4 pipe system operation HEATING COOLING
• A Multitube unit is the one that can simultaneously satisfy demands for hot and coldutilities typical of hydronic systems. The aim is to meet the requirement of variable thermal loads of the building, during the span of t he entire exercise daily, weekly and yearly, but especially regardless of the season tha t it is summer, winter or the typical mid-season.
• Moreover, the multitube is equipped with self-adaptive capacity , the ability to independently determine the most suitable cycle acc ording to the demand of the system and therefore the variability of thermal loa ds during operation of the plant.

Energy efficiency
In order to evaluate the efficiency of vapor compre ssion machines on seasonal operation some index were defined:
•ESEER – European Seasonal Efficiency Ratio defined by Euro vent Certification Company The ESEER is calculated by combining full and part load operating EER, for different summer seasonal air or water temperatures, and including f or appropriate weighting factors.
•SCOP & SEER – Seasonal COP & Seasonal EER defined by EN14825 int roducing the parameter forming the basis for European minimum re quirements and energy labelling for heat pumps. This calculation method consists in div iding the heating season into a number of hours with different temperatures, which together a re to reflect the variations in temperature over a season.
Both methods are inadequate to properly evaluatethe performance of a multifunction machine!!

Total Efficiency Coefficient
The effective coefficient measuring the unit perfor mance during the whole year is the TEC(Total Efficiency Coefficient) The TEC indicator is an average year efficiency index considering the efficiency of each operating mode o f the unit properly weighted (cooling, cooling + heating, heating). Usually the multifunctional units have TEC value around 5. This means that per each kW of power input there is a useful capacity of 5 kW.

DMEC = Dual Mode Efficiency Coefficient = Efficienc y in chiller + recovery mode
The DMEC index is the ratio between the sum of the heating a nd cooling capacity and the compressors electrical power input, in chiller + re covery mode, and reaches the maximum value when the heating and cooling loads are fully balanced. This index was defined to objectively measure the e fficiency of a multi-functional unit according to simultaneous load requirement.
