    e International Trainers Pool

ELSAs International rainers Pool (IP) has been establis-hed in 2000. Te aim of the IP was always to improve thequality of the human resources amongst the ELSA Mem-bers in the Network. Te trainers of the IP are highly mo-tivated and dedicated former ELSA Members, voluntarilyproviding trainings in the Network. Tese trainers are full-time professionals, sometimes with families, but still part ofthe ELSA Family.

e International Trainers Pool in 2010/2011

oday, there are trainers active in the IP from 13 dierentcountries. ELSA International assures the quality of the trai-ners in the IP by several ways. At rst, feedback and evalu-ation are important to overcome (structural) problems andto meet the demands and conditions of the ELSA Network.Tere are also events organised by ELSA International calledthe rain the rainers Week and the Refreshment Weekend.Te last Refreshment Weekend took place in Alanya, ur-key, just before the opening of the 58th ICM. Te goal of

the Refreshment Weekend is to refresh the skills of thetrainers and to discuss about the IP, training and the ELSANetwork.

    Train the Trainers Week 2011

Te rain the rainers Week is an event to attract new mem-bers to the International rainers Pool. Tis is not an annu-al event, but an event that takes place once every two years.Te upcoming rain the rainers Week is scheduled in thesummer of 2011. In this Newsletter you can nd the invi-

tation for this prestigious event. Do you think your ELSACareer is over? Tink again, and apply for the rain the rai-ners Week 2011.

    Training Resolves All Internal Needs

raining in ELSA has always played a crucial and impor-tant role. Tere are several reasons to list why training isimportant, but we believe that raining Resolves All Inter-nal Needs. Te Network believes in this motto. Tis canbe illustrated by mentioning several events and organs. Se-veral ELSA groups have their training week (or weekend). Some of those events welcomes ELSA members from othergroups to participate that training event. Te most famousexample is the ELSA House raining Week, an annual eventthat takes place in July, together with the transition of thenew International Board. And next to those events, there isthe existence of several National rainers Pools. Te IPhas become more and more popular in the last years, as thenumber of trainings by the IP has been increasing in thelast years.

    In this Training Newsletter

Te Network believes in training and the IP. Nevertheless, the IP could be more eective than it already is. Tere

is still a lack of knowledge in the Network about the IP.ELSA International will work on this to overcome this struc-tural problem. Te benets of a training will be stressed outthis year too, as mentioned before, training has a huge eecton human resources. Tis Newsletter is aiming to includesome Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and a tutorial.Te tutorial is about how to apply for a training from theIP, and what conditions should your ELSA Group meetfor a training.

If you have any questions about training or the IP, do not

hesitate to contact ELSA International; [email protected].

    e XXXII ICM, Porto 1997

I come from Portugal, where a national group of ELSA wasfounded in 1986, at the University of Lisbon. I got to knowELSA during my Law studies at that University, where I

joined a group of people determined to re-start the LocalGroup ELSA F.D. Lisbon in 1996. I started my ELSA ca-reer as Secretary General of ELSA F.D. Lisbon, and the rstinternational event I attended was the 1997 ICM in Porto,

where elections for the International Board 1998 were ta-king place. At that ICM, the Secretary General of ELSAPortugal was elected for the post of Secretary General of theIB, and little did I know then that I would become his suc-cessor both in ELSA Portugal and in ELSA International ayear later.

During those ELSA years in Portugal, I was involved inthe organization of a Seminar, a national Moot Court (du-ring the EXPO98 in Lisbon), I was part of the OrganisingCommittee of the 1998 Summer IPM which took place inthe South of Portugal, in Portimo, and I did some fundrai-sing. When I went to the 1998 ICM in Rome, as SecretaryGeneral of ELSA Portugal, I truly believed that it would bemy goodbye to ELSA, since my studies were nished and I

was supposed to start working in a law rm in Lisbon theday after the end of the ICM. Tats not how things turned

out, and I ended up elected Secretary General of the Inter-national Board for the term of January 1st to December 31st

    1999.

    Secretary General ELSA International 1999 - 2000

Until 2002, there was no IB allowance, and running for theIB was not only a decision that had quite important nan-cial implications, but it also meant losing two years in yourstudies. At the 1999 Spring ICM in Opatija (Croatia), theCouncil decided to change the IBs term of oce from the

calendar year to the academic year, and that meant that thenext board to be elected would have only a 7-months termin oce.

At the 1999 Autumn ICM in Malta, since I wanted to com-plete what I had set out as strategic objective for my area, Idecided to run for a second term.

