Transforming Lives
2018-2019 Annual Report
Familylinks’ Downtown Outreach Center and Shelter (DOCS) has offered a sanctuary for homeless youth since 1984. DOCS is the only emergency shelter available for those in the 18-24 age group. This past year, DOCS served 91 youth, including Tyler. In January, Tyler found himself homeless and was referred to DOCS. Like all youth who enter the program, Tyler received supportive care for his personal, medical, educational, and employment needs, along with development of life and job skills. The goal at DOCS is to help youth live independently and successfully transition into adulthood.Within this supportive environment, Familylinks provided a launching pad for him to achieve his goals of gaining employment and completing his schooling, both of which Tyler did in a relatively short period of time. Upon graduation, Tyler secured a second job and continued to save money which enabled him to move into his own apartment in October. This is just one example of the transformational work being done every day at DOCS.
Dear Friends of Familylinks,When you offer 26 different programs to serve the community, it’s not easy to summarize what Familylinks does in a single sentence. But perhaps we can come close by saying, “When people turn to Familylinks in their time of need, we are here for them.”
That phrase is especially true when we are helping families deal with several challenges in their lives. They may have a family member struggling with the devastation of an ongoing addiction, or a child with behavioral health issues, or a senior in the family trying to maintain their independence – or all of the above. Family dynamics are complex, and there is rarely just one issue that is causing difficulty.
Fortunately, this is where Familylinks excels in our comprehensive range and quality of family-centered services. For more than 50 years, Familylinks has offered services in the areas of Behavioral Health, Youth & Family Services, Service Coordination and Senior Services.
In this report, you will read about two of our success stories from this year:
One is about Tyler, a twenty year old who found himself unexpectedly homeless. Thankfully he discovered Familylinks’ Downtown Outreach Center and Shelter when he needed it the most.
Another is about Gene, a mother who was battling addiction while trying to keep her family together. Gene and her son moved into Familylinks’ Family Treatment Center where she was able to get the help and support that they both needed.
We are proud of the professionalism and compassion displayed by our staff throughout Familylinks. This is a core strength of our agency that allows us to “be here” when individuals and families seek our assistance.
This year and every year, we are thankful for our generous donors and volunteers, without whom our success would not be possible.

In the early 1970’s, a small group of volunteers wanted to "do good for the neighborhood". They determined that the community needed services for seniors, and the idea for Vintage was born. The organization was officially founded in May of 1973 and has been a fixture in East Liberty since. In 2015 Vintage became affiliated with Familylinks and continued their reputation for excellence under this new parent-subsidiary structure.
Today, Vintage is a nationally accredited senior center welcoming more than 1,000 participants annually. The Center offers a wide array of high quality activities with a focus on pro-active health and wellness, such as yoga and tai chi, dance and art classes, travel to museums and live performances, computer classes, health screenings, informational speakers and daily meals. Vintage is a licensed provider of the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, an evidence-based program for adults to learn management strategies for conditions such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, cancer and other ongoing health issues.
Familylinks’ Family Treatment Center (FTC) provides residential services for substance-dependent women age 18 and older. Women can stay for up to six months, with up to two children age 12 or younger, while they receive ongoing treatment. With a capacity of 24, this facility provides a safe, secure and supportive environment for women in the initial months of their recovery effort. There are three goals at FTC – for clients to accept the need for treatment in order to stop the addictive disease process; for clients to establish a foundation for recovery in order to live a drug-free lifestyle and begin to address the impact that their addiction is having on their family; and for clients to demonstrate increased self-awareness, personal accountability and leadership.Gene spent 5 months and 2 days at FTC. During that time, she had her ups and downs, but the staff was always there to help and support her and her child. Without the constant care of Familylinks staff, Gene knows she would not have made it through the program. Among other things, a therapist worked with Gene to help her find new ways of communicating with her son. As a result, their relationship is growing stronger all the time. Upon leaving FTC, Gene felt healthy, focused and ready for the next phase of her life.
