focus on these questions in particular. By dint of exchanging experiences and thoughts with other doctoral candidates, you will be able to develop a more precise view on your own goals, skills, talents and needs. This working environment creates and promotes networking skills which will be of high relevance in your prospective ca-reer. All participants of this mentoring program are also invited to an individual coaching at the end of all sessions to narrow down your career plans once more.

ONE TO ONE MENTORING – ZIELE ERREICHEN

INDIVIDUAL COACHING
A doctoral candidate may encounter particular challenges while writing his or her PhD thesis, especially during the final stages. Coping with stress or frustration as well as time manage-ment could become increasingly difficult and it might lead to a writer’s block or conflicts within a team. In such situations, individual coaching could be beneficial.
• Coaching is a method of consulting with a focus on development and addressing those, who seek to improve their way of approach-ing challenges.
• The aim is to observe the situation closely so that the doctoral candidate is inspired to develop a specific plan of action.
• The focus of coaching is not to discuss the questions concerning the subject matter or to provide informed advice but rather lies with communication and the process of reflection.
The Humboldt Graduate School works with coaches, who have gained various experiences in the field of academia and are therefore especially suited to help doctoral candidates. A doctoral coaching usually comprises three to five meetings.
EINZELCOACHING

Trainer: Dr. Matthias SchwarzkopfDate: on demand, Möglichkeit zum Einzel- oder Gruppencoaching (Termine nach Vereinbarung)Target Group: Candidates in the 3rd year of PhD studies

UNTERSTÜTZUNG IN KONFLIKTFÄLLEN

ON DEMAND
Should a sufficient number be interested in one of the following workshop topics or coordina-tors of our member programs like to offer their doctoral candidates or postdocs a special topic that is not scheduled, they should get in touch with us. Based on the needs, we design and organize the workshop with a qualified trainer. Should interdisciplinary exchange be requested we can announce the offer to the other member programs and allocate free spots.
In this category we present some recommenda-tions. However, it is always possible to request additional topics that might be relevant for the interdisciplinary qualification of doctoral candidates. We can then assess the possibilities of arranging workshops accordingly.
Following our program coordinators’ sugges-tion, we offer the half-day workshop “Getting started – Mastering your PhD Project” , where the Doctoral candidates have time to focus on their first steps as junior researchers. We will be offering this welcome- and orientation-day on a regular basis, if required.
Though most on demand offers are usually held in English, we will happily organize them in Ger-man if desired.

Trainer: Dr. Matthias SchwarzkopfDate: on demand, Möglichkeit zum
Einzel- oder Gruppencoaching (Termine nach Vereinbarung)
Target Group: Candidates in the 3rd year of PhD studies

Will ich promovieren?“ an.

Conflict ConsultationKonfliktsprechstunde
CONFLICT CONSULTATIONThe relationship between doctoral candidates and their supervisors is usually very positive and based on trust. However, this does not mean that there will never be situations, in which opinions can differ fundamentally, so much so that it might be helpful to consult an external party. To help solve such issues, regu-lar conflict consultation hours are offered for each doctoral candidate of the Humboldt-Uni-versität. This way, serious problems between the doctoral candidate and the supervisor may be resolved in advance, in advance and the basis for a continuous contstructive collabora-tion can be restored.
These consultation hours will be offered by trained mediators and are free of charge. The consultation hour will be held at the Hum-boldt Graduate School, Luisenstraße 56 in Berlin-Mitte, or – if desired – it can be held in Adlershof as well.
The consultation hour usually takes place once a week. Please make sure to register first via e-mail ([email protected]) or telephone: 030-2093-1702 or 0172-2357086 (Dr. Regina von Schmeling). Upon registra-tion you will be informed about the time and room number for the consultation. Complete confidentiality will be ensured.

OUR MEMBER PROGRAMSAt the core of a structured doctorate at the Humboldt-Universität lie the member programs of Humboldt Graduate School. They organ-ize the professional training program for their doctoral candidates as well as supporting their academic career. The Humboldt Graduate School operates as the overarching quality man-agement for its member programs. A member-ship is pricipally limited to fi ve years, followed by an evaluation. Programs that have been evaluated externally (e.g. DFG-funded graduate schools or research training groups) may join the Humboldt Graduate School without further inspection. In these cases, a membership ter-minates with the expiring funding period (plus abandonment stage).

ASSOCIATED PROGRAMSFor a program to become a member of Humboldt Graduate School, it is required to as-sociate for a period of one year, followed by an evaluation. During the association period a pro-gram is invited to participate in the Humboldt Graduate School’s off ers on the same terms as the member programs.
ASSOZIIERTE PROGRAMMEDer Mitgliedschaft in der Humboldt Gradua-te School geht grundsätzlich eine einjährige Assoziierungszeit voraus. Danach wird das Programm evaluiert. COOPERATIONSDoctoral programs in institutions other than the Humboldt-Universität may cooperate with Humboldt Graduate School, provided that they meet the principle standards of a structured doctorate. Doctoral candidates in cooperating programs are invited to participate in the Hum-boldt Graduate School’s offers on the same terms as doctoral candidates of its member programs.
