FILM OPENING ANALYSIS – TRANSFORMERS 4 AGE OF EXTINCTION

FIRST SCENE Sound: Both diegetic and non diegetic sound can be heard. Because we can faintly hear the burning and roar of the after burners on the space ships as they travel forward, and we can also hear background music that is played in a minor tone and at a slow tempo to signify something bad is going to happen, or that someone or something is in grave danger.

Lighting : Since it is in space all the area around is black, this signifies this film is a sci fi genre film. There is a smudge of light that seems to be the sun in the scene. All the spaceships are travelling towards it, indicating either a positive outcome or a negative one. Positive as in they are going to the light, or negative as in they are going to do (into the light).

Editing : The editing is slow paced, indicating no action, there are no cuts, the camera stays in one place through out, as the spaceships pass it by.

Note : In this scene everything is exactly the same, but now we see the titles, and all the spaceships are in front of the camera. This shows progression of the spaceships.

THIRD SCENE Sound : In this scene we can hear only diegetic sound, we can hear the waterfall, which the camera is right under. And the same roar of the afterburners on the spaceship that seems to be hovering over the planet.

Editing is again slow, but faster than scenes one and two. There is no fancy cut sequence just the camera panning across.

Lighting: Is bright, it is provided naturally. there is no black area’s. this signifies that all is good and nothing sinister is at work. Except for the spaceships and the sound and lighting in scenes one and two.

FOURTH SCENESound : In this scene we can hear only diegetic sound, we can hear the waterfall, which the camera is right under. And the same roar of the afterburners on the spaceship that seems to be hovering over the planet. Also we hear baby dinosaurs fighting over food and scuffling around.

Editing is again slow, but faster than scenes one and two. There is no fancy cut sequence just the camera panning across. The camera then pans down and focuses on some baby dinosaurs fighting over food.

SCENE FIVEEditing : It cuts to a scene where there is an alien hand with six claw like fingers, and a whole in its hand. The alien hand moves around fast, this is a opposition to the rest of the scenes signifying it is different than the other natural beings and things in the other scenes.

Lighting : There is a blue aura coming from the device being operated by the alien hand. But the rest is dark, this signifies there is something sinister, coupled with the alien hand gives it a sci fi feel to it. So far it has met the conventions of a sci fi film.

Sound : There is both diegetic and non diegetic sound present. There is deep and slow background music which is being played in a minor tone, this signifies there is something sinister or evil at work. The diegetic sound is the crackles of the bones of the alien hand and the sounds the blue object/device is making.