So I was re-elected Secretary General of ELSA International,

    from January 1st

    to July 31st

2000. During this period, theestablishment of the ELSA International rainers Pool wasa priority for me due to the tremendous needs of training inELSA, and we managed to reach an agreement with ELSAsPremium Corporate Partner at the time, to have professionaltrainers train future IP trainers at the newly opened Clif-ford Chance raining Academy in Amsterdam. Finally theIP was coming to life!!! (It had been an idea since 1994...)

    Post ELSA Life?

After my second term as Secretary General of the IB,I thought I needed a long break from ELSA life. Well, itdidnt happen quite this way

I had left most of my luggage at the ELSA house in Brussels, and in September, I was back to pick it up and to attendthe 1st ELSA International rain-Te-rainer Weekend(W), in Amsterdam, at the Cliord Chance raining

Academy. At the W, I was taught how to train by pro-fessionals, and learnt about the techniques and the skills a

trainer needs to acquire and develop. Furthermore, it wasa great opportunity to meet again some ELSA friends. Andthats how I became an IP trainer.

Living the life of an ITP Trainer

IP trainers have the responsibility of making ELSA growstronger by giving the members the tools that can make their

work easier and more ecient. When I meet currently activeELSA members, I am convinced the IP has been successfulin passing the knowledge from generation to generation, andin qualifying ELSA members. In addition to the skills activeELSA members get each time they organise a conference, orprepare a fundraising proposal, the IP gives members struc-tured tools and knowledge for example in project manage-ment, conict management or how to work in a team , that

will be useful not only in their ELSA career but also for theirfuture professional life.

    Dedication and combination is possible

As you start having a busy professional life, and a family ofyour own, it isnt always easy to spend time, holidays or week-ends giving training to ELSA members. But if you feel thatyou possess the knowledge and the motivation, do not hesitate

to apply for the IP! Its the best contribution you can make tothe future generations of ELSA.

    Life in Portugal after ELSA

I returned to Portugal, got admitted to the Portuguese BarAssociation, and began working in a Law rm in Lisbon. In 2004, I was awarded a scholarship to study EuropeanLaw, Economy and Politics at the Sorbonne University, andmoved to Paris.

Since 2005, I was working mainly in the eld of social af-fairs and Labour Law on the national, the European andthe international level. Working as legal advisor to a Mem-ber of the European Parliament, and later on as advisor to aMember of the Portuguese Government, allowed me to fol-low closely decision-making processes at the European andnational level, to participate in the drafting of legislation, inthe negotiation and transposition of EU Directives, and inthe Portuguese Labour Relations reform.

Still ghting for a Just world...

Currently, I am working in Lisbon for a specialized agency

of the United Nations, in elds such as child labour, CSRor forced labour. Part of my work implies the implementa-tion of technical cooperation initiatives, namely addressedto Portuguese Speaking Countries in Africa or imor Leste,

which sometimes involves missions in the eld. Te overallpurpose is to assist Governments, employers and trade un-ions in making Decent Work a reality for all.

Troughout my professional life, the knowledge and ex-periences I acquired in ELSA have always proved useful, especially since I had to live, study and work in dierent

countries, in an international, multilingual and multicultur-al environment. ELSA has given me so much knowledge,

experience andgood times, thatI feel proud tobe able to con-tribute towardsits development.

    8/12

On Saturday 20th November 2011, ELSA Estonia had theirTraining Day or her Board Members and Directors. BothELSA Estonia and the ITP Trainer ms. Tuulia Hietaniemiwere more than willing to share their experiences o this ruituland ELSA Spirit aected day

    Training to develop ELSA Estonia

ELSA Estonias training day was targeted to National

Board of ELSA Estonia, our directors and active mem-bers. raining was being held on the 20th November inallinn, which is the capital of Estonia. It took place inthe rooms of the Ministry of Economic Aairs and Com-munications.

Te idea of having an IP trainer in Estonia came al-ready in July, the general purpose was to give ELSA Es-tonia ocers more know-how and to boost them to de-velop ELSA Estonia. Members of the new board of ELSAEstonia were freshers and they had very little knowledge

about supportive skills to manage ELSA national groupthe best possible way. ELSA Estonia has been in a phaseof rapid development and thats why the aim of ourraining Day was to get more know-how on presenta-tion skills and negotiation skills, and to motivate ELSAEstonias new board, directors and other active members.

EDF and trainings from the ITP

We chose topics together with board members and direc-tors and found these training topics to be very useful forELSA Estonias ocers to nd more sponsors and humanresources. We are convinced that these skills are useful toprovide sustainable development of ELSA Estonia. SinceELSA Estonia is quite weak when it comes to nancialsituation we also applied for a grant from the ELSA De-velopment Foundation (EDF) to organise this trainingday. Without this grant we probably wouldnt have hadthis training but luckily there was nothing hard to applyfor that.

