PRE-SEA CONTRIBUTIONVISIT TO THE DOCKS

It was a bright, early Wednesday morning, on 11th October 2019when we mustered in front of the George Campbell library inwhite uniform and safety helmets, excited about our visit to thedocks. I personally didn't sleep very well the previous night withthe excitement gushing inside me. During the muster, Capt P.Joag enlightened us about the do's and don'ts at the port and weassured him of good discipline and behaviour. We boarded thecampus bus and after an hour and a half journey, we finally arrivedat the Yellow Gate of the Indira Docks. After a strict security check,we were permitted to enter the premises. With Capt. Joag's continuous explanation of things which wehave only learnt in theory, I was assured to leave the port with allmy doubts and queries answered. We saw ships, tugs, submarines and warships. It was an amazing experience towatch this huge and beautiful bulk carrier Chipolbrokmoon- IMO9272 216 built in Hong Kong, loading cargo with huge cranes.Fortunately we got a chance to interact with the Chief Officer. We saw a huge black submarine passing through the shiningwater which was a fortunate sight for us. All these things madea great impression on us as facts were noted down in our pocketdiary. As I made note, I wondered how these ships likeChipolbrokmoon berth so perfectly in such a confined spacealong the jetty. Then Capt. Joag explained how tugs assist aship in its berthing procedure. These powerful little boats canpull and push vessels without damaging or denting their hull.Tugs, Gulmohar Star-IMO 9819 961 and Lakshmi IMO- 9154 945assisted these in bound and out bound vessels. Then we moved to the store house where goods were carefullyshifted with the help of forklifts before they were loaded on board. After that we visited the dry dock and learnt about its purpose. Itis here that huge ships are repaired from the keel to the hull. Wecould clearly see the loadline on the side of a ship brought in forrepair. I was astonished to learn how a single gate can hold outso much water in order to carry out repair work.As we went further we saw a passenger ship M. V. Angriya- IMO9150353 that operates from Mumbai to Goa and has a capacityof over 2000 passengers. It was truly a luxury liner and a fun factwas that she was built at Mazagon docks. Despite its classylook and design, I found the neighbouring warships as fascinatingas the cruise liner. These mighty chariots of the Almighty fightthe fierce waves as powerfully as any other vessel and are thepride of our nation. Some of these warships were right in front ofus- INS Kochi, INS-Trikand and INS- Viraat R 22 were loadedwith missiles and machine guns. Their powerful RADAR coulddetect vessels up to 500 nautical miles away.It was time to depart from the docks. We returned to the securityarea and after a thorough check we boarded the bus and left theIndira Docks. This experience had a great impact on me. Realizingmy responsibility on these huge machines made me kind ofnervous by just how challenging a sailor's job is! And I acceptthe challenge because not everyone can become a sailor. I amtruly grateful to the institute for this wonderful experience.

THE NEW LIFE

Stepping up from school to college,In order to gain some Marine knowledge.Learning new vocabulary and many differenttermsLike whipping blocks and ship's stern.

This change was evident and big,Because, before this I was just kid.Left my home with mom's hugs and tears,Getting ready for what lies ahead, with nofear.

From morning, 6 to evening, 5Feeling like a bee returning to his hive. After all the hard work and collecting nectar,We got involved into ship's construction andvector.

Tying different knot even in our dreamsPhone filled up with notes instead of memesMaking new friends from different statesEquality among all irrespective of religion orrace

The pride of uniformWith the peak cap on my headIs what encourages me a lotTo jump out of bed.
