Child Development, Health, and Safety Basics This training will provide participants an overview of child development, health, and safety issues for children birth through early school-age. Emphasis will be on understanding patterns of development, developmental domains, and the role of nutrition in development. In addition, health and safety issues will address supporting the growth of healthy children – from the basics such as handwashing to more in-depth practices surrounding healthy procedures and disease prevention. Participants will learn more about emergency planning/preparedness and first aid as well as identify tips for maintaining safe indoor/outdoor environments. Connecting Food Into Curriculum for Young Children Learn to integrate gardening into your classroom routines, activities, and curriculum. This hands-on training will walk you through the process of adding a garden to your site from seed to harvest. Are you an experienced gardener but not sure how to engage children in the process? No problem! Participants will walk away with ideas on how to make gardening child-friendly and fun while also increasing family engagement. Child care practitioners are important role models for the children in their care. The phrase “actions speak louder than words” is especially true for children
since they watch and imitate what adults are doing. Being a healthy role model not only is important for the children but enables the care providers to have
the energy and good health to meet the demands of the job. This lesson explores key concepts and actions for modeling healthy behaviors for children.

How to Identify and Support Characteristics of Autism in Your Classroom Many children are diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) after age 4, though autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as age 2. We'll review characteristics of ASD and discuss the challenges that can occur in the preschool classroom. Participants will learn strategies to implement in the classroom that help with: attention/sensory, communication, social, rigidity or repetitive behaviors, and cognitive/learning. Mindful Ways to Let Go of Tension and Stress Tired of feeling stressed, tight, or tense? Learn ways to connect your mind and body and let go of tension and stress in your neck, back, shoulders, and body with gentle yoga and stretch movements. The trainer will incorporate ideas to integrate similar movement with children. Wear comfortable clothing. Participants will sign a waiver of liability upon participation. No Pressure Food Tasting for Young Children In this hands-on training, providers will learn how and why to include tastings of new and familiar foods into their classroom curriculum. Participants will help make a child friendly kale salad, as well as learn the ins and outs of encouraging no pressure tastings. Audience: All Providers 2 Training Hours; Level of Learning: Introductory
PITC Module 3: Learning and Development This session explores brain development, early learning and language development, and appropriate curriculum planning for infants and toddlers. PITC’s view of infants as active, self-motivated learners is explained and the role of caregiver in supporting infants’ desire for exploration is considered. The perspective that is presented can be summed up in the following way: “All children are born wired for feelings and ready to learn” when provided nurturing relationships and a peaceful but engaging environment that supports all learners, including infants with special needs. Engaging discussion and activities support participant’s learning.-- There will be a 30 minute break. Please bring a sack lunch or plan to purchase lunch at a nearby restaurant. PITC Module 4: Culture, Family and Providers This training focuses on culture and its implications for families and providers. Participants will learn how family experiences, knowledge, and childrearing beliefs and practices can be incorporated into early care and classroom settings. Cultural expectations and biases will be explored and participants will have the opportunity to increase their cultural awareness in terms of how their assumptions may affect their interactions with young children and families. Participants will demonstrate their understanding of how family structures, diversity in social, cultural, linguistic, or religious backgrounds influence family approaches to parenting in children birth to three, each other, and the community. Participants will gain an understanding of how relationships among caregivers, infants/toddlers, and families can impact other child-family, child-practitioner, and practitioner-family relationships-- There will be a 30 minute break. Positive Guidance to Support Toddler Socialization This training will explore developmentally appropriate socialization that takes place between infancy and toddlerhood, and positive guidance techniques caregivers can use to support pro-social behavior. Understanding the causes of common toddler behaviors and how caregiver’s responses can influence young children will also be explored. Resilient Caregivers: Bouncing Back from Stress Feeling stressed at work? Learn how to deal with and “bounce back” from stress. Bouncing back is sometimes called resiliency. Everyone needs to find ways to bounce back after experiencing stress. This is very important with the demanding job of caring for children every day. Learn more about stress and resiliency, and identify your own strengths and ability to deal with or avoid stress. Audience: All Providers 2 Training Hours; Level of Learning: Introductory

We Choose Health: Modules 1 & 2 (Childhood Obesity and Nutrition for Young Children) In this training session, the problem and consequences of childhood obesity in 2–5 year old children will be discussed. The environment and the role of the child care provider in preventing obesity and shaping children’s eating behavior will be described. In addition, providers will explore some ways that can help children develop healthy eating habits and be more active. The Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC) tool will be used to explore specific program improvements that guide child care providers in giving children a healthy start in life.
