Introduction to SKF Training Solutions
Knowledge @ campusIn keeping with the requirements of the industry, Engineering Institutes often find themselves focusing more on a fixed cur-riculum. While it is important to educate students, they also need to be prepared to face the real world with soft skills. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a place where stu-dents could enhance their skills through hands-on experience? With the backing of such support skills students improve their employable potential in this highly competi-tive marketplace.
At SKF, our mission as a ‘Knowledge Engi-neering Company’ is to bridge the gap of academic curricula and real time industry world practices. SKF Training Solutions have designed special training packages that will suit the exact learning needs not just of the students, but of their faculty as well.
Some of the major offering that SKF has to offer Institutes are:
FFT Analyser Training Package:
This training package includes on-site training on FFT analysis process and offers students a certification from SKF.
Several global organisations use the various technologies in FFTs for predictive main-tenance. For students, this is an important milestone towards understanding require-ments.
The training will include the supply of SKF FFT analysers, with the latest technological features and various attachments as per the syllabus of course. These analysers can be used for learning Condition monitoring, FFT analysis, Sound analysis, Dynamic analysis, Resonance testing, data storage and record-ing for future use, etc.
Students benefit from not just the course material, but also from the real-time case studies from various industries.
SKF has successfully implemented this at:- Govt. College of Engineering, Karad- AP College of Engineering, Pune- D.Y. Patil School of Engineering, Pune
Experimental test rigs:
The SKF experimental rig is a set of various shafts, couplings, housings, belt drives and a coupled mass used for imparting training to students who work with rotating machin-ery and the associated defects students will learn to detect various failures/defects in the rig to study and derive conclusions as per the research/practical requirement
SKF has successfully implemented this at:- SMTI, Kymoor- D.Y. Patil School of Engineering, Pune

Computer-based Learning tools:
These self-learning tools cover a range of topics like equipment maintenance, diag-nostics of machinery, learning how major equipment works, etc.
Students can benefit from a full range of computer based learning tools which they can participate in as per their own schedule. As an essential part of your e-library, stu-dents can learn about topics including Analy-sis of resonance, Vibration analysis, Dynamic balancing, Rolling element bearings, etc.
SKF has successfully implemented this at:- Bhartiya Vidyapeeth College of
Engineering, Pune
SKF-Institute partnership program:SKF Training Solutions can partner with Engineering Institute on a strategic scale to have a joint initiative on setting up full-fledged ‘Reliability Training Cell’ and have joint training programs on mutually-agreed terms and conditions for nearby industries and colleges.
The partnership has a strong advantage to students as well as the Institute in terms of ease of availability of latest technologies for Reliability Improvement. A differentiat-ing factor for the Institute is the sustainable partnership with a global organisation like SKF AB.
MITS, Gwalior is an example of the above where a full fledged SKF training centre is established

Training need analysisHighest skills improvement opportunity for staffTraining Needs Analysis (TNA): The shift to a fully integrated, reliability and risk-based asset management strategy starts with a good initial understanding of where your staff are today and where your staff need to be to attain optimum plant performance.
The TNA enables this crucial understand-ing, combining our experience in training and knowledge of maintenance and reli-ability.
The goal is to provide useful and mean-ingful information to help you focus on improvements for plant performance.
TNA is conducted with individuals or a group of your staff from the following work areas:Managers• Maintenance• Reliability• Engineering
Superintendents / Supervisors• Mechanical maintenance• Electrical maintenance• Planning and stores
Engineers• Mechanical• Electrical• Reliability• Condition monitoring• Application
Technicians• Mechanical• Electrical• Reliability• Condition monitoring• Lubrication
Targeting twelve areas of competency for improvementOpportunities for improvement are de-termined when training needs analysis is analysed.
Typical improvements fall in the following areas:1. Bearing and seal technology2. Power transmission3. Lubrication4. Root cause failure analysis5. Oil analysis6. Maintenance strategy7. Non destructive testing8. Vibration analysis9. Thermography10. Motor testing and diagnostics11. Precision alignment and balancing12. Planning and scheduling

A progressive and structured approach to training assessment
Skill gap analysis in all key areas of compe-tency, the training needs analysis will give you a clearer perspective of your people’s competency and skill levels.
The results are analysed and you will be provided with a report which includes:1. A summary of individuals or group of
individuals work profile.2. A ‘spider chart’, showing a micro-level
assessment of each question, with skill
levels for each area of competency, op-portunities for improvement as well as areas of exceptional performance (refer to spider chart above).
3. A skill level summary matrix showing a macro level assessment for each of the areas of competency.
4. A detailed proposal of recommenda-tions for improvement for the individual or group of individuals supported by the finding of the analysis.

ICML – The International Council for Machinery LubricationICML offers skill certification testing for individuals in the fields of machine condi-tion monitoring, lubrication and oil analysis. ICML currently provides certification for the Machine Lubricant Analyst (MLA), Machine Lubrication Technician (MLT) and Labora-tory Lubricant Analyst (LLA).
ICML offers lubrication skills certificationIncreasingly, managers are looking to third party organizations to verify that their staff members are competent and ready to perform in the roles to which they are assigned.
ICML certification is a peer-review process whereby individuals may prove their skills. It is not a licensing process like that for physi-cians or attorneys that is required by state law to practice in a field. If successful, the individual will be certified by ICML, receive a wall certificate and a wallet card providing proof of certification. ICML offers industry the following three certifications.
Machine Lubricant Analyst (MLA)These individuals must demonstrate skills in the area of used lubricant analysis for machine condition monitoring. Level-I certification is oriented toward the basics of lubrication and sampling, Level-II focuses
on sampling, test selection and fundamen-tal data interpretation. Level-III is directed toward advanced diagnostics and trouble-shooting, integration with other technolo-gies and program management.
Machine Lubrication Technician (MLT)-These individuals must demonstrate skills in the day-to-day activities associated with proper lubrication of machinery. Level-I is oriented toward lubrication basics and the proper application and storage of lubri-cant. Level-II is directed toward advanced understanding of lubrication fundamentals, lubricant selection and lubrication schedule and program management.
Laboratory Lubricant Analyst (LLA)These individuals must demonstrate skills in the performance of oil analysis activities typically required of a laboratory technician working in the used lubricant analysis field. Level-I is oriented toward the basic aspects of performing common tests in the lab and assuring data quality. Level-II is directed to-ward advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting instrument error and managing lab pro-cesses, including testing and service quality.
