Teach your children well

From the principal Hi everyone – Trangie Central School – More beautiful every day! Back to School in Week 5 It’s good news all round that the students return full time next week. We still continue with the enhanced cleaning measures and these will continue for the foreseeable future. Good hygiene, of course, makes sense at any time and it is a salutary lesson to us all as to what happens when hygiene practices are not really up to scratch.

We have sent information to every family about safety measures, reporting and what activities cannot occur until, probably the beginning of Term 3 but still to be confirmed. This information is on Facebook as well. Please call though, if you have a question that is not answered by this communication.

The most important thing to note for next week is that all students MUST be at school unless their doctor writes a letter notifying of an on-going and serious health condition. Some students have not attended, nor have they engaged in their learning at home and this cannot continue into next week. The last few weeks have been very disruptive, despite the best efforts of teachers to provide work and students to engage online. The sooner we are all back in the classroom, the sooner we can start to catch up on lost time.

Ever Improving Over the last few weeks we have been frantically busy with improvements happening all around us. We have the on-going air-conditioning work as I mentioned last week and this continues. This week we also received delivery of a set of lockers so that students will be able to store their work boots, books etc so that they will not need to carry great piles of gear around all day. This was requested by P&C and we have been very happy to see them finally arrive.

Our lovely new water tank is installed and we are now planning a garden around it with four inspirational totem poles with flood lighting at the base, around the front of the tank. Donna Terry is planning this garden and if all the other gardens she has done are anything to go by, it should look fantastic. We received the palette of goods today and we think it may be the totems – a surprise in store and very exciting. Our COLA of course is up and functional and we are absolutely thrilled with it. Who would ever have thought how enormous it has turned out to be! It is an amazing space for the students to play in, and it is incredible how the sound is muted by the insulation, creating a really calm place. We have had painters in all week, painting inside and out and now that the canteen has been completed we would like to thank Mark Gleeson who came in to work with Jack Randell to re-instate the bird murals onto the canteen wall. Now the building is finished, the murals look better than ever. Jack and Mark also installed our Values murals onto the side of the primary building, as shown on the front page. They look wonderful so don’t miss the chance to come and have a look and see if you can recognise any familiar faces.

Also, the ‘hill’ in primary is now open for play, after the slopes were re-surfaced with hard-wearing artificial grass. It should now withstand harsh summers without frying the grass off. The students were having a lovely time today and obviously glad to have it back after it has been closed off for a few weeks to allow the turf to take around the edges. We have also planted some trees around the edge that will provide shade in summer.

From the principal Congratulations Stacey Whitney It seems that each week we find ourselves congratulating one of our students for their success on the big stage. This week we have been notified that Stacey Whitney has been successful in her application for the 2020 Bunga Barraugu Winter program at the University of Sydney.

This year’s program will be held on-line from Monday 13 – Friday 17 July.

Before the program Stacey will receive her personalised timetable, including:

• Subject-specific workshops with HSC-markers

• Tutoring with university students on subjects you’d like extra help with

• Exam preparation, goal setting and study skills workshops

• Support to ace university pathway and scholarship applications

Time to meet and speak with staff and students about degrees, university life, support services and anything else you what to know about!

Stacey has been allocated a University Student Leader who will contact her the week beforehand to make sure she has everything she needs for a great week! We are very proud of her and know she will have a great week.

Thumbs up and huge THANKS to all the staff at TCS. Through this whole saga of never-ending changes and shifting messages, our staff have stayed true to our purpose of looking after our students and our community. The students’ interests have always been first and foremost, with no-one wavering. We are truly fortunate that the transition back to school for us has been seamless, with a large proportion of students already choosing to be at school every day regardless of the ‘Phase’. Their dedication and commitment is truly admirable.

Finally …….. My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. I do teach, so if you need to talk to me for any reason, just call the office and arrange a time that I am not on class or in a meeting. Also, don’t forget our suggestion box at each side of the school.

Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us. Facebook is definitely for cowards – so please tell us to our face!

Also, give your child the most valuable gift in the world – a good education – so send them EVERY day. We have a great school and it is such good value for very little money.

Head Teacher’s Report It has been another successful week of teaching and learning, with students continuing to return to school and engage with their learning through all pathways available to them during our phased return to face-to-face teaching.

Silver linings While the disruptions and difficulties posed by the pandemic are easily visible, the positives to come out of this event are perhaps less so. However, they are there! Our students and staff alike are demonstrating wonderful resilience and persistence in the face of changing expectations and learning environments. We are all having to be flexible as ongoing works around the school to improve our environment in summer disrupt learning spaces in the short-term. I personally gained an additional 1,500 steps as we moved our English class outside today into the fresh air and dappled sunshine, so I’m not complaining!

These personal attributes are among some of the most essential for personal and professional success, and so it can be helpful to try and see the positives wherever we can!

Deputy Principal Report It is very exciting news that schools are moving back towards normal operations. Our teachers are keen to engage all our students back into a school routine; however, our attendance over the last four weeks has been reasonably solid, allowing most students to make a head start in their learning. For the students who have been engaging in Remote Learning, they need to make sure that their work packs are returned to school for marking, as these will help teachers with determining assessment results.

Our strict hygiene measures will still be in place. This is to ensure that our environment is as clean and hygienic as possible. We are also working on our reporting process for Semester 1. We are currently planning our timelines and report options in light of the changes recommended from the Department of Education for this semester. We are aiming at getting the K-10 reports out in week two next term, giving as much time for teaching and assessment to take place. Year 12 reports will go home this week and Year 11 reports are scheduled to go home in week 10 this term.

Assistant Principal’s Report

Is your child ready and prepared to learn? As we return to full time, on site schooling we ask that all families ensure that their child is ready to learn. There are a number of key indicators for a child’s overall academic success and many of these factors occur at home.

• A nutritious breakfast fuels kids and gets them ready for the day. In general, kids who eat breakfast have more energy and do better in school. Children who eat breakfast are also less likely to be absent and/or sick.

• You can help boost your child's attention span, concentration, and memory by providing breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fibre and protein, as well as low in added sugar. Don’t forget to send along fresh fruits and vegies for our ‘Crunch and Sip’ break at 10am.

• Nutritious recess and lunch can keep your child’s mind fueled for learning throughout the day.

• Children also need the right amount of sleep to be alert and ready to learn all day. Most school-age kids need 10 to 12 hours of sleep a night. Bedtime difficulties can arise at this age for a variety of reasons. Homework, sports, after-school activities, TVs, computers, and video games, as well as hectic family schedules, can contribute to kids not getting enough sleep.

• Lack of sleep can cause irritable or hyperactive behavior and might make it hard for kids to pay attention in class. It's important to have a consistent bedtime routine, especially on school nights. Be sure to leave enough time before bed to allow your child to unwind before lights out and limit stimulating diversions like TV, video games, and Internet access.

Excursions The dates for the Year 5/6 Canberra excursion have been successfully postponed until Term 4. Keep sending in your payments and if we are unable to go the funds will be refunded to you. Fingers crossed it will be able to run as the children are really excited and they will get to visit some terrific, educational sites. Reminders …..

Please be sure to notify the school if your children are away.

Uniform, lunch boxes, drink bottles and hats MUST be labelled. Teachers are not responsible for searching for your child’s lost items and it is almost impossible to return items that are not labelled clearly with your child’s name. Teach your child to care for their belongings.
