Proclaiming Christ in The New Year

As we begin a new year of life we are faced with some of the same age-old ques-tions: “What in the world is going on?”

We face so many very real reasons for serious concern. Can we save the world from global warming? Can we ever mend relations with the Muslim world? Can we bring an end to terror-ism? Can we bring an end to mass shootings in our country? Will our country find ways to talk and agree or will we continue to divide and polarize?

The psalmist once said, “I lift my eyes to the hills, from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” The psalmist was looking up at all the temples of the local gods where people went to pray for all their particular problems. The psalmist knew that there was only one God, only one hope.

We live in a broken world that needs salvation. We live in a broken world that is increasingly growing less reliant on God. In the midst of this ongoing reality of strife we have this amazing word of hope to offer. Jesus said when you hear of wars and ru-mor of wars and hear of famines and earthquakes, then stand up, raise your head and know your salvation is near.

No matter how dark things ever may get for us we will contin-ue to stand up, raise our heads, and proclaim Jesus Christ. He has come, he is here, is will come again. As we hold to that great promise it holds us up in comfort joy and peace. Let us continue to proclaim Jesus Christ in the New Year.

Thank you TLC for all the cards, well wishes and those wonderful prayers that have made my recovery from a bicycle accident go as smoothly as anyone could hope for. Thank you especially for the time taken to visit me at home bearing flowers and all the phone calls. It all meant so much and is so appreciated while getting over the rough stuff. You are truly God’s caring people. Diane Mielke

As disciples of Jesus

we gather in grace,

grow in faith,

and go forth to serve.

As I write this in the busy season of Advent (trying to remember to slow down, seek peace, and wait for the Lord), I shift my thinking to the season ahead. Epiphany’s Light and Hope helps me say to you that now (January) is the perfect time to get involved in one of our TLC music groups! I invite you to give yourself the Gift of Music in your life as a New Year’s Resolu-tion. We especially need singers in the Chancel Choir from now through Easter, since we have several singers who head south for the winter. But all of the following groups welcome new singers or ring-ers:

Starting Wednesday, January 6

5:00 – Bronze Bells, for grades 5-10.

5:30 – Children’s Choir and Chimers, for grades K-6.

5:30 – Youth Singers and Instrumentalists to lead Oasis Worship.

7:00 – Chancel Choir, for Senior High and adults.

8:30 – Praise and Worship Team, for Senior High and adults.

Contact me for more information, [email protected].

Here are some other activities coming up that you may want to be aware of: Chancel Choir to get “Tuned Up” with Concordia College’s Rene Clausen, January 23 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church.

Rob Reid Sings with the National Lutheran Choir, Saturday, February 27, 7:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran in Apple Valley, and Sunday, February 28, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran in Plymouth. Contact organist Karen Daniels for reduced-price tickets to these concerts.

TLC Handbells Ring at “Bellfest,”Saturday, February 27 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie. This 20th annual event is directed by William Mathis of Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church.

Wishing you the joy of music in the New Year at TLC!

This is the last time I will write as a TLC staff member. The past 7 years have been a great blessing to me in so many ways, more ways than I can easily express.

I thank all of you for allowing me to be with you in your homes, to share communion, to share stories, to share prayers, to sit with loved ones as they have been hospitalized, have grieved, have died. I hold all of you in prayers of thanksgiving.

Transfiguration has long been my faith family and will continue for years to come. It is with a certain amount of sadness that I leave this position, but I know it is right for me at this time.

Thank You!

Contribute on Your Phone

You can now use your smart phone to give to TLC. Send text to: 952-777-8909.

Include a dollar sign in front of an amount and your gift will be made to TLC. Example: $25

The first time you do this you will have to register but after that any time you want to give it's as simple as sending a dollar sign and an amount.

If you want to designate a gift you can do that too. After the amount add a space and the following initials for the appropriate fund: BF = Building Fund, GM= Gifts and Me-morials, FF= Foundation Fund, SO= Special Offering (Currently Syrian Refugees). Example: $25 SO

I don’t like to be cold—ever. So what can I do to keep warm? Good conversation with others, especially around scripture is a great way for me. And, according to Luke 24:32, I’m not the only one! After Jesus’ resurrection he appears on the road to two followers whose hearts “burn within them” as Jesus explains the Scripture to them. I invite you to find ways to encounter the scripture with someone else.

Certainly in worship, but perhaps in a study/conversation group, or with a partner or friend using a devotional booklet (3-month one avail-able at church), an online daily at http://www.luthersem.edu/godpause/default.aspx; or pick up the weekly version of Taking Faith Home from the education kiosk in the Narthex. in the Truth

Ministry Needs Continued Prayer for the ELC

The Early Learning Center will be beginning 2016 with our 3rd annual State of the Center meetings on the evenings of Jan-uary 11th , 12th, and 14th in the Sanctuary from 5:00 – 6:00.

We started this new tradition in 2013 to share with families and interested church members our accomplishments of the past year, our current financial picture and our goals going forward. All church members are welcome to attend any of these three evenings.

Through another successful season of fundraising we now feel we have enough to buy a “new” used bus. We have found a possible bus, out of state, and hopefully will have it in January. We want to thank the many different Transfiguration members who have helped us.

I have no greater joy than to hear that my

children are walking in the Truth.

Young people today need more than infor-mation. They need mystery, meaning, belonging, and identity.

During the season of Lent (February 10-March 16), each TLC Confirmation Student will meet with an adult faith mentor every Wednesday night from 6:15-8:00 p.m., attending Oasis wor-ship together at 6:15 and then having a guided conversation in the Fellowship Hall or youth Room after worship. All conversation materials will be supplied in advance.

Interested in becoming a mentor? Sign ups are available in the Narthex and on Wednesday nights! Or email [email protected]

First-time mentors must attend an orientation meet-ing on Wednesday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall.