We had extremely lovely trainer uulia Hietaniemi fromELSA International rainers Pool who arrived to Estoniaon the 19th of November.

We accommodated her at the guest room of ELSA EstoniasPresident Ave-Geidi. It was the best way to keep our ex-penses as low as possible and also to get to know our trainerbetter and make her feel like home. On the 19th of Novem-ber we made last preparations for the raining Day. Andsince we have famous old town in allinn, we also intro-duced our city to uulia.

On the 20th of November training day started already at

10 a.m. sharp. First half of the day was dedicated to ne-gotiation skills. raining consisted of two parts theoryand practise. On theory part uulia gave us useful andimportant tips to follow during negotiations. On practisepart we had legal situation where we - as advocates oftwo sides had to negotiate during their meeting. Tere

was also an observer at the group who had to mark downall the right moves and mistakes parties did during theirmeeting. We also got a lot of useful tips how to commu-nicate on situations where you basically need to get whatyou want.

After delicious lunch our training day continued withtraining on presentation skills. Tis training also consist-ed of theory and practise part. At the second part we hadto prepare a presentation in groups. It was very useful be-cause after the presentation each one of us got individualcomments and evaluation that were very helping to im-prove ourselves in the future. It waspure fun and this game brought

us all closer to each other.

Looking back at the Training Day

And as we all know, no ELSA event ends without a socialprogramme, so at the end of the day we also had more like

party-mood to share our im-pressions and relax.

We believe the raining Daymet all our expectations. We

wanted to learn more usefultips to improve our association in Estonia. Next time we gofor fundraising or have job-hunting negotiations or when

we do presentation of ELSA at the Universities for example,we will be more experienced and self-condent. Now we

also know the aspects we should put more attention to.

Second aim of this day was to bring the National Boardmembers, directors and other active members closer to eachother and motivate them. We are sure this aim was also suc-cessfully met because we had a lot of fun, active discussionsand mixed working groups during the day. Useful skillsand happy memories together are denitely groundsels forbuilding well-working and motivated team.

I dare to recommend this kind of event to all ELSA groups.

It was fun, useful and there was nothing hard to organisesomething like this.

    Ave-Geidi JallaiPresident ELSA Estonia 2010/2011

    Training in the Network

    e perspective of Tuulia

I was really happy to see the call of ELSA Estonia for theirraining Day and decided to apply at once as I had wanted

to visit allinn for many years. I was happy to be able tocontribute for their needs in presentation and negotiationskills which are my favorite areas for giving trainings.

It was really easy to travel to allinn to give trainings as theorganisation of the raining Day was just perfect and thecontact to the president of ELSA Estonia was really good.

My ights were booked for meand I was accommodated nicely

in the guest room of the presidentof ELSA Estonia. For me, this was a much more comfortablesolution than living in a hotel as

we could discuss all the necessaryissues and get to know each other well before the start of theraining Day. ELSA Estonia provided me with any help andequipment which I needed for the two trainings. I had thefeeling that they had everything under really good controlduring the whole raining Day. Te participants were re-ally active during the whole day, which made my work a lot

easier and they participated active in all tasks which I gavethem. Tus, I got a really good picture of ELSA Estonia andtheir board-members.

On the evening before the raining Day the President andthe Secretary General of ELSA Estonia took me for a walkin their amazing old town. I got to taste the hot traditionalEstonian Christmas Drink and afterwards we had a verydelicious dinner. Also during the raining Day every kindof snacks and drinks were provided. I think I havent eatenthat delicious food for a really long time! After the rainingDay we had a few hours time to relax before the eveningprogram started. I can assure that the Estonian night-lifeis worth seeing and I am really satised that I got appoint-ed for this training as I got great friends, experiences andgot the chance to visit the amazingly beautiful old town ofallinn.

Q: How long does a training from the ITP last?

A: at depends on many actors, like the training topic, and the expectations/goals o the training. A training canlast or three hours, to a certain amount o days. e currentstandard is that a training lasts or 3 5 hours; a wholemorning or a whole aternoon.

Q: My group is facing problems that cannot be coun-

tered when looking at the list of training topics?

A: Choosing a training topic is much more than a match-making process. Trainings rom the ITP targets the currentshortcomings/weakness o the group. By providing the traineras much inormation beorehand, the trainer is able to an-ticipate the problems and the expectations in order to tacklethe current problems. Trainings can be regarded as demandand supply, and trainers can incorporate the content o sev-eral training topics in one session.

Q: Id like to have a trainer from the ITP over to trainmy ELSA Group, however, I am lacking the nancialresources to cover the expenses of the trainer?

