BACKGROUND:
Indiarankssecondinvegetableareaandproductionintheworld.
Differentvegetablescanbegrowninoneorotherpartsofthecountry
throughouttheyearasthecountryisbestowedwithvariedagroclimatic
conditions.TheCucurbitaceae familyconsistsofmany important food
plantssuchasmelon,pumpkin,squash,andcucumber;usefulplantsfor
the production of items of utility such as bottle gourds, loofah,
ornamentalgourds,etc.Seedoilofmelonisasourceofbiodiesel.Many
under utilized vegetables like wild melon, spine gourd, karzi kai, ivy
gourd, pointed gourd etc are having many nutritional and have got
potentialneutraceauticalvalueswhichcanbeidenti�iedanddocumented
for future use. Indian subcontinent is rich in biodiversity of many
cucurbitsandissaidtobetheprimaryandsecondarycentreoforiginof
manygourdsandmelons.Therefore,lotofvariabilityisfoundinthisarea.
Hence, systematic and institutionalized characterization and
conservationaboutofthisvariabilityareverymuchessentialtobreed
crop varieties and face new challenges. Therefore, taking into
considerationthevalueofgermplasmresourcesandscope,thetrainingis
verymuchessentialtoadopttherecentmethods.Theseaspectsincluding
biotechnologicaltoolstothetraineesforupdatingtheirknowledgeinthe
ICAR sponsored training programme on “Recent Advances in
Conservation and Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources inrd
Cucurbitaceous Vegetables” under CAFT is being organized from 3 rd
October to 23 October, 2019 at University of Horticultural Sciences,
Bagalkot.
OBJECTIVES
1. Tocreateawarenessonimportanceofcollection,conservationand
utilizationofplantgeneticresourcesincucurbitaceousvegetables.
2. Toprovidetrainingoncollection,conservationandutilizationofPGR
indifferentcucurbitaceousvegetablecrops.
3. Toenrichtheknowledgeonapplicationofbiotechnologicaltoolsfor
PGRconservationandutilizationincucurbitaceousvegetablecrops.
ABOUTTHEVENUE:th
TheCollegeofHorticulture,Bagalkotwasstartedon7 July,2008.
ThiscollegeishousedinthemaincampusofUniversityofHorticultural
Sciences,Bagalkot,Karnataka.TheUniversityofHorticulturalSciences,nd
Bagalkot was established on 22 November, 2008 for providing
horticultural education, new technologies / products and effective
extensionserviceswhichcatertotheneedsofallstakeholdersspecially
farmingcommunityinthestateandcountry.Thecampusiswelldeveloped
with modern infrastructure and attractive landscaping. The weather
condition during October to November will be very pleasant with0 o
minimum temperature of 17 C and maximum temperature of 30 C
providing better learning environment and comfortable stay for the
participants.BagalkotissurroundedbymanyhistoricalplacesofChalukya
dynasty.Therock-cutcavetemplescarvedinmonolithicsinglestoneof
Badami (royal capital of Chalukya's), Virupaksha temple of Pattadakal
built in the South Indian style (replica of the Kailasanatha temple of
Kanchi),Aiholealsocalledascradleofhinduarchitectureanddescribedas
thelaboratoryforarchitectureratheraUniversityofIndianarchitecture,th
Kudalsangamtheplacewhere thesocial reformistof12 centuryLord
“Basavanna”livedandAlamattidamalifelineofAgri-Hortidevelopment
arewithintheradiusof50km.TheworldfamousGolgumbazofVijaypura
andUNESCOWorldHeritageSitesofHampiofVijayanagaraEmpireand
TungabhadraDamarewithintheradiusof150km.
FACULTY
In addition to the faculty of the University, eminent resource
persons fromother institutions includingprivateorganisationswillbe
involved.
ELIGIBILITY
The training programme under CAFT is open to Teachers/
Researchers/ExtensionpersonnelofSAUs/ICARinstitutions,Deemed
UniversitiesandCentralUniversitiesrelatedtofarmsciencesworkingin
therankofAssistantProfessorandabovecadre.
DURATIONOFTHECOURSErd
The training programme under CAFT is for 21days from 03 rdOctoberto23 October,2019.Theparticipantsarerequestedtoarrive
ndlatestby02 October,2019eveningandmayplantheirreturnjourneyrd
inadvanceimmediatelyafter5.00PMon23 October,2019.
TRAVELANDACCOMMODATION
Participants will be paid “to and fro” travel charges for their
journeybytheshortestroutebyrail/busaftertheproductionoforiginal
tickets (only public transport) as per ICAR norms and restricted to
maximumofIItierACfare.Participantsshouldgivepriorintimationof
travel plan for local pickup from Bagalkot bus/ railway station. Free
lodging and boarding will be provided for 25 participants in the
UniversityguesthouseandwillbeservedwiththelocaldishesofNorth
Karnataka. The local participants will be provided with lunch and
inter-sessionrefreshmentsonly.Allparticipantsarerequestedtoabide
bytherulesandregulationsofUHS,Bagalkot.
