RENEWBLE ENERGY

• Hydroelectric• Wind Power• Solar Power• Biomass

7

Hydroelectric

• This is the most important removable energy source in Argentina. It represents 3,8% of total consumption of renewable energy sources in the country.

• Only three plants provides 50% of the total hydraulic energy in Argentina, these are: Yacyretà, Salto Grande and Piedra del Aguila. The other 50% are supply by other 5 plants.

8

WIND POWER

• The most important region in Argentina for producing wind energy is Patagonia and has a potential production of 5000 MW.

• There are installed 17 wind farm that generate 29,7MW.

9

SOLAR POWER

The main area of solar irradiation in Argentina is NOA (4-5 KwH/m2/d) and it varies according the different season.

BIOMASS

In Argentina Ministry of Agriculture and INTA have been identified biomasic resources by a total of 124M tons that can be used to produce energy

11

POLICY ON BIOFUELS

LAW 26.093/2006: PROMOTES THE PRODUCTION AND USE OF BIOFUELS

Mandatory use 10% bioethanol and 10% biodieselDefinition of domestic prices for biofuels Quality standards

Law 26,90/2006, establishes that, by 2016, 8% of national electricity consumption should be supplied by renewable sources, including biomass.

The law prioritizes projects that accomplish the following criteria:

Sponsored by small and medium sized companies.Belong to farming producers. Located in regional and rural economies.

SMALL FARMERS

INTA (Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria) is developing technologies for each agro region of the country targeted to small farmers:

– BIOGAS– SOLAR– WIND– MINI HYDROELECTRIC

15

Implemented by the Government of Argentina through the Ministries of Agriculture and Energy,

with technical assistance from FAO.

The main objective of this program is to promote the development of bioenergy at the regional and

national level, in order to supply clean, reliable and competitive energy.

BIOGASThere are public and private institutions working on the development of biogas technology at different stages and scales.

In Argentina there are same initiatives to produce biogas from landfills in Región Pampeana (CEAMSE, Mar del Plata, Rosario y Córdoba). 17

CONCLUSIONS• Argentina has ideal growing conditions for the sustained

development of the raw materials needed for the production of biofuels.

• Argentina has immediate availability of the raw material needed to cover the mandatory use in all gasoline and diesel consumption.

• There is a big potential to develop the biogas technologies in Argentina.

• There are real interest of the Government of Argentina to establish technical cooperation with other countries in the bioenergy sector in various areas, such as, capacity building, exchange of information and technicians among others. 21