A: e ELSA Development Foundation is ounded to helpovercome structural weaknesses within the Network. Train-ings rom the ITP is one o the most important tools toovercome these weaknesses. Every ELSA Group is entitledto apply or a grant rom the ELSA Development Founda-tion. For more inormation about the ELSA DevelopmentFoundation, please contact [email protected].

Q: To what extend does a training from the ITP dier, compared to a training from an external professional?

A: Trainings given by the ITP take place within an ELSArelated context. is implies that the gained skills rom anITP Training can be brought into practise much more eas-ily, compared to a training rom an external. Trainers romthe ITP are ormer ELSA Members, still being aware o theconditions, settings and policies o ELSA Groups. Trainings

rom the ITP are thereore more concrete and less abstract.

Q: My National Group has a National Trainers Pool. Ismy group entitled to receive a training from the ITP?

A: e main Training Body in ELSA is the International Trai-ners Pool. Every ELSA Group in the Network is entitled toapply or a training rom the ITP, this means Local Groups andNational Groups.

Q: Are trainings from the ITP only possible during in-

ternal statutory events like National Council Meetings?

A: Certainly not. Trainings can be incorporated at any kind oevent. Whether it be a National Council Meeting, or a specifcOrganisation Committee Meeting. Moreover, or this year, trai-ning can be used or realising several Anniversary events.

Q: Why should I apply for a training from the ITP?

A: ere are numerous reasons to have trainings rom the ITP,

but the most important reason is that training enhances yourskills as ELSA Member, and will beneft you or the rest o yourlie. Reasons that should not be overlooked, is that trainings

rom the ITP give you motivation, dedication, the internatio-nality o this Network, and you are able to experience the cultu-ral diversity o ELSA.

Q: How do I become an ITP Trainer?

A: Apply or the Train the Trainers Week 2011, get selected, andprove yoursel towards the Trainer Team and ELSA Internatio-nal that you can be qualifed as a trainer with excellent trainingskills with great motivation and attitude.

Q: I would like to apply for a training from the ITP, buthow high are the chances that a trainer is available andqualied for my request?

A: ITP Trainers are ormer ELSA Members, and nowadays ull-time proessionals, sometimes with a amily. Nevertheless, the ITP has the reputation o being a high quality eective trai-

ners pool, and this means that or almost all requests, a suci-ent number o trainers are available and qualifed to ulfl yourrequest.

    11/12

e ollowing tutorial has the aim to give the ELSA Net-work some guidelines, when groups are considering to re-quest a training rom the ITP or their group. Please notethat ELSA International and the trainers rom the ITP are

exible to a certain extent. ELSA International will supportand advise ELSA Groups as best as possible to get a training

rom the ITP or their ELSA Group.

    1. Why do you want a training from the ITP?

Consider if your ELSA Group is facing structural prob-lems, that you want to get rid of by the skills you gainfrom an IP raining, or if you want to enhance thequality of your ELSA Members. rainers from the IP

will always bring the international dimension to yourgroup, so your ELSA Group is able to experience the cul-tural diversity.

    2. What is the best topic for my ELSA Group

raining topics are roughly divided in two categories;soft skills and supportive skills. rainings on specicELSA topics, like ransition, are mostly a combinationof two or more training topics. Soft skills topics are clas-sic training topics, taking place in an ELSA context andbroader, whereas supportive skills topics deal with thecore business of your ELSA Group, primarily giving youskills to tackle a certain concrete situation. However, thelabel you put on your request heavily depends on yourdemands. And training will benet you for the rest ofyour life; not only limited by your ELSA Career.

    3. Consider how much time and money you are will-ing to spend on training

Allocate sucient time for training; dedicate at least onefull morning or afternoon for one training session, astraining brings the gained skills immediately into prac-tise. More importantly, your ELSA Group should coverthe expenses of trainer(s): travel expenses and accom-modation. If your ELSA Group is not able to full this

important condition, contact ELSA International. Ap-plying for the ELSA Development Foundation is also anoption, please contact: [email protected].

    4. Contact ELSA International as soon as possible whenyour ELSA Group has decided to request for a trainingfrom the ITP, [email protected]

Since most of the trainers are full-time professionals, therecommended time to contact ELSA International is six

weeks prior to the requested training.

    5. ELSA International will ask you preliminary questi-

ons, and checks if your ELSA Group is able to meet theproper conditions for a training from the ITP

    6. ELSA International contacts the ITP, and selects themost qualied (skills and practical circumstances) trai-ner for the group

Please note that ELSA Groups can request a specic trainer. However, ELSA International will search for a trainer thatis better qualied to full the request of the ELSA Group,as ELSA International has a complete overview of each
